Food Fest Attendance Up!

  • Attendance at Milwaukee's Summerfest rose 2.5 percent this year, aided by a long stretch of rain-free weather.

Summerfest is an 11-day lakefront music event that bills itself as the world's largest music festival. It wrapped up last Sunday.

Milwaukee World Festival Inc. is the company that stages the event. It says this year's attendance was 856,000, up from about 835,000 last year.
Did we mention it's a "pay event"? Why does that matter?
  • About 700,000 fewer people attended this year’s Taste of Chicago food festival on the city lakefront and city officials say it’s likely because the annual July 3 Grant Park fireworks were canceled.

Last year 3.35 million people attended the festival and this year attendance was 2.65 million.
And that's for a FREE event.

Over the weekend, Taste of Park Ridge did much better this year than last. And no problems from texting suburbanites......

Why would shitheads pay entry to a festival when they have no intention of eating or listening to music? Ohhhhh... I get it now.

My family went to Milwaukee this year, no homeless, no savage. Just families

Milwaukee is not that far away.

So what does that tell ya? They should charge. I'd pay not to have to rub shoulders with garbage.

I know I would rather pay a fee and know that my family and I would be safe. They couldn't pay me to go to Chicago's Summerfest. I never hear about problems at Napervile's Rib Fest.

The fire works had squat to do with attendance.

something to note - the Summerfest numbers are real - they come from ticket sales and gate turnstiles - they are accurate. The Taste of Chicago numbers are fantasy, pie in the sky, pulled from some place the sun don't shine by cronies of Daley. There is NO way 2,650,000 people went to Taste this year, NO way that 3,350,000 went last year.

The fireworks had nothing to do with the lower attendance. People stayed away because they feared for their safety and that of their families.

Obviously the fireworks change cut attendance at Taste (why would you even doubt that?). The more interesting question is whether the same amount of money was spent. Since half the 4th crowd is savages who don't pay for anything anyway, the $$$ take might be a wash.

I haven't been to the taste of Chicago in ten years. I go to summer fest every year. It cost me $3 to park on the street. No traffic congestion. And for the 7 hours I was there. I saw about 10 po's the wholetime. Very clean , very reasonable price for what you get. Easy access to all the great bands playing. I'll drive the 90 mintues anytime.

I heard the suburban people were going to boycott it this year because King Richard said no suburban restaurants allowed. Did they indeed boycott it, and if they did, was it effective?

I know Milwaukee isn't the safest city in America, but compared to Chicago it was much cleaner, and all around nicer. The public market up there had great food, and if you're up that way, take a tour of the Sprecher brewery! It was a great tour!

That being said, I've never been to the taste, I'm not one for crowds or putting my life in danger...

Why wouldn't they charge admission?
I'm amazed they haven't yet. All the city does is cry poor. The reverends can cry racism all they want and the city has the perfect excuse.

Besides the lower number of food tents this year (thanks to Shortshanks rule that no outside-of-chicago restaurants can have tents at the Taste) and risk of roving shitheads, the bands this year at the Taste were terrible. It's a matter of opinion I suppose, but there were more bands and better bands in a a few days at Milwaukee than the whole Taste festival.

I went up to Milwaukee for Summerfest and had a great time. The crowd was well behaved and civilized. My only gripe was the traffic was gridlocked after the Rush concert and the shuttle buses weren't air conditioned. It was reminiscent of being in a cattle car....or one of Chicago's buses without A/C.

Anyway getting off the bus due to the traffic....no one was concerned about getting jumped or shot like we would be in Chicago.

Wasnt it the Mayor of Milwaukee who had his ass kicked in the parking lot of the Milwaukee Fest last year? Yes, it was on this here blog, on t.v and in the papers. I was at the Milwaukee Fest and the animal was there too! Walking out to leave and I was feeling like I was Back in the courtyards of the Robert Taylor home on a hot friday night. Its not always better there. Just dont stay late, leave early and you'll probably be fine!

But we do pay something to attend the Taste, each strip of tickets has a buck or so of "convenience" fees. And how many strips does your average paying customer use? Probably enough to equal the fee to get in Summerfest.

Milwaukee Fest/ Summer Fest is the largest musical festival in the country.

It is clean, beautiful views, no SAVAGES, good food and reasonable prices.

FUCK CHICAGO!

90 minutes and you are in Heaven. I have even taken Amtrak up there, so no 501 issues. The only hangup is that if you plan on staying in Milwaukee you need to book your room way in advance, they go quick.

I don't know how many remember, but prior to taste of Chicago there was Chicago Fest. It was held at the old Navy Pier and admission was charged. Entertainment was great and I don't remember any problems with any of the local shitheads.

The fest subsequently moved to Soldier Field but it was never as good as Navy Pier and was short lived.

the city could use old Megs Feild as a fest grouds, secure it and charge admission. But, that would make sense...

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was injured outside the Wisconsin State Fair (NOT Summerfest) in suburban West Allis last summer.

Without bodyguards, the mayor intervened in a dispute. The offender broke the mayor's hand with a tire iron.

Milwaukee has learned not to make the same mistakes that Chicago has/keeps making. Also, look for Orlando to take more of our conventions and the revenue they generate...the city is cleaner, less congested, and way cheaper...and did I mentioned the efficiency of their airport!!

Heard that Taste of Shit-cago was a flop, and that many Vendors won't return next year. Opting for Suburban Fests instead.
