City Blows It
Whose bright idea was it to have the plows, garbage trucks and heavy equipment clearing school parking lots - schools that everyone knew were going to be closed for at least a day, maybe two - while CPD lots and CFD firehouses remained buried under drifts 3 feet deep?
And Lake Shore Drive? The clusterfuck that keeps on giving:
And Lake Shore Drive? The clusterfuck that keeps on giving:
- More than 200 abandoned cars remain stranded, shrouded in snow on Lake Shore Drive and it's not clear when the drive will reopen, said Daley Chief of Staff Raymond Orozco in a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
Crews are expected to work through the night to clear what has become a sore spot for the mayor's administration, but officials said they don't know when the lakefront roadway will be re-opened.
Lake Shore Drive was getting pounded by 30-foot-waves on Monday. It should have been shut down the minute the snow began to fall and plowing efforts concentrated on alternatives to keep traffic moving on adjacent arterial streets. Orozco or Byrne or whomever blew this one big time.
We especially like how the city officials are blaming the citizens for assuming an unblocked, unrestricted, wide-open entrance ramp means they shouldn't be using a major thoroughfare to get to where they want to go. We certainly hope this is a new trend of blame. Maybe we can blame the parents for having children who think "wilding" down Michigan Avenue is acceptable behavior, that snatch-and-grab phone robberies on the El is a good time, that daily riots at the pre-penitentiary high schools is normal behavior, that slinging dope and teen pregnancy is normal and that three meals a day, no-strings-attached cash, "free" heat and electricity is somehow a birthright.
And since when has the mayor not showing up at press conferences been any sort of example of leadership?
Here's the thing about natural disasters - they can reveal all sorts of shortcomings with emergency plans. In fact, a relatively benign occurrence like a blizzard could be used as a training exercise to test a response to shutting down a major arterial highway, evacuating abandoned vehicles, relocating crashes, mass rescues, clearing roads, etc.
How much of that did you see in action Wednesday? If you said "zero," you're pretty much right on target. We better hope with all our hearts that Chicago is never singled out as a target of a major terror incident. Individual acts of heroism might be a regular happening, but a cohesive strategy to address the aftermath is so far beyond our leadership it isn't even funny.

The problem is, the egos are SO in the way, there IS no cohesiveness, no way to cooperate in a unified strategy.
MY orders are FAR more important than what's best for everyone. ME, ME, ME.
And so a few thousand people sat in their cars on Lake Shore Drive, when they never should have been allowed ON it.
And a couple thousand police officers couldn't get into their parking lots, couldn't drive their squads out of those lots and couldn't remmove their personal cars at the end of their tours. Because, though the schools were already officially closed, the school lots were more important to plow.
And JPWeis stomped his widdle foot and said, dammit, those 2wheel drive aluminum cans are fine, most days out of the year. Yup. NOT on the days they're MOST NEEDED, but on those fine, breezy, Chicago summer days, they're the bomb. (As long as you're not driving to a hot call, or taking a corner too fast, that is.)
Well, we made the national news and we didn't look good. They kept harping on how even Chicago couldn't handle it and they showed nothing but Lake Shore Drive over and over.
Mr. Daley, that's a fine way to go out. You look like an incompetent, as do your anointed department heads.
I saw so many people today on my tour of duty shoveling out their cars and the city street it was ridiculous. City plows would not go on residential streets, even once the main roads were cleared and salted. Folks on my block within the 23rd Ward shoveled and snow blowed the entire city street cause we knew the city wasn't going to do it. Fuck you Daley, Byrne, and Zalewski. Want to bet these assholes had the streets they live on cleared first?
LSD should have been closed at 1300. Daley the asshole should have told people to stay home from work on Wednesday and Thursday and encouraged business to shut down to allow for cleanup. What does he do? Tell people to go to work. God forbid the city loses some parking revenue, etc. from the working people by staying home. This storm wasn't a mystery. They knew it was coming a week in advance and still couldn't prepare for it. Political hacks and nothing else.
5 Feet of snow in the alley. No one is going anywhere. The elderly couple north of me is fucked. Keep plowing school lots so the illegals can have free breakfast.
Tom Byrne blew it again! Another example of Daley's lack of competent command staff. Bye "Tommy Boy."
OT: My neighbor and I cleared our section of our street with our snowblowers. Most work I have done for the city in 11 years, take a bow Mark.
I saw that the 23rd district had two new snowmobiles in the garage of the new station. I was told that only the tact teams were allowed to use them... Funny, I didn't see anything in the C.O. about that training.
I'm from Michigan and even though my sister thinks I'm crazy for paying your outrageous sales taxes I'm still willing to take an AmTrak ride into Chicago to check out the shoe sales at Filenes Basement. While I'm always armed with a handgun (because we are allowed to protect ourselves here) don't think the fact that I can't use it there will keep me from sending a screaming, terrorizing, pack of thugs bent on "wilding" someone to a place much wilder than they imagined. I always carry good old fashioned Aqua Net hair spray, the huge can, and a good Bic lighter. A nice blow torch in the face might be just what the doctor ordered on a wilding day in Chicago. Nothing gets between me and my new shoes.
It was all over the news well before the storm hit that waves would hit LSD. It was stupidity on both sides, drivers and the city, to drive on it and not shut it down.
Let's see supe that's never been a cop. Streets and san commish that's never touched a shovel or drove a truck. Cta commish that's never driven a bus. Cps chief that's never been a teacher. Ex beatuy queen in charge of the busiest airport in the country. Mayor/lawyer that's never passed the bar exam. (Big thanks to cecil partee right shanks). I love chicago.
Just got back from 003. What a difference there between my neighborhood (G-Ridge) and that place. On both side streets near my house all the walk ways are shoveled and the street is passable.
It's amazing when people actually work for a living....
City hall and 35th st only had a week to prepare for the blizzard, those weathermen shoulda gave them more time.
...and I haven't seen one, not one of the mayoral candidates step up and tell us how they would do a better job -- that's depressing. Not one. Any of you hear anything?
Heck I'll betcha the army corp of engineers could of built a bridge over to the other side of LSD and winched those buses off the drive in less time that it took to start the evacuation of the people.
Are you kidding me?
Can't we even put 50 pounds of rock salt on the buses when conditions like this are expected?
How much trouble is that?
There's a lot of things that could of been done better. Many would criticize and say that hindsight is 20/20 and it's easy to judge now.
However let's look at what's next eh? People's old lawn and garden furniture saving parking places on the street. Did anyone hear an announcement not to do it and what the penalty would be for doing it?
The city is looking for ways of generating revenue right? Someone puts their jink out to save a parking place they get fined.
Stop the b.s. They're creating a hazard. You better have some warming buses ready to roll too with the subzero stuff on the way
A savage is a savage, even in a blizzard...

0455hrs, first plow headed up my sidestreet. Made a turn and came back up the street the other way, too.
So, now all cars, on both sides of the street, are plowed in above the top of the wheelwells. It's gonna be a fun day.
At least CPD, etc., can travel down the street, if necessary. I guess that's something.
tommy boy is gone fuck him he wasnt the police ever and isnt any good at street and san what a joke
Special thanks to truck 48 for helping us get out of the snow on roosevelt and avers you guys could have kept goin. Thanks
Don't forget my fav - free cellphones.
Once it stopped snowing, my neighbors and I hit the alley with shovels and snowblowers and cleared it from street to street, we got most of the garages clear also. It was a par-tay!
What're we we supposed to do - wait for the City? Now we can all get to work.
Daley is a complete buffoon.
Hey zalewski, I know you're an egotistical little prick but where the hell are the plows? I haven't seen one plow hit any of the side streets in the 23rd ward but don't worry the street and alley from his house are free and clear. I'm so glad you are going to lose the election this time even with the help of madigan's people that you have coming in. 23rd ward residents reading this blog, please remember you have other options so please go out and vote!
Or maybe we can blame the irish wefare pimps!

Waves???? There weren't ANY waves. the lake was actually quite calm. look at the photos. It was only snow. if youre going to Monday Morning quarterback from your easy chair slick, AT LEAST YOU SHOULD HAVE A GENERAL IDEA OF WHAT YOURE TALKING ABOUT. You personify what is wrong with our department.
Did anybody notice how Orozco, who is a good man, fell on his sword for Daley over the LSD screw up. I wonder what he has been promised. And by the way, great accounting on the locations of the towed vehicles. No one can find their cars and no one seems to want to help. Not that it matters, the side streets won't be cleared until warm weather melts everything.
I cant even imagine what would happen if there was a 9/11 type incident in this city.
Total incompetence.

See what happends when you dont get an event number. All this could of been avoided.
Where was the Supt and acting ADS Mat Tobias?
AMAZING! The 023 Commander and her staff was all "working" Tuesday overnight for the snowstorm. Their assignment? They all sat in her office and never even had to put on their coats. Pathetic! Other bosses were out on the street with the POs and these turds were only seen sneaking out and laughing at drenched POs who worked all night.
3800 block of N. Troy, most neighbors out and shoveling. Sidewalks clear and much of the street too. Handicapped spots done for each other. A little too much furniture and junk out for my liking (young, childless, able bodied people saving spots mostly) but, a pretty good block to be on.
Gee if if were Terrorism we'd be F'KED
Hum . . Daley not up for re-election . . Ald. Tunney (44th Ward) running with no challenger. Now lets see what a phone call to the ward office brings about getting a city plow to make a pass on our block . . . The answer or maybe better - the tap dance to my question. " We hope to have a plow or 2 in the Ward to START on your street by Friday or Saturday if all goes well ". LOL Well, if all goes WELL, maybe we will have a spring thaw by Sunday and that will solve the problem.
On Wednesday, I got stuck right in front of the Academy. A big thank you to the 3 recruits and the unknown m/2 civilian that helped me get the Tahoe moving. It took us 20 minutes. Does anyone remember if there is a POD cam. in front or near the Academy?

only in chicago :)
In the Area 2/ 005th District lot, hats off to Capt J. O'D., Sgt J.S. and his Tact guys, 3 Watch street personnel and the Gang Enforcement guys. Hours of work. Cars moved back and forth so some of the lot could be plowed. Capt J. O'D. was out there with his snowblower. The desk crew could have chipped in to help and so could have the Area 2 Detectives.
All these new districts with vehicle impound garages and you can't use them. Frickin w/c's use as their personal garages....every morning prisoner van can't get into the sallyport because of tows/impounds. Huge safety issue. The commander is parked in the lot but the w/c's car is clean and toasty. Anybody call them out on this.
This the only big city in the country that doesn't have a Master Exercise Practitioner (MEP) from Homeland Security to get all plans into place. It's all because Chicago keeps thinking that they know how to do things but we see time and time again that they can't.
Get a Master Exercise Practitioner to run your Emergency Center. Use common sense Daley!
What is the function of Mayor's Chief Of Staff? I thought they run the daily activities of the Mayor, not make the final decision on whether to close Lake Shore Drive. That's why Chicago is so fucked up. We have a Traffic Unit assigned to patrol LSD, handle accidents and medical emergencies, and a POLICE Commander in charge of this Unit. Logic would be that this unit and commander should of been making the call if LSD was safe for traveling motorist to be on during the blizzard. The fucking Mayor Chief of Staff made that decision? Shouldn't the Traffic Unit Commander made that call, who in turn notifies the Superintendent, who in turn notifies the Mayor Chief of Staff, who then notifies the Mayor. That should be the roll of the Mayor Chief of staff and nothing more, but in the laughing stock of a city that's how shit rolls. Since when does CPD need permission from the Mayor Chief of Staff to close any Chicago street during a emergency?
why are streets and san wasting time cleaning parking meter boxes and bus stops?

City Blows It
Whose bright idea was it to have the plows, garbage trucks and heavy equipment clearing school parking lots - schools that everyone knew were going to be closed for at least a day, maybe two - while CPD lots and CFD firehouses remained buried under drifts 3 feet deep?
One word Answer: BYRNE!
Lil' Tommy Byrne, despite the finger pointing, is in charge of S&S and has the final call.
But, Lil' Tommy apparently is heavier than Orosco, who threw himself on the sword (actually Lil' Tommy pushed him) and Orosco wears the jacket for the major screw-up including LSD.
Aaaah, politics as usual in Chicago!
P.S. Even shortshanks was afraid to appear at the news conference as Lil' Tommy wasn't through shoving (other) people under da' bus.
Look at all the political hacks lined up in a row taking their turn at the mike. What a joke The national news showed pictures of the drive with all the cars but if you looked back it was exactly the same in all previous blizzards. So why did they keep the drive open? What made them think it would be different than years past? Oh Tommy Burn wasn't in charge then. I have a catchy phrase for you, "learn from history so you will not make the same mistakes they did" Got this from my 10 year old. Nice
A/1 lot is a joke (except the part right by the Motor Maint. garage of course)..... Squad cars parked in the middle of 51st St because the lot is so bad..
Up in my northside hood the 'urban' entrepreneurs are out in full force with their shovels.
Look for snow shovels to soon added to the long list of banned items used as weapons.
I love it. The mopes stuck on LSD are crying that Daley did not save them. What part of Daley is leaving and Rahm is taking over don't they get?
While I'm always armed with a handgun (because we are allowed to protect ourselves here) don't think the fact that I can't use it there will keep me from sending a screaming, terrorizing, pack of thugs bent on "wilding" someone to a place much wilder than they imagined. So........how YOU dion?
We should start a list of Shortshanks's top failures over the last 30 years.
Something to remember him by.
1. Draining city of financial stability
2. Blizzard 2011(with plent of warning)
3.
Hey guys and gals,
Let's have some reports out there on the condition of your aldercreature's street and alley. Plowed? I bet. DC's, etc. too. Might make for some interesting photos and maybe a funny little Pam Zeckman-style foot chase for the cameras. I'm checking mine and I'll let you know.
ITK
Tommy Byrne was the former school patrol LT. so probably still owes the schools for his quick raise in politics as well as Rusty.
they will all get jobs in the private sector, that is all!
A Chicago firefighter was attacked this afternoon after he approached a car blocking traffic on a South Side street, authorities said.
The fire crew from Engine 54 was on their way to a call when their fire truck was stopped by a car blocking traffic in the 7300 block of South Lafayette Avenue at about 5:20 p.m., Chicago police said.
When the 52-year-old firefighter approached the vehicle, a passenger became irate and stepped out to confront him, police spokesman Dan O'Brien said.
The passenger then struck the fireman and got back into the car, which fled the scene, O'Brien said.
The fireman was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, where he was listed in good condition, according to police and fire officials.
The vehicle that fled the scene was described as a 1995 Buick sedan. No arrests had been made Wednesday night.

Hey Pravda, oops, I mean Tribune, any description of the offender?
Between the SkyWay and Parking Meters deal it was clear that Daley could not have won another term. This incident was just the last nail in his political coffin. BUT WAIT, OFFICERS AT THE SCENE OF THIS FIASCO SAY THAT SEVERAL YUPPIES NEARLY WALKED INTO THE LAGOON AS THEY ABANDONED THEIR CARS.
WE MAY YET FIND SOMEONE IN A CAR OR DROWNED. But Daley could care less, after all he is Da Boz, and Rahm will be da nu Boz, so citizens BEND MOVER AGAIN!
BIG thanks to the unnamed plow driver who plowed the unnamed District lot at the request of an unnamed couple of Sgts and then refused an unknown article offered from the right hand of an unnamed Sgt.. We really appreciated it.
What a mess and what a shame we have to do things this way.
I dislike city hall as much if not more than most but I don't think they made any errors with LSD. Could they have shut it down sooner? Possibly but it shouldn't matter. The city and the media told people for days that LSD was going to be bad and to stay away. Yet these dummys CHOSE to use it. The drivers are the ones accountable and no one else.
What was a stupid decision was not to have a reasonable percentage of 4wd police vehicles. I do applaud CFD for having the snowmobiles available and in use. They were truly life savers.
And as usual the 36th ward will be the last to be plowed.
The same person who plans to re-route all ambulances and emergency personnel to Western Ave and close Ashland during the 26 mile marathon--and the same person who closes all the bridges over the river except one (North Ave) during the summer months......Please get someone in that position, who knows the city, and can plan accordingly. What a disaster!
A savage is a savage, even in a blizzard...

The Chicago Way!
I don't understand why, when a plow truck is leaving their barn and have to drive down a side street, they don't drop their plow and get rid of the snow. They're driving over it, so plow it on the way to a main st.
I am so proud to say, the people and kids on our block shoveled and snow-blowed the street and alley. It reminded me of 1967.
WHO NEEDS THE CITY? When the citizens band together to clear the street. Thanks to all that came out and helped.
Of course school lots would be plowed...there are more democratic CTU votes than there are police and fire votes. Have your priorities. They can already count on the votes of the ghetto sheep.
FYI
In 1979, the Jane Byrne snow storm, citizens were directed to remove their cars from city streets and park them in school yards. Apparently, no one figured that it had snowed in the school yards too. With no place to put their cars it was another strike against Bilandic. The school yard plowing may be in response to what happened in 1979. Unfortunately, they failed to remember what occurred on LSD in 1979 and 1967.
I know it's hard for egoists to understand, but most of this stuff has happened before. You know that thing about not knowing history and repeating it.
.....Tom Byrne blew it again!.....
That's all he's good for is blowing it!
He has never done anything right in his career, except marry into the Daley Family!
If you have a snowmobile or ski, come on over to the Clearing neighborhood. Yesterday I walked to help neighbors 'try' to clear side streets but the snow is too high. Even though I'm in good shape this snow is way too much for us to handle. I worry about the elderly or disabled people in my area that can't get out now...
I must disagree on one aspect. While the Drive most assuredly should have been shut down prior to the storm, the response to the aftermath was excellent. I was there in a support manner, blocking an entrance to the Drive. The police, fire, oemc and ss response was unreal. Dozens of fire and ems trucks were there to help citizens out of their vehicles. Streets and sans towing out cars that were accessible. Citizens that stayed with their cars and still had gas were allowed to drive away once the snow around their vehicle was cleared. Warming buses, coppers doing traffic control and assisting fire personnel. It was a pretty organized response, albeit after the fact. I am no disaster expert, but in my humble opinion, we (everyone that was there to get people out and remove the cars) did a pretty darn good job.
the earlier posters are right on....the city (911 bosses, streets and san bosses, throw in a few others) really fu##ed this up, big time....
i was in 001 last nite--the cpd parking lot was a disgrace. tons of open parking spots that should have been plowed-werent. i saw a genral services plow just do the "main thoroughfares" of the parking lot.
I saw that the 23rd district had two new snowmobiles in the garage of the new station. I was told that only the tact teams were allowed to use them... Funny, I didn't see anything in the C.O. about that training.
---------------------------------------
so in order words...you must have on 2-5 yrs, make pimpy arrests, wear pressed jeans or army fatigues, hairgel and carry a big duffel bag with all your police stuff in it to ride the cpd snowmobile?
Shoveled about 120' to escape my alley. Drove around and many other alleys were clear, but ALL appeared to be done by hand.
No Trina victims here, but again, moron Dem's DROPPED THE BALL even with days warning....
Nice!
here's the thing, too....who's really in charge in an event like this blizzard? Seems like, this guy runs this, but another guy runs that....egos get in the way, one guy can't tell another guy what to do, or what not to do....and whoever is really the guy....he probably doesn't know his a$$ from a hole in the ground....
There's a lot of things that could of been done better. Many would criticize and say that hindsight is 20/20 and it's easy to judge now.

"Of" is not a verb.

watch for a spike in newborns in October.
it's elementary.
From a retired one.
Thanks to all of you who showed up for work and braved the snow and cold. You are appreciated!!!
I'm currently watching the Mayor and his menyons speaking about how much work they've done to help the citizens of chit ca go. The only one to thank his troops was the Fire Commissoner. Funny how Weise was at the bottom of the roster to speak. Just goes to show you what king Richard thinks of his $350,000 man.
Just saw J-Fled on the OEMC press conference update on WGN news and can't believe that goof can put on a suit & tie for that but can't wear one for any other police function! And is it me or did his head get bigger?!
Coppers used their personal vehicles/plows to clear district lots just so parking was available for duty personnel. Squad cars were buried and took hours to get mobile...CITY THAT WORKS
OEMC news conference on right now. Little tommy wearing tight bright yellow sweatshirt and appears to need a bra. Shortshanks can't pronounce the word "accumulate".
The only two who can formulate a sentence is Hoff and Orozco.
Shortshanks just said he didn't speak yesterday because he didn't have to, because he trusts his department heads and he doesn't control any department in this city, and he lets the department heads run their department without his interference.
Weis walked in late in a brown suit and appeared to be limping or carrying a load in his pants.
Cops vs. cameras: filming cops illegal

I think the drivers should take at least half of the blame. It was a blizzard, the precise time it was to start was given, and people still drove to work and avoided metra and the cta. Why do we continuously have to be the nanny state. I bet a lot of people learned a valuable lesson Tuesday. Now those that were trapped on buses have a legitimate beef....
I know some of you have posted about "gettin out" while the getting is good and looking to the 'burbs so here is one for you. Streamwood is looking. About 40k people in town, starting salary at 57k, top out at 77k in 6 years. Pension fund is 90% funded. 12 hour shifts (6am/6pm), 2on/2off and every other week, Fri, Sat, Sun off! They have a brand new 44k sq ft PD that IS state of art(workout room, range, locker etc)dispatching is NWCD out of Arl Hgts. Here is the info:
http://www.streamwood.org/Services/Personnel/JobAnnoucements/PoliceOfficerApplicationPacket.pdf
Why was Tom Byrne wearing a tiny hat that looked like it was missing a propeller?
About the only smart decision the city made was keeping him out of sight after the first couple press briefings.
And notice how J-Fled had to crash the party so he could talk about the 'pursuit package' the cars have, blah, blah.
What a sorry little man.
ALL DEMOCRATS ARE COMMUNISTS SAYS:
so true, SCC, unfortunately this incompetence is only a small reflection of what always happens when Democommiecrats manage ANYthing. It will only get worse as time goes on, soon the entire Country will be a 3rd World Banana-Republic. The handwriting on the wall is obvious. America is doomed.
ALL DEMOCRATS ARE COMMUNISTS SAYS:

A Legacy of mass Corruption, utter Incompetence, fraud, lies, mismanagement of Public Funds, blatent Nepotism and Arrogance, Massive City Government Waste, and on and on. The biggest joke of all is the corrupt Feds, who have let the Daley Crime Cabal operate unchecked for over 4 Decades. WHY?

Its the total lack of management!!!!! Good answer why are EMERGENCY VEHICLES PLOWED IN?????? Go by Chief of Staff Orozco's house on 102nd Pl. between Springfield and Harding and look at the nice job done there with front end loaders.
Goes to show you that if this City is not prepared for a Blizzard imagine a Terroist attack. Last nite while crusing the City I noticed that the people who don't pay their taxes and leach off the City, will their streets were plowed, then I go up North and noticed that most of are public official's neighborhood's were plowed, so the people who don't pay taxes and the people who steal are taxes get first dib's while the working people in this City continue to get screwed.
stupid on both sides, dumbass people shouldnt even been out unless a must. unrealistic for that much snow to fall and numerous citizens not being stuck. big deal people got stuck on lsd. they allowed it to remain open cause the traffic was flowing which allowed alot of people to get home etc. sme just werent so lucky. what u want the city to do have ur street plowed including ur parking space immediately? it takes awhile only 400 plows. relax, its only snow ladies. i and everyone else shovels out our own spot, thats how it goes.
ShortShanks did a "gotta run" at the news conference, JPUD style.
Meanwhile some concerned citizen called in a huge snowball fight on LSD, dispatcher called it a "Twitter Flash Mob".
Twits.
How fuk'd up is this, u have a CFD Lt. Clearing the snow off crosswalks down 26th St. This is truly fuck*d up. Here's a thought take all those welfare public assistance leeches off their motherfuken ass and have them clear the sidewalks.
they did try to close LSD earlier, but the problem was the districts that were assigned to close the ramps were snowed in at their stations. Of course the blame will fall on the police department..Lil Tommy or scab ray will say, " we ordered LSD closed but the police couldnt do their part"
Incompetance always rises to the top in city govt...or better yet, shit floats
The news conference with shortshanks and his entourage of overly payed political cronies acting as "leaders" of various departments and agencies(all payed by our tax dollars) was pathetic. Very few of them said anything of real substance, and their ineptitude shined as they spoke. Chicago, Cook County, State of Illinois, is one big corruption plagued environment where thieving, lying, political hacks like shortshanks gouge hard working people. Just had to rant.
All they had to do was listen in on Zone 5 in 021 how they were going crazy with people gettin' stuck as early as 3:00 p.m. . I'm sure it was obvious what was going on early in the storm on any radio zone of districts that include LSD.
At noon on WGN, the mayor and all the "top people" held a news conference.
I heard him say both fire AND police and snowmobiles at their disposal. Was that really true?
Anyway - good job to the average copper working the street. It AIN'T easy out there.
I wish you guys had real 4W drives. Police should have a couple of Nissan Armadas or Toyota Landcruisers - screw the Detroit junk.
What the F*** would you have done! What if a semi jack-knifed on the Dan Ryan @ 18th Street at 6:45 pm on Tuesday and 6,000 cars backed up.I suppose Orozco, Hoff, and Byrne should have known and had the Ryan shut down by 5:30 because something like this could have happened. At least Orozco had the balls to stand up and say that it was his decision to leave the Drive open. Smart ass Goudie asks who are you to make the decision. Orozco has more real world experiernce than any of the political hacks downtown. Noone could have forseen that an articulated bus was going to jacknife at North Ave.
I think people should be telling that little pimp Chuck Goudie and the rest of the media to take a flying fuck. What arrogance to stand down there and criticize people who have been working 36-48 straight hours. The police, fire, streets and san cdot people worked there asses off. It wasn't an equipment failure. It wasn't planning failure. It wasn't human failure. It was the third largest snow storm to ever hit the third largest city in the country in the middle of rush hour.
Maybe people should take a little responsibility for themselves for a change. Everybody kenw all day that there might be problems on the Drive. But Fuck the world. I'm getting on the Drive and you better fix it for me.
And no I'm not related to any of the people mentioned above. Just a retired copper sick of listening to all of the whining.
I take no joy in this news. There are people suffering. No heat. I can attest to that. My heat is back on now, but it was miserable. Almost 48 hours, no heat. I ate tuna out of a can.
I'm still freezing, even though my power is back on. Two pairs of socks, still freezing. Crazy. Cold as hell.
The City truely showed its Colors during this event. Total disorganization and gross mismanagement. You can tell easily that this City is run by a bunch of incompetent Political Hacks. No coordination, terrible decisions, no forsight, passing the buck, failing to work together, failure to have a cohesive plan despite plenty of notice as to what was coming, and on, and on, and on. The sad part is that the entire Country is now run and mismanaged just like Crookago.
Blame the citizens for not heeding the warnings.
Yet....those were CITY buses that got stuck.
Next time, the city should listen to the city's warnings.
Holy fucktards batman. We knew this was coming, it was more of a sure thing than dangling a no-bid contract in front of a pair of wide eyed shortshanked shantyirish inbred brothers. Jesus, we are screwed if any real unexpected emergencies erupt.
WOW!
J-FLED BOBBLE HEAD SHOWS UP FOR THE LAST PRESS CONFERENCE.
AND IN A SUIT.... IMPRESSIVE
AND WHAT HAPPENED NO BEA CUELLO?
I THOUGHT SHE WAS HANDLING THE MESS.
WE COULD HAVE USED THOSE PADDY WAGON WITH CAMERA IDEA ON LAKE SHORE DRIVE!
TOMMY TOMMY TOMMY BYRNE THE LACK OF SLEEP SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN HARD ON U. TAKE UR PENSION AND RELAX ALREADY.
AND THE MAYOR CONFESSED THAT HE WAS DRIVING AROUND THE CITY WHEN THE BLIZZARD HIT CHECKING ON THINGS?
WHAT A MORONIC LITTLE MAN.
They asked daley about the alley's and he walked away.
Some heads need to roll and i'm talking ALDERMAN!!!!!!!!
Kudos to the officers who manned the roadblock(?) at the Foster Avenue on-ramp (Marine Drive/Foster Avenue) for LSD. They stayed on through the height of the storm and stopped many clueless drivers from venturing into LSD and into potential harm. Thanks!

interesting comment posted on this breaking news article:
"eek!whodat? at 11:48 AM February 03, 2011
Daley is trying to put the arm on the airlines to keep the "da deeze, dem & doze guyz" err... construction companies that contributed lotsa money to Daley over the years in the form of "campaign contributions" and kick-backs. While essential city services go begging for money and manpower, construction is moving along just fine. You want to know what happened to billions in tax payer treasury, look at these construction companies and you'll see ties to Crime King Shorty by blood, neighborhood roots and mutual desire to become multi-millionaires on the tax payer dime. Between (lowball estimates) $12 Billion to $15 Billion dollars has gone *poof* since Crime King ascended the throne of Chicago in 1989. The local media obediently looks the other way. Local law enforcement and investigative bodies are lousy with individuals who owe allegiance to Crime King Shorty. Local and state judiciary are full of appointees who owe their everything to Crime King Shorty & the criminal cabal known as Daley Inc. The tentacles of Daley Inc. reach all the way to the White House where their protege' is ensconced in order to stymie any meaningful snooping by the feds. The random flunky and fall guy gets trotted out for ritual public sacrifice under the guise of "weeding out corruption." No worries. Brother Bill is in D.C. to protect the interests of Daley Inc. The airlines will obey."
Raymond Orozco is a suckhole. I like how he deflected the blame for the LSD debacle. Mustn't let the short-one get egg on his face.
Watching the news conference Wednesday afternoon, you could see all the department heads making excuses regarding LSD. It reminded me of a megalomaniac from the 1940's. None of his "department" heads were willing to tell him the truth for fear of losing their "jobs."
I could just see the short one telling them, 'keep the drive open' and even though some may have disagreed they all were to scared to tell shorty no.
One last thing. Today I heared on my scanner, that department of revenue personnel were writing the towed LSD cars tickets. A policeman told the dispatcher this. I never heard the out come. Nothing like a kick in the face to go with being stuck for hours.
Thank You Chicago!
America's Most Miserable Cities
Forbes list Chicago as No.7
So some of the biggest dope blocks in 011 have semi trucks and back-Hos digging their streets out, yet my car is still snowed in. The dope boys must be tipping well

ITYM "...they should be using"...

Just A Civilian (who double checks all double negatives)
BTW - West Rogers Park (Ridge and Howard) - we had a huge community effort to shovel out the alley. City spirit lives!
Not impressed with the TV press conference today (saw it at Noon on WGN).
Note to ALL department heads: Worry more about performance and leadership than wearing ("I am part of the team")Logo Shirts.
If there was a plan for Lake Shore Drive, better go back and revise it for next time.
So tired of the media spin and the city hall apologist on this.
Look... the REAL issue is not whether the drive was closed down soon enough. That's being used as a distraction,
The REAL issue is where the cities resources were deployed.
Plowing around schools that would be closed for two days as a first priority while not only LSD was getting blasted but many first responder parking lots and the streets around them as well is unacceptable.
Oh and blaming the people that drove on LSD.
Maybe the city should of led by example.
It was a bus that caused the problem. Why did they allow the buses on the drive under these conditions.
Wanna call the people stupid and maybe so -- but what's the cities excuse if they're so smart?
Hey the buses are on there it must be okay right, says Joe citizen?
Anyway, More importantly what caused the bus to jack-knife and how many salt trucks/plows were committed to the drive prior to the accident that shut it down!
LSD is 18 miles from end to end. At 18 MPH you can put 6 plows on it spaced 20 minutes apart in both directions. If they were unable to keep up with what was blowing around it should of been shut down in less than 20 minutes.
But, no. The trucks were doing schools instead right? We really dodged a bullet here IMO.
Communications with the taxpayers was horrendous.
The best thing that happened was the decision to rent snowmobiles and it remains to be seen if that doesn't have some clout connected kick back scam tied to it too.
However I'll give 'em the benefit of the doubt on whomever made that decision for now. Well done!
Those are just some of the real questions. Not to mention that this LSD issue has the media totally distracted that some firehouses with equipment that they could not get out of the barn because of the [ppr decisions.
Not a word on that in the media!
I'm sick of hearing the response to why the side streets in some areas are still not done today.
The apologist throw out a big number and say: "Hey Chicago has over 3,000 miles of streets...give the city a break"
To that I say we pay taxes and the city also has over 300 pieces of snow removal equipment.
I want to know where they are and what they're doing. Haven't been here that's for sure.
Look, do the math.
The city has 3,000 miles of streets and 300 pieces of equipment. How long does it take a plow to make a ten mile pass...three days?
Think about it.
Shorty and the stutter squad hit the airwaves. They had trouble reading from the script.

How about certain streets in Bridgeport being cleared by water department front loaders and back hoes
beverly streets
30 years as a resaident here
never seen the streets in worse shape.
NO plows, all day yesterday, or today (on a designated fire street),
yet today, garbage day...
citizens had no place to put cans,
three trucks drove by...no plows, no salt, just empty trucks making a show???of what
so some city official can say the garbage was picked up as usual???
total bs
We should start a list of Shortshanks's top failures over the last 30 years.

my ex, no doubt.
you have been warned.
Good rant, but Traffic does not have a commander, it has a Lt, and a very good one.

Yeah, great response to a mess that never should have been allowed to happen.
And ALL THOSE RESOURCES could have been applied to other locations, if that mess hadn't been allowed to happen.

Frankly, I would hope my alderman's street or alley was plowed. I WANT Orozco and Byrne and the supe (if we actually had a real one) to be able to get to their critical jobs.
You think you've got complaints now? Just imagine the complaints if Orozco or Hoff couldn't get to his workplace to DO his job.
I want my alderman driving up slippery streets, getting to his office, fielding phone calls and directing ward operations, not lounging in his jammies, watching vintage movies, sipping hot chocolate in front of his fireplace at home.
Now, I'm as cranky as most people when it comes to favoritism, but this isn't favoritism; it's being practical. The guy who runs the show needs to be able to get there to actually do the job. Be realistic.
.
Tommy Byrne was the former school patrol LT. so probably still owes the schools for his quick raise in politics as well as Rusty.
2/03/2011 09:12:00 AM
Lil Tommy BYRNE had the exclusive security contract with CPS for all metal detectors. Then when questions were asked about ethics he turned it over to his wife for that minority status! What a little no going to federal pen punk.

Jody, Jody, Jody, this is NOT the way to angle for that new job. Do what everyone else does: generate a resume, send it to a few hundred places that have advertised job openings, then wait for a response.
Trying to create yet another job that never existed before YOU and your extra-special, super-duper talents came along is just NOT the way to do it. Tsk, tsk, tsk.
Us natives especially know that Chicago always gets two storms -- the meteorological one, and then the political one.
Channel 7 News got out and drove around and found out what we all know anyway; all the streets aldermen live on are scraped clean while everything else around looks like Siberia.
The high point was when they caught Alderman Sandy Jackson up in the passenger seat of a city plow, directing snow removal operations in front of her house.
She didn't miss a beat. B---h climbed right down out of that cab and began demanding "an investigation as to how these resources are allocated!"
Unbelievable.
Big ones, and made of brass...

It was all over the news well before the storm hit that waves would hit LSD. It was stupidity on both sides, drivers and the city, to drive on it and not shut it down.
2/03/2011 12:55:00 AM
2/03/2011 06:26:00 AM
==
You need a reading comprehension course. And an attitude adjustment.
The reports were that there could be huge waves overcoming the drive. The reports were that there would be high winds and extreme snowfall amounts. Therefore, the drive should not have been allowed to stay open.
You don't wait for the disaster to happen before you act. You behave proactively. That's called PLANNING.
Just because there weren't any WAVES, it was apparently okay, by YOUR reckoning, to have left the Drive open. Let's just dismiss the fact that 50mph winds, driving sleet and snow, water spray and bitter temperatures WERE occurring, and DID affect the surface of Lake Shore Drive.
With the Drive left open, what happened out there was inevitable. Had it been closed, it was completely avoidable.
You sound like the PERFECT city planner. No brains.
.
Where oh where was King Ritchie at all of yesterday's news conferences? He sent out his political hacks to take the hits and fall on the sword. If that fucker wasn't a lame duck he'd suffer political damage over the LSD boondoggle.

Call the Village of Skokie and ask if they'll help.
Seriously.
They might have some equipment available after they get done plowing out their alleys tonight. The streets are already done.
Call Channel 7 or someone and let them know too, if you can get something going. This'd make a hell of an embarassing story.
2/03/2011 08:18:00 AM
So the district functions in spite of Commander Ball's complete incompetence. Congratulations! You have again hidden your commander's incompetence by doing the work he failed to do.
It is the commander's job to organize movement of the squads so the lot can be properly plowed. What does he do? Once his spot was plowed by Motor Maintenance, he went home.
His failures are not brought to light because of the watch's interference.
The only way to make change is to allow failure.
Shoveled 6 hours to get out of my garage facing an alley to try to keep the street clear for the plow. What a mistake. Next time, I will just park in the center of the street and get a free re-lo tow to a local lot.
It's 6:50pm on Thur. and still NO city plow down my street. But just saw the news where the mayor and most aldermen had their streets and ALLEYS plowed before the snow officially ended. This is total BULL.
Can't feel sorry for the idiots on LSD as they had fair warning to avoid... 60+ mph winds, etc. Why would you want to drive along a body of water with 18foot waves predicted? Duh!
Daley really screwed it again.
We are doomed if there is ever a REAL disaster to hit this city... can't even handle 20" of snow?
LMAO!
We closed the drive in 1999 and there was no problem what-so-ever, but why would they do something that only takes common sense.
The officer's from the 021st District were magnificient, and did a great job.
City doesn't always blow it --
Just now saw on Channel 11 "Chicago Tonight" -- film of a CFD paramedic run using one of the snowmobiles. They had to get a guy out of an impassable side street to the ambulance which could not get any closer than two blocks away.
They zipped right up the sidewalk with all their gear, stabilized the patient, bundled him into the yellow Stokes stretcher, and towed the stretcher right back down the walk towards the main street, just slicker than grease and no problem.
I did not catch a location on this, but there was a "Lt. Dietz" in the picture.
"We're there when you need us."
Great job, guys!
From a non cop, but a city worker.
In regards to the comment about the plows cleaning the school parking lots and now the cpd and cfd lots. While is allowed by the police that double and triple parking is allowed in front of the public schools when waiting for their future scientists?
I work in 024 and live in 017. The snow removal was superior in 024, much of it imitiated by citizens in alleys and side streets.
WHO NEEDS THE CITY? When the citizens band together to clear the street. Thanks to all that came out and helped.
++++++++++++++++++++++
We did the same thing. Neighbors working together for the common good. We do it every time, just like so many others.
That said, we should not have to do that. We pay taxes for these services. I know, I know it was an unusual event. But that's when we need the services to kick in. Shovel our sidewalks, absolutely. Dig out the cars, ok, I'll give you that too. But the street? Alleys? Cars stuck on the drive for 24-36 hours? That's horseshit.
The city saying that this was an unusual event and we have to be patient? How about during the next Bulls riot (an example) we tell the citizens (and I use the term loosely) "listen, this is an unusual event, please be patient". Can you imagine? Just like this event, the public needs us when the shit hits the fan. Well the snow hit the fan, and I want some effin service.
And while I am on this, and repeating what others have said, why so many bosses. Even the Joint Chiefs of Staff have a leader. And I'm not talking about shanks. There should be one person (a trained professional, not a political hack) responsible for decisions. And those decisions should be made with the welfare of the public in mind, not CYA and I want to protect my spot as the guiding principles.
Ah never mind, I guess I am dreaming.
Want an example? Sgt. Haymaker. Salt? No salt? Close the ramps? Leave them open? Sorry Haymaker family, we couldn't reach a consensus and now your husband, father and all around good man is dead.
One more thing. Again as has been mentioned before, if the city can't handle a snowstorm, we would be completely fucked during a terrorist event. Completely fucked.
Mr. and Mrs. Citizen, you have no idea of the level of dysfunction.
Anyone else notice at the press conf. when the reporters were asking Byrne questions...Orozco standing behind Byrne, he was giving him the answers...trying not to move his lips?? Dumbass forgot his mike was still on!!!! Bryne had no f*cking idea what the hell was going on!!!! Bunch of Idiots!!!!

I finally got out and all I can say is Wow!
The westend of 008 or the 023rd Ward is a disaster.
There are no plows, salt trucks or garbage trucks with plows out here!
Zalewski dropped the ball!
I don't know where the trucks are but any streets or alleys that have been cleared have been done by the citizens/taxpayers - not city trucks!!!!
Say goodbye to your Aldermanic position Mr. Zalewski!
Does anyone remember if there is a POD cam. in front or near the Academy?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
It's on the corner of Jackson and Loomis.
The Day three of Armageddon and the 023rd Ward / Clearing is still not CLEAR.
NO TRUCKS SEEN OR SENT TO HELP THE GOOD TAX PAYERS IN THE CLEARING NEIGHBORHOOD!
GOODBYE ZALEWSKI
No one is commenting on the job that was done by police and fire personnel. We are all trained, dedicated workers that always do what is needed with everyone elses safety our priority.
The problem is that lsd should have been shut down prior to rush hour, it was already noted that the lake was cresting 18ft waves.
A detour should have been opened(after all lsd has been here for some time and I am assuming alternate routes are pre-arranged)
The detour being a priority with plows and salt trucks.
Imagine if that lightning ignited a transformer and a large fire ensued.
Imagine if a terrorist attack or some sort of uprising took place.
All the personnel clogged up on lsd,the same personnel(fire)that handle the high rises.
Fire and police having to respond from all areas of the city, and we all know how difficult it was to drive.
It was a huge error that thankfully went well...no thanks to the city govt morons but all the credit goes to the dedicated police, fire and s&s personnel with boots on the ground.
All of us undercompensated, overtaxed, unappreciated civil servants that risked our lives to help the selfish, close minded, unthinking citizens.

lET'S SEE WHO BEATS WHO
23RD WARD or 36th WARD?
Folks on my block within the 23rd Ward shoveled and snow blowed the entire city street cause we knew the city wasn't going to do it.
-- I have a lot of old timers on my block so it's still a mess. The center of street was clear when I woke up this morning. Wondering if they are going to make a 2nd round to clear along the curbs (Sarcasm) People still cannot get out of their garages. I haven't seen a plow in the 23rd ward today, not that I was really paying attention. ZALEWSKI better be voted out! He hasn't done shit for a long time. Patchwork on the potholes and painting light poles is about all I can think of.
My friend in England sends this along -- even the papers there are asking "Where Was Mayor Daley?"

Remember -- as the Mayor said on Monday, "Snow...doesn't matter."
2/03/2011 05:42:00 AM
I agree. I called his office today at 0845 hrs. They said 6 plows and 2 salt trucks are clearing up the 23rd ward. I got home from work at 1630hrs after getting stuck 3 times between 63rd and 61st and still no plows. Its now 2040 hrs and guess what NO FUCKING PLOWS. But glad to know your fucking block was crystal clear Zalewski you jagoff. Way to piss off the citizen/voters in your own ward. And thanks to the rest of the city trucks clearing schools in the ghetto all day so the little welfare fucks can make it to day care for free breakfast, lunch and time to threaten and batter some teachers!!!
They never went to US Army Command and Staff College
I live in the 41st ward. You know the one that has so many peolple running for alderman. We the pleople of that ward shoveled all our walks streets and most alleys. Nope never seen a plow yet, and most likely won't.
Say it ain't so SCC...
Is Lt. Ray-Ray really enjoying his new spot in SWAT moonlighting as Rahm-bo's security staff?
Anybody in SWAT wanna comment on this? Anybody got the A&As to send to SCC when we Ray is working his side job while he's suppose to be in Homan Square.

Its not my job, its the job of General Services and Facility Management + your Commander!! John Ball who is in charge of the facility. If I drove it and got it stuck I wud dig it out- if u wuda had a heart attack while shoveling it out u think they woulda gave u line of duty death or disability-- NO.. Again NOT MY JOB!!!!
This city couldn't engineer a "WET DREAM"! Gee, let's disect this...
We have a fireman (chief of staff lol) deciding what is best for the LSD when we have an entire traffic unit dedicated to patrolling of the drive. Did anyone think to ask for their input? I doubt it, cuz if they did, IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN OPEN TO START!
We have a political hack ex- CPD boss (Tommy Thumb) acting like he knows the first thing about plowing snow! I wonder how many times he's even had a fkn shovel in his hand! I love it when he gets all dressed up as the Teamsters' poster boy!
We have a bunch of political cronies double dipping at OEMC, who couldn't all combined, close an umbrella!
We have a disgrace for a supe that had the balls to outright lie to the public about the shit we have to drive. HEY JODY, CAN YOU SAY RULE 14 VIOLATION?
All we need now is the fkn candlestick maker and we have the entire FAIRY TALE!
And if they did this as a test run for a REAL disaster evacuation such as after a terrorist attack, WE ARE SOOOO FKD!!!
What they should have taught you in college is that sometimes you have to roll up your sleeves and do it yourself. So don't cry that you had to shovel yourself.
First Responders Rally 02/03/11
There will be a First Responders Rally for Mayoral Candidate Gery Chico on Wednesday, February 9th. The rally will take place at 115 Bourbon Street from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Come out and meet and greet one on one with our next Mayor. Tell, text, or just bring your friends.
O.T. My garage has over 3 and a half feet of snow in the alley do plows go thru alleys? I called 311 and they said that they do not plow alleys that they only make tracks. Is that so? Does anyone know a snow removal service I cant even take the garbage out what to do what to do? Not a cop.
Will Marrying into the daley family allow you to collect 2 city pensions? Lil tommy byrne looked so lost, where was al sanchez when we needed him? Oh yeah! He got 2 yrs in the joint for alledgedly fixing it for political hacks to get city jobs. Isnt that what our mayor is also guilty of? The only people showing any competence were, rodrÃguez, orozco, the head of OEMC, it was HDO at its finest. To bad the hobbits, daley and byrne will find ways to lay any failures on them instead of themselves.
why are streets and san wasting time cleaning parking meter boxes and bus stops?
2/03/2011 08:35:00 AM
Its So Laz and CPM can start enforcing Pay Boxes on Saturday you dork...why else have a City worker clean around a Pay Box?
FYI to all you Blues:
Dept of Revenue has spent the last 2 days helping with Wellness checks.
Parking Enforcement and Booter Ops were suspended at 7pm on Tuesday Night.
Get all the 2 inch+ parkers you can by Monday. Its business as usual then.
Nobody to blame for this. The same situation could have happened on any of our expressways. I remember seeing many situations like this play out in other cities across this country during a blizzard. This is why we are told/were told to have the basic essentials in our vehicles.
To the haters in the 23rd ward my block was plowed by Wednesday afternoon. And no one special lives on my block. So zalewski will get my vote again. Plus the ward was one of the first to get front end loaders to move the snow.
Weis walked in late in a brown suit and appeared to be limping or carrying a load in his pants.
2/03/2011 12:20:00 PM
maybe he ignored the warnings on the bottle of Viagra.
Was at the firehouse last night, wife called & said the block was taking up a collection to pay a private plow driver to hit the block.....guy made a couple of passes with the blade down & left with $200 plus in pocket....
Called my nephew with a plow to clear my wife's handicapped space & my elderly neighbors spot......everyone came out again, moved their cars, threw in $10-$20....3/4 of the block is cleared from curb to curb....big pile at the end without fucking people out of spaces....one hour of work for a 20 year old kid netted some nice green....
The next block over, still rutted and barely passable even with 4WD...
I cant even take the garbage out what to do what to do? Not a cop.
2/03/2011 09:29:00 PM
toss your bags into the neighbors yard.
All we need now is the fkn candlestick maker and we have the entire FAIRY TALE!

2/03/2011 09:12:00 PM
i make candles.
Chalkie
I finally got out and all I can say is Wow!
The westend of 008 or the 023rd Ward is a disaster.
There are no plows, salt trucks or garbage trucks with plows out here!
Zalewski dropped the ball!
I don't know where the trucks are but any streets or alleys that have been cleared have been done by the citizens/taxpayers - not city trucks!!!!
Say goodbye to your Aldermanic position Mr. Zalewski!
2/03/2011 07:53:00 PM
Got home last night around 1am a front end loader made a decent path.
Went to bed around 2am. Just as I was falling asleep, the plow went by at least 5 times on an East/West street by me. Still not that great, but it's better.
However, no plows or front end loaders have gone down the north/south street by me
I'm more impressed by what me and my neighbors did. Once I get out there 1 more time tomorrow, throw down some salt. It should be dry curb to curb the length of 3 houses worth...
2/03/2011 07:45:00 PM
funny you should mention this, as i noticed most of the time i couldn't see where Orozco's right arm was.
Now, I'm as cranky as most people when it comes to favoritism, but this isn't favoritism; it's being practical. The guy who runs the show needs to be able to get there to actually do the job. Be realistic.
.
2/03/2011 06:25:00 PM
i know you meant to say '...ruins the show...', right?
The only way to make change is to allow failure.
2/03/2011 06:49:00 PM
not in this town.
guess where all the plows were sent?
LAKE SHORE DRIVE!
DA MAYOR WAS EMBARRASSED ON NATIONAL TV SO HE ORDERED ALL PLOWS TO HIT LSD AND HAVE IT CLEAR BY NEXT DAY OF BIZ-NESS.
BUT All THE ALDERMAN CRIED A BIT AND BEGGED FOR THEIR TRUCKS BACK.
MANY BEGAN CALLING UP FAVOR OF PRIVATE SNOW PLOWS IN CERTAIN AREAS....
BUT LSD IS NICE AND CLEAN NOW.
"Meanwhile some concerned citizen called in a huge snowball fight on LSD, dispatcher called it a "Twitter Flash Mob"."
"Twits."
--2/03/2011 01:33:00 PM
Usless assholes with diamond studs in their noses, playing little cell phone games in the middle of a disaster.
"STOP! Police line."
If you'd "mobbed" down there with blankets and shovels and jugs of hot coffee for the people affected, and offered a ride home here and there or a warmup in your car, you might have been able to look in the mirror this morning and feel like something other then the overprivileged, supercilious pieces of shit that you are.
...and yet these'll be the first ones crying for responders to get them out of a stuck elevator before they go pee-pee or something..."I'LL SUE!"
*
Do you know what amazes me most? The fact that Chicago has gone through this type of snow event so many times before and with all this prior information our streets and san leader failed to close down LSD.
That's not all I have to say.
Now the taxpayers have to pay for the mistakes of the anointed and clouted.
The mistakes of the sup of streets and san incurred the extra cost of towing of all the vehicles abandoned on LSD, and the cost of the Chicago towing website, and the salaries (over time)of the tow drivers, bus drivers and our great Fire Dept and medics. Not to mention the salaries of other first responders. Oh yea. didn't they give the towed cars and owners FREE gas? Compliments of who?
Guess who?

From a non cop, but a city worker.
In regards to the comment about the plows cleaning the school parking lots and now the cpd and cfd lots. While is allowed by the police that double and triple parking is allowed in front of the public schools when waiting for their future scientists?
2/03/2011 07:24:00 PM
HUH?
It was a snow day, so what did your alderman say on voicemail when you called?
Well check it out. here
This is representative of the poor communications from the city that I've been ranting about here.
How about some tech savvy aldermen eh? This is not acceptable.
How long does it take to show you care about the people in your ward?
I don't care if you're driving around checking the streets or what you're doing -- how long does it take to change a voice mail greeting to communicate and aid your constituents.
I'll wager some of these elected officials haven't changed or even set up a voice mail greeting message since they've been put in office. Hey guys YOU'RE PUBLIC SERVANTS. You need to communicate of leave.
OUT WITH THE CLOUT!
Again what you fail to realize is that the bosses may have a bullshit degree of some sorts but in reality they talk and act like the furthest they went was 8th grade.
O.T. My garage has over 3 and a half feet of snow in the alley do plows go thru alleys? I called 311 and they said that they do not plow alleys that they only make tracks. Is that so? Does anyone know a snow removal service I cant even take the garbage out what to do what to do? Not a cop.

Buy, or borrow, a shovel. There's over a hundred feet between my back door and my alley. Surprise! I have to shovel the walk, all by myself, in order to take out the trash.
Garbage trucks are only supposed to tamp down the snow by driving through. (I'm assuming you're new to the city?) Some neighborhoods, they'll send a truck through, but your gangway (that's the sidewalk alongside your house that goes to the alley) will be plowed in, either way, even if it's just a neighbor who snowblows the entire alley.
No matter what pushes the snow against your garage door, you're on your own there, too.
Live in the 39th Ward, saw or should I say heard our first City Truck at around 2200 hours. The truck was blowing the horn because he could not get down our street, due to cars parked. The thing here is we/neighbors plowed our own street yesterday...knew we could not wait for the city. Our alleys are impassable(I know they are not plowed) but this should be the exception(some people have medical emergency needs). Had a senior citizen told by a staff member (from Alderperson's Office) have to do it yourself! Not quite the answer to give when there is an election around the corner. That truck that did nothing on our block could have just dropped the blade in the alley! Hell give me the truck and overtime!
Firefighters, Police, Streets & Sans, even E & R tow drivers fucking rocked! After our so called leaders fucked things up so bad we were able to get the job done!
All the talk about 67, 79, or 99 blizzards compared to this one is irrelevant, they were all bad in their own way, what is most disturbing is the lack of leadership! Poor decisions were made by these goofs. I mean really...Tommy Boy in charge of streets and Sanitation? This guy couldn't pour piss out a boot if the directions were on the sole!
For me it's a no brainer... close The Drive. What's the risk? More traffic? At least you have the ability to take another street.
All they had to do was ask any Copper, Firefighter, plow/tow driver what to do and run with it!
Sua Sponte!

Bravado and bullshit. She's running, opposed by five others, and scared for her political life. It was a cheap, easy way to get some publicity for her lagging campaign.
Her husband has reached the pinnacle of his political career and is careening downward. She is iffy, at best, for her aldermanic seat.
Couldn't happen to a better couple.
Still can't get my car out, so tomorrow is a furlough day. After spending nearly two days with bobblehead and the gump cousins, a three day weekend is in order.
In 024, the commander was out shoveling with the rest of us and the midnight captain was pushing a PPOs vehicle out of the snow. Nice display that no matter what uniform you wear, we're all just a brotherhood.
I listened to Byrne read his statement to the media. Did this bufoon even go to high school? Talks worse than Daley. I was embarrassed listening to the stammering dwarf.
Apparently there is some sort of Streets & San strike going on and we are in the middle of it. Plows went down side streets but plowed in cars and left mounds in front of driveways that will take the heat of summer to melt. This is absolutely ridiculous. Come on - we know you guys aren't going to have jobs in a few months but do we all have to suffer in the meantime?
Just saw J-Fled on the OEMC press conference update on WGN news and can't believe that goof can put on a suit & tie for that but can't wear one for any other police function! And is it me or did his head get bigger?!
2/03/2011 12:01:00 PM

Well, his hair sure got longer, darker and thicker. Seemingly overnight. It's a true miracle!
Final figure --
The city is apparently going to return the rental snowmobiles, as the streets are officially all passable by now.
Could have fooled me.
During the time we had them, however, CFD reports over 500 runs made with the snowmobiles.
This should become a permanent item on the city "TO DO" list when storms like this approach.
CFD chief Hoff called the operation "a home run -- lives were saved."
"Does anyone know a snow removal service I cant even take the garbage out what to do what to do?"
--2/03/2011 09:29:00 PM
You already paid the city. They won't come across? Take the garbage out -- to an affluent neighborhood with better connections that's all plowed and nice. Quietly put it on the curb and then leave.

Go to Craig's list and look up snow removal but only people with a bobcat. Some will do it for $25.00 a garage and then a flat rate for the alley. I got all of my neighbors together, we pitched in and got the alley cleared. I had snow three quarters up my door that had frozen into a solid block.
Will Marrying into the daley family allow you to collect 2 city pensions? Lil tommy byrne looked so lost,
Really Daley Family is that his clout.

Get together with your neighbors and a couple of snow blowers and do it yourselves. Took us 4hrs
Tommy Byrne, you've been a political hack your entire life!!! Why should things change now, but at least don't throw anyone else in front of another bus... You're the one that mandated that Lake Shore Drive remain open... once a piece of shit, always a piece of shit... MAN UP!
I remember the blizzard of '67, although i was in 8th grade... I remember the blizzard of '79, three man beat cars, and the end of Bilandek... But who remembers the blizzard of '99??? No one, because it was handled so well, no one was inconvenienced. Only problem is that now no one cares, and there's no one that knows what he/she is doing that can get us through this!
Thanks Richie... you and your cronies made their millions,
'Anybody in SWAT wanna comment on this? Anybody got the A&As to send to SCC when we Ray is working his side job while he's suppose to be in Homan Square.'
this is the same BS that RayRay bounced out of SOS/SWAT by then-Deputy Supt. John Risley a few years back. No other Cmdr of that unit was willing to bring RayRay back there until Roussell took the helm
(another J-Fled flunkie). So it's not surprising that RayRay is going back to his old ways, with 3M again running interference for him. Let's hope we get a new Supt. who will kick these imposters out of the CPD once and for all.

It would be a shame if snow and plows and all were to do any damage to any of those payboxes. Just saying. LAZ probably has a clause in there forcing the City (us) to pay in case of decreased revenues following a snow storm.
Tommy Byrne became a police officer in 1970, in 1970 the height requirement was 5-10, now you do the math, is Tommy Byrne 5-10 or maybe did he know someone " Jack Byrne".
Hey: I shovled my car out and cleared the alley, with the help of neighbors..my question is..WHEN do I get my check from FEMA..what no govt handouts???
Can I get an amen????
Not much for posting but I have to agree with others who have noticed how people in some area's of the city were out shoveling even as the snow was still coming down trying to stay ahead of it . While some areas just do nothing but complain and wait for someone to come and bail them out.Can only say LOVE my neighbors we plowed shoveled and partied (got some great pic's too.).
Again what you fail to realize is that the bosses may have a bullshit degree of some sorts but in reality they talk and act like the furthest they went was 8th grade.
That's where we disagree. Don't insult an 8th grader like that. I think they all spoke like they quit school right at the first grade level.
Can't feel sorry for the idiots on LSD as they had fair warning to avoid... 60+ mph winds, etc. Why would you want to drive along a body of water with 18foot waves predicted? Duh!
Duh! It's a city's responsibility to shut a road down if they know we're expecting 18 foot waves. Never would have happened if the fucking idiots at the top did their job and shut it down. They risked the safety of citizens, police and firemen.
Say it ain't so SCC...

A PIECE O SHIT> RAHM SHOULD BE CAREFUL OF THIS GUY> BTW IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE AY RAY GETS CAUGHT> HE IS TRYING TO SAVE HIMSELF AND 3M FROM DESTRUCTION> HE WILL SUX UP TO ANYONE TO SAVE HIMESELF>
Ray Ray has no ethics maybe rahm has meet his match Ha HA

I don't understand why, when a plow truck is leaving their barn and have to drive down a side street, they don't drop their plow and get rid of the snow. They're driving over it, so plow it on the way to a main st.
It's because they don't want to kill the job. The longer it takes to remove the snow the more OT they can rack up.
