CFD Retro

  • Chicago firefighters and paramedics will get $94 million in back pay dating back to June 30, 2007 — bankrolled by debt likened to “borrowing to pay for last year’s groceries” — thanks to a contract ratified Monday.

“We’re very concerned. It’s enormously expensive to borrow to pay for operating costs. Future taxpayers are gonna have to pay, not only for their own city services but debt on services they did not receive,” said Civic Federation President Laurence Msall.

“It’s similar to borrowing to pay for last year’s groceries. It demonstrates a failure to plan and leave aside adequate funds” for an expense the city knew was coming.

Well gee Larry. If someone, namely Shortshanks, had negotiated in good faith and hadn't delayed countless meetings and truly wanted to wrap things up in a timely manner, then the city wouldn't have been burdened with this completely predictable "expense," the same way it was with the police contract.

Hey, wait, I thought the city's budget allowed for the anticipated raises. No, really; I believe Daley actually talked last year about the budget being set up with additional monies set aside, and budgeted, for the expected raises (it was either us or CFD he was talking about).

But now it's some huge surprise?

Meanwhile at the state level Quinn awarded paid snow days for tens of thousands of state employees for the recent blizzard!

Where did all this money come from?

They got the state tax increases which doesn't even cover their current expense and are acting like our problems are over.

I'm CPD and I'm sorry if this is a little long winded but I'm furious after seeing that interview with Laurence Msall regarding the CFD retro pay. Go to the civic federation's web site and do a little reading. This self appointed self righteous organization is firmly all for "pension reform" regarding police and fire pensions, in fact they don't think it goes far enough. They have the same position as Rahm. We should pay much more. Not one mention of politicians that scam pensions for little or no work. I noticed in his bio on the civic federation web site that Msall was the "Senior Advisor for Economic Development" for George Ryan including a stint with James Thompson. I wonder what kind of pension Msall gets from the state. The bios of the rest of the board of this organization is also interesting.
The unions should have a question for any candidate looking for an endorsement in the future regarding how much they will rely on the civic federation's recommendations. For those readers that are not city employees read their "Civic Federation Position on the Cook County Property Tax System", dated 20 Dec. 2010. It is their tax reform position. Page 6, section 1. Move Toward a Truly Ad Valorem Tax, subsection 1.2 in part reads "Income level is the best criterion to use for property tax relief in order to target it to persons with the least ability to pay. Other criteria such as age, disability, veteran's status, or length of time in the home give relief to some people who have more income than others and are thus not preferred criteria for relief". It also states "The Civic Federation believes that it is very important to minimize Homeowner Exemptions and narrowly target them to the lowest - income Homeowners and Renters". Later "Exemptions should not be granted to Homeowners that have the ability to pay their full Ad Valorem tax ability". Which means what they think your house is worth. Sorry for the length. We have to vote because pols out there listen to organizations like this.

Then settle the goddamned fucking contracts when they expire!

Good for shit City tries to make points out of their own wrongdoing. Again.

It's expensive to put my groceries on my home equity line credit card. THAT'S WHY I DON'T DO IT!

And when I run short, I don't rush out and sell the garage and car and spend the money and then rent them back again.

Daley has run this city like a fucking crack addict runs their life.

And just guess who is going to pay?

rahmbo gets elected and city workers will not receive a pay raise in the next contract.
Most city workers are taking 12 to 24 unpaid vacation days , next contract the police will lose half of the 13 paid holidays and uniform allowance .

the city is broke , at least Chico wants to reduce management in CPD , not the working blue shirts.

vote for Chico

I ALSO am for pension reform. My platform consists of the following:

*** The government MUST fund the pensions as they AGREED to do when the funds were started. NO skipping payments, and when the economy goes South, all of a sudden, it's the fault of the greedy public employees whose pensions are SOOO exorbitant that they are bankrupting the country!

*** The government WILL NOT borrow or utilize in any way monies in or earmarked for the pension funds. Hands off! TOTALLY! I MEAN IT!!!

*** Pension fund Representatives WILL NOT vote to allow relatives of the Mayor or other connected people to invest (aka STEAL) pension monies under a penalty of DEATH (Hauser!).

*** The CITY WIDE Team at FOP nor anyone connected to the police union who are in bed with the Daley Crime Family WILL BE EXCLUDED from having the authority to "forgive" a $23 MILLION payment that the Mayor owed to the Pension Fund (Remember this as you cast your vote for the new union leaders this month!).

*** Exempt members of the Police Department will only be able to collect pensions that are the equivalent of their career service rank. No bigger pensions for political hack exempts.

*** No bigger pensions for Captains since the City has decided that they don't have to pass exams anymore. This rank is essentially another exempt reward for the connected.

*** No bigger pensions for ANYONE who has attained their higher rank through MERIT. This is just another way to push mostly unqualified people up in the Department without having to show on paper, in black and white, what makes them "so SPECIAL" that they MUST BE leaders. If you are merit promoted to Sgt, your pension will be at Patrolman level. Merit promoted to Sgt, Lt, AND exempt (you know who I'm talking about), again, Patrolman pension. It's enough that these merit hacks get the bigger paycheck. They don't need to be raiding the pension, as well. Let them bank some of that exempt salary into an IRA!

*** It WILL BE ILLEGAL for politicians to lie to the public about the above pension manipulations and non-payments by the govt.

The pension reforms I've suggested will go a long way to stabilize the pension fund and keep all of the friends of the politically connected at bay... What do ya think?

Msall DID mention that it wasn't the firefighters that caused this problem, it simply was 'backpay' that the city owed them for not bargaining in a timely manner.
The real problem, he explains, is that the city knowing they would (eventually) have to (back)pay something, put aside absolutely nothing!
Welcome brother firefighters, WE collectively are responsible for all the financial 'short-comings' (no pun intended)in the entire city.
The taxes will have to be raised 66% because of those greedy police and (now) firemen.
Rahm will take the ball and run with that theme.

It doesn't cost extra money to give people a free day off. had it not snowed, they'd have been at work and gotten paid.

More Bad News Lois Lane Maddigan is now trying to over rule the pension board and take away Burge's pension. I love the way the Scum Times says," Shields and the others, all Police Officers voted to allow burge to keep his pension" Fuck you scum times. If that stupid political hack bitch gets away with this it will set precident allowing any retired police officer that commits a crime to lose his or her pension. I am not sticking up for criminals but shit happens, anyone can be a felon if the situation presents itself Agg DUI etc. Does Rostenkowski get a pension? Or the other host of crooked politicians? It seems that every media source and politician except Chico is trying to blame our pensions for all the financial woes facing this city and state. We need our Unions FOP and PBPA to start getting the message out or we are in for a rough ride my friends. Kudos to Mike Shields for standing up to this hack bitch.

Let me kvetch a bit here: I've been taking ten percent pay cuts now for three years. Smaller amounts in prior years. "Furlough" they call it.

There's no God-given right to a raise every year. Much less a retroactive raise for every year your totally broke employer failed to give you a raise.

Man up. Get along on what you've been making. Most everyone else is doing that, or getting along on less.

And quit your bit*hing, or the public will eventually rise up in anger against you. Just wait.

Between CPD and CFD you are looking at, what, about 20,000 employees? Not even. Why are they picking on the two smallest groups? Only because we are the most visual for the public to watch and hate.

CFD & CPD are untouchable
only city jobs that don't buy political fund raiser tickets and no unpaid vacation days

soon chicago will have a privatized fleet ,water department , trade union and garbage pick up

jobs will be offered to current employees but at a lower pay scale

News item today says City's idea of unpaid furlough days has cost the city more than it anticipated and saved less.

turns out those unpaid furlough days do not impact anyone's pension. if you work one day in a given month you get credit for the whole month. And by not working you don't put that money into the fund but get credit for that month.

The City, however, is supposed to contribute to the fund but in this case the City has given itself another pension fund "holiday" and has worsened the pension underfunding they themselves created.

Great idea by richy eh? Make them take unpaid days off and then go deeper into debt by running up more unfunded pension liabilities.

Imagine how many thousands upon thousands of unpaid furlough days now must be made up by those pension funds, all without one cent going in by the employee or the employer.

Nice going daley, you fucking thief moron. He's digging that hole deeper all the time. And he is still bleating like a stuck sheep about Taste of Chicago being free and about food, except the City doesn't want to pay.

Let's see, I have a private company and I am a concert and event promoter. Daley wants me to put on an event, for free, not charge admission and try to make money. Exactly how would that be done?

I've got it!!!

LAZ Parking Taste of Chicago!!!

With all the millions/billions being made by LAZ Daley and his bro's can lean on them to pay for the Taste of Chicago!

Brilliant move Mayor, absolutely brilliant! And LAZ can charge whatever they want for the parking. How about $20.00 an hour? That ought to cover it all right.

Rostenkowski was given a full pardon by Bill Clinton as Clinton was leaving office and thus was eligible for full benefits.

Except now Rostenkowski is dead and by virtue of no longer being alive, is not eligible for any pension payments. Someone better check if Rosty's pension checks are still being cashed. I wouldn't put it past him.

Hey 9:43am. Bullshit on your three consecutive 10% paycuts. Name any other profession besides police, fire that doesn't have a private sector option. If you are a white collar worker for this city, you did so not for the sake of public service, you did it because you weren't that ambitious to be bothered with all the cut throat private sector world. We should be treated differently because our health and lives are at stake and in order to perform our job we have to work for a government agency. So, kindly GFY and be careful what you wish for.

Congratulations, people like you are the 'sheeple' that Rhambo have successfully fed their shit.
We'll work for whatever we (legitimately) bargain for and/or are 'promised.'
Don't change paddles (or rules) mid stream and blame that large hole in the boat on the poor guy that has to oar.
Blame it on the person who created that gap.
In case you're too stupid to figure it out...
Former=Daley
Future= Rhambo

Baaaye-Baaaaye!
