Speedy recovery to the officer, physically and emotionally. After reading several posts over the last few hours, and considering another attempt on an officer's life, I would agree that a march is in order. Some pressing issues that popped up throughout the comments seemed to be equipment/vehicles, training and staffing with a couple comments on lateral hiring or hiring within city(CFD, streets dept., teachers etc)or a combination of both to supplement the regular process which is too long to make any kind of dent in the current manpower shortage anytime soon. God help the CPD.

The disregard for the safety and the lack of respect for human life shown by this mayor and so called CPD leaders, media and community leaders is perhaps more appalling than that which the savage displays. Thats why they're the animal-savage, scum. What's your excuse mr. mayer, et al?

we lost a great man to one pos yesterday and, today another pos tries to kill an officer with his car(nice of the media to mention that the officer was hit by the car before the s/h was hit by the bullet.) these worthless excuses for human beings need to understand that they can spill each others blood til hell freezes over -but spillin POLICE blood will not be tolerated as just be some footnote in the media's coverage.

SINCERE WISHES FOR A SPEEDY RECOVERY TO THE INJURED PO (BUT BE SURE YU GET THE REST OF THE SUMMER TO SPEND WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS).HOPE THE PARTNER IS OK.

GOD BLESS THE CPD,ITS FAMILIES,
FRIENDS,AND THOSE DECENT CITIZENS CAUGHT IN THE HELL THEY DIDN'T CREATE BUT CAN'T ESCAPE.

STAY EXTRA SAFE,GO HOME TO YOUR FAMILY AND SIGNIFICANT OTHERS AT THE END OF YOUR TOUR FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS. THANK GOD FOR THEM IN YOUR LIFE BECAUSE THEY ARE THANKING GOD FOR YOU RIGHT NOW.-

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THOSE FANTASTIC PEOPLE AT ST. MICHAEL'S HOUSE AND THE CHAPLAINS MINISTRY-THEY ARE ACCUSTOMED TO DEALING WITH POs IN TIME OF CRISIS AND DISPAIR.UNFORTUNATELY, THEY HAVE HAD LOTS OF PRACTISE LATELY.

PLEASE DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE--OUR LOSSES ARE ALREADY TOO NUMEROUS.

RIP OFFICER SODERBERG--YOU WERE TAKEN TOO SOON BUT NOT BEFORE YOU LEFT YOUR MARK ON MANY.

Don't hesitate to use deadly force. Don't bring a taser to a gun fight.

Nice work, Office. Get well soon!

Check out Channel 7 coverage of the incident. Dude sees EVERYTHING when police shoot somebody; on the other hand, as we all know, when Joe shoots Joe nobody sees nuttin'.

Mr superintendent , how do you sleep , when you have officers assigned as 1 man units , 3 - 5 down cars in 11th district , wagons working double duty assigned as a beat car .

when will you assign all the full duty house cats from every district, unit back to a beat car?

let district managers run districts and have sworn exempts assigned bak to street duties

we need some help in the field , not the caps office etc.

You have less than a year left to gain the respect of CPD blue shirts

remember Don't respond to any disturbance , burglar alarm , in progress call without a Back Up

wait for your back up , go home to your family safe

A big thank you to the Chicago Fire Department. They were very helpful at the scene and with the procession to the morgue. One example they had the fire helicopter over the scene. They were able to block news helicopters from filming the officer's body on the ground. CFD also assisted at the crime scene. It is appreciated by those at the crime scene.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Justice's civil rights division will investigate a white Oakland police officer accused of killing an unarmed black man on a crowded train platform, a case reminiscent of the racially charged 1992 police beating of Rodney King.

He sleeps well because he makes over 300 k a year. He can afford the best of bedroom furniture.

Stop crying about manpower. Look how many PO's abuse the medical, or never come to work, or extend their furloughs and cu and shortchange the watch. Weis screwed up but police help the process along. Police are their own worst enemies.

The group of Peer Support grief counselors that were sent to the Academy need some retraining. They mishandled and mucked-up the entire process. Love it when someone tells you how you should feel - that is not a good grief counselor.
They department would have been better served by having the department chaplains handle the grief counseling at the Academy on Thursday.

Lateral Hiring makes perfect sense. There have been many coppers laid off this past year due to suburban down-sizing. You can lateral on any department other CPD, ISP and CCSD. Even ISP will hie lateral you just have an abbreviated course. Create a 6 week course that deals with City ordinance and basic patrol procedures (radio, reports,etc...) You can put at least 100 already trained P.O's on the street every 6 weeks!

Way too long that the courts do not keep known offenders off the streets. When will the courts be held responsible??? The Police bring them in, the courts let them out. It is time for citizens to demand responsibility and accountability from those in charge. Murder and the grief from it is too much to bear. May Officer Thor Soderberg, and all those before him, rest in peace. God help us all.

Mr. Weis, if you truly want us to take back the streets get the city to indemnify us in civil proceedings. i can stand the heat that the assholes at IPRA want to bring. i know how to justify my actions and those with whom I work. And, if I do something criminal I will man up and take my punishment. That will have been brought on by my own stupidity. What I can not, will not accept is some worthless piece of shit taking my money, my children's college fund, my life savings because of trumped up charges concocted by the likes of Loevy n Loevy swallowed by gullible Federal juries who think that we are the bad guys.
I have been on this job for a quarter of a century, protecting this city from the animals who have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Until you protect us Mr. Weis, I will only protect my family and my brother officers. I encourage every officer out there to do the same. I personally know 5 officers who in the past 24 months have been told by our Corporation Counsel to pay out $10,000 -$20,000 each. They were doing their job. I have worked too hard and too long for what I have to lose it in the ghetto lottery. ASk any boss that you respect for his/her opinion on this. You will be shocked

This is pure BS! At least Peer Support came out to assist you...where was WIESel/Masters?
Peterson? Jackson? Cuello? Brown?
Did any of them stop by and speak to any of you? And what about Shortshanks himself? Did he cut his trip short from Idaho to offer support to anybody? Those Peer Support people do an excellent job. If you didn't like what they did, go see your clergyman at your place of worship, and deal with your grief (if you have any) that way. You've got options. But don't bust out people here who came out to help. My God, what a bunch of ungrateful whiners we have become!

I don't have a problem with anyone extending their furlough, as long as the time on the books is there!
That's what the time is there for!
But this medical abuse...We have a fat ass in 024 mids who was gone for 9 months, came back for two weeks last December, claimed he hurt his back, and hasn't returned to work since...a true "professional medical roll abuser." But you can catch him riding his Harley all over town and in the burbs, trying his best to look like ZZ Top! A bum with a badge, that's what we call him here.

This should come as no surprise. All of us in each department refer to it as... Tradition.

That's why we look out for each other.
As Chicago's first responders we can all appreciate the work we do...collectively.

While there's always some intramural good-natured kidding, when the going gets tough... well you know the rest.
When we lose one of our own there is no black or white, we just bleed red or blue, that's all.
Remember those "First-Responders" on '911?' They ALL gave of themselves to help others.
That's what WE do.
That's why it's important to never lose sight of our 'brotherhood' of police/fire first responders.
We all sit in the same 'foxhole' depending upon and willing to sacrifice for one another.
Please don't misinterpret this reply, I understood that your post was in gratitude for the brotherhood of our Fire Dept. brothers and sisters.
My intent was only to reinforce that word... BROTHERHOOD.
