Phleger Sells a Pfantasy

  • The Rev. Michael Pfleger on Sunday again railed against gun violence stealing the lives of Chicago's youth. But he wasn't behind the pulpit of his South Side church, St. Sabina, or on the streets of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods.

Pfleger was in the wealthy Gold Coast neighborhood at Fourth Presbyterian Church, encouraging about 100 people to rally lawmakers in Springfield for tougher gun laws.

"They may not be listening to … me and some of the folks on the South Side and the West Side. But when Michigan Avenue stands up, it's a different story," Pfleger said.
Anyone have the homicide numbers for North Michigan Avenue? We pretty sure it's a number approaching zero. And funnily enough, they even had to import an "anti-gunner" from the south side to provide a quote:
  • "Now that I have a child, I can't imagine what it would be like to lose one," said Anna Vest, of Hyde Park, holding her 21-month-old son, Noah.
And it heads downhill from there:
  • Among the speakers was Joseph Walker, whose grandson, 16-year-old Derrion Albert, was beaten to death on Sept. 24, 2009, as he walked home from school. After Albert's death, Walker started Pain to Power, a foundation dedicated to the safe passage of children to and from school.
Um....what does that have to do with guns? He was beaten to death. With a two-by-six. During a gang fight that he was an active participant in. And for that, we the law-abiding people of Chicago have to surrender our Rights to self-defense?

The fact is that many people need guns to defend themselves, in some cases, from people traveling up from the south and west sides....you know, where St. Sabina's is located? That isn't a racist statement - that's cold hard reality. The "Gold Coast" and North Michigan Avenue aren't much of a problem, though problems crop up there on occasion. And it really isn't them leaving the 'hood to hassle Phleger's pflock.

Pfleger isn't preaching responsibility. He isn't even preaching to the right crowd. He's injecting himself into matters of state and Constitutional law and really ought to be slapped down by the Cardinal for doing so.

I can agree with that. That is why I will not be defenceless, no matter what the bad guy brings to hurt my family.

I need my gun to protect myself from Father Phleger's parishioners. They are they dangerous ones. Ban them. Make them obey the laws. I keep guns in case one of them mistakes my front door for the door of a confessional and decides to come inside.

He will get redemption in my front room, sure enough. A quick trip to the medical examiner is waiting.

Father Phleger ought to tend to his flock, they are the dangerous ones we all need protection from.

And when the hell is the Cardinal going to grow some balls and shitcan this impostor Phleger? Since when is the pastor of St Sabinas immune from the rules of the church? The Catholic Church doesn't get a dime from me ever since the Cardinal caved and kept Phleger in that position.

I think that most people see Phleger for the grandstanding, self important fool that he is. They are just too polite or too worried about being called a racist to tell him to quiet down and worry about his own backyard. Everyone sits quietly while he prattles on while they ignore him and move on.

The Catholic Church apparently doesn't see how much damage he does to the Church's credibility and ultimately, their pocketbook.

Pleger needs to be defrocked and moved out of Chicago. There is absolutely no reason for him to have been there this long. The reason the Church shuffles priests around is avoid the kind of empire building that Pfleger has done. He's not a priest, he's nothing but a damn machine politician and race baiter like JJ, JJJ and all the rest. And Daley likes him because he's a useful idiot.

Read the original comment again. Then read it again. And keep reading it until you discover that you, in fact, are the true moron. The original commenter clearly indicated that Father Phlegm needs lessonS in the Ten Commandments AND responsibility AND accountability.

And, even though the original commenter grammatically treated the three aforementioned as seperate and distinct subjects, I do find it interesting that a jerk like you sees no connection between the three.

Next time, think twice before you start pounding the keys. Think real hard, even though it will take all the strength and concentration your weak mind can muster. The effort will be worth the result, as it will most likely prevent you from suffering yet another premature ejaculation.

Quite simple... The greatest ammunition in the internet age is a photograph of hypocrisy.

Henceforth, whenever the phucker enters ghetto neighborhoods to preach pie-eyed idealism against gun rights while enjoying the very down-to-earth, entirely practical protection of a phirearm by proxy, we make sure a picture is taken that shows him surrounded by his "congregation" (munching on bags of Phlaming Hot Cheetos) and the bodyguarding coppers sidearm, there protecting him, plainly in view.

What is really sad is that Pfleger is in a position to do some real good for his flock and the rest of his community. Trying to instill responsibility and Christian virtues in the adults and especially the children of the area would go a long way toward improvement. I give the Cardinal the benefit of the doubt in that maybe he believes that Pfleger will eventually realize what he can accomplish and therefore leaves him there. There is also the problem with finding a place to put him, where he will not alienate an entire parish. It is a shame that the Father chooses to chase the publicity and noteriety in the way he does. He is entitled to his opinion on gun control and other subjects, but when he uses the pulpit to further his agenda he is simply wrong.

Rock star on tour.

This started in those wonderful 1960s; all of a sudden you had some bearded young firebrand up there in the pulpit, agitating for the passage of this or that disruptive law, flying around South America in light planes (one of ours got killed) spreading "liberation theology," i.e. Communist revolution, etc. It's become the norm now. The Hispanic church/charter school combines I see today are equally intensely radicalized with their political agenda of open borders.

There is an awful lot of other people's stuff piggybacking on the Gospel...

I didn't write any of he above but 12 years of Catholic schooling and watching Bishop Fulton J. Sheehan as a kid lets me know well that responsibility and accountability are strongly implied in the Ten Commandments.

For example, Honor Thy Father and Mother implies respect for civil authority, and accountability for any transgressions even if it's only to God.

Thou Shall Not Steal, and Thou Shall Not Covet Thy Neighbors Goods implies you are responsible to earn what you get in life.

The afterlife penalties and accountability are not spelled out, but they are there.

This has been your Sermonette of the Day, Go In Peace.

Somehow I can't imagine Father Pfleger ever using Bishop Fulton Sheen as a role model in his community. Imagine Bishop Sheen confronting government cheese, LINK cards, Food Stamps, government supplied cell phones, Section 8, Louis Farrakhan, Rev Meeks.

I think even Bishop Sheen might say the hell with it, call in some air strikes.

...and even funnier, Hyde Park isn't the South Side.

Michelle Obama helped make that really clear when she worked at the University of Chicago, working to formulate policies to keep poor black people out of the U of C Hospitals' glittering new emergency rooms. Some 9-year-old from south of the Midway got his face torn by a pit bulldog; the U of C gave him an aspirin and a "Have a nice day." His mother took him to County, where they took one look at him and rushed him straight to surgery.

All of those shuttle vans they ran were to keep their precious students off the dangerous streets; employees could f__ing well walk home at night and take their chances.

It's a unique place...

Not to be pedant, but it was Fulton Sheen. I'm an atheist, but have no problem admitting that man was a genius and brilliant communicator- wouldn't mind seeing people search him out and listen to his stuff.

Phleger couldn't carry Fulton Sheens boots. One was an uplifting genius of a theologian, one is a miserable, self-loathing peddler of blame and failure.

Kinda feel dirty talking about those two in the same sentence.

In a series of three or more terms with a single conjunction, use a comma after each term except the last.
Thus write,

red, white, and blue
honest, energetic, but headstrong
He opened the letter, read it, and made a note of its contents.

This is also the usage of the Government Printing Office and of the Oxford University Press.

In the names of business firms the last comma is omitted, as

Brown, Shipley and Company

The abbreviation etc., even if only a single term comes before it, is always preceded by a comma.
