More Tahoe Follies
Funny stuff from Channel 7. They even get a couple of lies from various department talking heads:
- This week's blizzard was the first major test of Chicago's new police patrol fleet.
In this Intelligence Report: how the Chevy Tahoes did and what one mayoral candidate is saying after helping to push a police SUV from some deep snow.
Chicago police officials spent tens of millions of dollars the last two years replacing most of their aging Ford patrol cars with Chevy Tahoe SUVs.
The old Crown Victoria sedans were popular with many officers but terrible in the snow because they were rear-wheel drive cars.
Popular because they were capable vehicles. And you could push a CV out of the snow if you got stuck. You need three cops and a mayoral candidate to push a Tahoe it seems.
On Friday, a Chicago police spokesman disputes that, saying that only 25 Tahoes from a total fleet of 3,000 vehicles needed towing during the storm.
"In some conditions you could be driving an M-1 Abrams tank and you're not going to move forward on this," said Chicago Police Department Superintendent Jody Weis.
Dispatchers were making announcements on Citywide all day and all night that if you were stuck, there was no R-Service and tow trucks had no E.T.A. That probably means of the hundreds of stuck Tahoes, officers did what they normally do and dig out, enlist help, flag down passing tows, etc. We took the initiative. And for our troubles, J-Fled claims only 25 Tahoes needed tows? What a bunch of double-speaking bullshit.
Rahm made some political hay, too:
Rahm made some political hay, too:
One of the SUVs, however, did get stuck, and Rahm Emanuel helped push it out. If elected mayor, he says the police fleet may change.
"We have snowstorms. It is the City of Chicago. It did not make sense to me," Emanuel said.
[...] Emanuel said as mayor he would get rid of the police Procurement Director who did the SUV deal.
We're pretty sure there was a political stink over the SUV contract being awarded to a suburban dealer rather than a city one. With all the crap Shortshanks spouts about patronizing the city and keeping his indentured workforce close by, you'd think that he would have wanted to keep that contract around here.
Anyway, always fun on the political side of stuff.
Anyway, always fun on the political side of stuff.

Why tell the truth. The city never has in the past.
Rahm Emanuel was heard exclaiming as he helped push the Tahoe out of the deep snow, "Thank God, I don't live here."
Heard it on the radio so it must be true.
That was nothing more than a photo op for Stubby.
Look at the ground in the photo = not that much snow!
Do any of you ACTUALLY think he helped a copper in a Tahoe get out of a snow drift?
Is it not true that these Tahoes are also rear wheel drive only?
I really wish I was that stuck copper getting pushed out by Rahm... as soon as you start to move, gun that sucker and spray slop all over that rat bastard...
I like the Tahoes, I don't give a shit if they get stuck, the Crown Vicks got stuck. A lot of getting stuck with 2WD vehicles is how you drive and where you go and don't go. I don't go on side streets with 20 inches of snow, I walk in.
This is a pain, I know but I carry two 80# bags of sand in my own truck, I put them in the back of the Tahoe each shift. Helps traction. Then I put them back at the end of shift.
I don't ever want to go back to a car type vehicle.
I was around in 99, I had an assignment to go get stuck Ford Crown Vicks the day after that snow. We went out with shovels and two man cars and rounded up the Fords from where the previous crew left them after getting stuck.
More than half the problem is the people who got stuck didn't have experience driving in heavy snow and just put the pedal to the floor.
I learned how to drive in snow in 1967. I rarely get stuck any more, be careful of where you put the vehicle and the rest comes from experience.
We never had 4WD before. Never. No need for 4WD for the entire fleet. One or two per district, that ought to do it. One snowstorm like this per 20 years doesn't mean all police cars need 4WD.
Now if they were to come up with an All-WD police package, that's a good compromise.
Good AC is more important than 4WD.
To make the Tahoes work in snow, the fattest partner should ride in the back to put wieght over the drive wheels.
"The old Crown Victoria sedans were popular with many officers but terrible in the snow because they were rear-wheel drive cars."
Ummmmmm so are the Tahoes. Seriously, who feeds them this stuff!!
"In this Intelligence Report:"
what a fucking oxymoron that is.
"In some conditions you could be driving an M-1 Abrams tank and you're not going to move forward on this," said Chicago Police Department Superintendent Jody Weis.
uh, jody, bite me.
Chalkie
Why you would get an SUV without 4 wheel drive is beyond my comprehension.
[...] Emanuel said as mayor he would get rid of the police Procurement Director who did the SUV deal.
here come the Yugoes.
Anyway, always fun on the political side of stuff.
this is not 'I'm mad as HELL and I'm not going to take it anymore'.
A few years before Weis selected the Tahoe, it was evaluated. It was recommended NOT TO USE.
Here ya' go, check it out...

Great shot of the Tahoe!
I know over two days the Tahoe I was in got stuck four times. Never went over the radio saying we were stuck, we just pushed/shoveled it out ourselves. So ours wasn't counted as part of the 25, so now the number moves to 29.
J-Fled is not as popular as he thought he was.It is now clear that emmanual thinks he is an idiot as well.J-Fled is a victim of his own criminal ambition. He was the first Police Superintendant in the history of the position that truly thought he was an endeared elected official. He took every opportunity to seek the public limelight and take credit for every miniscual downtick in the crime stats that he and his team of suckups could manufacture. This "public persona strategy" bit him square in the ass. Manufacture they did... by reclassifying crime and not telling the public the real reason crime went down ON PAPER and not in reality. The shear lack of police. He even took credit for crime levels during the blizzard. There is now no rock left for this idiot to hide under. Everyone knows he is a fool. Now comes the tahoe decision. A true stroke of strokeness from a true stroke.
took me 3hrs to get my suv unstuck...all bs...give me a Ford Explorer 4x4 anyday.
Ever heard of chains?
Granted, you won't be using them in a high speed pursuit, but there isn't going to be any.
Think of al the money they would save if they went through Ford or GM Fleet sales. The next car will probably be the all wheel drive Tauras.
A Vic with a Trac-lok rear end, good tires, and a good driver will get thru snow.
These Tahoes, ehh... whats the sense of ordering these things?
Should have ordered the last batch of Vics before they cease production, and then start ordering the new Caprices.
The M-1 Abrams tank ranges in weight from 60 to 68.7 tons. It has a 1500 horse power gas turbine engine and is capable of "engaging the enemy in any weather". Your right J-Fled, no way could a tank that size get through a 5 foot snow drift. Would you please just shut the fuck up and go away allready!!! Thank God we only have to put up with this idiot for 3 more weeks.
All you have to do is look at what j-fled drives. Ford 4X4 expedition with after market upgraded tires on it. Now I ask you, do you think that the official CPD comments about the Tahoes are bullshit?
Advantage Chevy in hodgkins by countryside Illinois got the huge contract! Advantage is a female black owned dealership connected to Chicago black ministers wonder who got that kickback?
I still won't vote for "they get what they put into pension" Rahm.
Wrong, wrong, wrong. Yes rear wheel drive vehicles get stuck in snow.
Did CPD like the front wheel drive Impalas? No
Is there a city dealer of chevrolets that even tried to get the contract? No. Was there anything dirty about that contract? No
Is there a fourwheel drive police vehicle available? No
Would the four wheel version of the tahoe be as easy to drive to a hot call? No, Check the MSP test results.
Were tahoes ordered with locking differentials, not available on the Vic and useful for getting through deep snow and ice if driven properly? Yes
Will there be a push to try the fourwheel drive Explorer police vehicle next year when it is available? Yes
I call BS on Rahm helping to push out a tahoe. Lets hear from the officer who he helped.
Yo' chalkie, wuz you in Youngstown, OH. by any chance? I'm axin' cuz' at a frat house in Youngstown State U. there was shooting, 1 dead, & 11 wounded. I axe' cuz' I know things were kinda slow here. If so, as always, nice work ...hey somebody gots' to do it.
ABC7 forgot to mention that we cannot chase anything with a Tahoe. So where does the "Police Package" come into play mr j-fled?
I call bullshit... the 2wheel drive only is bullshit for the snow. Theyre so heavy they get stuck quicker than cars.
I pushed 6 squads that were stuck during the blizzard with the snow plow along Michigan ave. 2 cars and 4 Tahoes.
One Tahoe was so stuck on 14th street that I had to clear a path around it and behind it. Im, working with a 12 foot plow attatched to a 16ton dump truck.
J-Fled is flat out lying to the media. All the Tahoes were getting stuck on side streets. In fact, most P.O.'s, including my partner & I, parked on main plowed streets & got out & walked 2 or 3 blocks to our jobs, because the Tahoes wouldn't make it on side streets. P.O.'s were digging each other out all night Tues and all day Wend, & some kind citizens also helped in certain situations (I know, they helped me). These Tahoes are a complete joke. A simple 4x4 vehicle would have made it through this snow. I know, because I had no problem getting around outside of work for 3 days with my 4x4 truck. Once again, J-Fled drops the ball with the 2 wheel drive Tahoes.
Aren't pursuit-rated Tahoes only 2wd? I thought the 4wd Tahoes were command only - no pursuit rating on them from GM. I know Ford makes a police-package Expedition that would have 4wd but that thing is a lot bigger than a Tahoe. Are there any 4wd pursuit-rated police vehicles yet, or is the new Explorer/Taurus package going to be the first?
Take the traction control off stupid
WRT: ""In some conditions you could be driving an M-1 Abrams tank and you're not going to move forward on this," said Chicago Police Department Superintendent Jody Weis."
==============
...and in some conditions you can spend millions of dollars to install voo-doo computer crime prediction equipment even using a Cray XT5 Jaguar supercomputer and you're not going to predict any crimes..."and move forward on this"
Let's have a forensic accounting and cost/benefit analyst on the crystal ball and it's gazers and see where the money would be better spent.
However. If your politicians have the political will they can use these crisis's to extort more taxes from the general public and the politicians paycheck.
Just exactly what are the conditions that would stop an M-1 Abrams tank and is J-fled the new authority on them?
Who's requesting the M-1 Abrams anyway? Anyone? anyone? Bueller? <>
Ridiculous MBA leadership nonsense designed to make a request for 4 WD vehicles so people can do their jobs sound silly.
No-one is requesting tanks...yet.
Unless maybe it's someone on the 3rd in Englewood eh? And if they were there's probable a good reason for it.
One of the SUVs, however, did get stuck, and Rahm Emanuel helped push it out. If elected mayor, he says the police fleet may change.
Knowing this JO, we will be on bicycles like all the rural cops in China.
I love the tahoe! I bought one for my personal vehicle. I didn't get four wheel drive either.
The Tahoes did a fine job. Here's one of the Mayor's volunteers on the scene to help out. :)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kenbocchino/5410306734/
Those Tahoes are shitty when drving in the snow. Why didn't the media ask J-Fuck if his vehicle is 4x4? HMMMMMMMMMMMM.....
You know the vehicle, the one with the really nice tires that were made to handle that type of weather.
I am so tired of this department and the bullshit. Where is FOP calling J-Fuck out on that one? Or residency? Could you imagine if something really serious hit the city- we don't even have enough radios on new years eve!!!!
FUCKING JOKE!! Surrounded by the dumbest people in charge and the most racist jagoffs in the world- and all with the PC idea that police are bad and bad guys really are good- FUCK IT!!!
"Emanuel said as mayor he would get rid of the police Procurement Director who did the SUV deal."
Five or six sacks of tube sand in back might help. What'll this do?
*
Idiot.
Who is really in "charge" ? the Sgt we have to deal with to get an extra car and who runs CPD Fleet or the people she has to deal with at Fleet Management? So far they are both useless!!!!
why do we have R-Service? They come out and tell you you need to down the car? WTF IS GOING ON HERE?
With all the crap Shortshanks spouts about patronizing the city and keeping his indentured workforce close by, you'd think that he would have wanted to keep that contract around here.
*************************************
Since when does daley honor contracts ? When the contracts are with "connected" cronies !!
Fuck daley, Fuck "Mellon Head" Weis and all his Fed cronies !!!!!!
I got stuck twice. Once for over 20 minutes. Had the good citizens not come out from their homes and push me free, I'd still be spinning my wheels. (literally) I mean really, who the fuck thought it a good idea to purchase 2 wheel drive suv's? It's nothing more than a fuckin station wagon.
Good call, Jodi!
Douche.
The snow was 2 inches where "our new savior" Raham pushed the Tahoe out... give me a fuckin break, its a photo op for him, nothing more.
I'm old. I really liked the Bubble Chevys (with the low rear wheel panels) back in the 90s; the engines just ROARED!
But the downside was going to a fast-job...the siren was no louder than a car alarm.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znD45Y-tLNc
Weis is on bullshit as usual my Chevy Suburban WITH FOUR WHEEL DRIVE had no problem navigating the streets. The idiot who purchased 6000 pound vehicles equipped with only 2 wheel drive should be hung by his testicles. And Weis's dumbass response that "we were concerned with maneuverability" is the reason we purchased two wheel drive makes no sense at all. What a goof. I can't wait till this asshole is gone
All true the tahoes are shit! You know SCC if they went to the "tire Rack" they could get blizzak winter tires and the problems would be a lot less! The tires we have are shit, good for 3 seasons but not CHICAGO WINTERS!
heres one that didnt need a tow
http://www.flickr.com/photos/marmotfotos/5413372795/
Who hates the crown vics and thinks those rwd's are terrible in the snow? I personally love them things and as long as that stupid traction control is off, I think they are great in the snow. And as far as only 25 tahoes getting stuck city wide why did I hear all night the fire dept battalion chiefs with their 4wd's coming to pull countless tahoes out of the snow? Why were sgt's telling all the 1st watch cars to come in, dump the stupid tahoe and take a crown vic once the 3rd watch came in? Yet more lies coming out of jpuds mouth!
J-fled & co. are revolving their dentures about "pursuit package Tahoes."
"Ya see, there go that bullshit right there!"
Chicago has a de facto no chase policy anyway so why the big deal about "pursuit package Tahoes" with summer racing tires?
Was there anybody thinking this shit through? The non-Police decision makers have screwed this job up almost beyond salvaging.
4wd Tahoes are electronically governed to top out at around 100 mph anyway...
Which is plenty fast enough for a 3 ton, over-tired and way under-braked vehicle.
Fuck 140 mph capability. anybody trying to go that fast in an suv is a menace. We'll take foul weather capability over chasing any day of the week.
Now, the rocket chevys (Corvette engines with iron heads) we drove in the mid 90's working CTA? Those things were MONSTERS! :) Ahh... fun times!
I love the tahoe! I bought one for my personal vehicle. I didn't get four wheel drive either.

Not much need for 4WD in Florida, though, right? I thought so.
ABC7 forgot to mention that we cannot chase anything with a Tahoe. So where does the "Police Package" come into play mr j-fled?

The No-Chase policy applies only to the pre-2007 Tahoes. Read a G.O. or two sometime...
its really no biggy...probally just change tires to an all season instead of the high performance ones they put on them...i like the tahoes......most officers do too.
If Im not mistaken, that contract was 2 MILLION DOLLARS MORE than the next competing bid. Had to go to a minority owned dealer. Read that in the trib when the deal went down. Only thing of reflection is, by the time the city actually pays the dealer he will be out of business because the rest of the world is net 30 or cash up front.
"In some conditions you could be driving an M-1 Abrams tank and you're not going to move forward on this," said Chicago Police Department Superintendent Jody Weis.
"Uh, Jody, bite me.

Yeah, really. Village of Lyons called out the NIPAS armored car to get a heart attack victim out of his impassable side street to the ambulance -- worked just fine.
Knock on the side of that thing, all you do is hurt your knuckles. No sound comes back...
Of course, our snowmobiles worked too. Whatever does the job...

SUV flips on LSD, tying up traffic
6:05 p.m. CST, February 4, 2011
"An SUV flipped over on Lake Shore Drive at Lawrence Avenue late this afternoon, narrowing traffic to just one lane, officials said.
"The accident occurred at about 4:10 p.m., according to police.
"Three lanes were blocked and northbound Lake Shore Drive was tied up all the way south to North Avenue, with travel speeds averaging 8 mph, according to Traffic.com. Traffic was clear by about 6 p.m..."

your day WILL come.
I personally helped push a SUV out from a side street where it got stuck. The PO was 99 on days. I don't think he called it in because he was actually getting help, but does that mean he never got stuck? Jfled says it never happened if it wasn't given to dispatch. Maybe I should have shot video 1st and posted to youtube then went to help. The title would read "When seconds counts the police are stuck in snow"
Man gets snowy revenge on shovel thief

Were those the ones with the different paint job, the white car with red-white-blue stripes down the side and "CTA Patrol" or something in kind of small latters? Yeah, I remember seeing 'em shadowing buses...(grin)
