Days Off Canceled?
Cha-ching!!! Right?
Well, not really:
This is without a doubt, the worst run event we've seen in years. If the mayor's Special Events people and the Department's Special Events Section paid even the tiniest amount of attention to the past three years, the Taste has been getting progressively worse, yet they aren't detailing nearly enough people to control the crowds. Now the proverbial shit is hitting the fan and the brass is in a panic, canceling days off and sending every warm body they can find to a detail that should be a matter of routine after 20-plus years.
Well, not really:
- FOP Contract Section 11.2 - Compensation for Holidays
Section C
Employees whose regular day off coincides with an established holiday, and who are required to work a regular tour of duty (eight hours) on that holiday, will be credited with twenty (20) hours compensatory time and four (4) hours of compensatory time or additional pay, as the officer elects.

What are you talking about? We've only had an Independence Day since 1776. Give it time to catch on.
It's not the worse managed TOC that we've seen. The 2008 Taste had to be the worst ever. Minimal, and I mean MINIMAL manpower, Assorted gunfire, a man killed, and let's not forget:
1) No squadrols
2) No prisoner vans
3) No arrest teams
4) No processing teams
5) No plainclothes teams working the crowds, removing the 'initiators' from the crowds before the event ends for the night. And you should have seen the look of J-Fled's face as he walked through the bedlam with his entourage of handlers; quite hilarious to see our fearful leader with a look of complete shock and bewilderment on his face.
Maybe the Mayor can find the money to hire some Andy Frains? Any port in a storm!
1700hrs 02JUL10, by the way, I'm going to need you to work this weekend.
The department is like the movie "Office Space"
How convenient that the order, that no one has a copy of, is released at 1700hrs. after all the FOP guys are gone for the weekend. If I didn't know better I'd say the FOP purposely wanted it done that way so they don't have to be bothered on their holiday weekend.
In all my years I have never seen this department so fucked up! The crew of imcompetent political bosses we have running the show are a disgrace. It's funny to see how often they recind and change orders. It's obvious they are lost. We now openly hear bosses in the districts and units laugh at 35th street and bad mouth the brass. Morale is imbedded in a place so low the adam bomb couldn't bring it out. The man responsible for this is our great dictator Mayor Daley. HIRE MORE POLICE OFFICERS!!! WE NEED THE HELP!
FOP - What happens if I am RDO and have to work over-time? Do I get time and a half, or double time and a half? - plus the 24 hours compensation.
It's time for shortshanks and the rest of the city to realize that the "Waste of Chicago" has become nothing short of a cesspool of crime.
Suck it up and get rid of this thing. They've already banned suburban vendors and it's the same crap every year - giant turkey leg, pizza, cheese cake, cherries & grapes, rainbow cone, etc.
The money spent on OT for the police just doesn't justify this bullshit event anymore. Bring back Venetian Night! At least people behaved with some class!
Gee, maybe the bosses can start planning for NEXT year, you know, PLAN AHEAD.... oh, wait... the bosses can't plan. They can't even lead. sorry! My bad...
I heard there is some sort of a blue-flu going around. The 24 hour kind. Just sayin' that's all.
God Bless the CPD and nobody else.
They switched rdos for specialized units. Whatever.
Yet the Southside Irish Parade was canceled because of public drunkeness. No stabbings, no gang fights, no fighting with the police, no "wildings"...
Gott dammit!!! The mother effen restaurants make enough money throughout the year. This event has become nothing but a major drain (and strain) on city resources. And for the last several years it has become a national media embarrassment.
Please, to the powers that be, either cancel the Despicable Taste or eliminate the "entertainment". There is no need to cater to anyone race or musical preference. It's called the Taste of Chicago for a reason. To taste the food that these restaurants provide, even though most serve the same dish.
poor planning by poor management. Gross's turn to be the scapegoat> its funny all they had to do is look at who was on the concert bill and look at his previous concerts and see the nonsense. wait to the 004th when south and north side goes up.
7/02/2010 10:28:00 AM
You mean Gross wasn't out there taking pictures with arrestees? I thought that was his specialty.
Keep working Tac!
The morons at 35th Street were calling the detective areas on Friday afternoon trying to figure out how to cancel days off. I'm RDO and not answering the phone.
If your RDO on the 4th and your called in, change of schedule does not count. Yes you will get the 20+4, but on your RDO you have no schedule, therefore no change of schedule. You cannot double up on premium pay.
What we want to know is if we are held past the 8 hour threshold, will it still be a 5-1 ratio of comp time to pay! I am dumbfounded as to how our union allowed this to happen and even further dumbfounded as to how an arbitrator would find this fair.
I've been to the the meetings.. It is the Mayor's Office of Special Events that calls the shots, civilians, and young ones at that!
They decide what the Police will do, and they decide the venue. Civilians are going to be the death of us on the job. They answer only to the Mayor. This debacle rests in the Mayor's lap.
Hire Executive Outcomes, they will show you how its done.

Wrong. The parade was cancelled exactly because of that. The CVS parking lot at 111th St and Western Ave was the site of two large gang fights in 2009, resulting in 2 guys with cracked skulls and several people sporting "hockey mouths" --missing teeth. The fight nearly caused a stampede which threatened several families watching the parade going by. Quick work by about 75 policemen prevented a stampede.
Also, the 5 suburban kids who attacked the police officers at the Metra tracks right next to the 022nd District. Felony charges approved. I also remember one gang banger from Midlothian, I think a Latin Saint, arrested for battery....just released two months before after doing eight years for murder. The drunks brought the gang bangers to the parade like moths to a porch light. It had to be ended at that point.
Its even worse, the city is already so short they cannot answer normal calls for service, they have now stripped districts and units and cancelled days off.
Even the airport, which is less that 50% of what it should be is being strippped for this mega distaster in the making.
Also, firemen are also being called up, whats really going on????
relax... word is that they are bringing back Andy the Clown from old white sox park to entertain the exiting crowd tonight. also he will be pushing a beer cart for the thirsty texting suburban citizens. all is well.
Taste of Chicago? Then maybe they should be serving plates of blood and guts with a little brain matter for some seasoning. That would be a little more realistic, examplifying all the violence in the city. If I want to go to a restaurant, I'll pick up a copy of Chicago magazine or watch some good reviews featured on Hungry Hound of the restaurant I think I would like. I'll be damned if I take the family and friends to an event where my chances of getting battered are even higher these days with the police undermanned. Do I really need to go to a taste? Stupid humans.
If your RDO is cancelled are you gaurenteed 8 Hrd your normal tour? If so and you work a 9 or 10 Hour day are you gaurenteed that?
Privatization at it's best!
I can't wait till the office of special events is privatized.
Megan McDonald is an idiot. A ten year old kid would make better decisions than her.
Nice that they fuck-up your holiday event plans, giving you time due that you can't take.
Our unit is so short that orders from 35th to "limit" CE time are SOP.

TRY READING THE CONTRACT YOURSELF DUMB ASS!!!!!
Just dont answer the phone. Take what they give you later on, but dont fill-up the man power shortage by coming in on your RDO. Screw this city and the bosses that defend it!
The only thing better than knowing I only have 3 years left in this shithole is being able to get a 7a furlough through the end!
Recinded call at 1030 hrs. WTB some decision making.

Thew city didn't cancel the southside parade. The citizens of mt greenwood realized it was out of control and shut it down themselves. So everybodies argument that the city shut doun the southside parade but no the other ethnic parades is totally false.
"Waste of Chicago" LOL I LOVE IT!!!!!
Thanks Brother.
Be safe down there, don't eat the carp and watch your partner's back.
do we really need these fests? PR fest? taste of bodyodor? the pols like to have their people '' let their hair down and enjoy themselves'' at taxpayers expense. let all the organizers and vendors foot the bill! how about putting all the pols in dunktanks at these festivals? our money problems would be over at a buck a throw. maybe fill the dunktanks with.....too.

What the hell is an "adam bomb"?
the best part is after everybody had to cancel plans with their family at the very last minute, the city has the right to send you home after 4 hours of a tour that you were forced to work. i am signing up for stress management first thing monday! tuesday i will be on the medical.
day off canceled has be canceled for some units. either nobody knows whats going on or someone told shortshanks how much it was going to cost and he canceled the day off canceled order.
move along people, there is nothing to see here...
SOOOOOO now the cancelled RDOs are cancelled??? Why can't the fools make up their minds or think things through PRIOR to sending out these orders......The real funny thing is that if you were scheduled to work and you had put in a DOH request, it would be honored over someone's RDO cancellation!!! So, I do need the day off but I didn't put in a DOH slip BECAUSE I am RDO, now I have to work the holiday and the scheduled officer doesn't????? What a joke
The Taste should be almost automatic on its preparation and operation over the years. Ten years ago the police even had fun while working the taste and the boss would have a trailer with beer for the boys in blue. The good old days , gone forever
Maybe if they promoted someone with experience--oh wait a minute, there's no one left--they got rid of them all....What an embarrasment.
I'm going to put a slip in for when they called me to cancel my RDO!!!! it's company business bitches and that phone call was 10 minutes, I made sure of that.
What is the FOP Unit Rep's job if not to tell the rank and file of the fact that our holiday OT was reduced to comp time only? Why are they receiving a reduced union dues payment if they aren't able to let us know what the flop is giving up for us? I'm pretty pissed about this. I think we need to expect more out of these folks or vote them off as reps. What the f--k else did we give up that we will only find out AFTER the contract is settled?
I can't see it as a coincidence that FOP negotiated our OT as comp time at a time the city has stated they would not be hiring and the dept. needs us to work extra on our days off to cover the shortage. Man they suck.

You are absolutely right. Vote me out as rep. Please vote me out as rep. I want to be voted out as rep. Because that would be the only way I would know that many officers in my district have a pulse and are paying attention.
So please vote me out and run for the office yourself. I promise to support you and if I am in your district I will vote for you. Honest. So help me God.
Then you can get the dues rebate of approx. $430 a year, paid yearly in December, and let me know how much shit you will take for that $35 a month.
Last time I checked there was no one lining up for those jobs. Glad to hear you want to get involved. I applaud your willingness to serve.
Do it.

Uh, that section, 11.2, is in the LAST contract too, the one that ran from 2003 - 2007. But you knew that, right? You read that contract, right? It expired three years ago and ran for four years before that. You do read your own contract, right? Or did your unit rep not sit down and read the contract to you while holding your hand and feeding you cookies and warm milk. Tell me, who wipes your ass? Do you expect someone in the FOP to do that also?
Here's another shocking surprise: that same exact section, in those exact words, are in the contract previous to 2003 - 2007, you know, the one that ran from 1999 - 2003.
Now don't tell me you didn't read that contract either? And your Unit Rep probably didn't read that one to you as well. Damn.
So let me summarize, you by your admission have not read your own contract since at least 1999 because if you did you would know that the passage you object so strenuously to was in the contract since at least 1999, eleven years ago.
And no one told you and no one read it to you. Damn shame.
That exact same provision is in three consecutive contracts and you and many others are totally shocked to find out it is in the contract.
Here's a news flash, read your own contract once in a while. You will be amazed what you might learn.
Then run for Unit Rep so you can hold contract reading seminars for all your reading challenged co-workers.
One more thing, I can guarantee you that boxes containing hundreds of copies of each contract signed during your career have been sent to your district. There has been one for you in those boxes too. If you misplaced it the current and past contracts are online. Or, you could get a hard copy at the FOP Hall. You know where that is, right?
What the hell is an "adam bomb"?

It is from the same school of higher learning that produces gems like "rod iron" instead of wrought iron and other similar public displays of ignorance.

What can I say but that you're right. I have not read the completed contract cover to cover. I realize I need to do that. The issue still is that many officers don't read it all. Should we? Yes. But when there are significant changes I guess I would like my unit rep to have a contract proposal "seminar" BEFORE the shit gets enacted. At least we can voice our opinion. It's only important to discuss it with us when it's being negotiated. We hardly get a chance to say much when it comes to major changes. Sure we can read about all we have given up after the contract is ratified but I still think the unit rep should give us a laundry list of issues that concern us. That sounds unreasonable to you? I'll take your advice and run for rep myself. I WILL let others know what ALL is on the negotiating table because you know what - ALOT of cops didn't know and it being there for a while is even more reason that it wouldn't hurt to inform. Thanks anyway.

The FOP tried very hard to negotiate the past three contracts. The city does not negotiate in good faith. All three went before an arbitrator. We are stuck with whatever we get then.
For an established contract issue to be changed by the arbitrator, if the parties do not agree, the burden the arbitrator uses is that one or the other of the parties must show that the issue/contract section etc. is broken and needs changing. Lacking meeting that burden the arbitrator will leave that issue in contention alone.
Several months before contract expiration members have a chance to voice their opinions about what issues to include before negotiations start. Very few ever responds to these requests for input. Same with requests for input on judge's retention.
I will post an exact meaning on the day off holiday canceled thing as soon as I get an old timekeeper's opinion and after I talk to someone in the office, Tuesday at the earliest.
The main thing is, I believe nothing has changed on that regard for several contracts.

"Gee, maybe the bosses can start planning for NEXT year, you know, PLAN AHEAD.... oh, wait... the bosses can't plan. They can't even lead. sorry!"
If J-Fled remains at the helm, we may have an entirely different cluster of clowns at the top next year!
They'll suffer from the same leadership-defecit as these clowns, though!

Man, there's a blast from the past.
