Unsafe Cabs

  • The City of Chicago has pulled dozens of cabs off the streets in a crackdown on cab companies using salvaged cars.

The city's Department of Consumer Protection says the taxis are salvaged vehicles, which means many of them have been in collisions that have caused major damage. It is unclear how long many of the vehicles have been on the streets but city officials believe they posed a major threat to safety.

Thousands of cabs roam the streets of Chicago carrying passengers to their destinations. The city has inspected and licensed the vehicles before they hit the streets. But the consumer protection department has apparently determined that some are not as they appear. In fact, in a number of cases insurance companies have already determined the vehicles to be a total loss.

  • According to Carfax, a salvage title on a car indicates the vehicle was damaged to more than 75 percent of the cost of repairing it. The vehicles are often sold to rebuilders or recyclers who often use them for parts. It is against city regulations for these vehicles to be used as taxis.
75% of the cost of repair equals a salvage title? What about when it's more? Is that cumulative or just from a one-time incident? Because we know of two vehicles that have been under the knife twenty and more times. And more than a few wagons pushing 300,000 miles.

We're just curious, especially with the rumor that Picardi is about to land another job at police headquarters in the Administrative side of things. Whoops! Was that supposed to get out?

Maybe some of our frequent passengers could demand that the city provide them with safer transportation to the lock-up. Now that I think of it, they would probably have a better chance of getting the city to buy new cars than us. After all, we are just taxpaying police officers.

Let's see just how fast this story dies considering the fact that Shortshanks and his spawn, Patrick, are in bed with that Russian cab magnate.

Once again: nothing to see here, folks, move along.

If they are pulling cabs, they might as well pull squad cars. The cabs are probably in better shape.

All the better to get competition to Patrick Daley and his russian cab baron off the road. Nothing happens by accident here.

About 5 to 7 years ago, a lot of our squads were prematurely "retired". They were sold off to 'somebody', leaving the Police Department a bit short of cars.

I wonder if anybody knows anything more about this, or knows who got the gift of some perfectly good cars?

The city is messing with the cab companies but, yet the shit Police cars that are taken out every day by Police Officers would NOT pass any vehicle inspection that the city does to cab companies!

Things that make you go HM!!

My last assigned beat car had over 150,000 on the clock. Know that it was in 2 wrecks. Used about 2 quarts of oil a day.

Wonder if it would have qualified as a salvage??

P.s. lets not forget the 3 transmissions it went thru.

Guess who is going to get rich on this one none other than the Russian mobster in the DALEY crime family. These cabs are owned and operated by independents and now a void will have to be filled.

The city is about to retire out over 100 police officers on April 15th.

This would be a totally a nice story and we wish all of them Good Luck and a Long and Happy Retirement.

Fran Spielman and the rest of the mainstream media will spin this story as what a Happy Day this is for everybody and leave out the economic, street crime, public safety and government corruption angles.

BUT....BUT....BUT

The city and the EVIL LITTLE MAN will not replace them so he can spend their salaries on things that will make his friends rich.

They are being put on an under funded Pension Roll instead of the city Payroll. The medical insurance they get and that we all get may soon be costly but worthless thanks to Obamacare.

The citizens are STILL CHARGED taxes to pay their salaries but ARE NOT GETTING THE POLICE SERVICE.

CITIZENS WILL DIE AS A RESULT OF THERE NOT BEING ENOUGH POLICE on the street due to retirement, (layoffs be attrition) and not hiring.

The Obama administration screams that we must creat jobs yet HOW MANY JOBS ARE LEFT UNFILLED ON THE CPD.

If enough people die as a result of this mismanagement at the highest levels of city government and the department then Jody will have to take the fall. Shorty will blame J-Fled and maybe the citizens will blame Shorty.

The machine is breaking down and perhaps we must let it or should I say we can no longer prevent it, except to see that we survive ourselves and protect as many of the innocent as we can.

Stay Safe, we are about to enter a long bloody summer.
