Cozzi Ribbons

We have received word that some enterprising souls made a few THOUSAND of these ribbons for St. Jude. They will be passing them out at the parade.

Since there are bound to be a whole bunch of uptight bosses running around, we're going to advise keeping them up your sleeve until such time as your marching unit is assembled and everyone is in position before making this last minute addition to the uniform.

A final suggestion would be to drop the yellow ribbons around the reviewing stand so they blow around J-Fled and the Pussy Cats, but we're sure a number of people would rather keep the ribbons as souvenirs, mail them to Bill or maybe use the intra-departmental mail to send them to Unit 111, care of J-Fled.

PLEASE NOTE: We have received a legal opinion that this is politically protected free speech, especially when you are attending St. Jude's on your own time without compensation. Any boss that confronts an officer exercising his First Amendment Rights can and should be subject to a Civil Rights complaint, including damages. Note the name, time, and location.

UPDATE: Some people are saying this isn't the time or place and there must be a better forum with which to express our opinions. OK, where? When? On-duty in the Districts? J-Fled won't go there because he might have to run away again and the bosses will nickel and dime you with the "unauthorized decorations" on the uniform. At an FOP meeting? Yeah, J-Fled will show up there along with the brass. At a City Hall march? That ain't happening since the contract has been settled.

There's only one place that J-Fled can't flee from and you have a few thousand cops off-duty that are actually able to exercise their First Amendment Rights without interference from the brass (remember, on duty you are an agent of the government - you have no opinion).

UPDATE II: We are forcibly reminded of a day not too long ago when the mother of a slain officer lambasted Mayor Daley in front of God and everybody about the time it took to get us a contract. She stood up for each and every one of us like no one has before or since.

Those of you who are saying not to politicize the march, remember Mrs. Strouse. On that day, she was an advocate for all of the living even though her only son was dead. We can't imagine that all of our dead would object that heartily to a statement made on behalf of the living.

Thank-you SCC, for posting this as a BIRTHDAY PRESENT for BILL COZZI,

The "enterprising souls" included a ticket in the bags for these that read,

"Please wear a Ribbon to Support BILL COZZI & All the Other Cops Who Have Been Wronged. This Is Not About Politics, It's About Brotherhood. Stay Safe. Reminders: This is a First Amendment Right Please Do Not Litter With These."

So please show them then keep them as souvenirs of the day we stood up for one of our own, our department, officer safety and our city.

Please don't think I'm defending this guy....what he did to Bill Cozzi was reprehensible, and then lying about it afterwards makes it even worse....but the St Jude's Parade is the wrong time/wrong place for this kind of demonstration. The political rivalries that have formed thanks to misguided leadership from City Hall and ignorant leadership from 35th and Michigan have created the climate in which we exist today. But that's not what St Jude's is all about. It's a memorial for the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice; and I'm thinking it might be a dishonor to their memory to show our displeasure with the Department....maybe I'm being too old fashioned, but I think there's a better place and time for this.

As much as I support your cause, I really think this idea will hurt Bill more than help him. Tomorrow is not the day for this kind of demonstration. St Jude is all about remembering our fallen men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. If you want to demonstrate, plan something at 35th Street on a different day. God bless the officer(s) instrumental in trying to free Bill. I am with you, but tomorrow is really not the right day..

Ignore "anonymous" posters such as 10:48 and 11:01 AM as the COWARD J-FLED and/or his sycophants/suckholes.

GOD BLESS THE FIRST AMENDMENT!

I think St. Jude is the perfect place and time to show J-Fled first hand that he is not wanted. He is not a cop and never will be. He is a coward and a puppet. He railroaded Cozzi to show that he was serious about coming in and "cleaning" up this Dept. Yes, St. Jude is a time and place to honor those that have given the sacrifice, those that rode 10-99 and still got it done, those that worked midnights and went to court all day and then right back to work. Those that chased savages through dark alleys and wrestled in gangways full of broken glass. Those that had to bury their partner, or watch many of their friends and co-workers get put into the ground over their 30+ year careers. How many of you have done this?? Has J-Fed? No, hasn't. But yet WE, who have done all this and then some, have to walk by him on OUR day to honor our fallen friends while he stands up there pretending to be a cop in OUR uniform!!?? I say FUCK HIM, see my yellow ribbon J-Fed; it's means YOU'RE NOT WELCOMED HERE ANYMORE!! How dare you stand in that uniform at St. Jude. You're not one of us and you are a coward and a liar. You don't know what it means to EARN that star. All of those pictures in front of you and the people marching past you are cops that earned it!! St. Jude is the exact time and place to show J-Fed how much he is not wanted. Stick together for once, it's only 1 hour !!!!

You are too old fashioned. We are in desperate times and must use every opportunity to show our opinion. St Jude's was to honor the fallen but with J-FLED as our leader it has changed. Why can't we march on Michigan Ave? Return to tradition and march on Michigan ave then I will attend. In the meantime wear the ribbon for jfed.

I have to say every single policeman on the memorial wall made the ultimate sacrifice. They were all true policeman, they earned the right to call themselves Chicago policeman prior to their tragic death. I think they know we are their for them but we are also their to celebrate the life of the Chicago police department family. What this current administration has done to this family is unforgivable. What does a family do when it feels attacked or threathened, we come together and stand strong and fight for our cause. Bill cozzi was/ is apart of our family and we have a moral obligation to stand together and fight for him and many others just like him and thats how we should honor our fallen brothers and sister and I know truely they would be proud of us! For the families of our lost, we can do something special for them without the direction of our current administration.

I know what we can do for the families, get word out to the gold star foudation that we are not going to march but we want them to leave our administration standing on the grandstand alone and meet all of us at the memorial wall for a prayer service and we will read each name aloud off the wall and pay special tribute to that members family who are present and give them a opprutinity to speak

5/01/2010 12:01:00 PM

Two things: it's a march to honor the dead. That's why the Gold Star Families are on the reviewing stand. When you get the command "Eyes left," or "Eyes right," it's to pay your respects to them, not J-Fled. That's why I disagree with bringing other issues into the march. Also, you CAN be written up for wearing an unauthorized adornment to your uniform. Any action that the bosses think is contrary to the mission of the department on or off duty, can be alleged in a CR. Can we put aside hatred for J-Fled and the mayor for ONE DAY?

I work in 025 and it is "Bill Cozzi Central". But in the end most of the officers are hypocrites.

The officers, on 3rd watch are all generating tons of activity. Just because a fat ass sgt. demanded activity. Then on 1st watch Lt. K.S. said "I will reward workers" and guess what? People generated tons of activity.

It is sad to say but I will say it- the officers only think about themselves. And yet then they will blame the media, the union, the mayor, etc.... but never themselves.

To the old guy and the better time/better place guy, think about two things.

One, our honored dead, at least the ones with which I worked, would not want us to suffer in silence. They had balls and would not want us to pretend nothing is wrong with their department, especially at a march dedicated to them. If we continue to suffer in silence, we have dishonored our honored dead.

And two, if not there and then, please tell us where and when.

Old guy and better time/better place guy, you are sheeple, the likes of people hiding with their heads in the sand.

Bad times call for strong people that take action. Be one of them, instead of being a weakling. You'll be glad you showed strength amid adversity. The march is the rightful place for this simple, silent protest.

im in complete support of bill and completly against f jled..but come on guys... this is st jude. im sorry, im not tryin to be a scab or a "yes man" but I will not go to st jude to make a statement. The only statement Im going to make is to remember my friends who have died doing this job and for the familes that have lost a loved one. sure, jfed disgraces everyone who wore a uniform and died on this job but its not about that... there are plenty of people on this job that are a disgrace to the uniform but its not about that... its not about jfled, the administration, getting out of uniform inspection, politics or kissing the ring...its about our friends who have died and thier families PERIOD! Dont turn this into some march just to bash jfed where everyone talks about the yellow ribbons after the march... after the march everyone should be telling stories of the past with friends who have been lost and having a good time remembering them...not about how you really stuck it to jfled.. come on boys and girls... lets use some common sense here... im all for the cause but to do it here is childish and out of line... think about the families.. and throwing the ribbons on the ground??!!?? in our park?? I hope we are adult enough to think this over.

Coppers have been fired and/or sent to jail for bullshit, your pension has been stolen/borrowed till its in trouble of dying!
When do you fight back?
I have partners on the wall and I'm pretty sure that being dead would not change their feelings of the assholes that run this city or the job!
They might have a say so about what you wear on the uniform whether you are on or off duty so if your told to take it off I would do so. I would like to know which boss would tell anyone to take it off.

5/01/2010 01:52:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

If it's a day to honor the dead---think about if you were dead, if you had lost your one and only precious life in the line of duty, how would you feel about the current police administration? Would you think it was worth dying for? Did you die doing what you loved, believed in and felt you were called to do? Or did you lay your life on the line for those assholes that sucked and fucked their way to the podium by scheming and screwing over the guys you work side by side with?

It may or may not be the time and place but DO IT anyway. You'll regret it when you're older if you don't. They DEPEND on you to fall in line. They need you to be quiet and complacent. It's how they got where they are. When I think back of times I kept my mouth shut, looked the other way or kept my opinions to myself because I was afraid of a backlash by someone with power or authority and how they might try to fuck me over later, and then I look around today and see how people who aren't worth two cents aren't afraid of any repercussions for anything, I am angry that I didn't stand up for what I believed in when I had the chance. I speak up now though and you know what I found out? What I know for sure is that very few people in authority deserve to be there, give a shit about anything other than themselves and never really have any convictions or values other than to posture when it will make them look good. If they watch one thing compulsively, it's the tide of public opinion. And they will stare at the ground and shuffle their feet when confronted with someone who has valid point and a heart worth the body it's beating in. They thrive in secret and disappear when someone shines a light on them. Most of them are cowards who made a living out of avoiding any kind of legitimate decision or confrontation. Surprisingly, when challenged, they usually do nothing or nothing happens. I wish I would have learned this earlier in life, but at least I know now.

Stand up for this guy Cozzi. He's rotting in a hot, humid, jail cell for giving some unruly jagoff a few taps and he can't even receive Communion for Christ sake. If he were a Muslim he'd be suing the government by now for not having a place to wash his fucking feet five times a day with a straight view of Mecca. You guys have been shit on the past 3 years and all you have is each other. This is an opportunity to speak with a unified voice. What J-Fled did, and Daley allowed to happen, should be the beginning and the end for this Superintendent.

Someone who said he remembers "how it used to be" posted a comment in another thread about "the wives" and how much power they held over the City. I've read posts about a mother who had the courage to tell the Mayor at her son's funeral to give the police a contract. And Airhart is still waiting for the fucking Feds to save him. If you can't do it for the dead, do it for the living. Think about the Gold Star wives and children and how they endure the agony every day of their lives for the husband, wife, son, daughter, mother or father they lost. You all take on this job despite the possibility you may lose your life because of it, but the people you leave behind suffer more than you will ever imagine.

Those in authority have an obligation to provide a department that is WORTH risking your life FOR. They want warriors? Give them warriors. Make them accountable for the promises and rhetoric. Drop those yellow strips down your jacket sleeve if you're paranoid but drop them. It's so nice and windy by the lake. What a picture that would make, all those yellow strips swirling around the heads of J-Fled and Daley, like locust in the lens of every reporter's photographer.

I am sorry for the rant. This is one of those difficult, maybe heated debates, and I might be out of line, but if it was me looking down on all of you, I'd say fuck it, go for it. YOU are The Chicago Police Department. Not them, you.

Related Topic:

Once again the St. Jude’s March is upon us. A time where we gather in the early morning hours of the first Sunday in May to pay tribute to all who sacrificed themselves in the line of duty. They were Members of this profession who willfully dawned the uniform to perform a task that many others either do not have the courage or ability to do so. It is a uniform that to the law abiding person commands respect, and to the criminal restricts their freedom. A Policeman’s uniform is the epitome of authority, respected by most. However it can also instill such fear into an individual that they would do all within their power to flee from that same uniform. It is a somber reminder of how a person could lose their life based on what they represent.

So why is it that an entire Bureau of this Department believes that they are above wearing that uniform for a procession that doesn’t last even an hour? BIS should abandon their elitist attitudes and wear that uniform for a parade honoring their brethren. Remember, regardless of where that Officer may work be it an Area or out of Homan Square, regardless of the job title code, that Officer is still a P.O. assigned as a Detective. It is the only level of promotion where the Officer could return back to being a PO in Patrol. Please do not present the argument of the Homan Square people’s long hair or other gruff exteriors preventing them from wearing a uniform since the few moments participating in a parade pales in comparison to the multiple uniform violations observed on a daily basis. And if the narcotics PO, or any other secret squirrel PO argues that they can’t dress in uniform in fear of being seen by a CI, then you should be nowhere near a Parade of Policemen or even an Officer’s Funeral. Other POs assigned as something else (Canine, ETs, Mounted, Marine) all wear their uniforms, why not the Police Officer Assigned as a Detective or all the chosen from Homan.

There are reasons why we have civilian dressed units and how they impact the public’s impression regarding an investigation. A Detective gains his or her respect by the proper conservative attire. The narcotics, vice, or gang guys and gals gain more of a rapport with the elements by being dressed the way they patrol. However there is also a reason why we call the uniform the “Dress Blues” and this is the one time a year we should be “Dressed” up.

Granted this is my opinion, one which may not sit well with those in said BIS, but I feel that an additional few hundred additional well dressed uniformed Officers would make a much greater impression. Also, before you speculate or label me as being “jealous”, I have marched with both groups and had a title code higher than Police Officer. Now retired, I will stand on the sideline to observe first-hand the mass showing of support the CPD as well as other Departments express towards the Gold Star Families. Be safe out there boys and girls and continue to back each other up.

I was at the Run to Remember this morning. At the starting line they introduced J-Fled in order for him to say a few words of "encouragement". No one applauded when they announced him. It was so funny. It was also sad in a way. Nobody has any respect for this fool and he doesn't seem to get it. He said he wasn't running because he had a prior commitment. At least the guy showed up, I guess. When J-Fled announced P.O. Medina, the crowd erupted and rightfully so. P.O. Medina probably has more leadership skills in his pinky finger than J-Fled has in his entire "avid bodybuilder" body.

Fuckin’ Geniuses to make these. The Parade is also for those who have been wronged in body and spirit, by felons on the street and in our headquarters. Weis is far beyond a bad manager of police. He is outright dangerous, to the lives and safety of good officers on the department. He is racking up a body count of cops, dead, injured, disabled and imprisoned all for the bottom line of Richard M. Daley’s pals.

Weis is Daley’s hatchetman, his cost cutter. Bill was a casualty of that cost cutting and we owe it to him for his birthday in that Louisiana hellhole.

PRAY FOR THE DEAD,
WORK LIKE HELL FOR THE LIVING

God Bless Bill Cozzi and we wish we could give you a better birthday present.

Bill, a great and courageous cop, who made one mistake that was caught on video so became the victim of Jody’s incompetence and Richie’s corrupt greed.

Jody made an example of Bill to show Richie, and us in an over the top way how far he would go to keep cops from doing anything that might bring a lawsuit to the city. He was willing to ruin a good cop and his family for that example for Richie’s greed. Since Jody is not the police, he had no way to know the effect this would have on the morale of the rank and file. Or maybe he thinks we are broken, and we can show him we are not and we still have fight left in us.

My opinion is to wear the ribbons in a dignified manner, don’t litter, don’t hiss, this should be a silent protest. If you see any reporters, photographers or news crews there give them a ribbon and, off camera explain the significance.

To those who asked how to get buy the ribbons, they were never for sale. Some will be sent to Bill so if you send him a card or letter he can send one back. Also there is someone who is selling blue wristbands in 025.

Stay Safe, Reminder, this is all First Amendment Protected Speech, no department resources were used.

As much as I want to..this is a time to honor our dead, not put a finger in J-Fled's eye. I will just ignore him as usual.

What happens when you find a suspicious lump on your body? You go to a doctor to have it tested to see if it's benign or if it's cancerous. If you ignore it you run the risk of it spreading and killing you.

J-Fled is a cancer in this department and it's time that we stop ignoring him.

Wear the ribbon.

I think that the men and women who we will be honoring tomorrow would be proud that we are standing up for what is right...and I still think that we should skip the "for the bosses" parade and meet at the Memorial. That would truly be honoring our fallen heroes.

I agree the Parade is not the time or place to exercise your freedom of speech. Tomorrow is to show love and support for those that paid the ultimate sacrifice their lives. We need to show their families that we have not forgotten them. It is not eyes right it is eyes left. It is not to show respect to the sup it is for the families. We are not doing this in support of the sup or the mayor again it is for the families. I am not a fan of either of them, but I will not under any circumstances disrespect the families of those police officers that lost their loved one or myself. I hate what has become of this department but I will not dishonor it. I hope you all think long and hard about what you are planning to do tomorrow. You will have to live with it.

After over forty years on the job and over 100 stars in the memorial case, I say to you with out fear of contradiction that St. Jude Parade is the bosses' parade. They appropriated the honor the dead concept in order to serve their need to show solidarity to the public. March if you wish and for whatever reason with or without the Cozzi ribbon, but never confuse this event with the belief that the hierarchy of the CPD or the entrenched government will act in your best interests. Before anyone pops off learn how we arrived at this situation. Remember that thing about those not knowing history repeating it. Not one of us invented the job. Where we are is a work in progress.

Though I personally disagree with the idea, I did a quick search on the history of the march. Here's what I found:

"1932: Saint Jude Police League is established as an active sponsor of charities and to support Chicago officers. During the 1950s, the League initiated one of the Chicago Police Department's finest traditions: the annual march held on the first Sunday of May to honor the memory of every honorable police officer who ever served, and particularly those who died in the performance of duty."

I support Bill 100%, through our correspondence, he knows that. I think our politicians and sup are rotten and feel nothing but contempt for them. I am not an "ass-kisser", etc, as previous posts suggest as reasons for not taking part in the ribbon plan. I do, however, agree with those who feel this is not the day to express my feelings to J-Fled or anyone else. Despite the fact that Bill is an honorable police officer, he is not just a memory. He is alive and this is about the dead. Please think about the feelings of a widow or child that lost his Daddy and what thoughts they may have tomorrow. It is them that we are there to comfort tomorrow. Write to Bill tomorrow night, make your voices heard on another day. Somehow. But please, not tomorrow. It is a time to remember the dead.
Another thought: aside from thinking that they are assholes for their beliefs, when insenstive bastards protest at soldier funerals, my first thought is never politics, but rather, "how could they not respect those mourning their dead loved one. how could they do that there, at that time."
Different, I know, but please think about the families. This is our fight, not theirs.

Tape them to the computer screen frames.

But I know a sh$tload of people will chicken out. Just like they did for his appeal hearing. I was there, in uniform to show my support...where were all the people that swore they were going to show up to that? I will do the same tomorrow. Showing my support for Bill doesn't mean I'm not supporting the families of our fallen brothers or showing disrespect to the fallen themselves. It's your choice people. I stand by my decision.

There is case law that prohibits what a policeman can and cannot say or do while in public

There is also case law limiting in certain situations what he can say or do while off duty when the person witnessing the act knows or can infer that the person is indeed a police officer

The consequences are in most cases Administrative not criminal, but there can be consequences nonetheless

Im not an attorney. However it was explained to me once by an attorney who also happens to be a supervisor on the job.

I cant remember specific for instances but I do know that there are ways that one can suffer Administrative wrath when one thinks one is exercising one's right to "free speech"

When one is wearing the uniform, and in the public view whether one is on the clock or on his own time, it is inferred that he is a Dept member and therefore must conduct himself in a proper manner

Not that taking a day for improperly adorning one's uniform is the end of the world.

But it is possible that wearing something that could construed as bringing discredit to the Dept on one's uniform will end up being a problem

Cozzi wasn't their battle, not their concern, they hurt still from the tragic loss of their loved ones.

I am all for sending J-Fled the ribbons in a department envelope through dept. mail to the supe's office.

It's time to show that it's not just some disgruntled cops.

That it's not just a "crazy" retired sergeant.

That it wasn't the fact that we had no contract.

That a majority of the rank and file (and maybe a few bosses) are extremely unhappy with him and that he has a responsibility to keep his word; to leave if he is the cause of low morale.

If not now, then when?

I went to the memorial Saturday evening with my family...it's amazing. The years go by, and slowly, the names aren't just names anymore...they are people you rode with, people you went through doors with, people you shared your brightest moments in your life with. I've been doing this for that past two years, paying my respects to the fallen on the Saturday before St. Jude.
I just cannot bring myself to marching in the parade anymore, with that boatload of IMPOSTERS in the reviewing stand, awaiting our salutes. I cannot salute shit, and that's all I see now when I gave at a photo of the Supt., Chief of Staff, the two Asst. Supts., and the Deputy Supts. they have all sold out our dept., our traditions and our history of caring for one another in order to sit under the table of Shortshanks.
I'll return to the parade and march PROUDLY when all of those hacks I mentioned have disappeared from our ranks, not a second before.

5/01/2010 11:01:00 AM

The sad thing is, this is really the only time our voice is heard silently. I watched our Commander not even look his way as we past the stage and refuse to salute him. I saw so many officers do the same thing. After we passed, I stood back and saw the faces of disgust as police passed him. It is really a loss to this department having someone as he represnting us. It is even more sad that the Mayor has not done a thing about it. I can't wait until 2011. Mayor Daley will be defeated and he thank his $300,000.00 a year, sorry excuse for a leader J-Fled for that!

First of all, I want to thank you for your support and for attending the march.
Like most members of the Chicago Police, I am very upset for what Weis did to Cozzi. I personally march on St. Jude solely to honor our fallen officers. I believe that using the march for any other purpose would take away some of the solemn meaning for the day.

Sorry dude, it is HER district and so what if you are pissed because she would not let you wanna be clout fucks continue to do fucked up shit in this shit hole of a District. Believe me, many of us miss her. The shit that is going on around here is just stupid. She definately has more balls than you. Oh, that is what you are pissed about! You expect her to look like a lost puppy dog and live her life sad and distraught. Hold your head up Henny Penny, make em sweat! I like that about her, I am going to have to ask her out!

"He buried the results of the Morale and Stress Survey.

P.S. It's Chicago. Everything's politics."

Amen, brother!

"Where's the results of the morale survey???/Whatever happened to that?"

The powers that be decided it was unnecessary; morale is great!

Stress is non-existent on CPD!

It's a freakin' love fest!

"Though I personally disagree with the idea [of wearing the yellow ribbons], I did a quick search on the history of the march. Here's what I found:

'1932: Saint Jude Police League is established as an active sponsor of charities and to support Chicago officers. During the 1950s, the League initiated one of the Chicago Police Department's finest traditions: the annual march held on the first Sunday of May to honor the memory of every honorable police officer who ever served, and particularly those who died in the performance of duty.'"

You just provided ammunition >in favor< of wearing the ribbon; "...honor the memory of every honorable police officer who ever served..."

Bill is honorable. He served. He deserves to be recognized.

There but for the grace of God, go I. (and I'll bet many of you)

Noone is doing anything because anyone "demands" it of us. We work because it's 3rd watch in a busy district and shit falls into our laps.
