Appearances

We recall that in corporate America, when you invent, create or improve something on company time or with company assets, then the company owns the product or copyright. The most famous example is the guy who invented Post-It Notes for 3M. He got little or no recognition (or compensation) for inventing something that probably has generated untold billions for 3M - it was his job and he was paid a salary, but 3M owned the product.

We bring it up because someone was kind enough to forward us this little gem of a website:
  • Welcome to ForceStrategy, a full service information technology consulting group providing best-in-class solutions to your public safety agency’s challenges. Our focus is on leveraging our experience to deliver cost-effective results to allow you to meet your objectives.

The principal members of ForceStrategy have successfully implemented these solutions in one of the largest public safety agencies in the country. In many cases, they designed leading systems from scratch. By leveraging their expertise and cutting edges techniques, they can help you make the critical choices necessary to improve the efficiency of your agency. When you engage ForceStrategy, their technique uses the most current national best practices. These solutions have been demonstrated to hundreds of local, state, federal, and international law enforcement agencies around the world and have been showcased at national conferences from coast to coast. ForceStrategy will assess your problems and provide a custom solution—and manage the successful implementation of the project from start to finish, on time and within budget. We can say this because we’ve done it before, hundreds of times.

And who is ForceStrategy?
  • Jonathan Lewin serves as the Chief Information Officer for one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the United States. When this agency adopted its community policing strategy in 1993, he played a pioneering role in developing automated solutions to support the initiative. In his current role, Lewin oversees an innovative portfolio of technology projects that together won Harvard University’s prestigious Innovations in American Government Award from the Kennedy School of Government. Lewin holds an M.A. in Public Policy from Northwestern University and a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He has served as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Illinois at Chicago and chairs the technology committee of a statewide criminal justice information integration board.

Brett Goldstein was an early employee of OpenTable (NASDAQ: OPEN) and was responsible for designing much of the architecture of this multi-national company. As the Director of Information Technology, he played a critical role in ensuring design optimality, uptime, security and performance. After OpenTable, Goldstein joined a major law enforcement agency and was the founder of the Predictive Analytics and Data Mining initiative. In addition, he was a patrol officer in one of the busiest districts of the city receiving multiple awards for his service. Goldstein holds a M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Chicago, a M.S. in Criminal Justice from Suffolk University and a B.A. in Government from Connecticut College. He is currently working on his PhD.

Golly. An exempt and a connected PO working full time jobs with the City of Chicago have time to run a company? We certainly hope that it doesn't utilize knowledge and intellectual property developed at taxpayer expense. And that in-progress PhD, while working a full time job AND a start-up company, that isn't a reimbursement opportunities funded by the taxpayer?

Questions questions questions. Anyone have any answers answers answers? Better get to that website quick before it disappears. Save copies or print them up like we did just so you can remind yourself how legit everything is.

I remember when Lewin was first assigned to Filmore. He worked the desk and rumour has it that he never spent more than a month (total) working the street. Everything has been handed to this tool since day one by this department. No surprise.

Any rumors or inside info as to if the "sleepy" 020 will be going 4/2. I know FOP was there taking a vote in which days voted for, afternoons voted against, and nights was a mixed vote. Assuming downtown didn't like the sleeping cop story it would make sense for them to just make 020 go 4/2 in retailation to the story. Thanks for any info guys.

If you read the whole description on their website, they offer nothing. Ways to use expensive technology to tell you what a beat cop already knows. They use a lot of big words to say nothing though. Education pays off especially when most of it was tuition reimbursed.

Where is this ultra effective software? The CPD sure is not using it so I guess its just another case of all hype and no working product like the rest of the "cool" technology we have. Its good to have degree that you didn't pay for but really something when you have a degree and skills. This sounds like the other guy who made a big deal out of software that didn't and still doesn't work. I guess they got the city to sign off on this. Maybe lewin's deputy is a shareholder!! That's a way to make up for those unpaid days....sell department intellectual property!! Novel idea!!!

Goldstein was never a patrol officer and doesnt have a multiple awards. The only reason he is where he is at is because of his mommy and daddy who are doctors and they contribute heavily to the mayor and the Pritzker foundation. He is total suckass at HQ. This idiot is up in the Superintendents office as a policy group member. How does he recommend policy if he has never truly worked the streeets? He will ride mommy and daddy's coat tails forever and wouldn't be anything on this dept without them. This is the next asshole to have a gold star someday, and one who truely doesn't know what the real po's do on the street everyday or even how to be a police officer. Amazing....how does he find time to do all this outside work when he works in the superintendents office? Not enough to do up there? Maybe he needs to be reaquainted with the streets in a patrol car. ANd what the hell is a guy with 2 masters degrees and working on a PHD doing as a cop? Must be the only dumbass in the family that didnt want to make money. Just wanted the star and gun so he could look tough. You are not fooling anyone Goldstein. Stay upstairs where you belong. Everyone knows you are an idiot when it comes to police policies......

Please don't shut them down yet! I am desperate to buy dozens of crash prone database programs that follow no intelligible operating model and fail to communicate with each other. I simply can't wait to burden my employees with multiple non-networking disasters so they can waste more paid work hours logging in after every action and being forced to copy the info long hand to re-enter it in other programs. I know my staff longs to embrace the third world illiterate model work product. The I can hire dozens, maybe even a hundreds of new employees whose sole task will be to field the frustrated calls to our help desk and spend days before eventually sending out a private vendor employee to address the failures on site. When everything screeches to a standstill I shall have my bald tyrant in charge of everything other than actual accomplishment send out demands for compliance and require hundreds of reports explaining what my managers are doing to enforce compliance. If all goes well this will force my grotesquely over-promoted cadre of morons to establish a systematic program of lies and fabricated data to perpetuate the illusion that things are working. Naturally, my end goal is to force the unrecognized talent in my organization to seek early retirement by droves. If I do this just right I am confident I can drive down my staffing levels to at least 70 or even 60 percent of what I desperately need just to accomplish the work load we faced 30 years ago. We will refuse to acknowledge the explosion in our consumer population and their pathological dependence on our services to manage their lives and keep them from killing each other like they have a license to do it. Most importantly, I shall spend the overwhelming majority of my waking hours lobbying, politicking and kissing ass in an all-encompassing effort to secure a high paying second career. Once in place I can then leap from this burning, spinning hulk as it accelerates towards its inevitable crash and destruction and float on my enormous golden parachute of a pension, landing directly on my new bed of money at the water department, oemc, UIC, CTA, the B of Ed. No, Wait! Even better, I can land gently upon the pension board and devise ways to screw the future retirees of my former department. My entire being just sings with the genius of it all.

Yep, that's right warriors! It's all legitimate. There's no such thing as separation of "classes" within the CPD rank, file and structure. Clout, bloodlines and nepotism do NOT play any role whatsoever in determining cushy assignments, perks, promotions or benefits that may advance your lifestyle, stature, career or income. The City of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department are on the up-and-up. Don't even for a second think otherwise, please...and pay absolutely no attention to the man behind the curtain.

And if time permits during your busy day, please find it in your heart to generate some revenue for your illustrious Mayor; doing otherwise won't justify your hefty raise come the next contract.

Now get out there and bust your ass for a grateful, caring and supportive public and a city government that respects you and your efforts.

Read the website. It says absolutely nothing. Just a bunch of 'buzz words' in various sentences:

Here are some buzzwords culled from their website:

"solutions, challenges, leveraging,
cost-effective, objectives, critical, efficiency, best practices, assess, manage, implementation, budget, committed, life cycle, completion, critical, maximize, emerging, technologies, navigating, advanced, resources, required."

Now I have put them together in the order I took them off the website and just added a few words:

"We have solutions to your challenges, by leveraging
cost-effective objectives for your critical aspects of efficiency, starting with best practices that we will assess, manage, and implement within your budget. We are committed to extending life cycles until the completion of your critical project, maximizing your investment in emerging, technologies, and navigating advanced resources when required."

My random sentences make just as much sense as their website.

Who knows, maybe these guys are looking to bail when Daley and his puppet J-Fled finally succeed in flushing whatever is left of the department down the toilet. It isn’t like they shouldn’t try to profit from their experience in some future venture. Guys and gals on the job do that all the time when they work security gigs and such, they’re just selling access to their experience and “know-how”.

More power to them, we should all be considering our employment options right now.

I figured this guy out a long time ago: When the bosses ask him if something can be done, he promises the world with impossible deadlines and when the people that work for him have been set up for failure, he throws them under the bus. Ask anyone that has worked at ISD and they will tell you the same thing. No one wants to work there and most of the competent people that were there were smart enough to leave. ISD is in shambles and it is directly his fault. ZERO personal skills to boot.

the city should be fining people for "Nuisance violations" like littering, noise, barking dogs, car and burglr alarms constantly going off, block parties making noise till all hours of the morning, drinking in public, public parks; etc; instead of hastling legitimate motorists and businesses. the city knows that the legitimate people always pay up though, so they let the hard to collect from bums slide, always. this is why all Crook County Politicians must be voted out ASAP

Oh, that's an easy one; so that any business trips (lodging, food, entertainment of clients, etc.) to the 'home office' can be written off on taxes.

The last one used department resources to create a position for himself. The last one STILL uses department resources! Who authorized Lewin to work this job and how can someone from the Superintendents office be a part of selling department property without the Superintendent's knowledge? From the look of website it all looks pretty new. It doesn’t look like they have any clients yet or I’d expect they would mention them.

5/03/2010 05:48:00 PM

Your argument doesn't make sense because one of the guys asked to work in the Supts office. Why would he wait for the ax to fall with the Supt. I don't know but it just sounds like they're using department product. And yes to the earlier poster, the department does have many products. The situation is okay if they have permission from the Deputy.

I doubt that this is true since the Deputy Huberman got the city a contract with Oracle that pays hundreds of thousands a year. They write all our software so what is this guys selling? We don't even have any cutting edge software. Maybe it's super secret. If the job paid salaries to create it, no matter who created it, it belongs to the department. I just wish they'd roll that baby out to us! My pdt is ready for some cutting edge apps when its working.

He never acted like a big shot boss and was very personable. We were with him most of the day and he acted like he was our equal. We all had normal conversations with him and never once did he act like he was special. 95% of the bosses on this job would never treat P.O.'s like he did. Many would not even say HI! Don't know much about him, but appreciated the average guy attitude toward us. Just don't see that anymore.

OT a bit, but just wanted to point out our possible future mayor Rahm Emmanuel did far far worse, ethically. Rahm left politics in 1998 and worked less than 3 years for an investment banker. Yet Rahm had absolutely no experience in that field. He has some bullshit phony "communications" degree. But he managed to earn over $16M during that stint.

You think he was hired for his political connections and not his abilities? Good guess. But Rahm jumped at it. And $16M dollars later he's back, and he's all legit again.

Perfect Chicago mayor he'd be.

Who cares?

Being a street cop is not for everybody. In fact, its really only the very few who can do it and do it well.

None of you remember what it was like to get suspect photos from ident. Where people lived, where they'd been arrested, these questions took a lot of foot work to answer.

CLEAR, CHRIS, and Datawarehouse have all made this job much more efficient, even if they've eroded some of this department's street smarts. All the information that is readily available at your fingertips used to take a lot of stops to find out. The problem is, a lot of other things were discovered in those stops. The benefit is, we can't do police work that way anymore, so the computers have given us back the edge that society took away.

The people who helped developed these computer systems may not be real police, but they have done a hell of a lot of good for this department. If they are using their skills to move ahead in life, more luck to them.

They made my job easier at a time when society made it harder. I wish these guys only the best in their future pursuits.
