Parolee With a Gun?

  • A Southwest Side man was charged with attempted first-degree murder, accused of firing up to ten shots at a neighbor as kids milled about in the West Pullman neighborhood Friday night, prosecutors said at the man's bond hearing this afternoon.

Ramone Shaffers, 28, of the 11700 block of South Lafayette Avenue, was ordered held without bond at the Saturday hearing by Judge Donald Panarese.

Assistant State's Atty. Sam Cervera told the court this afternoon that Shaffers and his 44-year-old next-door neighbor were arguing at about 7 p.m. Friday outside their homes. Shaffers allegedly punched the neighbor, sending the older man to the ground, Cervera said. Shaffers then pulled a gun and fired a shot at the neighbor's head, missing, the prosecutor said.

  • Shaffers was arrested after a short chase, the prosecutor said. He has three prior felony convictions, most recently a 2006 aggravated assault to a police officer, for which he's still on parole. He was further charged with a habitual criminal being armed, a felony.
Quick question - this jagoff fires off almost 10 rounds, hitting nobody and gets charged with Attempted Murder. But the asshole who clocked two girls in the head with a baseball bat isn't facing Attempted Murder? Are we missing something in the charging hierarchy?

This man couldn't have possibly had a gun - - -isn't having a handgun in the city of Chicago against the law? Especially a felon? It just couldn't be. Just ask the Mayor.

That's the problem.... There are too many convicted felons with guns period. This state is too soft on crime, afraid of intimidation by gangs, and not enough mandated sentences.
This state needs laws such as Florida and Texas. I forgot they are Red states.

The fucking ASA's are throwing chicken bones, throwing darts or rolling dice to determine the charges, that's what's happening.

A SOUTHWEST SIDE man? From 117th and Lafayette? So much for "credible reporting." Must be a new batch of journalism majors hired on for the summer. Learn the City first before you drink from the 5th floor Kool Aid, stupid.

ok, is it me?? is the state etc. not supposed to charge everyone with the highest possible charge/offense. let the bad guy's lawyers then plea down to an agg batt. you start high so they get scared and settle for a lower charge. so whats up with the agg battery in the baseball bat incident. i called the ASA's office to tell them that even i know this simple principle

Had a gun pointed at my chest a few months ago while on surveillance. ASA went with simple assault.

they ASA wants slamdunk cases. no grey area at all. they wont give you a charge on a weak or reluctant victim or witness.cop a plea or stronger case on a lesser charge=conviction rate. the law abiding citizen movie isnt that far out of touch with reality. i ve seen bad cases pushed hard and good cases go away...but mostly they want it all tied up in a pretty little bow.

Smashing the fuck out of some young girl when you just as easily could have grabbed her purse and ran is attempted murder. I don't see how it could be viewed any other way. He wanted to kill those girls.

Sick, useless, fuck!

Yes, you are missing something. The Crook county ASA crew are a bunch of gutless asswipes and couldn't get a conviction for attempted murder on this high profile case. So the "safe" thing to do is go with the aggravated battery.

Total and complete useless tools. Now if it was to screw a cop, well that's another story altogether.

Old Retired Guy Here. Getting charges approved by ASA's,and what the formula, for what charges they would place, was always a mystery to me. One thing I remember was that if the victim had ever known the offender at any time during their life, your chances of getting a robbery of rape charge was Zero.
Burglary Charges, were sometimes approved with nothing, but a unlawful entry. Sometimes the offender would have prior convictions, with the proceeds piled at the door, and charges disapproved.
PS: Have a nice day.

This case will go directly to the grand jury, if it hasn't already, as the victims are still hospitalized. There will be no preliminary hearing as it will be superseded by indictment and attempt murder will be one of the charges.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not sticking up for the ASA who authorized charges. It seems that too many of them have gone to public defender school.
