Meeks Flip-Flops

From this incident alone, it's kind of obvious he's going to say whatever he has to to make a serious run at the mayoral spot:
  • State Sen. James Meeks said Monday he has handed off day-to-day responsibility for operating his massive South Side church to his senior staff and would continue the arms-length relationship if he’s elected mayor.

Last month, Meeks told the Chicago Sun-Times that he would not give up his ministry at Salem Missionary Baptist Church if he’s elected mayor and that his position was “non-negotiable.”

He said he firmly believed he could run his 22,000-member church and serve as mayor at the same time and those voters who don’t think so “probably shouldn’t vote for me.”

That led several African-American aldermen to virtually rule him out as the consensus black candidate to succeed Mayor Daley.

Apparently, that position was not “non-negotiable” after all.

So once again, it appears the Machine is running two black candidates to split that voting bloc.

And does anyone know if Meeks is actually a resident of Chicago? We recall a bunch of comments saying he wasn't and that would throw a wrench in his ambitions almost instantly.

Why should Meeks' residence matter? Apparently, Rahm's does not.

Meeks actually lives in South Holland. He claims to live in a rectory in 005 but that , along with everything else he spews out of his big mouth, is a big lie.
If it was an IAD residency case the finding would be sustained and he would have been discharged.
On another note heard he forged an alliance with gd Noonie Ward to take Beale's seat as he and Beale are on the outs

The majority of blacks DO NOT want Meeks, Davis or Hendon as our next Mayor.

Carol M Braun may not be a good candidate either, that will be decided when the real campaigning starts.

These posts make you seem paranoid and delusional, there is no fix in, everyone is tired of do-nothing, corrupt politicians.

Peraica with his mob ties, just got arrested, dressed in all black "cat burglar" clothes and then sued to cover up alledgedly criminal behavior. You could see he was a maniac when lost to Stroger.

People, especially, decent, productive blacks, are tired of this mess.

I come up with three property records:

11824 S. Indiana, Chicago in July 2001 (which seems to be the mega-church address)

2050 River Oaks Dr, Cal City in October 2004

16903 Manor Drive, South Holland, no date

A 16 Sept Sun Times article claims to verify he does live adjacent to the church and the high end home in South Holland was purchasd for his father.

Didn't search Jamie/Jamell, his wife, though. Going to bed now so I can get out and vote in the morning.

Let's see . . . . Rahm vs. Meeks vs. Candidate No. 3. Meeks and No. 3 split the democratic base, leaving Rahm with the victory. It worked for Harold.

Clearly, Daley and Rahm have been pals a long time, but they have kept their relationship low key. Now that Daley is leaving, he is handing the keys to the city to Rahm. This is evident by the sudden dropping out of the race by the candidates, like bugs around a bug light. Dart, Fioretti, who else has been told in back room deals not to mess with the mayor's control of the city? This is the puppet master pulling the strings. we are like children in the audience.

Vote republican so that we can get screwed by someone new. the city's democratic party is like an old hag you just can't get rid of.

Unless St. Rahm of the Nine Fingers gets 50 percent of the vote in February, unlikely, it goes to round two in April between the top two vote getters.

Right now the opposition in general is weak and no announced potential black candidate could win city wide.

Davis? Shit.

Braun? Shit.

Rogers? Who is that Shit?

Meeks? Reverend Shit who is a big spender and social conservative.

The hispanic candidates are weak and or have baggage.

Chico? Shit.

Del Valle? Seems decent but can he defeat the nine fingered wonder.?

Tom Dart could have beaten Rahm, but he either doesn't have the heart for the race or had some huge skeleton in his closet that Rahm found out about.

We're left with a field of munchkins facing an asshole of biblical proportion.

Right now the best hope the Rahmulans have is for one of the weaker black candidates end up in the runoff.

It's unfortunate no serious candidate, black or white or brown or lime green for that matter, will apparently be facing the Rahmulan.

I've met exactly one person who likes Emmanuel and that person isn't very bright. What Chicago has done to deserve our leaders is beyond me.

You guys are living in the past. The election will require a run-off of the top two if there is no 50+% candidate in February. Splitting the black vote only matters if it means no black candidate would get into the top two. Not like the old days when you could win with 35% of the vote.

The definition of residency is loose, except if you are a city employee, that is. It is where you are registered to vote, where you pay utilities, where you lay you head on most nights, where your personal vehicle is registered and where you keep some of your personal effects. Meeks could easily have a residence for him in the city and one for his family in the burbs. This is the standard used by the city to determine employee residency. I had a house in the city and when I retired I sold it to a man coming on the fire department. His family never moved from the burbs and he only stays in the house on the nights he works, which is two each week. If you have enough cash to have two houses or an apartment and a house, then you can do the same. Most cops I know or knew had to work two jobs to pay the tuition.

Don't let this one go people. Neither of them live in Chicago and should not be able to run for Mayor.

What started the Harold Washington era was Daley's refusal to back out and let the incumbent mayor, Jayne Byrne have a clear shot at Harold. By staying in the race, the white vote was split allowing Washington to gain the Democratic spot in the general election.

Even with that, a political unknown Republican, Saul Epton, came within a whisker of becoming mayor.

Don't confuse Chicago's residency requirements to be employed by the City. It is a state law that defines the requirements for a candidate to run for election. You can own property wherever you want, but your primary residence must be within the political entity for which you are running for office for the period of 12 months before the election. This being the County of Cook, I don't see why they would let a 100+ year old law get in the way of a good election - perhaps they'll use Chicago's bullshit status as a "sanctuary city"?

Chicago needs more of a celebrity mayor like Donald Trump or Mike Ditka. Someone who can handle the idiot media we have here as well as give Chicago a better image.

Too bad Trump doesn't live here but looking at the competition - they don't really live here either so having a condo at Trump Tower should qualify Trump as much as Rahm is "qualified".

Sound too radical? Look at the choices today. Are they any better?
Rahm? No way.
Meeks? No way.
Braun? No way.

People have to start waking up and seeing that this city needs leadership and not a clone of Daley or anyone else.

hey moron! He came very close to winning!

"A resident of the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Epton ran against the liberal African American Democrat Harold Washington in the mayoral election in the spring of 1983. In a racially charged election, Epton came within 40,000 votes (of 1.2 million cast) of defeating the Democratic nominee. His total was the high-water mark for Chicago Republicans in elections for mayor in the heavily Democratic city. Epton received 81 percent of the votes of Chicago whites, and 3 percent from blacks".

That's 620,000 to 580,000. Ask ANY elected official if that is a close election and they will say it is.

Recently, many of my close police officer friends have pointed me toward this site... One of your contributors have asked "is there anyone out there, anyone, maybe an independent, who will run for mayor?" I would like to answer that call! I have been collecting signatures for the last month to get on the ballot. My name is John Hu and I am an Independent candidate for the Mayor of Chicago. I am fed up with career politicians ruining our great city. My experience is in business and a new CEO is needed to clean up Chicago government. Many of my friends know even before finding this blog, I am an advocate of the Chicago Police Department. I have publicly stated I will promote from within for the police top spot and Jody Weis is out! Other candidates will not definitively say what they will do about this. I believe it starts at the top in any type of organization. Without that leadership, the officers don't have the confidence to go out and do their jobs. Morale is completely destroyed. I will hire an additional 1000-2000 new police officers. No longer will experienced officers be moved from their current district to unfamiliar ones. I will shore up the pension problem for both the police and firefighters of Chicago. They predict by 2023 there will be no more money to fully secure your pensions. I will not let that happen! Mismanagement, government waste and inefficiency have decimated every aspect of Chicago government. I will fix the problems with CPS. No longer will the children of Chicago be the victims! Finally, Chicago receives enough revenue. This next year over $6.15 billion has been allocated for the next budget. We have enough money! No property tax increases! We need to run Chicago more efficiently. Within 2 weeks of becoming Mayor, I will hire an outside auditor, with no connections to Chicago, to perform a complete forensic audit of Chicago finances. From all revenue collected to all expenditures to get a complete idea of where our money is being wasted. Finally, can I win? It's probably not heard too often, but I hope I come in 2nd! No person in this race will be able to get 50% of the vote to win outright. Rahm Emanuel, who seems to want to keep Weis will probably come in first with the most votes. Everyone else will split up the remaining votes. When I come in 2nd it's run-off time for me and Mr. Emanuel! I have gotten an incredible response from the citizens from every ethnic group. Getting on the ballot will be worldwide news! I will have 15 minutes of fame to get my word out. A non-politician on the ballot running against the machine...let the race begin! The younger vote 18-34 now comprises 30% of registered voters in Chicago. Too many people are fed up with what politicians promise before the election then it's back to business as usual the day after. I want to be your voice and I want to make a difference!

What started the Harold Washington era was indeed Daley splitting the white vote with Jane.

It's like a play in a playbook. Two candidates may be close in the polls. A third candidate splits the base of one of the other candidates. The winner benefits from the rift caused by the third candidate.

Daley did split the white vote. Can someone in the next election split the black vote? does that matter? what about the white vote? the point is that if a viable challenger to mayor appears, a third candidate will be introduced to help Rahm. it's a play that worked before, so try it again but use it to the Machine's advantage this time.

Somehow, the democratic party of Chicago, which seems to have absolutely nothing in common with the national democratic party, has unbelievable control over government in chicago.

For what, almost 40 years, the Daley clan has run Chicago government. When Richie II took office, some of his father's advisors became his advisors (tom donovan of CBOT fame, for example).

Imagine buying a house, but every door, window, closet, drawer, cabinet, etc., had a lock with a different key. The seller tells you that you can buy the house, but he won't give you all the keys to the different locks to make the house functional. would you buy this house? this is Daley's position. he is the seller. anyone who comes into the mayor's office won't know sh*t about where everything is because the Daleys hold all the keys to city government and its day-to-day functions. Daley will only sell the house to someone he trusts (the Bridgeport way). Welcome Rahm Emanuel. Goodbye Dart.

Apologies for the long post, but with Daley stepping down, there was hope for a bright future, but with the candidates being presented, the future doesn't look so bright anymore.

From the bilions of dollars gained from these incredible assets...NOT ONE DOLLAR! A one-time fix to the pension fund would have insured a better retirement for many more officers. Better management and efficiency is needed to make these things happen. Like I mentioned before under my administration you will have a new leader from within. This is essential to start at the top with someone who worked as a partolman, and then moved up the ranks. Someone who has experienced what you have gone through, before they make a decision on your behalf. You need to be able to trust your leaders first before you can go out and do the job you were meant to do with confidence.
Help me make a difference!

"The seller tells you that you can buy the house, but he won't give you all the keys to the different locks to make the house functional. would you buy this house?" Anonymous

This house sounds like a house in foreclosure... One that is completely upside down (deficit), where the owners have left all the doors locked, the water running and have taken the keys (Daley). This house needs to be remodeled, doors replaced, and fully inspected (forensic audit) before the next buyer can move in. I like your analogy because everything that is happening seems to be heading toward that "inside deal" where the new buyer has already been chosen. But that final approval from the bank (people) won't happen. Here's why... The people of Chicago are getting smarter. They know if they approve this deal they will be the ones to pay in the long-run. The days of tolerating the abuse from our elected leaders is over. It is time to take a stand for Chicago and take back the city. It is estimated at least 20 new alderman will fill council seats this next election. As mayor I will make sure everyone can work together for the greater good of Chicagoans!

After 21 years of King Daley II, I would have loved to have Jane Bryne or Harold Washington in Daley's place, especially after reading the archives here about how police were/are treated and increased crime (especially in downtown).

Whether it's John Hu or someone else, I'd like to volunteer and vote for a candidate that is aligned with the police and other liked minded people.

Let's show these career politicians who the real boss is... the People of Chicago! I think sometimes they forget this. And once in awhile... maybe, every 21 years, we need to remind them!

Whether any of these groups pick a consensus candidate, the people they represent will vote with their conscience and not always the way their representative wants. I'm hoping this will be the case.

Keeping as many candidates in this race is better for the campaign. The more candidates there are the lower the total average votes per candidate. The less the 2nd place finisher needs to get to the run-off election against the "chosen one".

By the way, I keep reading about something that seems equally important to police officers which I would like to address at this time. Residency seems to be an important issue among them. I know we couldn't completely take away the residency requirement. This would be quite detrimental for the City of Chicago and I've told everyone I won't do anything to hurt the citizens. How about this...

So the city doesn't have an exodus of police residents, how about if we try something like this to be discussed with my new superintendent. For every new officer hired next year (I plan 1000+) how about allowing the exact number to start preparing for a move to the burbs the following year. Thus, the net effect on resident loss is zero. We can continue this process by seniority (number of years on the job) and willing participants. We will work out the legal hassles together to make this happen.

Your candidate, your voice!
