Dangerous Neighborhoods

  • For the second year in a row, using exclusive data developed by Dr. Andrew Schiller's team at NeighborhoodScout.com, and based on FBI data from all 17,000 local law enforcement agencies, WalletPop reveals the top 25 most dangerous neighborhoods with the highest predicted rates of violent crime in America.

    This year, Chicago took the not-so coveted top spot from Cincinnati for the most dangerous neighborhood, while Atlanta has the highest number of neighborhoods making the list (four).

    You may ask, why neighborhoods and not cities? Schiller explains that even the cities with the highest crime rates can have relatively safe neighborhoods, and thus it is less useful to generalize about an entire city
And the baddest of the bad?
  • 1. Chicago, Ill.
    Neighborhood: W. Lake St.
    Found within ZIP code: 60612
    Predicted annual violent crimes: 297
    Violent crime rate (per 1,000): 257.72
    My chances of becoming a victim here (in one year): 1 in 4
Coming in at number eighteen:
  • 18. Chicago, Ill.
    Neighborhood: 4000 S. Federal St.
    Found within ZIP code: 60609
    Predicted annual violent crimes: 202
    Violent crime rate (per 1,000): 93.04
    My chances of becoming a victim here (in one year): 1 in 11
That's mostly vacant land since the projects came down, isn't it? There are blocks in Englewood and North Lawndale that didn't make the list, but that must have something to do with population density? In any event, we think J-Fled ought to fire the commanders in charge of these hell holes as they obviously aren't doing their jobs. Then he can resign, too.

That Federal Street is something. There are before-and-after pictures of it in one of my Chicago history books; the shot in the 1940s shows steam locomotives pulling trains past old houses, and lots of factory buildings. The "after CHA" shot from exactly the same location shows all the houses and factory buildings gone, just the expressway and the wonderful projects.

Now that the projects are gone, how the hell can a neighborhood have a population density approaching 0 and still make the "25 most dangerous neighborhoods" list? Same thing with Lake Street -- it looks like Berlin in 1947, after they cleared the rubble.

Amazing.

J-Fled will never resign. Supt. asshole has stuck it out this long, he will ride out the $25,000+
monthly checks until 01 March. No one here can really blame him. It's like he's practically a ghost payroller already, with 3M making all the screwed up decisions here, and accepting absolutely none of the blame for the imploding of the CPD.

I question their methodology.

#1 is most of Beat 1332 while #18 is the west half of Beat 214. Did anyone tell them that the 16-story Henry Horner and Robert Taylor projects have been razed within those beats?

#1 is bounded by Damen, Western, Washington and the RR tracks at Kinzie.

#18 is bounded by Pershing Rd. (39th St.), 43rd St., State and the Dan Ryan Expwy.

I'll venture to guess that MOST of that violence is west of Sacramento Blvd

i dont know how they came to these conclusions but since i currently work in 013 and constantly patrol that area i cannot help but disagree with that report. there are areas in 013 that are by far more dangerous than the area mentioned.

The report used crime rate per 100,000 population. Ten resident in a given area, one crime occurs, erge you have a one in ten chance of being a crime victim..

And shortshanks media says this:

CHICAGO —WGN

Violent crime is on the decline in Chicago.

The Chicago Police Department has released new statistics for the first eight months of this year.

The latest numbers show decreases in comparison to the same time last year.

The Chicago Tribune reports these numbers from January through September 2010:

* Overall crime: -4.5%
* Murder: -2%
* Aggravated Battery: - 7.7%
* Motor Vehicle Thefts: + 22.3%
* Criminal Sexual Assaults: -9%

Police said theses numbers are close to mirroring statistics of 2007.

That year ended with the lowest number of murders since 1965.

40th and federal is a construction site for new fancy projects. The data is from the future!!!! Just wait and see, anything free and new turns into shitholes in couple years.

Speaking of razing CHA housing projects, an update on what was once Cabrini-Green.

The wrecker's ball has just leveled 1230 N. Larrabee St. There is now only one 16-story building left: 1230 N. Burling St.

Who knows which set of crime data they are using. There seem to be several versions, each of them "official" which show totally different results, depending on the needs of the politicos.

Just goes to show how numbers and statistics on paper are totally incorrect when compared to reality. Good thing we have real world experienced beat cops who know the streets and not some statistical unit that will predict where violence will occur.......Oh wait, damn it!!!

Scroll all the way down

http://www.walletpop.com/blog/2010/10/04/25-most-dangerous-neighborhoods-2010/

They rank the neighborhoods on crimes per 1000 residents. I doubt there is even 1000 residents in that area as most of it is the Kinzie Corridor with factories and small business in defunct factory buildings.

There was some increase in crime there last year as bangers from the south head north to fish for yuppies north of Grand Avenue, so that could be the issue.

Just shows how stats can be manipulated...

And in true Chicago fashion, the old piss soaked concrete will be ground up, recycled and sold to the State of Illinois and become the new pavement of a local expressway.

I'll venture that the crime stats are from 1986. Old data. Whoever came up with that report still thinks that the Lake & Leavitt shootout at Horner Homes is hot news.

Since you brought up 4000 S. Federal, let's not forget P.O. Michael Ceriale who lost his life nearby on Root St. just East of Federal. AMF 3919, 4022, 4037 and 4101. God bless Ceriale, his family, partner, and those (like me) who thought he was going to make it after fighting the good fight.

Rest in Peace, brother.

Take a closer peek. The report is based on property crimes, not violent crimes.
