Dismantling a Champion

Not unexpected due to salary cap restrictions but still, painful to watch.
  • There's a price for winning and having players who perform exceptionally well. For Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman, that means clearing salary-cap room for the roughly $4 million in bonus overages.

[...] Bowman traded restricted free agent Andrew Ladd to the Atlanta Thrashers on Thursday -- the opening day of free agency -- for defenseman Ivan Vishnevskiy and a second-round pick in 2011 and watched unrestricted free agent and popular agitator Adam Burish sign with the Dallas Stars.

The trade came less than 24 hours after Bowman sent Kris Versteeg to the Toronto Maple Leafs and a week after he traded Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel and Ben Eager to the Thrashers and Colin Fraser to the Edmonton Oilers.

Hopefully, it isn't another 49 years for the next Stanley Cup.

The Bears did the same thing after they won the Super Bowl and you see what happened.

got to dump hulet. cant pay $$$ for a bad backup goalie.campbell is also overpaid too. hawks have a great core of guys still. they had great chemistry and character guys. the third and forth line guys are gonna have to fill the void. its tough to repeat in hockey...alot of very good teams evenly matched.

Jeez, maybe Mr Ricketts will dismantle the pathetic Cubs. Ship out all these high paid studs hitting .188 and fill the roster with hungry young players from AAA.

Florida Marlins won 2 world Series that way.

Cubs have won diddly paying hundreds of millions to washed up orthopedic cases & nut jobs.

That's it, DISMANTLE THE CUBS!

A lot of this is due to Dale Tallon's poor managerial experience. HE has a great eye for talent but over paid or over spent for some of the players we have. God love him because he brought us the Stanley Cup, but Scotty Bowman has a big job in front of him, not just this year but the next couple. So far it looks like he will be able to hold the core together. Biggest losses will be Buf and Madden. The NHL salary cap is hard. No luxury tax. No playing games like the NBA. You can't just cut people like football. Oh, and all the award money counts for the Conn-Smyth etc. counts as well. Trust management they will do ok by us but don't blame Scotty. Bowman

For all those who wonder why Dale Tallon was fired, now you know. With a hard salary cap, your GM has to be a good numbers guy. And you can't sign bad contracts - like Huet and Campbell. Unless they can find a taker, Huet will be paid $5.6MM to play for the Rockford Ice Hogs.

Let's just hope Stan Bowman has a clue what he's doing. If he does, he has stockpiled a bunch of young talent and prospects that will keep our Hawks in the hunt for years.

If not? Well, we blew our load this year and it'll be another half a century till the next Cup. If the "core players" aren't able to win, maybe Dale Tallon can come back and restock the club?

There are too many teams in the NHL and they need to get rid of the salary cap. The salary cap only benefits teams like Phoenix, Tampa, Florida Panthers and the many other teams like them that don't draw fans. Like I said way too many teams in the NHL.

the bowmans couldn't get the league to raise the cap so some people had to go--- when are they going to dump huet--- he is costing us a fortune--- niemi is your guy and have crawford back him up... none of these trades is a suprise--- they were all on the bubble--- it would have been nice if they could have kept ladd though--- he is good and will be missed...
