Rahm is the Early Leader

  • Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel is off to an early lead in the race for Chicago mayor, but there is plenty of room for other contenders in the crowded field as the fluid contest takes shape, a new Tribune/WGN poll found.

Emanuel had the support of 32 percent of voters, just ahead of 30 percent who were undecided, making him the only candidate in double-digits with more than two months before the Feb. 22 city election. He was well short of the outright majority needed to avoid an April runoff between the top two finishers.

First though, Emanuel has to survive a ballot challenge by those who say he doesn't qualify under rules requiring mayoral candidates to be Chicago residents for a year before the election. While several more of the 15 current candidates could be knocked off or drop out as the race gets serious, the poll showed a splintered field largely defined by name recognition.

  • Rahm Emanuel kept his famously sharp political tongue in check for more than 11 hours Tuesday as a phalanx of indignant activists and a seasoned election attorney poked and prodded him during a hearing on whether he is eligible to run for mayor of Chicago.

The most serious attack on his candidacy came in the first 90 minutes of the hearing as the lead attorney challenging Emanuel bored in on the issue of whether the former White House chief of staff meets the requirement of being a Chicago resident for one year prior to the Feb. 22 election.

The citizen questioners seemed to be run-of-the-mill head cases. The serious questions were at the beginning and fielded fairly well by Rahm's lawyers or the hearing officer. No serious punches were landed that haven't already been debated here and elsewhere.

Just heard a commercial on the radio from the FOP. It stated 911 calls are going unanswered because the mayor has depleted the CPD and the voters should make hiring police officers the number 1 priority.
All I have to say is bettetlate than never.

I remember somewhere along the way being taught that it's the SPIRIT in which a law is intended that is important and NOT necessarily the letter of the law. For this residency challenge, certainly the SPIRIT or INTENT of the law would be to prevent people who are outsiders and/or non-Chicagoans from sliding into town right before an election and taking over, perhaps due to popularity or some other welcome trait. For example, if Donald Trump showed up and registered to run for mayor, he just might win because many believe he could whip this city into shape like a reality show (they might be right!). The regular Crime Family politicians don't want those people coming in and marking territory on Crime Family turf. Remember their mantra: "We don't want nobody that nobody sent".

As much as I dislike Rahm, I think this residency issue is more of a parlor trick by another candidate or two to muddy up Rahm in the eyes of the voters. We all knew that he wanted to be mayor. He said so on April 20th, 2010... http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2010
/04/rahm-emanuel-i-want-to-be-mayor-of-chicago.html

I hate to say it, but I think he'll beat this challenge and it'll be upheld in court and left up to the voters to decide.

Rahm has been annointed to take over from Shortshanks and there is nothing anybody can do about it. Voting is a joke! He will finish running Shitcago into the ground. In the process he will make himself and his friends rich. When the ground starts burning under him, he will seek haven in his native country.

"The citizen questioners seemed to be run-of-the-mill head cases."

One of them was a very large, officious African-American lady wearing a weird gold lame' turban, who described herself as being "Queen Sister Something Something."

I'm still laughing.

Almost as funny as Rahm allegedly keeping a piano, two TVs, and a stereo in some closet downstairs in that house. After all, that's what the residency law says. Right?

Chicago residents have been bombarded with millions of dollars worth of Rahm Emanuel ads online -- they're coming through Google Syndication, and pop up on Yahoo, Scribd, just about anywhere you go. I finally went to InPrivate browsing in IE8 and set it to reject Google Syndication ads; couldn't stand the sight of that face one more time.

It's supposedly a "yes/no" poll as to whether Rahm should be allowed to run -- as though popular opinion affected the law any -- but it's just data mining; it won't accept a straight answer, but redirects to another page to try to get you to fill in your name and e-mail address.

Scummy, but just what you'd expect.

Getting sick of Google tracking everything all over; some new federal opt-out "Do Not Track" legislation -- similar to the "Do Not Call" telephone registry -- is in the works, and I can't wait.

Look on the Web for a piece of freeware called PeerBlock; I've got it blocking well over 1 BILLION intrusive web sites from getting onto my box.

As a citizen troller, let me be the first to decry the future of the City government. In a few words: More of the same. In fact, not one single candidate is a true leader or administrator of the public good or has any clue about being a leader. Chico is the best IMO but he is not the answer. Rahm is the worst and has 38% support in the polls, far ahead of anyone else. I am convinced my fellow citizens are asshats.

If Rahm does get kicked off the ballot due to residency requirements, what is to prevent him from running a write-in campaign (ala Senator Lisa from Alaska)?

Is the residency only a requirement for the ballot, or for the office?

If he wins a write-in, what judge will overturn that?

I think we gonna be stuck with Rahm for at least 20 years.

Rahm may have faired fairly well in the beginning but Burt Odelson is one of the sharpest election lawyers in the country. When Rahm signed his tax returns as a part time resident not thinking that Short Shanks was done he didn't realize that he was done too! Service to the United States means the military not working in the White House as Chief of Staff. He admitted he didn't live in the City. Rahm has BIG PROBLEMS when it comes to the mayors office. The rest of the fool questioners are a bunch of blowhards. Daley's hearing officer may find for Rahm but he'll lose in Court.
Bet on it.

That is INCORRECT, if you own properties here in the City and you rent them out and live somewhere else outside the City. You still pay TAXES on these properties BUT you are not considered a RESIDENT. This is in due part to the fact that you are NOT PHYSICALLY LIVING IN THOSE PROPERTIES/RESIDENCES. Here endith the lesson of RESIDENCY.

Why is the media shoving this asshole down our throat? They act like he went to Washington to "serve our country." The last I checked, he wasn't over in the middle east serving our country. He took a JOB in Washington and left Chicago. He doesn't meet the qualifications to be the mayor. He moved out of the city. I don't care if he has personal affects in a house in Chicago. Hell, I have a summer home in Florida, but that doesn't qualify me as a Florida resident. Whether or not he's SMART enough to be mayor is irrelevant, he doesn't live here so he shouldn't be allowed to run. Mr. Meeks (I can't bring myself to call him a reverend), that hibbity jibbity tub of shit lives in South Holland and also is claiming to be a Chicago resident. What, does he live in his church? Again, if I have a store out in Palos or Oak Lawn, does that qualify me as a Palos or Oak Lawn resident? No. He shouldn't be able to run either. We're fucked any way you look at it. I know I don't want Rahm, Meeks, nor Chico. So who is left? Danny Davis, Carol Mosely Braun, and Miguel Del Valle? There doesn't seem to be any upstanding candidates to even vote for.

Has the FOP claimed to endorse anyone yet? Who would be the best candidate for the police to vote for? Doesn't Rahm have some sort of grip with our pension? Mr. Meeks isn't a huge fan of the police either. What's left? Chico is part of the machine, Mosely Braun wasn't good as a senator, she was corrupt too. Moseley Braun was the main character in a 1993 Federal Elections Commission investigation over $249,000 in unaccounted-for campaign funds. So that leaves us with Danny Davis who they propped up and decided to have run, and then Miguel Del Valle, who aside from his name being on my city sticker, I know nothing about.

Who do we vote for?

Chico may be the smarter of the bunch, but once Daley guy always a Daley guy. Rahm not so much a Daley guy but a Rahm guy. What comes after a being a big city mayor for Rahm? His residency issue is weak, he's a Chicagoan, period. This is probably an Axlerod PR stunt, haven't heard much about Chico lately, hmmm.
Rahm is no slouch per se, if he gets elected, he'll have 4 more years to campaign for the 2015, meanwhile the city slowly deteriorates.
I forgot, who is Mayor pro tem? If ShortShanks can drop dead by Christmas, can the vice-mayor get on ballot?
Fingers crossed!

Please take the time to fill it out and drop it in the mail indicating your choice for mayor.

It is free to you, it takes only a minute or two. Do it at work.

Still, I bet only 35% or so bother to return the things but more than that will complain they had no chance to have their voice heard.

This is your chance. Watch for that mailing, likely in early January.

chicos not even running. He's just a cock-blocker. His job is to completely divert police, black and female attention away from Carol Mosely Brown and thats exactly what he's doing. When the election is over every nit-wit Chico in this country and the next will have a job at city hall. Meet the new Strogers.

OT.......

Just saw the video of the alledged hero of the Orland Park Robbery. I just want to know why this guy is being called a hero?

He took the gun away from the guy who then began to run out the door. There was no struggle. There was no fight. He followed the guy outside and then popped 2 rounds in him. Where is all the outrage? HE was in no danger for his life he had possession of the firearm that could kill him. Why did he not call police? Why is the news runnning with a hero story?

Had that been one of us we be quoted as "Police Shoot Unarmed Robber" "Police gun down un-armed man" Yet this guy is hero for doing something that a police officer does daily. The officers who shoot armed violent criminals are never deemed heros. THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMMMMMMM

You sure are one big Asshole! This guy did society a HUGE favor and saved the tax payers a lot of money. The bad guy put a gun to his head and then fucked up by not paying attention. The bad guy doesn't get to cry "uncle" and walk away. I hope to hell you are not the police. If so go work in IAD because no one would be safe having you as a partner.

It's obvious neither one on you guys watched the video. Nobody put a gun to anyone's head, nobody shot anybody outside, and nobody was running out the door. You sound like dude, just making shit up because your too fucking lazy to watch the news.

"Worth millions yet he had to get that rent."

Oh, no, no. He covered that too. He wanted the house inhabited for "safety and security reasons."

You pay him money to be allowed to guard "Amy's piano in the basement."

Such a deal.

Oh. The light fixtures.

He showed a picture of the empty living room -- empty except for the light fixtures. He claimed that the presence of light fixtures was somehow further proof of his residency.

I caught part of the hearing, about the time it was reaching the 8 hour mark.

I still think the guy had been sedated prior to his appearance. At the very least, when he finally reached his SUV after 12 hours of being forced to answer questions from the likes of Queen Sister, he probably just went into primal scream mode.
