The first question isn't: Can Rahm win? It's: Can Rahm run?
Sunday, Rahm Emanuel announced in a video posted on a website that he is preparing to run for mayor of Chicago. But two of Chicago's top election lawyers say the state's municipal code is crystal clear that a candidate for mayor must reside in the town for a year before the election.
That doesn't mean they must simply own a home in the city that they rent out to someone else. They must have a place they can walk into, keep a toothbrush, hang up their jacket and occasionally sleep, the lawyers say.
Of course, people leave town on a temporary basis constantly and don't surrender their residency. Politicians, military service members, college students, dead people buried in the suburbs, etc.
And of course, this will be heard in a Cook County courtroom, most of which are wholly owned subsidiaries of Shortshanks, Inc. And by a Cook County judge, most of whom are also owned by Shanks, seeing as how he put them there. If Rahm is truly Daley's pick, this was all taken care of months ago. There's a better chance of knocking Meeks off the ballot than this tool.

During the 1991 Gulf War, Emanuel went to Israel to serve as a civilian volunteer with the Israeli Defence Forces. At a time when American servicemen were in harms way, Emanuel did not join the US military or volunteer to assist the US military. He elected to assist the military of a foreign nation. It is a legitimate question to ask Rahm, and in no way anti-Semitic, where are his loyalties? To Chicago - even though he has spent more time in Washington than here. To the United States - even though he preferred the serve with the military of Israel than the American.

If the courts decide Rahm is a resident after leaving and renting out his home, is this not setting a legal precedent for ALL city employees to OWN a residence in the city but rent the place out, and LIVE in the suburbs???????
I say go for it Rahm, but once he's in office the FOP should use that as leverage and we can finally lift the residency rule for Police/Fire.

The judges and the lawyers control the courts and the law. We learned that many times with the "Motions to Fix" with Gerry Callahan. How many times was he declared not guilty?
The politicians control the government and the elections. If you don't believe it, watch Rahm run! His job was in Washington, D.C. His residence is in Chicago, Illinois. All politicians get the preferential treatment and the selective and exclusive option.
My measure of residency in Chicago is this: Did you purchase a Chicago city vehicle license for all of the vehicles you own for the past two years? It's also King Richard's measure of residency.
Once his tenant votes from that single family address, that makes his residency null and void.

It is just amazing how these POS politicians can just manipulate the law to their own needs. How many officers have been suspended/fired for residency even though, as Rahm's people say, they've maintained a residence and paid property taxes in Chicago, their children were born in Chicago, they were born in Chicago blah, blah, blah, BUT lived at an address outside the city?
Take this to court? IT HAS been to court MANY times and the last ruling, if I recall, the judge said that residency is determined by where you spend at least 60% of your time "at home". Rahm has been out of the city for 2 years, and based on that judges ruling he is UNABLE to run for Mayor. If they let this pass when does FOP begin negotiations to allow Chicago Officers to live outside the city using THEIR CRITERIA for allowing Rahm to run!? Oh I forgot FOP STILL has their head up the politicians asses trying to get "good spots" for themselves!

The Cook County Central Committee of the Democratic Party, that's who.

Oh, people with names like Ed Burke, John Daley P. J. (Patricia) Cullerton to name a few.
Potential judges play the game and stand in front of the committee and recite how "loyal" and "hardworking" they have been and how they have served the "party" and beg for slating (a virtual guarantee of election) in one of the judge openings before elections.
The real game is played out behind the scenes and takes place in private, away from prying reporters' eyes.
Then, those wired and connected (CLOUT) judge candidates get "elected" to their judge job. Surprise surprise!
Then some do-gooder election law specialist says something like "Rahm Emmanuel isn't a Chicago resident in my highly educated opinion" and the case goes to court in front of one of the aforementioned duly elected judges.
Then the judge rules the way the judge is supposed to rule and voila! Like magic, Rahm is declared an actual resident of Chicago and is able to run for mayor!
And the judge gets repaid when the time comes with a better spot in a better courthouse or an appellate spot or, the ultimate prize for judges, a 10 year spot on the Illinois Supreme Court.
Or perhaps you thought the courts were fair and impartial? That they decide cases on what, their merits? Please, grow up. It is like believing in the merit promotion process or the tooth fairy or roller derby, pro wrestling or the CPD.
If they didn't have a judge who would decide in Rahm's favor he would still be in Washington.
You can bet on that before you lay off any more on the next Notre Dame game.
If this was Joe Schmoe, he wouldn't have a chance. Any challenge would be upheld.
But this is Rahm Emanuel, and if it gets that far, a Cook County courtroom.

True, but obviously the person who controls that law has an office on the 5th floor of City Hall.
Now is the time to put pressure on those running for mayor and see which one(s) will back changing this arcane law.
This should be one of the major issues in who we (ALL city workers) back for mayor.
Also obvious is how powerful a Chicago mayor is. Look at all these people talking about running; congressmen, etc., all willing to take a STEP DOWN to a local government office.

well it looks like the only way ill ever be hired on cpd is if i become a clout baby, it seems to be the choice for politians. so whats the best way of going about this? actually you know forget it. id rather just give up a 27 year dream and work somewhere else. then i can laugh from across the country at all the BS here instead of living right in the middle of it and have everyone else laugh at me/us.

this guy is the biggest d- bag. the sad part is 95% of this city will listen to what the media tells them which will be sucking off rahm. i wish our 5%(cpd and scc readers\fans\supporters etc) had more pull. We are seriously the laughing stock of the country, my active duty military experience which just ended took me all over the country and i met people from EVERYWHERE, nearly everyone knows something negative or embarassing about this city and/or state. im even talking about 18 year old kids from a town of 400 in texas. i even had a kid asked if we were brainwashed by daley like hitler did to the germans. i spent a lot of boring firewatch explaining that there are some out here that think for ourselves and actually have the best interests of the people in mind, i then preceeded to give this web address as proof, although it did backfire a bit seeing that they know know how much more worse we are then people thought, but they get the point.
