A Day at the Academy

  • Participants in a media training day Tuesday at the Chicago Police Academy learned that it takes a lot of training and hard work for police recruits to become Chicago police officers.

Every weekday, as the sun and the flag rise at the Chicago Police Academy training headquarters, about 90 recruits hear a name of a fallen officer - a reminder of what is at stake. Most of the men and women will pass their 1,000 hours of training but it's not easy.

"It's a rigorous training we go through, everything from physical fitness to education, training us to what life's like when we hit the streets," said Fred Coletta, Chicago Police Department recruit.

Coletta left looming layoffs in corporate America to become an officer. And what he will learn in 30 weeks, participants in a media training day Tuesday tried to absorb in six hours.

While this may have noble intentions, we've always thought of it as a "gimmick." It's a fluff piece. The fact is police work isn't, and shouldn't be, explainable in 6 hours. Stuff like this convinces many people that police work isn't difficult and enables hundreds of Monday morning quarterbacks to second guess what we do with the tiniest frame of reference.

And it's more than a little disturbing to see reporters get blasted by AirSoft wielding bad guys and them laughing it off, completely forgetting that these "real-life scenarios" are reenactments of coppers getting killed in the line of duty.

OT....One would think some "investigative reporter" would do some research on this scam on the pension. Come on guys do a little foot work you may discover some good stuff.

Our Police Pension Fund is rated at 35% solvency. About 7-8 years ago it was rated at 80%. A pension fund is considered 'healthy' when it is rated at 80% or higher. Our pension fund is in 'critical' condition. We will not have a pension fund by 2013. It will be insolvent. It will be gone. Our pension fund wasnt helped by Mark Donohue giving Mayor Daley's nephew,Robert Vanecko $27 million dollars for his real estate deals. Here is a tidbit of info for the rank & file: Robert Vanecko and Patrick Daley were involved in real estate deals with a Russian Mafia associate named Boris Stratviesky. Boris was a money launderer. Boris and his father, Lev Stratviesky got a $20 million dollar loan from the Broadway Bank many years ago. the loan officer who approved this loan was Alexis Giannoulias. This goof is running for the US Senate. Boris Stratviesky was convicted of money laundering and racketeering in Federal court about 2 years ago. Makes ya kinda wonder why Patrick Daley chose to live in Moscow after he got out of the US Army. All above info was obtained thru open source media.

Media days are the only times in Chicago they will portray the police in a positive light.

Otherwise the headlines on the nine o'clock will always start with "Police shoot and kill victim who allegedly pointed a gun at them, IPRA investigating.

I do recall when now defunct SOS shot some savage on the Westside who was shot in the upper back while shooting back at the chasing police. ABC actually took 5 seconds to correct the night prior's story and state that the ME's findings were that the shitheads injuries were consistent with a person who was shooting while running away.

Still don't trust'em. Except for Ginger Zee. She's one fine lady...
She can lie to me everyday.

Back when I was in the Academy, it meant something. Remember " Welcome to the Gym? " The 2 mile run, the 1000 jumping jacks and the 1000 pushups? The next day your shoulders looked like bowling bowls. All that training, law, scenario's,running, psych workshop. They beat you down and built you up. What is really karma is that the "job and politics " has beat us down again. All that training....all a waste now.

its a joke. If only these reporters could actually see what it is like on the streets and how these animals have zero regard or respect for police, community members or any member of society. Im sure all the media and civilians in this city think police work is just cut and dry.. when in reality its not black and white... right or wrong but just grey... one big grey area where tough decisions and thinking outside the box is the only thing to do.. on the streets there is no "protocol" or correct "procedure" to follow for a simple and correct solution..it doesnt exist. that is what people need to find out.. but of course, nobody wants to know that.

If you're a media hack, 'fess up, be proud, tell us what a hard job we have and start telling your editors that maybe they ought to stop listening to Daley and painting the police as greedy do-nothing out-of-control frat boys and girls.

I like the fact that they had a media day at TASER training. NOT ONE of the reporters volunteered to take the ride.

A least 5-6 people from most classes take it. I took it and was fine in less than a minute after the hit.

Media is all full of crap in this town...especially major Police Haters Roeper & Steinberg.

Heres something I know...The streets are overrun with savages. The citizens are in danger everday, and ever so grateful for the shorthanded Police that we do have. If ever see one of those savages overpower a lone Officer, you had better believe I am going to drop what I am doing and come to the assistance of that Officer.
A good headlock can buy an Officer the few seconds he needs to snap on the cuffs.

That stupid show Everybody Loves Raymond covered this on an episode, the older brother is a Sgt. and Ray who is a sports columnist for a newspaper made fun of him saying all he did was ride around, well on the ride along all they did was ride around and Ray kept on making fun, they stopped to eat and while they were in the restaurant an armed robber comes in and Ray shit his pants as his brother took the guy out and arrested him, and of course Ray tried to do the right thing for his brother whom he now sees as a hero but Rays editor only put in the article about Ray witnessing it and nothing about his brother, funny thing a comedy show hit real life like that

In the 5 short years I did what I did on the North Side,no academy class could have EVER taught.
Im a quick study and if I listed all those that taught me this would be a LONG LONG POST. suffice to say I agree, OTJ Training FAR SURPASSES academy orientation hands down.
As always a bow of RESPECT to those in A/3 that not only taught me but went thru those doors with me.The EDUCATION was priceless.I hope that I used what you taught me well, and that it made a little dent. And above all else........

THANK YOU!

The other night I observed one of those Citizen Academy groups touring the range. After being shown "our" new rifles, a woman in the group asked the officer conducting the tour how many police officers were now carrying rifles in their cars.

He answered by saying 600 officers were qualified. She replied something along the lines of, "I understand you require something called a power test for officer to have rifles. There are military veterans who served in the Gulf War who might not be in the best shape but are sharpshooters. Why disqualify them?"

After shitting himself he said it was because they wanted to make sure the officers couldn't be over powered and have the rifle taken. She laughed at him and said, "If the criminal was that close I doubt an officer would be using a rifle."

I gave her a thumbs up on her way out and she smiled and rolled her eyes.

Bunch of soft-handed, rosy cheeked, nancy drew & hardy boys reading newsies had a rugged SIX WHOLE HOURS at the academy?

Fuck That Silly-Assed Noise!

Make those Police-hating bitches do a 3rd or 1st watch ride-along in 006, 007, 011, 015 or 025...

We would love to see them puke on their shoes so hard that their $1k designer glasses fall into it when we find somebody that's been playing trunk music all winter. We would love to see them shit through their pants and turn whit with fear when gunfire erupts right in front of them.

Maybe a newsie will get torn to pieces or get used as a three-hole plaything by a coven of savages and live to tell the tale.

They think they can tell our story in six hours at the academy?

Step into our arena bitches! Feel and see the hatred, pain and destruction for a night... We feel & see it for 20 to 40 years.

Let us know when all the dead people you've ever seen start parading around in your head sometimes when you're trying to sleep.

Talk your shit about our compensation & "sweet pensions/early retirements" you bitches!

No Chicago newsie has had to bury a friend whose life was violently taken.

No local newsie has had to swallow the bloody tears of anger, disgust & outrage at being treated as a second class citizen.

Being a local newsie DOES NOT TAKE YEARS OFF YOUR LIFE!

Stress and aggravation are constant companions of the Street Officer but we're crucified for 5 minutes over on lunch, using harsh language to get the attention of the willfully inattentive and belting the shit out of someone who challenges our LAWFUL authority or killing the shit out of someone who poses a grave threat to our lives.

Funny, we were asked not long ago "Why are Coppers so darn pissed off lately?"

It'll take more than six hours to explain why.

This is what I do know...the CPD got three positive stories from the Media Day at the Academy. Yes, they will never know what it is truly like to make decisions that will impact lives forever. But, the training did provide them insight into what we do. It did provide them with a glipse of what we sacrifice to attempt to keep others safe. The media showed up on their time. At least some showed up. Hating is easy. Trying caring...that takes effort.

I think this is the first time I totally disagree with the post. Showing some of the real dangers of police work important for people to understand. By people understanding some of the real dangers can help use. One example is how everyone thinks its easy for all police to shoot like the movies. Its not that easy, and by making leaders and the media awhere of this will only help.

Pt.II

Pissed off at being shit-talked in addition to 42 extra-short INTENTIONALLY driving the Police Pension into insolvency by deliberate diversion of funds and allowing theft with impunity by his nephew and cronies on the board just to prove to coppers that he's the king of chicago and can do what ever he wants to.

Bet you a fat man that mayoral and aldermanic pensions are in GREAT FUCKIN' SHAPE while these thieving ass-crumbs keep making noise about the city's finances being fucked up because Coppers "want good pay, sweet pensions and early retirement."

Being the Police in this fucked-up city SHOULD BE PENSIONABLE at a minimum of 20 years and 75% regardless of age due to the VERY HIGH LIKELIHOOD of dying before age 70.

How many Coppers drag in to work sick, injured and half dead from being exposed to toxic shit and we still have to be aggravated with conspiratorial fuckery from shorty, weis-hole and damn fool peck-sniff, by the book "federal model of policing" dumb as a wet stump exempts along with civilian and media shit-talkers?

Part of us really hopes shorty and weis-hole DO NOT DODGE A BULLET LIKE LAST SUMMER! Part of us really wishes for a repeat of "crack war summers" of the late 80's through mid 90's.

All the silly-ass squad car cameras, flashing blue lights on a pole and stupid-assed directives from lemon-head, the bar tender and the frustrated maiden aunt won't mean a damn thing. They'll keep flaying a donkey skeleton laying in the road and have the nerve to get pissed because it won't get up.

Self preservation and mitigation of any and all financial, career and personal injury at the hands of shorty, dude inc., lemon-head and his coven of feeb he-witches and the scared out of their wits exempts is the key.

Everyone has an off day now and then and this post seems to demonstrate that.

Yes, it's a p.r. gimmick, if you wish to call it that, but public relations isn't always an evil word. Six hours in the academy isn't going to make you a cop but it can demonstrate to the public that there's more to the job that getting a badge, gun and patrol car.

Yes, the media can be a royal pain in the ass. It is inflitrated by nitwit reporters and their bosses who often have no clue what real news is and are unwilling to commit the resources necessary to dig deep to ferret out corruption. This hit-and-run "nitwitness news" has become all too common.

That's sad for another reason. In a more perfect world (as in the days when there were real "police reporters") much of our core job is not all that dissimilar. An investigator must be a good reporter. A reporter should be a good investigator.

When I put on that badge and took the oath, I remember something in it about the Constitution of the United States. Interestingly, the words "police department" aren't in it but the First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press, imperfect (and increasingly incompetent) as that press is.

Besides the obvious, why does it matter?

About 30 years ago I arranged for some students visiting from China to tour a TV station. When they got into the newsroom they were spellbound by the rack of police and fire scanners. After being told what they were, one of the students asked, "You mean the police LET you listen to what they are doing?"

That kid's question stuck with me ever since because it sure helped explain what that Constitution stuff was all about.

We very much need to build bridges with the media, not walls.

How about the fucking media "caring" about us before slamming our heads into a pole, and broadcasting our names and images across the headlines before all the facts are known. I'll agree, if you deserve it, you deserve it.

We show up on our own time for department related duties, when we should be with our families.

At least "some" showed up? That's refreshing. We show up every day.

I'll agree, "Hating is easy".

If and when the MSM in this city can prove to us that they are not shills for this whole administration...I'll stop "hating".
