More Tahoe Follies

Funny stuff from Channel 7. They even get a couple of lies from various department talking heads:
  • This week's blizzard was the first major test of Chicago's new police patrol fleet.

In this Intelligence Report: how the Chevy Tahoes did and what one mayoral candidate is saying after helping to push a police SUV from some deep snow.

Chicago police officials spent tens of millions of dollars the last two years replacing most of their aging Ford patrol cars with Chevy Tahoe SUVs.

The old Crown Victoria sedans were popular with many officers but terrible in the snow because they were rear-wheel drive cars.
Popular because they were capable vehicles. And you could push a CV out of the snow if you got stuck. You need three cops and a mayoral candidate to push a Tahoe it seems.
  • On Friday, a Chicago police spokesman disputes that, saying that only 25 Tahoes from a total fleet of 3,000 vehicles needed towing during the storm.

"In some conditions you could be driving an M-1 Abrams tank and you're not going to move forward on this," said Chicago Police Department Superintendent Jody Weis.

Dispatchers were making announcements on Citywide all day and all night that if you were stuck, there was no R-Service and tow trucks had no E.T.A. That probably means of the hundreds of stuck Tahoes, officers did what they normally do and dig out, enlist help, flag down passing tows, etc. We took the initiative. And for our troubles, J-Fled claims only 25 Tahoes needed tows? What a bunch of double-speaking bullshit.

Rahm made some political hay, too:
  • One of the SUVs, however, did get stuck, and Rahm Emanuel helped push it out. If elected mayor, he says the police fleet may change.

"We have snowstorms. It is the City of Chicago. It did not make sense to me," Emanuel said.

[...] Emanuel said as mayor he would get rid of the police Procurement Director who did the SUV deal.
We're pretty sure there was a political stink over the SUV contract being awarded to a suburban dealer rather than a city one. With all the crap Shortshanks spouts about patronizing the city and keeping his indentured workforce close by, you'd think that he would have wanted to keep that contract around here.

Anyway, always fun on the political side of stuff.

I like the Tahoes, I don't give a shit if they get stuck, the Crown Vicks got stuck. A lot of getting stuck with 2WD vehicles is how you drive and where you go and don't go. I don't go on side streets with 20 inches of snow, I walk in.

This is a pain, I know but I carry two 80# bags of sand in my own truck, I put them in the back of the Tahoe each shift. Helps traction. Then I put them back at the end of shift.

I don't ever want to go back to a car type vehicle.

I was around in 99, I had an assignment to go get stuck Ford Crown Vicks the day after that snow. We went out with shovels and two man cars and rounded up the Fords from where the previous crew left them after getting stuck.

More than half the problem is the people who got stuck didn't have experience driving in heavy snow and just put the pedal to the floor.

I learned how to drive in snow in 1967. I rarely get stuck any more, be careful of where you put the vehicle and the rest comes from experience.

We never had 4WD before. Never. No need for 4WD for the entire fleet. One or two per district, that ought to do it. One snowstorm like this per 20 years doesn't mean all police cars need 4WD.

Now if they were to come up with an All-WD police package, that's a good compromise.

Good AC is more important than 4WD.

J-Fled is not as popular as he thought he was.It is now clear that emmanual thinks he is an idiot as well.J-Fled is a victim of his own criminal ambition. He was the first Police Superintendant in the history of the position that truly thought he was an endeared elected official. He took every opportunity to seek the public limelight and take credit for every miniscual downtick in the crime stats that he and his team of suckups could manufacture. This "public persona strategy" bit him square in the ass. Manufacture they did... by reclassifying crime and not telling the public the real reason crime went down ON PAPER and not in reality. The shear lack of police. He even took credit for crime levels during the blizzard. There is now no rock left for this idiot to hide under. Everyone knows he is a fool. Now comes the tahoe decision. A true stroke of strokeness from a true stroke.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Yes rear wheel drive vehicles get stuck in snow.

Did CPD like the front wheel drive Impalas? No

Is there a city dealer of chevrolets that even tried to get the contract? No. Was there anything dirty about that contract? No

Is there a fourwheel drive police vehicle available? No

Would the four wheel version of the tahoe be as easy to drive to a hot call? No, Check the MSP test results.

Were tahoes ordered with locking differentials, not available on the Vic and useful for getting through deep snow and ice if driven properly? Yes

Will there be a push to try the fourwheel drive Explorer police vehicle next year when it is available? Yes

I pushed 6 squads that were stuck during the blizzard with the snow plow along Michigan ave. 2 cars and 4 Tahoes.
One Tahoe was so stuck on 14th street that I had to clear a path around it and behind it. Im, working with a 12 foot plow attatched to a 16ton dump truck.

J-Fled is flat out lying to the media. All the Tahoes were getting stuck on side streets. In fact, most P.O.'s, including my partner & I, parked on main plowed streets & got out & walked 2 or 3 blocks to our jobs, because the Tahoes wouldn't make it on side streets. P.O.'s were digging each other out all night Tues and all day Wend, & some kind citizens also helped in certain situations (I know, they helped me). These Tahoes are a complete joke. A simple 4x4 vehicle would have made it through this snow. I know, because I had no problem getting around outside of work for 3 days with my 4x4 truck. Once again, J-Fled drops the ball with the 2 wheel drive Tahoes.

Aren't pursuit-rated Tahoes only 2wd? I thought the 4wd Tahoes were command only - no pursuit rating on them from GM. Are there any 4wd pursuit-rated police vehicles yet, or is the new Explorer/Taurus package going to be the first?

4wd Tahoes are electronically governed to top out at around 100 mph anyway...

Which is plenty fast enough for a 3 ton, over-tired and way under-braked vehicle.

Fuck 140 mph capability. anybody trying to go that fast in an suv is a menace. We'll take foul weather capability over chasing any day of the week.
