Mette Suspension for Real

  • The city agency that investigates alleged police misconduct has recommended that a Chicago police officer jailed in Iowa for punching a party host be suspended for 90 days.

In a summary of its decision made public today, the Independent Police Review Authority sustained four of the seven allegations against Officer Michael A. Mette.

  • So when Chicago’s Independent Police Review Authority late last year recommended an unpaid 90-day suspension for Mette, Weis strongly objected, sources say. That wasn’t the end of the matter, though.

Under the ordinance that created the Independent Police Review Authority, disagreements between the superintendent and the agency over punishment go before a three-member panel of the Chicago Police Board.

The superintendent’s office is expected to argue against suspending Mette. A hearing isn’t scheduled yet, sources said.

And a guy who just wanted to be the police, served 11 months in prison for a crime that didn't actually occur, and is currently honoring the deceased of this Department and others by participating in the Memorial Bike Ride, is stuck in the middle again.

Mette made some mistakes in that Iowa incident, but nothing to justify this stupidity.

He was punished enough. Let me rephrase that, he was punished way too much. He never should have been criminally charged and the Iowa appellate court agreed.

Let it go and let him go on with what I hope will be a decent career and long life.

Let's not blame Iowa again, let't put the blame where it belongs all along, the IPRA who was most likely behind this Iowa-Chicago investigation and pushing it all along. No matter how hard you try.
No matter how hard you work.
No matter how clean you stay.

The planets just won't line up, and you're 'gonna take it in the ass. And No, they won't spit on it first, and there will be no reach around.

When that happens, it's time to devise a graceful exit strategy.

Hey, Mr. Mette:

Get the fuck out of Dodge. Get out of this POS city and get a job in a decent suburb. At some point it's not worth the struggle.

Don't listen to those who tell you to "Not Give Up". They mean well, but there's no longer any sense of honor amongst these phony "leaders" like Weis/Daley.

After doing 11 months in PRISON though, the finding should be,

SUSTAINED: Violation noted, no disciplinary action taken.

This commentator is pretty accurate. Do you remember about 2 yrs ago when OPS/IPRA hired private lawyers to do investigations so they could catch up on their backlog of outstanding cases? Well, the backlog is gone, and a lot of law firms have laid off lawyers. The IPRA hired lawyers are pushing cases by adding on ridiculous charges, necessitating re-investigations or needing more time to complete.
The Dept and IPRA are fighting over a lot of cases due to these lawyers trying to make money by this method. Incredibly shoddy investigations, charges which make no sense or lack a factual basis to even be included on a list of allegations, and outright cases of exceeding authority are now a regular thing. My source tells me there is no end in sight unless city council puts a clamp on IPRA's authority, which they are not inclined to do.
I may not post as much as in the past, but when I have good info, I will pass it on.

I'm sick of hearing about guys getting screwed. Are we completely defenseless?

So Mike Mette should have to leave an honorable position doing his job in an honorable way????

Why, because Chicago is dishonorable and CORRUPT???

Give me a fucking break!

Keep railroading honorable coppers and watch this city turn into a shithole like Detroit overnight.

Mike Mette is a good guy, a working copper who does the job.

If anything Mette is probably the most vigilant copper in the world against sandbagging...

The LIBERALS should rejoice with a copper like Mette on the job.

I just hope all unjustly fired coppers receive the same level of justice afforded Mike Mette.

I hope Mike Mette speaks up against the injustices of the two-tier system of justice on the CPD.

Mike Mette is in an unusual position of public admiration that some police officers have not been accorded and can bring light upon a corrupt system that has buried some very good and innocent coppers.

Mike Mette will WIN and should assist his sisters and brothers in obtaining justice.

Any INJUSTICE done to one is done to all!

Mike, don't forget those who fought vigilantly at your side and behind the scenes.

I expect Mike Mette to become a spokesperson for the officers that have been railroaded by a corrupt system of justice.

We fought tooth and nail for you brother, please don't forget us!

Some coppers forget to realize that this could be you tomorrow or your partner!

This is AS important as remembering those LOD's.

NEVER FORGET!

May is Police Memorial month, we remember our dead. Please remeber and reach out to those who were UNJUSTLY terminated from the job or who are stripped in a non-police status.

It could be you or me tomorrow in the box or at ARPS

FREE COZZI!

And I don't have it in me to just lay down and not work. But I'm not sure what else I can do that will pay this well. If anyone has ideas I would love to hear them. You are WISE beyond your years, young man! Leave now, before you feel you have too much time invested to bail from what this PD has become, just a shithole job! There are some really high quality depts. around here in the suburbs....look around.
They'd like to have someone of your experience, and you can certainly live with less stress.....

DON'T look for Mette to bring light into anything. He feels he owes J-Fled and RayRay, and when RayRay recruited him to join the MSF shortly after Mette was rehired by CPD, he jumped at it.
Mette feels that those two were the 'hands' that fed him, and he won't nibble at their stinky little fingers.

Yes, but you're "less damned" if you don't do the job; once you take action, you stand a far greater chance of getting in more trouble than if you do nothing.

Sad, but true. Welcome to CPD of the 21st Century!

You might start by spelling it correctly and then sounding it out with your voice one syllable at a time!

Is that the best you tolls from the mayor's office can come up with? You really impressed us with your wit and vast command of the English language as you laid into an officer for a typo. Oh, and before I forget, stay the fuck off of our web site you fucking political hack.

Hopefully Mike will win big with his suit against the Iowa Justice system and then he wont need this job any more. Its a shame that a good copper with a strong family police background may leave this department because of Bull Shit! Mike when you win big maybe send a few bucks for a Cozzi appeal. He does not belong in jail either!!!!!! Bills punishment does not fit the crime by a reasonable mans or womans standard!!!

If Mike takes a suspension for 90 days we should all do nothing for those 90 days. Show your support for your fellow brother who was wronged not once but twice and who knows how many more times he will be wronged by our dept. in the future. Most of us talk a big game but here and now we should stand up for one of our own.

Used to be lots of political hacks and lawyers. Now you got some ex cops, lawyers, and even a retired CPD commander and an area detective sergeant as IPRA investigators.
Don't underestimate them, some of them are decent, and some of them are good at their jobs!

I had the same urge when I had 2.5 years on, I really saw tis place for what it was and had the strong urge to leave. That was over 22 years ago. I never left. I had some good years with a great partner. The rest has been mostly frustration and dealing with political department bullshit. Now I can leave in 3 more. I can coast these last three years. It is so sad how they fucked this job all to hell. Get something going first, then quit.

To whoever was asking why IPRA is involved in Mike's beef...any and all complaints of excessive force go to IPRA to be investigated. IAD does not do excessive force complaints even if there is a criminal investigation to go with it. Hope this helps. Look up the ordinance defining IPRA's investigative duties. This however doesn't state that the investigation has to be fair, complete, or unbiased. For everyone out there, have faith. I know of one person that is preparing to file a very large lawsuit against the city/IPRA for not investigating a complaint and submitting it for discipline while ignoring evidence to the contrary. Hopefully there will be a big payday involved.

Think twice about the move. Where will you go? Most departments stopped hiring or are laying off officers. We are lucky to be working. At least you can take your time as you look. But things are not that bad here despite the complaints. Pay is good and great benefits.

This is what the Chicago voters wanted. They wanted Daley and they are going to keep Daley because no one electable will run against him. So, this is the police department the citizens of Chicago wanted with a Mayor who wants the Hague to determine Chicago gun laws. Yup, its about the voters guys. Good luck with that.
