Eight Hours in School?

  • What's not to like, some parents and local school council members said about the Chicago Public Schools' proposal for a pilot eight-hour day at 100 struggling elementary schools.

But some educators said the plan won't work.

Of course it won't. The Teachers Union would never go for this, not without massive increases in pay.
  • Unionized teachers slammed the proposal, which CPS says would use computers, software and non-teachers to supervise the extra two hours.

"To put an uncertified person in front of students should not be called education, that is called baby-sitting," Chicago Teachers Union President Marilyn Stewart charged.

Same thing with the CPS engineers, maintenance, janitors. This is another "smoke and mirror" proposal that hints at possible changes without anything substantial behind it. Kind of like Shortshanks touting 44 extra cops on the street in the face of a thousand retirements this year alone.

How dare you enjoy something that is not enjoyed by the citizens of the ghetto? I refuse to go to another hockey game until there is a good that I or a family member will become a victim of a crime during the game.

Chicago Public Schools have pne of the shortest school days in the country. Teachers who don't have to live in the city want to get an early jump on traffic when commuting to Maywood or Bellwood or Markham, whatever. We lock these out of control hoodlums up. Can you imagine having to be unarmed in a school FULL of them??? I'd wanna boogie outta there too!

Shortshanks and the rest of the DubmocRAT libtards won't settle until they have a National Socialist or Communist style youth movement that is programmed by the state to turn in parents and any others who dare question the authority of the state to run all aspects of life.

Big government is the death of freedom. Remember that the next time you want them to handle the business you should handle yourselves.

Don't bash the teachers.

As 12:25 said, imagine going into those places unarmed everyday for 30 years. The teachers are now learning what it's like to become scapegoats. Even POTUS Hussein has turned on them recently because nobody can speak the truth about the problem. In reality, about 20% of the kids in the system have some potential...which means that 80% are hopeless.

This is the result of 75 years of liberalism blended with 173 years of political corruption.

A friend who teaches at reconstituted Harper HS said that "more than half" the kids come to school "high" in the morning.

Another friend's daughter is a middle-grade CPS teacher, despite that daughter's unregulated bipolar condition, habitual drug-taking, and gangbanger-drug dealer ex-con husband disruptive household. Certainly not a role-model, hardly a competent teacher, yet gainfully employed by CPS for past decade. Guess you need only to be a "breathing bachelor-degree graduate" to teach at CPS.

CPS is a haven for underperforming teachers enjoying the shortest school day possible, for a 8-month work-year. (With exception of those three gold-plated prep schools, of course)

Time for year-round school with 3 week breaks in April, August, and December. Also increase the school day to 7 hours.

As for the teachers union talking about baby sitters, what do they think they are now?

I get home in the morning and the kids at the middle school across the street from my home are getting to school (0800 hrs). About the time I am getting up (1330 hrs) the buses are lining up and the kids are leaving school. I seem to remember school starting at 0730 and getting out at 1500 when I went to school. 5 1/2 hour school day (plus the teachers get one hour off in the day)? This is just laziness on the part of the teachers...they don't even want to try anymore.

Make 'em too tired to be lollygaggin' & bullshittin' and keep 'em that way.

The problem is that there is no fear and terror based incentive to not fuck-off/fuck-up/fuck-around/fuck it up...

Too resolutely ignorant to avail themselves of a gift that some children in other parts of the world would kill for... A free education from the ages of 5 to 17.

Whoops, sorry! Usually the parent(s) have to give a fuck to have lit the appropriate temperature of fire under the little ass for proper motivation.

All smoke and mirrors. Check out Dunbar HS in 021. Old Mrs. Smith's detention room is more crowded than the standing room section at a Hawks game. The students serve their detention during regular school hours. In other words, they miss their classes to serve out their detention and our taxes are paying for this. WTF! Jessie's PUSH and Obama's home are in 021. Stop by Dubar sometime guys and have a look. Surely you can CHANGE this. Shortshanks and Luberman won't. JFLED and Masters, Masters, Masters couldn't care less. They just drive by everyday to/from HQ. Very few, if any, parents are around/involved. 2170 says,
"Squad, let me have an event # for a premise check at Dunbar" and "Show me headin' down to Dunbar for they dismissal and send me 2174, 2112, and 2122." This is every f*cking school day. I couldn't make this sh*t up if I tried. Visit Dunbar or listen to Zone 5 and see/hear for this for yourself.

You are 100% correct about the teacher's union. I think it would be better for our society; kids in school, lower daycare costs, safe environment. But the odds of that happening with the union are slim to none.

Some "skool" districts are slowly moving to a four-day school week.

The municipalities claim it "saves money". Naturally they change the subject when the question of all these "unmonitored" young people are walking around because there's no one @ home. In most families, both parents work full-time jobs, and that doesn't address the astounding numbers of single-parent households that are evident in every community.

But the Teachers Union LOVES the idea...now teachers get a three-day weekend every week.

America is one of the few counties that STILL embraces the bullshit concept of three months off in the Summer.

The majority of states in the US still work off the 9-month schedule.

You think the CPD is backwards and inefficient? Open your eyes and look at your local schools.

All that ca$h, and where are the results?

When you visit your kids' school, notice how all the teachers have smiles on their faces.

That's because they know they have their hands in your pockets, and there isn't a fucking thing you're going to do about it.

While your point is well taken, please work on your WRITING and your spelling.

Teachers on the average start 90 minutes early to call missing parents and about johnny's failing grades. Then they work with a computer system that crashed daily. They put in 8 hours by 3pm. Massive amount of paperwork to CYA mentality. Remember, Huberman is the leader. Let them extend the school day with nonexistent computers and non-teachers in a school. Good Luck!

Underperforming teachers? So, following your example, if the crime rate is high then police are under performing? Take a long look at northwest side public schools then say under performing. Should we judge the entire CPD based on one who beat a bar tender? How many CPD are in a state prison? Do not throw stones you goof. The majority of teachers, police and fire work very hard in poor conditions and shit equipment and still accomplish the task at hand.

Hey, 6/05/2010 08:33:00 AM, Stop drinking the Progressive's Kool Aid. The entire system is designed to fail. Look at what has become of Detroit...we will be next. If things are just a little bit better in the Northwest side Public Schools, just remember that they're not even close to providing a good education as any Private schools in West or South side. Why do you think that most of us sacrifice so hard to send our children to Private schools?

The 'icing on the cake' of this entire exercise is that we pay for this corrupt system, out of our very high property taxes while our home values drop every month.

My fiance is on the CPD. I OFTEN post pro-police comments on newspaper blogs, as well as defend the job you do to people who don't necessarily agree. I'm also a very hard-working CPS teacher. I sort of thought we (CPD and CPS)were in the same boat....working with citizens who need, but not realize they need, our help and working for the same disgusting mayor. I never expected to see such bashing of CPS teachers here. Go ahead and make fun of me (I know many will), but I'm really disappointed to read some of the comments here.

By the way, June4, 9:58 am, I have NO idea where you got the "one hour off" a day. We receive a 20 minute break, in which we hope we can run to the bathroom and, if we're lucky, our contractual 40 minutes 4 times a week, to grade papers, call parents, plan lessons, etc.

Thanks for the support! (sarcasm is not limited to police officers)

Private schools focus on the above average students and those that are very good in sports. If you have a child with any sort of problem then you are out of luck. Riddle me this? Why are the neighborhood public schools on the northwest side growing while the private schools are declining in student numbers? The test scores are high and parents(city employees) are very involved in school activites. Same education for free. You pay a high price for living on the southwest side.
