Cicero PD Officer Dies

Not a Line of Duty death, but according to an e-mailer, as he was walking into roll call:
  • If possible, can you make mention and say a prayer for Officer Sam Vargas #200 from our dept. who passed away suddenly Saturday (10-02-10) while walking into roll call. He worked the day shift and had about 12 years on the job. He was 37 years old and left a wife and very small children. An autopsy is scheduled to determine cause of death. We only have about 125 coppers so when we lose one, it's especially tough. Thank you.
While we don't usually mention deaths in main posts that aren't Line of Duty related, this one struck a chord (we do still post remembrances in most of our comment sections for officers passing away). We've known half-a-dozen officers who were at roll call one day, then never again. It's always a shock, no matter the age. Keep an eye out for all our brother and sister officers.

I am former CPD, and my parents and Uncles are RETIRED CPD. We had the opportunity to have a HEART SCAN done thru HEARTSCAN CHICAGO a few years ago, as did my cousin, who is CFD. They take GOOD care of ALL Police, (SHERIFF, FEDS, FBI), and CFD. They only charged us what the INSURANCE paid...NO CO-PAY. I don't know if they still do or not. It doesn't matter. I imagine the CO-PAY is cheaper than a PINE BOX.

GET CHECKED!!!
It doesn't HAVE to be at HEARTSCAN...
Just GET CHECKED!

It's only that imaginary line that separates our law enforcement agencies.
It's that Thin Blue Line that keeps us together.
We likewise feel the pain of your loss.
Rest in Peace our brother.

to 12.20 I went thru a Heartscan type thing also (sorry, I can't remember the name) also...well worth the time and cost ($100)

Without knowing the officer, but knowing what we go through as a profession: Quit smoking, Lay off the red meat somewhat, Drink metamucil or citricel and get some exercise.

Our job is hard enough without the added stress put on it by saturated fats, smoking, excess alcohol use or not exercising.

This sad and sudden loss might have been prevented by a defibrillator. Don't the stations have them? Some people have symptomless arrhythmias that can be sensitive to excess caffeine, causing the heart to beat so fast it only flutters uselessly. Unfortunately, the first time it happens could be the last.

"He Answered The Call"

Today in the sun, I bid him farewell
A man, a hero, I never knew well

Like many before him, who answered the call
Wearing a badge, he was destined to fall

Though by choice a long life and a happy old age
Would he have chosen, had he written the page

But the office he chose never promised long life
Just half of his salary, for his child and his wife

He went without fear, into the darkness of night
Bringing comfort to some, to some others light

Easing their pain and calming their fears
He did his duty, never asking for cheers

A husband, a cop, he answered the call
We bid him farewell for he gave his all
