Camera Failures Again!

  • A crime wave is spreading on the CTA, and all the security cameras the transit agency has installed do not seem to be making much of an impact.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday morning that the number of robberies on Chicago Transit Authority buses, 'L' trains and 'L' platforms was up 77 percent between 2006 and 2009. Thefts are up 17 percent.

Thieves are having a field day, especially targeting electronic items such as iPods and laptops.

Data from the Better Government Association shows overall, crime on the CTA is up more than 26 percent in the last four years.

Crime on the CTA is expected to be up 12 percent this year, even though ridership was up just 0.4 percent in the first six months of 2010, the Sun-Times reported.
Once again, the media bought into Shortshanks' bullshit about cameras being the savior of everything and then reporting the exact opposite with nary a trace of shame. Even in London, the most heavily videoed city in existence, the cameras don't prevent a single crime and only solve 1 in 1,000 crimes.

The next time Daley touts his "cameras as crime fighters" statistics, remember he's running a half-a-billion dollar hole in his budget - how much of that hole could have been filled by the money he's pissing away on cameras?

Three out of my last four work days on a primary beat car were with out of commission in-car cameras. No camera most of the time.

I remember way back, when we used to ride the trains in plain clothes and make all kinds of great arrests. There were a lot of police out there on the trains, but now there are almost none. The CPD just doesn't have the manpower like it should anymore. And the cameras area big joke. We need boots on the ground! The detective division is so depleted and there is just no manpower to be watching video. God help the CPD and chicago. The city needs to hire more coppers ASAP!

Too little, too late. If the Predictive Analysis Unit had been established a long time ago, they could have PREDICTED that the cameras would fail. Think of the $$ that could have been saved . . . Probably enough to justify another exempt salary . . .

When a crime is reported to an Officer from a District on the mas transit system, the crime goes to the Public Transportation Unit. No downgrading on the street for numbers sake. If it's a robbery, it is classified as a robbery. This is a more accurate number than the Districts numbers.

All the games we play with crime statistics are not helping anything.

post 9-11 and i can tell you there are times when there are as little as 8 police officers on afternoons in mass transit. that would be for the entire system. and a tact team that will generate an event number to take a train ride with their radios off.

Just watched the WGN noon news. Wanted to see if my kid was a placard carrying demonstrator. Short news.

But since I'm retired, living the good life in Flawida, watched the rest of the news, just for "culture."

A kid got beaten soft, while taking the "cameras will protect me" route.

Only the police will protect you, young son, and there are far too few of them to make the necessary impact.

Not like when I was in the Task Force in the 60's, and crime died when we came to town.

Then we left, for the next
"high crime" mission.

Fuck respect! Let them fear you!

not to mention the fact they took 13 po's for tru for the anti violence detail... thats working out real good I see.

Cant blame the commander, mass transit is working with a skeleton crew.
