How Safe is Your Station?

  • ...Weis responded Friday to questions about whether there was enough security at the building.

Asked about what could be done about security at police parking lots, Weis said police facilities have video surveillance but added that little could be done to prevent such attacks by people with little regard for human life.

"There's really no level of security you can put up that will prevent a person like that from attacking someone," he said.
Yeah, like video cameras have ever secured anything. Our readers respond:
  • really, let's go to the FBI Chicago field office on Roosevelt and see if you can get into their parking lot with a ladder or grappling hook. aint going to happen. They have gates, turnstiles, armed guards and ...wait for it...

A SECURE F'KIN COVERED GARAGE ACCESSIBLE ONLY BY VETTED EMPLOYEES

  • Go to any suburban police department and try to trespass around their facilities like the shitbirds do around ours.

Or perhaps go to the FBI facility at 2111 W. Roosevelt Road in Chicago and try to get in.

Or any police facility around here, except ours. and try to tresspass.
Obviously, we aren't going to publish exactly how to access our woefully pathetic security measures. But vague generalizations demonstrating how un-secure District stations are would be an eye opener to many. Maybe it even gets General Services interested in fixing a few more doors and leaky ceilings.

I won't say which station I work at, but it doesn't have video surveillance. Neither do the last 2 places I was assigned. J-Fled might not know, since he doesn't know much about the Department outside his and Masters' offices...but I really would like to know, is he lying or is he really that dumb?

It's positively absurd that any vagrant, hobo, n'er-do-well or bum is allowed to traipse as he pleases through installation areas of the Chicago PD. For a billion reasons, this makes no sense. As has already been pointed out, this sort of horseshit is not permitted by other cities.

The station houses should have one single point for public ingress and egress. All other areas frequented by officers should be secured with fences and however many armed men is appropriate. We have a dead police officer- and by all accounts, one helluva man- who stands as a sad, silent reminder that this "who cares" methodology of securing Chicago's station houses is wrong.

The policemen of Chicago are our warriors against criminals. They will make enemies through the course of their work. To leave them unprotected and vulnerable to this sort of thing is just disgusting.

This needs to be fixed, now. Not a bunch of pointless study groups or white-papers, no theory sessions, no political wrangling, no bluster or empty hot air. Get shovels digging and fresh procedures drafted, right fucking now.

Mayor Daley and the administrators of the Chicago PD, you fail.

About 25 years ago I visited a police station on Phoenix, Az.

You walked into a public area that was sealed off like a currency exchange. From behind bullet-proof glass you were asked what your business was. I was there to see a PO. I was told to wait and when he was available he escorted me through a buzzed door into a secure area.

PO's could only access facilities that they were assigned to.

Our facilities were designed with no security in mind. To build secure structures you need quality construction, so that explains that.

First of all, get the community rooms out of the police stations. No matter how warm that makes you feel with the public, the fact that they are on police property with department permission means the department is responsible for their safety.

The structures and perimeters need to be hardened.

We have been lucky so far.

We have said this since day one when this new type of station started being built.

We call them ALAMO MODERN, designed as a mission, not as a fortress. Lots of open public area, lots of glass, no way to secure parking lots. The security systems like CCTV that never worked. A couple of armed gangbangers can come in and take over the place and pull a jail break, no problem.

We know what happened to the first Alamo.

Fallen Officer Valadez had a street named after him today. An "Honorary Street," but nonetheless still a nice tribute. SCC, this begs a question that maybe you could address. When is the last time this city actually renamed a street for a fallen Chicago Police officer? With all the streets in Chicago named after 100 year old denizens of Chicago's past, why can't the City of Chicago actually "rename" a street for a fallen Chicago Police Officer? Or at least rename one street to collectively honor the true heroes of the City's past.

Or maybe he meant to say there's no level of security that Chicago politicians would be willing to install or endorse to protect our officers. We can't piss off the revrunds and all the democrat leaning voters by appearing to care about the police now can we?

Google Image search Ireland police stations. They look like maximum security prisons. Yeah forehead, there's just no level of security to protect an Officer.

I was there when they pulled Officer Soderberg off the ambulance at the ME's office. Don't insult my intelligence, dishonor a fallen Officer and disrespect the rest of the Officers who risk their lives everyday.

The most important thing to remember is this wouldn't have happened had Thor had a locker available to him in the old 007th dist!!!!! How many people have a locker at TRU???? The answer is very few!!

The security is woeful at best at all of our stations but places like 013, 012, and the old 007 are the worst. The areas are a close second. Think of how vulnerable the desk crew is at Chicago Police Facility. The areas have two access doors and that doesn't include other doors should somebody sneak in.

I have never been to a suburban station that has direct access for the public. The Mayor should remember that Police officers are hated by many for no reason. Government itself is hated by many. The Police are the easiest target to access for a nutjob!

Seriously the building is a police station not a public restroom for the masses. It's just not safe letting people come in like that And I don't think it should be allowed. Oh but I forgot, we don't want to be seen in a negative light no matter what.

Watch for Georgas to go to A/3 as Dep Chief, (Rottner had residency issues), and Ryan to go to Capt in 008.

All new stations (such as 010) where one person is allowed to work the desk, they sit there taking reports from lines of shady citizens & illegal aliens all day. They are not able to safely and effectively monitor who comes in & out of the stations lobby.
Maybe Caps or the commanders office should post their worthless and hidden EXTRA PO's in the lobby at the door where they can at least help secure and protect the working PO's who unfortunately don't have eyes on the backs of their heads.

Security measures at our police stations would only be installed after shanks takes his blinders off, quits ignoring the obvious and admits there are less than desireable people roaming around in his sanctuary city that can only be controlled by physical and tangible barriers. Until then, everything will remain wide open, unlike facilities at federal government locations and suburban police departments.

Plus, Maggie would have to approve the design of same, after it is offered by a Daley-connected family member, so nothing clashes with the center-divider flower enclosures and other phony baloney window dressing that is used to confuse the tax-paying public and have them believe there are no problems here in lovely Chicago.

Improve security?

Never gonna happen, at least while Shortshanks is still around. That would mean spending money and unless you have a Daley family member or friend on the receiving end no improvements will be made.

However......we could work with what we have.

Take a certain North Side District for example. The rear door to this facility is for all intensive purposes secured with a locked door that requires a code to be punched in.

Unfortunately, that code has been given out to numerous non-sworn personnel.

One example would be the senior group that meets at this facility. These people are allowed to park in our lot and enter through the secured rear door. Instead of someone from the senior office meeting them at the door, they given this group the security code to gain admittance.

Then there is the family member of a certain 2nd watch desk Sgt who was recently seen using the same door.

But hey! What does it all matter when you have out side civilian dressed personnel throwing hissy fits when you ask them to see some I.D. before you let them in?

My point is until we start using what security measures we have, getting new and better ones won't make a difference.

Regarding newer stations. What a piss poor safety design!!! How about those giant windows that expose the desk personnel to the public? Easy to take a shot through one of those. Especially at night, the glare from the lights inside block any view from the desk area to the outside. I had the experience of seeing this 1st hand when I was getting a report approved. My partner was trying to signal me as I was looking in his direction while he was outside. He was pissed that I didn't acknowledge him. I told him I couldn't see him standing there. I was able to see passing vehicles due to their lights. It scared the shit out of me when I realized how easy it would be for some nut to stand there and take aim. I very much doubt those windows are bullet proof or at least bullet resistant. Remember---"LOWEST BIDDER"---gets the contract.

010 is a horrible set up. Shit birds walking to and from from sawyer, talking shit if you're going in with a head. Simple solution, make the east lot for police personel only. Install a gate with key card access, leave the first couple of rows for the dc, wc, tac lt, etc (everyone that wants to feel important enough to have a reserved spot). Next, the closer spots should be for police cars only(you hear this fto JL)! Then towards the rear we can leave the cars we're towing, and that solves the problem of joe gangbangers friend coming with an extra set of keys to take the car. Civilians can then park in the smaller west lot.

How many cars waiting to be towed/impounded have been stolen from the lot of a certain west side district (or probably ANY district for that matter)? Not a video camera to be found in the lot for POs cars or the lots for squad cars. One thing to point out though...the Area garage has a giant fence around the lot, which makes sense. We wouldn't want anyone stealing the squad cars that don't work.

Saw a guy get locked up in December for trespass to the lot in area 2. He had been living in one of the damaged unmarked cars in the back for 2 weeks before he was discovered this time. Told the arresting officers that he had been doing it for the past 15 years during the winter time for his safety. What about our safety. 15 seconds in the lot is too long for a civilian to be back there unsupervised.

After bonding out, these pieces of shit: thieves, burglars, gang bangers, etc., were letting out from the back of the building (celliport)and were free to roam around the POLICE parking lot where we park our personal and Department vehicles.
And also, regular citizens were allowed to cut off to our Police station lot to wherever they're going to. Someone told me it's community relations ,but, I call it BULLSHIT. The Department won't do anything unless some fucking terrorist plant a (or a few) bomb in our vehicles or police building and blow up the whole station. This is a VERY SERIOUS security concerns especially on midnights where no one sees what's going on at the parking lot.

any who posts a comment on this subject crying about the lack of security at the stations better damn sure have locked someone up for violating the station boundries in the first place. I agree that all police facilities are a joke, including HQ -- the guy sitting at the front desk could take one just as quick as the guy in the district.

I for one have locked up several people at Police facilities, from the shit head cutting through the lot to the disrespectful yuppie doing the same, or the ones that acted like asholes once inside the front door.

Last time I checked, those are our "houses" and I have protected mine. So to those complaining, try locking somebody up in 017, or tell the people "no public restrooms" in 021, or stop using each station as a warming/cooling center. And if the effort needed to effect an arrest is too much, write an ANOV or just keep your mouth shut.

Whereas in the suburbs, there is nowhere to loiter, sit and lolly gag. If your ass isn't on official business you either get out or get locked the fuck up. No lobby/front desk access, a small waiting area with no seating and LOTS of bullet-proof glass. P.O. parking is separate, secured, shielded and patrolled.

None of this liberal bullshit about Police stations being cooling/warming/community centers and dormitories for people awaiting pick by community services.

Don't get us started about federal facilities. If you're not on authorized business you will surely get locked up on federal trespass charges and if you fuck around too hard your likelihood of dying where you stand is very good indeed.

J-fled is drunk, high, full of shit and a liar... CPD facilities aren't secure the WAY THEY NEED TO BE BECAUSE SOMEBODY "IM-POTANT" will get their nose out of joint for not having easy access to get on the D.C./coppers nerves with nonsense or have a bull-donkey shit "community event" on the premises.

Restricted access... guard shacks with tire-busters & video for no cutting through the parking lot.

Police Stations should be unfriendly and forbidding places...

For everything else, rent a fucking hall!

I am a retired CPD and have the occasion to visit police facilities around the country in my current job. Never have I seen police facilities as open as they are in Chicago, never, not in a small town or in another big city. You are correct when you do not want to say too much on this blog, but it is a shame and sign of how litle the administration thinks of you and how imcompetent your leadership is and has been. The now retired deputy supt. ( who went on to another careet as Stroger's aid, was primarily responsible for designing these new, way too open and waste of space stations. I moved into the 006 when it was new and it was a diaster. I really wonder why the FOP cannot do something about this either through a safety grievance or a public relations move. Go out to LA someday and try to get into one of their police facilities or parking lots and see how far you get. I cannot say anything about NY, never been to their bldgs.

For the Superintendent of Police to make such a stupid and ill informed comment shows that either he really does not know what is going on, he does not care or he is afraid of saying something that the Mayor does not like. I have called for an independent security professional to make an evaluation of each police bldg and parking lot in the past, not some secret service of FBI agent who does not know jack about the security industry, but a private sector professional. It might be worth it for the FOP to hire such an individual and take him on a covert security evaluation of a couple of the bldgs and publish his report . That might open a few eyes!! and embarass the city into doing somnething. The press just eats up the mayors and J-Fleds bullshit and never investigates for themselves. Maybe the Reader would publish such a report along with photos? They do more good work then anyone else in this town.I am so glad I am retired and so sorry for those who have to continue to endure the travesty that Daley and the reverands have created.

The Dept.'s answer was to move all the squad cars across Kedzie, and put up the blue wodden barriers along Harrison St. I'm sure those abarriers would prevent an RPG fired from across the Eisenhower Xpy from hitting the building. They didn't have the sense to realize the metal squad cars formed some level of protection against an attack. But no, they put up the wooden "POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS" horses. I guess the fact that nobody carried out that particular threat was foiled by the wooden boards. Yea right.

If we had a top-notch super he/she would demand that each and every station is protected, not only by fences, but guards....just the 35th street. Thor would be alive today if there were more hires and not the "band-aid" solutions they have in place. RIP my friend.

Why doesn't someone ask Roti about p.o.'s being forced to park their "personal" vehicles in that highly secured west lot of Homan Square, or better yet right there on the street, and then walk alone about a block to the entrance

...that set up is terrible. That lot should be guarded if anything like the take-homes and UC cars across the street.

Did anyone else see J-FLED and the gun registration sergeant on the news today in regards to handgun registration? They were like dumb and dumber deers caught in the headlights. What a joke. Why did they even bother? Neither knew the answers to the media's questions about handgun registration and neither could even credibly punt. What a joke. There is a rumor going around that the honest joe citizen believes since Chicago has this new gun ban lifted, they can bring the guns out in public to the police stations to register them. There is a STRONG rumor that Downtown EB is none too happy with both Georgas and Ryan. The grudge with Georgas goes back a while but Ryan has to do with security (or lack of) at the TRU building.
Watch for Georgas to go to A/3 as Dep Chief, (Rottner had residency issues), and Ryan to go to Capt in 008.
Alexander will take Georgas spot and the new commander of TRU will be the the old commander of TRU. (Sorry Eli not you) it will be none other than TW from 008.
You heard it here first!!

Ryan is a Lt. by Career Service so he won't be a Captain, it wouldn't surprise me if EB tries something similar, so he can get rid of more white bosses, so let's see, moving Dana lateral to SF would be a reward for what? as Commander of 004 and as D/C of A2 he's done what to combat the out-of-control violence down there? and bring back TW? now that would be a joke, that guy was so in over his head it was laughable.. nothing would surprise me.

I think Ryan picked up the second bar shortly before he was promoted to Commander.

Ryan was dealt a shitty hand more than a few times; thankfully nothing went too bad, up till now. Hopefully he won’t get fucked over this. Regardless of personal feelings that some have about this man, he was and is THE POLICE! Heavy; oh hell yes! but the POLICE!

"T-Dub"? That fucking moron! I'm positive he has "breathe" tattooed somewhere, just to remind him what to do!

You hit the nail on the head with the “so he can get rid of more white bosses”. He’ll keep one or two, just because… but the rest, they are screwed! Just wait till he makes Supt.!!!!!

The facility at 61 and Racine, has card or key access for persons assigned there. Anyone working OPY, what Officer Soderberg was working, has to knock on the door to be gain entrance or piggyback when another p.o. is entering. We need a more secure way of getting into the building. The next knock at the door could be a "Crazy" with a loaded gun.

my small shitty USMC reserve station on foster ave has better security. we have fences all around, barb wire, cameras, gates with codes, doors inside with codes etc. I dont understand how simple security measures are not taken at stations in areas that have extremely high crime. Some of these basic security measures arnt even very expensive. fencing and barb wire dosnt run much, im sure you can find the money in J-fleds extremely overpaid yearly income. I dont even work in 007 but id even donate whatever i could to get the project started. im sure you can find civilians that would as well. I assumed basic level security would be a priority, i feel like a dumbass myself. How many dangerous incidents or po lives need to be lost for j fled and the brass to man up and fix this? anyone been to glenviews new station? that place is a fortress. J-fled also apparently does "ride alongs" why dosnt he come down to 007 and hang out a bit, maybe work there for a day or two? LEAD BY EXAMPLE shitbag

The crap about the commander getting fired over the security at racine is nonsense. I know for a fact that he and his staff made many requests, suggestions. Damn near begged that security be improved. They got stroked evry time. Theres a bunch of us that have had to do 'work' on that building before and after they moved in and even we thought it was a joke that they were making the cops work like that. What a dump. We had a job to do and did it best we could with what they gave, but damn- they sure tried hard to sell that pig in a dress. It's not the first time I've seen other city workers jagged by 'the budget' but this was ajoke. Theirs a very heavy woman-director that calls the shots on that stuff, holds the purse strings and she's a nasty one. Wouldn't give a damn about a cop or anyone else in this shithole city- only her spot and the power she waves around.

I'll admit Capt. TW isn't (or wasn't) a very well liked guy when he made exempt. But I'm willing to bet that the stats in TRU didn't change much, if at all, with the change in leadership from Williams to Ryan. I'm even willing to bet the stats have dropped. From what I hear, TW is well liked as a WC over in 008. He's certainly no more incompetent than what is currently leading this Dept. today. Can anyone say with a straight face that Roy or Alvarado are any better? Or the cmdrs of A/4, where overtime theft resulted in just about every Sgt. run out of the place? It is likely that EB will make moves to reinstate TW to the exempt ranks.
So be it. EB apparently has been forgiven all of his formidable sins with the powers that be, and TW doesn't have any of THAT baggage on his career. The only thing that may stand in EB's way of running JJ out of town and/or becoming the next top cop seens to be Masters (x3).

7/12/2010 02:18:00 AM

Great idea, but Alex is not alone.
The front of the 018 District was renamed in honor of Sgt. James Severin and PO Anthony Rizzato, a few years back.(EOW July 1970.)
There are, among some others, street signs for Brian Strouse and Rick Francis that I'm aware of as well.

(Sarcasm off)

You do have a point and at one time I would have agreed with you 100%. But in the last few years, I've seen several REAL POLICE go from the hard charging, lock 'em up type to taking the summer off because of an "alleged" IOD.

I guess my point is just be careful about what you say about your fellow officers. While some are milking the system, there are others that are legitimately injured.

We are all getting old and an injury suffered at 2 years on the job may not result in an IOD. But get that same injury after 20 years and the results will be different.

He passed away three years ago. The tact guy did not kill the offender, who was a recluse ,could not unbotton his coat to get to his gun so he had to duck into the hallway and returned when he unholstered. Up until that time desk officers and officers assigned to the front office ( only 3 of them) were not armed by choice. Sgt. Jones carried a .38 snub in his pants pocket. Sgt. Jones pulled his revolver from his front pants pocket while laying on the floor wounded and killed the offender shooting him in the neck. Sgt.Jones was a friend of mine and agreat guy.

Unfortunately, the department hasn't taken security at the stations seriously in a very long time.

If my memory is correct, wasn't there an incident 5 or 10 years ago in Chicago when some nut came into a station, and pulled a gun on the officer at the desk? The guy tried to shoot a few of those by the desk, but his gun jammed. Then he was tackled by the officer at the desk after the other offices dove for cover.

Nobody thinks like that anymore. They'll all complain, and maybe somebody will leave a note for the District Manager who will then contact somebody downtown to put in an order for a sign. Several months later, a sign will arrive with numerous mispellings and giving the wrong information so another sign will have to be ordered. The new one will eventually show up and found to have no hooks or adhesive or whatever to hang it up with so another order will have to be put in for that. Then, somewhere down the road, somebody will show up from buildings to hang the sign. By this time, the district manager will have either retired or transferred and the new one, if there is one, will have no idea what the guy is talking about when he shows up, won't be able to find the sign and the hooks or adhesives will be holding something together in the station that has broken.
