Here's a question for you legal eagles.
1. I was attending some dept. training and the instructor said we are not required to order an offender to drop a weapon if its unsafe. We can just shoot. Is this true?
2. Am I obligated to answer the census?

Officer Danny Castillo was involved in a road rage incident in Indiana, in which a resident of that state damaged Danny's auto. Danny called the State Police and reported the incident at the time it occurred. State Troopers who completed the report at the time informed Danny's supervisors in 003 by telephone that Danny was fine, and had done nothing wrong. A few months later, Danny was informed by the Indiana State Police (and our own IAD)that he had warrants for his arrest for four felony charges. Danny turned himself in to the ISP, made bail, and faced trial. Some of his former co-workers testified in court for his defense. After several continuances, the presiding judge acquitted Danny of all charges, and chastised the prosecutors and the ISP detective who pushed this case, stating that there was no basis for this ever to have resulted in charges against Danny. Thanks to some dedicated friends and a great legal team, this incident resulted in a just verdict. Unfortunately, Danny has a rather large legal bill now, thanks to Indiana. Friends of Danny are throwing him a fund raiser on 19 March (next Friday)
at the FOP Hall. Tickets are $30.00
Tickets can be purchased at the door, or from friends of Danny at the Police Academy or at the 003rd District, where Danny was assigned.

On 24 October 2008, a complaint was registered with the Independent Police Review Authority, regarding an incident occurring in the 1st District on 15 October 2008, involving the Superintendent of Police, while on duty. It was alleged that the Superintendent participated in a partisan political campaign/activity by way of comments made to a television reporter, brought discredit/disrepute to the Department because of said comments, and was inattentive to his duty. Based on the recording of the interview, and witness/accused interviews, IPRA recommended that the allegation that the Superintendent participated in partisan political campaign/activity be “UNFOUNDED”, in that his comments did not speak to his role or participation in the campaign. Further, IPRA recommended to “SUSTAIN” the allegations that the Superintendent impeded the Police Department’s operations and was inattentive to his duty in that while in uniform and on television he made comments that favored a particular political candidate. IPRA recommended that the Superintendent receive a reprimand.
Make a statement. Unless you're a incorrigible suckhole, boycott this weasel's "meetings".

Chicago police to expand use of Tasers

The Chicago Police Department will be expanding its use of Tasers by adding one to every beat car in the city and allowing patrol officers to use them for the first time, officials said today.
There are currently 280 on the street and about 380 will be added.
Sergeants and field training officers are the only personnel who carry the weapons now. Officials argue that beat officers, the first responders to fights and other dangerous confrontations, need the weapons.
Officers are getting eight hours of training and the department is designing follow-up courses.
Officers are allowed to use the weapons only when confronted with an active resister - making a movement to avoid arrest - or an assailant.
(The move comes as Illinois State Police investigate the death of a man in Midlothian overnight who died after being hit by a Taser following a traffic stop.)

If anyone ever added up the time on camera missions, burglary missions, non-violent reduction (WTF???) missions, auto theft missions, narcotics missions, check the well-being of the daughter who won't return momma's calls and momma lives in Kansas jobs, CAPS missions, answering 311 service calls, DAILY outdoor 'roll calls', 'see the W/C' calls, lunch, personals, real 911 response calls, CTA checks.... you would see they add up to more than nine hours a day. Sometimes I can't believe (wink, wink) how much my watch can somehow ACCOMPLISH in a single tour of duty.
Now let's add four hours a day of foot patrol to that.
Morons who've never DONE police work are telling us how it's done.

I don't know him but I am a law student. One of my instructors used this case as an example, so I looked him up. Why is he still in callback if he was wrongfully charged and acquitted. I cannot imagine how much he and his family has lost because of this. I will be donating more than the ticket and I hope those that can will do the same. Ijust could not imagine!

LOTS of people have been asking the same damn question. It appears that IAD has been dragging their feet in moving Danny out of callback and back into patrol. Initially, he was told that they would "need a copy of the transcript of the trial." Surely they must have it by now...so what's with the holdup? Maybe someone could stop IAD Chief Juan Rivera whenever he decides to surface and make inquiries. Calls have been made to IAD regarding Danny's status, and a number of bureaucratic excuses have been claimed, but it's obvious they are taking their sweet time in freeing Danny from callback. In the meantime, please get the word out to everyone to support Danny Castillo on 19 March at FOP Hall.
He's a decent guy and a great cop.

Ruth probably discovered that she will make a whole bunch more money as a Capt. (whether it's in Inspections or returning to 005, or wherever she lands) than she would as a Cmdr who has to forfeit a month of salary to help Shortshanks make ends meet. Why, although he was found innocent, is he still at callback, you ask?
I'll tell you why.
He's got no clout.
The department is deciding whether to keep him or not. They're still researching whether he violated any rules or regulations. They're going over his case with a fine-tooth comb, to determine if it's financially in their best interest to keep him or launch him. How much time does he have on? It might be cheaper, at least in their eyes to fire him and hope that he doesn't bother to get a lawyer & sue to get his job back.
Something similar happened to a copper from 010, John Krupa. While no criminal charges were filed, he was still launched out of vindictiveness.

Why not take it upon yourself and find the General Order, Special Order, Administrative Order, Legal Precidence, or Constitutional Requirement that requires us to do so. I'll bet fifty bucks you don't find anything REQUIRING us to order them to drop it. Will it help in the civil suit if witnesess can say they heard the officer yelling "drop the gun,knife,bat,whatever" yes. Does it really matter when it's your life or theirs, no. The offender has made the choice to "use force likely to result in great bodily harm or death." My father told me an old saying when I was hired on this job. It has been repeated hundres of times in other posts. "It's better to be judged by twelve then carried by six." Truly words to LIVE by as a police officer. Let's remember that a lot of the command staff who are really Lts and Capts may give up their positions for retirement. From their former rank, because of the new contracts, they are elgible for full medical at age 55 with 20 yrs service and many of these guys will be getting the gold baid pension.

While I too tend to agree with 99% of NorthSide's contributions, I find it suspect on how he takes the side of a supervisor fuck-up when the "boss" is female.
- Lt. "Sprinkler" was defended, along with making a call to her for her side of the story is one example in particular. I recall a second instance where he went to bat for a broad, however the exact nature of and person involved in that scenario escapes me at this time.

Why, although he was found innocent, is he still at callback, you ask?

He's got no clout.
The department is deciding whether to keep him or not. They're still researching whether he violated any rules or regulations. They're going over his case with a fine-tooth comb, to determine if it's financially in their best interest to keep him or launch him. How much time does he have on? It might be cheaper, at least in their eyes to fire him and hope that he doesn't bother to get a lawyer & sue to get his job back.
Something similar happened to a copper from 010, John Krupa. While no criminal charges were filed, he was still launched out of vindictiveness.

So take the demotion do a month or 2 as a Capt you get your gold braid pension and free medical coverage just another work the system scam.

Ruth lives and dies for CPD and for that Gold star. This has got to be a living hell for her now! I just want to know why the 3rd in Command Beatrice Cuello and Brust, Jfed's federal boy, did not get time or removed for their involvement. They took tickets from their subordinate! How many more passes does Assistant Supt. Cuello get?
LOTS of people have been asking the same damn question. It appears that IAD has been dragging their feet in moving Danny out of callback and back into patrol. Initially, he was told that they would "need a copy of the transcript of the trial." Surely they must have it by now...so what's with the holdup? Maybe someone could stop IAD Chief Juan Rivera whenever he decides to surface and make inquiries. Calls have been made to IAD regarding Danny's status, and a number of bureaucratic excuses have been claimed, but it's obvious they are taking their sweet time in freeing Danny from callback. In the meantime, please get the word out to everyone to support Danny Castillo on 19 March at FOP Hall.
He's a decent guy and a great cop.

Hey tool, before you toss the insult, you should do a fact check. It wasn't the concert. It was her subsequent actions during the investigation. She lied to IAD, it was proven and the recommendation was for her to be discharged. In all fairness, RW should be fired ASAP.

Remember you are not required to comply with the order if it puts you in danger, protection of your life always comes first. Warn the offender? jeez, like the sight of a police officer holding a weapon isn't warning enough. And there is no requirement not to shoot someone facing you or with their back to you, that is TV bullshit. Front, back, head, up the ass, just shoot so they cannot shoot you.
Don't get killed trying to comply with silly orders, comply in your reports after, do what you need to do to stay alive, always.
Ruth Wedster would make a hell of lot more money as a Commander. The pension of a Commander is far better than a pension of a Captain so take that lie esle where. She was DUMPED back to Captain and she lived for the Gold star. Now, to not bring the other bosses down I am sure her SON will be taken care of, not her. She is an Exempt with a Sustained CR#. When you say no one can have a sustained number and be submitted meritroriously, how can you justify her ever being promoted again?

Regarding RW, she did in fact voluntarily return to the rank of Captain and choose to go to 003.
Yes, according to the CR she screwed up but haven't we all made some bad decisions. We took our lumps, learned from those mistakes and moved on.
I believe that is what she is doing...don't judge unless you are "perfect".

I know better, so as not to tell you exactly who I am because I just have no desire to have a 7 foot tall amazon mad at me, that is a lie. She GOT DUMPED! I know that for a fact and she will be taking quite a few days for her fucked up antics. This is the third time we have had to ensure we took all needed measures on this same bullshit, so I know!
No Exempt has ever taken time and stayed an Exempt. She had no choice!
