Chicago Code Reviews

It's kind of funny when a completely fictional character is credited with having more balls than the actual superintendent.

It's hilarious when we all know it's true.

You can use this post for critiques of the show. Frankly, we didn't see much that caught our interest. Whoever was "consulting" on the show missed a lot of opportunities for inside jokes and veiled criticisms which would have endeared it to audiences familiar with Chicago.

Don't be fooled for a single minute that within this next year, if this show can survive that long, that the show will be used by the political scumbags and the media pimps to attempt to make the CPD look like shit, and attempt to put the scumbag politician's agenda of UNION BASHING and PENSION BUSTING front and center in their attempts to get their political statements out to the masses.

Just watch, soon you'll be seeing pension issues and pay rate issues showing up in this show and watch how the show fakes tell everyone how they should just eat it for the sake of the city.

I thought it was entertaining. To the coppers saying, "IT WASN'T REALISTIC WE DON'T DO CAR CHASES, THE SUPT WOULDN'T DO THAT, ETC" It's a fucking TV show. When writing fiction, things are often more sensational then real life. That's why people watch it. If you want realism, watch "COPS".

I was very dissapointed in the premier of "The Code". The" Ride Along" trailer made this show seem like it would be worth watching. I thought it was watered down a bit too much . What cop in this department does not use bad language when working? I give credit to the authenticity of the uniforms, cars, rap sheets and locations. I am hoping that the pilot episode was made just to introduce the audience to the characters and story line, otherwise this show will have a short life.

Maybe J-Fled can lear how to get a set of balls from watching this show.

I was done with this show after the first 5 minutes. First, what exempt that any of us ever knew would thumb their nose at their clout...career suicide anywhere. And the second scene in which the tact copper tells the fleeing felon who is pointing a gun at him(during a high speed chase by the way)that the police will escort him to see his pregnant girlfriend so he can kiss her goodbye before going off to jail is over and above ridiculous. I can only imagine what other clever little vignettes the writers of this show dreamed up for the rest of the hour. Another Hollywood fairy tale. Antiques Roadshow was a better choice last night than the "Chicago Code".

I thought the show was very irresponsible. Most citizens get their ideas about police through these lame police shows on television. There was a scene where the detective pulled up to a stolen car offender, then said offender pulled out a gun and pointed it at the detective and he just laughed and tried to talk the offender out of running. It's bad enough when people hoot and holler after a police shooting and say "why couldn't the po-lice just shoot him in the arm?" Now you have this dumb ass on television chatting it up with a criminal who is pointing a gun at his face. In real life this guy would have been justifiably lit up.

The show wasn't the greatest, the car chase scene at the beginning was really phony & unrealistic for police (to allow some felon to point a gun while trying to talk him into pulling over). Also, am I wrong, or when the camera was panning past the former superintendants did they NOT have a picture of Weis? I saw Hillard, Cline, and it looked like a fictional character in place of Weis.

It's TV, so it's not realistic. I do like the political corruption angle though. Let's see how close they can get to that. Let the Mayor see that THAT is how the country views us now! Way to go Dickie.

Is the Carothers family getting royalties on this? If they put an inept family member from the bad alderman's family on the job I will laugh my ass off.

Seeing “Superintendent” Jennifer Beals playing cop out on the street makes this a pretend show for sure.

I’m beyond skeptical that they will mirror Chicago cops and show the Cook County Court system the way it is. The show looks glitzy and the cops are too pretty.

What I think is funny is the opening scene turns out to be a police chase. When in reality the Department just started the E-Learning training of the "balancing act" to test all members on what are the only reasons for a valid chase. And we all know in this department we are not allowed to chase anyone anymore. But remember this is TELEVISION and we work in smoke and mirrors How many police vehicles were involved in this chase and who took over control of this chase???? Get real

Thought it was rather weak. Not sure why it's getting such good reviews. It certainly isn't The Wire and for that matter, it certainly isn't The Shield.

A murder right next to Buckingham Fountain? Sure, if it's the Taste of Chicago. But 2 people laying side-by-side perfectly laid out? No.

The main character has trouble hiding his Australian accent.

Since when did detectives get involved in high speed chases?

The only reason while I'll keep watch is because it's always "cool" seeing your home town on national television.

Other than that it's pretty bad.

The opening scene was in my old district at 58 & Prairie. The chase under the 63rd. street El tracks was a joke. Point a gun at me you will be the last person you see. The bad guy kneeling down at 63rd. & King proposing to the women what a laugh.

On the positive I did like seeing the streets of Chicago. I'm sick of seeing New York, Miami & LA.

I dislike cop shows because they are grossly inaccurate, almost to the point of insult. The public has no clue to how the criminal justice system works, or how police departments run. It's bad enough that public ignorance has such influence on public policy, but cranking out this type of trash is salt on the wounds.

The world would be a better place if people stopped thinking CSI is real.

Now this show... holy wow. Might as well have thrown in some space ships, aliens, and laser guns to make it interesting because it sure as hell ain't true

I was a fan of "The Shield", even though as usual the writers portrayed most of the cops as psychos the cops arrested a lot of bad guys and handed out street justice sort of like Dirty Harry on steroids and crank.

I understand that this show portrays the administration as corrupt and the cops as heroes. Sounds more correct.

I was very, disappointed with the program. I was expecting a little more reality.
The lead male character was presented as some sort of super cop.
He made his own rules, and traveled the city at whim. No one was good enough to be his partner. He only took a hour break to have sex with his girlfriend. He never changed his shirt and tie through the entire program. I suspect in real life, this guy would come across as a real ass hole.
I don't know about you guys, but if someone is pointing a gun out the window, and my partner tells me to pull along side, so he can talk to him, I'm getting rid of him as a partner, he's not getting rid of me.

great to see politicians portrayed as greedy scum , which is true.

Simply understand that it is entertainment for the masses and not necessarily for the Police. For instance, RE: NCIS, could there really be a Navy man murdered EVERY week? REALLY? It's just television!

I do like the fact that corrupt politicians are getting some serious play here, though. Of course, the Daley Crime Family will probably get the show shut down or put on hiatus within a week or so. I wonder if the producers have gotten the customary death threats yet from "friends of the Mayor". Maybe the Mayor's Office of Special Events will have the production company's permits pulled or something.

"It's kind of funny when a completely fictional character is credited with having more balls than the actual superintendent."

...And a female character at that.

I wonder how Weiss feels about losing out to a girl.

The show is billed as "filmed on location in Chicago." I bet that the conslutant acts more like a censor: Don't do that, or we revoke your production permit.

It would have been better if they had assembled a library of establishing shots and backgrounds, and then done the actual filming elsewhere, relatively free of constraint.

There is one scene, though, that addressed one of my politically-incorrect sore spots:

A rather slight female officer, Vonda Wysocki (played by Devin Kelley) is overpowered by a bigger, stronger, male suspect, and for second, finds herself on the floor, looking up in terror at her attacker, until her male partner intervenes. Granted that this arises here because of bad tactics on her part, it's still a welcome exception to the rule. Far too many shows portray female characters as nigh invulnerable in hand-to-hand combat against male opponents, which I regard as a dangerous example for female viewers. Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) of another Fox show, Bones, is perhaps the worst repeat offender here.

That "consultant" should be ashamed of himself for being a part of this garbage. Its BS like this that the public watches and then thinks that its ok to point a gun at a copper because rather than shooting the offender, the cop will try to open up a dialog with him. Why even have a consultant, the only thing they got right was the wardrobe.

The show started off with a 10 car vehicle chase (that included a helicopter) where the "hero rebel detective" (whos pet peeve is cursing) is late to it and gets in front by driving 80 mph through a grass lot and then drives along side the offender who points a gun at him. After retreating, the "hero detective" tells his driver to go back along side so he can talk to the offender (while still having a gun pointed at the detectives face) and is able to strike a deal to end the chase (all of which was over a stolen vehicle). The rest of the show was downhill from there (including the "hero detective" being able to sniff out an undercover PO (who has been working in the irish mob for a year) in a matter of hours. It also includes a supernintendo that has years of street experience as a worker and cares about the working coppers. Pure fantasy, every last bit of it.

This is dangerous television because the public (the ones we deal with anyway) seems to have a hard time distinguishing tv fantasy from reality and may lead to some problems.

I also do not like them using our fallen officers (memorial and stars @ HQ), it just doesnt sit right.

Start with the person who signed off on this underlings firing. Its embarassing. The queen of hearts, clueless, stuttering byrne, has to go. It was the pilot. Sometimes they're rough around the edges.

They used the city to great advantage and it looked beautiful, but the writing left a lot to be desired.

One more chance. If episode two isn't a lot better, I'll pass. They seem really confused on how they want to write the supe.

Funny thing is, I had someone in MY class who insisted she'd be the first female supe. Even though she's off the job right now, she might still pull it off. She hooked up with some of the most powerful politicians in the city pretty early and has never broken those ties. THAT's the Chicago way.

The show was more like a comedy than anything. Several family members watched it with me and we got a lot of laughs. Whoever the copper was that consulted the producers gave them some bad advise. First, what a TERRIBLE and far fetched opening. They should have had the coppers driving the Bat Mobile instead. During a car chase(in an unmarked as the lead car) they pull up next to the bad guy who then points his gun at the coppers, who never even draw their weapons, and then they proceed to have a man to man conversation while driving with a weapon pointed at them. The copper then takes bad guy to his baby momma and then dumps his partner for using a naughty word. DUMB!

Second, no Supt. or any boss investigates crime or does interviews. Third, any boss that goes after corruption in chicago would be removed immediately. Hell, the Feds don't even do it. Also funny to see the tough guy copper bossing people around of equal rank. I was kinda embarrassed by the show and give it one season. They should have took some tips from the HBO show "The Wire."

I felt the character Vonda Wysocki played by Devin Kelly was weak. She takes it upon herself to go in the piolt espisode to run after an 300 lb black man all by herself.....Please---- Not real!!!As far as Jennifer Beals she portrays the real arrogrant character of Superintendent. Not too police friendly in real life--- Didn't want to sign an autograph or take pictures with the "Real Police"

My two major gripes with the show was that:
1. It didn't show the true bureaucracy of the department. Sure we see Beals' pretty face the whole time, but we never see the deputy sups, the chiefs, the deputy chiefs or the many layers that gum up the works.
2. I didn't buy the scene where the two coppers are shot. Doesn't every Sup have at least five coppers with him at all times?

That many P.O.'s working the street at one time..you have got to be kidding me!

The only two accurate parts were the sh*theads applauding the gangbanger as he proposed to his baby mama (because that was a real feel good moment) and the big screen tv crack.

Also, gotta live how overly politically correct the show is trying to be by pretty much having all the criminals (at least major ones) be white. I would've like some low level gangbanger to have been the hitman, and would've had no problem accepting the white guy ordering the hit.

And the whole Grant Park thing, how many cameras has Da Mayo put downtown? The dialogue was pretty horrible too. They must have the policy group as the consultants if they thought this was good. But reading other comments a lot of people loved it. This episode was filmed a long time ago though so hopefully it will improve.

THUMBS DOWN..... Its no NYPD BLUE which I thought depicted more real life true to reality feel to it. After watching the Code last night I thought it was a joke that the so called Area looked like it belonged in L.A. If the creator of The Shield spent all last summer filming here, I'd hate to see what the rest of the season brings. I dont see it as being a show that will run as long as The Shield and definately no where near N.Y.P.D. Blue .

Thumbs Down for this long anticipated letdown.

It even dragged for a bit there and it was only a 1 hour premier, can you imagine if it was 2 hours like so many other shows when they begin. I'M DISSAPOINTED

OH BTW THE Only thing I thought was Great was when the Superintendant- who by the way came up through the ranks returned fire vs running away-eventhough her driver was shot. our so called super would not have even been in any part of Austin or Humboldt Park (coward)

'Off-topic, and I apologize, but I'm looking forward to discussion of CBS's show Chicago Cop here on SCC more than anywhere else. In fact, I'm looking forward to SCC's comments, if any, almost more than the show itself.'

First of all, it's not a CBS show, it's being shown on Fox.
And it's not called "Chicago Cop", it's called "Chicago Code." And if any of you saw the first episode Monday night, you're probably still laughing at that shit.
It has got to be one of the all time WORST cop series shows to ever grace non-cable TV. As great and exciting as "The Shield" was, this one ISN'T (although it is produced by the same person). Boring.
Major roles totally miscast. A female police Supt. who says tough words, but doesn't intimidate anyone. A Detective who 'doesn't like profanity.' And says this over. and over. and over. A double murder near the Buckingham Fountain that looks like a photo shoot for models. I could go on, but you get the picture. I don't know that detective who works out of Area 5 who is a paid consultant for this show, but the best thing he can do to salvage what's left of his reputation as a 'paid expert' in police matters is to have his name immediately removed from the credits. Yes, it's that bad. Embarrassingly bad.

2/08/2011 01:26:00 AM

I agree. The amazingly silly opening set the stage immediately and it got worse from there. I can't believe a "so called" real copper advised these people. I laughed and laughed during the show partly cause it was so dumb, but also out of embarrassment. The opening could be the dumbest opening to a show since Jerry Springer. Where is the mayor in this show? Also liked the part where there Alderman has "his girl" lick his ear. DUMB DUMB AND DUMBER! One season only.

I was reading a piece in today's Trib that mentioned the actor playing Det. Wysocki working with a dialogue coach. I'd give his Chicago accent a B.

Thought the show made great use of locations. The plot was a bit farfetched at times. Needs a little work, but I think it's better than average. Has potential.

The only police show I liked was the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia production of Lethal Weapon 5. But seriously, I've got a question for everyone. Based on the sheer volume of stupid police shows on tv, I have to assume that most of the public loves shows like the upcoming Chicago Code. My question is, why do so many people LOVE police shows but HATE the real police? I had a conversation about this the other day, and no one had a real answer. Even further perplexing are the police shows where the law enforcement characters are breaking the law in hundreds of ways. People LOVE to watch shows about dirty cops, but god forbid this same person sees you talking on your cell phone while driving a squad car. You want to see a face filled with real HATRED? Double park your squad car while you take a few minutes to get a cup of coffee. Observe the HATRED on peoples faces at the minor infraction. These same people will cheer a fictional cop on tv beating the living piss out of an arrestee. I don't understand it and I can't explain it. Does anyone have any theories? Sorry Fox, I have no plans to watch your new stupid ass show.

My wife and I watched the show for about the first 20 minutes....and we laughed at how awfully bad it is!
My wife isn't the police, but even SHE knew a lot of the stuff she saw there was just plain stupid...and reckless.
And stuff that a real cop would never do....like drive neck and neck with a banger WHO IS POINTING A GUN AT YOU. Like a Police Supt. going to see a gang leader in County Jail. Like a female PO chasing a man wanted on a warrant into of an abandoned house, ALONE.
I only hope the rookies in the Academy aren't watching this mess and getting any ideas from this show about how street policing is done. It could get someone hurt, or killed. If you want to watch a cop show that is anything close to reality, 'Southland' is back on TNT, but that's about it. 'Blue Bloods' is decent, but every episode shows the entire family working aspects of the same damn case every week, and the writers need to stop that line of thinking before that show gets tossed off the air too. But Blue Bloods has a good cast, and shows some promise. This new Chicago Code show will be gone rather quickly off the air, I think, as it should!

I've been in a few aldermen's offices, and none look anything close to the office of the alderman portrayed by actor Delroy Lindo. They must have used the office of a lawyer in one of those prestigious old law firms, like Mayer-Brown, for that scene. Saw a lot on that show that was complete BS, car chases with guns pointed out of cars, homicide victims laid out by Buckingham Fountain, just a lot of dumb shit. I feel sorry for the Det. who is a paid consultant for this show, looks like the writers did 'Chicago Code' the typical (dumbass) "Hollywood way."

Taking into consideration that it's fiction, I'll give it a couple of episodes to flesh itself out.

Still...Would any cop pull up along side a car they were chasing and allow a perp (oops, I forgot, perp isn't a Chicago term) to point a gun at them? No matter how well they knew him?

That was one of several ridculous scenarios that were presented, the main one being the police superintendent going after a powerful alderman.

If they can layer in some nice plot twists over the next few episodes, it might be worth watching.

But The Wire this is not.

Haven't seen it -- don't watch much of the open sewer that is TV "entertainment" -- but my guess is that it's a Standard Cop Show made by people who aren't from around here, with Chicago backgrounds, paint jobs, and patches plugged in in the appropriate places.

One theme, and the backgrounds are dropped into place or hoisted out of the way to provide some variety, like stage sets.

Look! A "new" show!

Now that the Cook County State Attorney’s Office said they will cut prosecutors which parallels the Chicago Police Department and every Police Department in Cook County if not the State of Illinois. The politicians that have wasted and stolen tax money over the years have them now calling for more police as in the mayoral election. But where does this money come from. When your car is stolen, when you are robbed or burglarized, when you are cheated out of money who is going to make the arrest? If an Officer. when one is found, does make an arrest who will prosecute the offender? Is there competent Officers to put a case together for court? Is there competent prosecutors on staff to persecute a criminal case? This Mayor doesn’t care, he has a dozen bodyguards with him all of the time besides if he feel insecure he can take all of his heavily armed bodyguards to his getaway in Michigan. Will he and his Family send postcards to the citizens or should I say victims back in the City of Chicago? Jody Weis says crime is down. Why aren’t the citizens doing back flips in the streets if this is true. Ask the last guy who had his head split open in a robbery if crime is down, ask the last girl who was beaten and raped if crime is down. Weis is using the same statistical juggling that has been used for years.
There is one answer maybe not the final answer but a start. The Constitution, which does overrule that Mayor, was written for citizens of the United States of America and to tell the Government how to treat its citizens. Furthermore the Second Amendment was written to help U.S. citizens defend ourselves first of all from an out of control government or maybe out of control citizens like we find in cities and towns everywhere. I know citizens are not going out and stock up on guns and ammo like just after the most recent Presidential election. Some will be satisfied with hiding in a dark corner of their basement chewing on their shivering fingernails and wait for the non-existing police to respond to our calls for help. This is not what was meant by living the American Dream. If City of Chicago, County of Cook and State of Illinois are not and cannot afford to protect us then they are worthless when we come under attack and are in fear of our lives of bodily harm. Citizens of Chicago learn to take aim, control your breathing and squeeze.

Bring back "Barney Miller."

They could use the old scripts, updated for 2011. It is the best cop show of all time.

The show stunk. All Hollywood drama & Hype intended to make cops look bad. Having a hot young brunette play the Super was about as realistic as having it played by a retired FBI suit who never wore a uniform. Umm...nevermind..

2/08/2011 07:36:00 AM

This is being peddled as reality. Hence, the identification with the Chicago Police Department. It's called a reality ground in the business. If the producers were only concerned with a piece fictional nonsense, they would not have requested permission from the Department to portray themselves as the real police. By the way, the show stinks.

This show SUCKS, and not very well at that !!!

Throwing rotten fruit and vegetables !! :-)

The folks doing this show haven't a clue, and the Sgt who is consulting with them how to make it good must be a no working clout baby !!!!!

Michael Mann needs to get involved if they want to save this show.

Is the Wysocki character being against the use of profanity going to upset people on the department who will think that it is a shot against law enforcement?

2/08/2011 09:04:00 AM

No. It is simply a way to justify NOT using profanity on regular TV...remember, this isn't cable, so they can't swear. I think the show addressed this quite well. To the rest of you.. IT'S A TV SHOW!!! Jeez. Barney Miller is my favorite, and that's not realistic either... TJ Hooker was fun... Dragnet was awesome.... and cheesy...and fake. relax. It's tv.

If they showed the Henny-Pennys, Burger-Queen, P.A.U., 3-M's, J-fled & all the other clowns, idiots & morons this Dept. has promoted on the " earned not given " criteria, this would be a COMEDY, not a supposed drama .
I'll stick w/ Mayberry, R.F.D.
Barney, Gomer & Floyd the barber would be a more accurate reflection of C.P
D. bloated " command " structure.

I was going to explain why I thought this show totally sucked after the first 5 minutes but after reading everyeone else's opinion, it was already said.

The ONLY part of the show I liked was the scenes of Chicago. Nothing else was realistic.

The lead character didn't like profanity, thought dead woman Audrey Hepburn was sexy, and wouldn't ride with a Cubs fan. What cop do you know who is like that? Audrey "No body" Hepburn? Get over White Sox baseball. You're a cop, a grown man.

If I fucked Audrey Hepburn I would roll over in bed and break every bone in her body. I stopped reading box scores and started reading financial pages when I was 18 years old. This asshole wouldn't ride with me.

It's pretend. Fantasy. Entertainment. I took the show for exactly what it was. A way to waste an hour and watch for friends I know and the places I work on TV. In that respect I enjoyed it. Was it realistic? Who cares? It's TV.

First off I thought I was watching a movie about Mayor Daley, what superintendent has a lead and tail car? I know commissioner Kelly of New York City Police has a big detail but there are constant threats against him, I'm not going to be critical of anyone, but the cop consultant must be young and no experience.

You guys really need to remember this is not a reality show. The Sheild was also not a reality show, but a show based on a police department in California. Everybody loved the Sheild. Do you guys really think that what you do at work everyday is so interesting that people would want to watch you doing it. I know it is interesting but not 24/7. This show is going to be good. Folino is a good guy with good intentions. Some of the comments made make me think that you guys need to watch he show to learn what detectives do. We can go all over the city if we choose, we do have rank and give orders on crime scenes, we do get
in car chases. All I am saying is give the show a chance and remember it is only a show.

The opening scene was in my old district at 58 & Prairie. The chase under the 63rd. street El tracks was a joke. Point a gun at me you will be the last person you see. The bad guy kneeling down at 63rd. & King proposing to the women what a laugh.

I thought it was a pretty decent start...it's intended for the masses not for cpd, jesus. An all powerful corrupt black alderman named ronan gibbons (i'm sure eddie burke got a kick out of that), irish mob, female supt., yeah it's funny but still pretty cool to see chicago instead of new york or la. Do you think the rank and file nypd analyze every fucking thing on law and order?

I saw the show, and its great that we finally have a Chicago show without mountains and palm trees in the background.
This was the pilot eposode, and it was great.
There are 12 more eposodes so there is room to develope the story line and background, so lets give them a break and tell others to watch the show. After all, its
great to see politicians portrayed as greedy scum , which is true.

What cop in this department does not use bad language when working? I give credit to the authenticity of the uniforms, cars, rap sheets and locations.

me... I dont. I have over 200 arrests a year and I dont need to motherF84K everyone. Its not worth it. you can do police work without being a hardass young buck.
