City Blows It

Whose bright idea was it to have the plows, garbage trucks and heavy equipment clearing school parking lots - schools that everyone knew were going to be closed for at least a day, maybe two - while CPD lots and CFD firehouses remained buried under drifts 3 feet deep?

And Lake Shore Drive? The clusterfuck that keeps on giving:
  • More than 200 abandoned cars remain stranded, shrouded in snow on Lake Shore Drive and it's not clear when the drive will reopen, said Daley Chief of Staff Raymond Orozco in a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Crews are expected to work through the night to clear what has become a sore spot for the mayor's administration, but officials said they don't know when the lakefront roadway will be re-opened.
Lake Shore Drive was getting pounded by 30-foot-waves on Monday. It should have been shut down the minute the snow began to fall and plowing efforts concentrated on alternatives to keep traffic moving on adjacent arterial streets. Orozco or Byrne or whomever blew this one big time.

We especially like how the city officials are blaming the citizens for assuming an unblocked, unrestricted, wide-open entrance ramp means they shouldn't be using a major thoroughfare to get to where they want to go. We certainly hope this is a new trend of blame. Maybe we can blame the parents for having children who think "wilding" down Michigan Avenue is acceptable behavior, that snatch-and-grab phone robberies on the El is a good time, that daily riots at the pre-penitentiary high schools is normal behavior, that slinging dope and teen pregnancy is normal and that three meals a day, no-strings-attached cash, "free" heat and electricity is somehow a birthright.

And since when has the mayor not showing up at press conferences been any sort of example of leadership?

Here's the thing about natural disasters - they can reveal all sorts of shortcomings with emergency plans. In fact, a relatively benign occurrence like a blizzard could be used as a training exercise to test a response to shutting down a major arterial highway, evacuating abandoned vehicles, relocating crashes, mass rescues, clearing roads, etc.

How much of that did you see in action Wednesday? If you said "zero," you're pretty much right on target. We better hope with all our hearts that Chicago is never singled out as a target of a major terror incident. Individual acts of heroism might be a regular happening, but a cohesive strategy to address the aftermath is so far beyond our leadership it isn't even funny.

The problem is, the egos are SO in the way, there IS no cohesiveness, no way to cooperate in a unified strategy.

MY orders are FAR more important than what's best for everyone. ME, ME, ME.

And so a few thousand people sat in their cars on Lake Shore Drive, when they never should have been allowed ON it.

And a couple thousand police officers couldn't get into their parking lots, couldn't drive their squads out of those lots and couldn't remmove their personal cars at the end of their tours. Because, though the schools were already officially closed, the school lots were more important to plow.

And JPWeis stomped his widdle foot and said, dammit, those 2wheel drive aluminum cans are fine, most days out of the year. Yup. NOT on the days they're MOST NEEDED, but on those fine, breezy, Chicago summer days, they're the bomb. (As long as you're not driving to a hot call, or taking a corner too fast, that is.)

Well, we made the national news and we didn't look good. They kept harping on how even Chicago couldn't handle it and they showed nothing but Lake Shore Drive over and over.

Mr. Daley, that's a fine way to go out. You look like an incompetent, as do your anointed department heads.

I saw so many people today on my tour of duty shoveling out their cars and the city street it was ridiculous. City plows would not go on residential streets, even once the main roads were cleared and salted. Folks on my block within the 23rd Ward shoveled and snow blowed the entire city street cause we knew the city wasn't going to do it. Fuck you Daley, Byrne, and Zalewski. Want to bet these assholes had the streets they live on cleared first?

LSD should have been closed at 1300. Daley the asshole should have told people to stay home from work on Wednesday and Thursday and encouraged business to shut down to allow for cleanup. What does he do? Tell people to go to work. God forbid the city loses some parking revenue, etc. from the working people by staying home. This storm wasn't a mystery. They knew it was coming a week in advance and still couldn't prepare for it. Political hacks and nothing else.

I'm from Michigan and even though my sister thinks I'm crazy for paying your outrageous sales taxes I'm still willing to take an AmTrak ride into Chicago to check out the shoe sales at Filenes Basement. While I'm always armed with a handgun (because we are allowed to protect ourselves here) don't think the fact that I can't use it there will keep me from sending a screaming, terrorizing, pack of thugs bent on "wilding" someone to a place much wilder than they imagined. I always carry good old fashioned Aqua Net hair spray, the huge can, and a good Bic lighter. A nice blow torch in the face might be just what the doctor ordered on a wilding day in Chicago. Nothing gets between me and my new shoes.

...and I haven't seen one, not one of the mayoral candidates step up and tell us how they would do a better job -- that's depressing. Not one. Any of you hear anything?

Heck I'll betcha the army corp of engineers could of built a bridge over to the other side of LSD and winched those buses off the drive in less time that it took to start the evacuation of the people.

Are you kidding me?

Can't we even put 50 pounds of rock salt on the buses when conditions like this are expected?

How much trouble is that?

There's a lot of things that could of been done better. Many would criticize and say that hindsight is 20/20 and it's easy to judge now.

However let's look at what's next eh? People's old lawn and garden furniture saving parking places on the street. Did anyone hear an announcement not to do it and what the penalty would be for doing it?

The city is looking for ways of generating revenue right? Someone puts their jink out to save a parking place they get fined.

Stop the b.s. They're creating a hazard. You better have some warming buses ready to roll too with the subzero stuff on the way

So, now all cars, on both sides of the street, are plowed in above the top of the wheelwells. It's gonna be a fun day.

What is the function of Mayor's Chief Of Staff? I thought they run the daily activities of the Mayor, not make the final decision on whether to close Lake Shore Drive. That's why Chicago is so fucked up. We have a Traffic Unit assigned to patrol LSD, handle accidents and medical emergencies, and a POLICE Commander in charge of this Unit. Logic would be that this unit and commander should of been making the call if LSD was safe for traveling motorist to be on during the blizzard. The fucking Mayor Chief of Staff made that decision? Shouldn't the Traffic Unit Commander made that call, who in turn notifies the Superintendent, who in turn notifies the Mayor Chief of Staff, who then notifies the Mayor. That should be the roll of the Mayor Chief of staff and nothing more, but in the laughing stock of a city that's how shit rolls. Since when does CPD need permission from the Mayor Chief of Staff to close any Chicago street during a emergency?

One word Answer: BYRNE!
Lil' Tommy Byrne, despite the finger pointing, is in charge of S&S and has the final call.
But, Lil' Tommy apparently is heavier than Orosco, who threw himself on the sword (actually Lil' Tommy pushed him) and Orosco wears the jacket for the major screw-up including LSD.
Aaaah, politics as usual in Chicago!
P.S. Even shortshanks was afraid to appear at the news conference as Lil' Tommy wasn't through shoving (other) people under da' bus.

What made them think it would be different than years past? Oh Tommy Burn wasn't in charge then. A Chicago firefighter was attacked this afternoon after he approached a car blocking traffic on a South Side street, authorities said.
The fire crew from Engine 54 was on their way to a call when their fire truck was stopped by a car blocking traffic in the 7300 block of South Lafayette Avenue at about 5:20 p.m., Chicago police said.

When the 52-year-old firefighter approached the vehicle, a passenger became irate and stepped out to confront him, police spokesman Dan O'Brien said.

The passenger then struck the fireman and got back into the car, which fled the scene, O'Brien said.

The fireman was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, where he was listed in good condition, according to police and fire officials.

The vehicle that fled the scene was described as a 1995 Buick sedan. No arrests had been made Wednesday night.

I don't understand why, when a plow truck is leaving their barn and have to drive down a side street, they don't drop their plow and get rid of the snow. They're driving over it, so plow it on the way to a main st.

I am so proud to say, the people and kids on our block shoveled and snow-blowed the street and alley. It reminded me of 1967.

FYI
In 1979, the Jane Byrne snow storm, citizens were directed to remove their cars from city streets and park them in school yards. Apparently, no one figured that it had snowed in the school yards too. With no place to put their cars it was another strike against Bilandic. The school yard plowing may be in response to what happened in 1979. Unfortunately, they failed to remember what occurred on LSD in 1979 and 1967.
I know it's hard for egoists to understand, but most of this stuff has happened before. You know that thing about not knowing history and repeating it.

I must disagree on one aspect. While the Drive most assuredly should have been shut down prior to the storm, the response to the aftermath was excellent. I was there in a support manner, blocking an entrance to the Drive. The police, fire, oemc and ss response was unreal. Dozens of fire and ems trucks were there to help citizens out of their vehicles. Streets and sans towing out cars that were accessible. Citizens that stayed with their cars and still had gas were allowed to drive away once the snow around their vehicle was cleared. Warming buses, coppers doing traffic control and assisting fire personnel. It was a pretty organized response, albeit after the fact. I am no disaster expert, but in my humble opinion, we (everyone that was there to get people out and remove the cars) did a pretty darn good job.

The only two who can formulate a sentence is Hoff and Orozco.

Shortshanks just said he didn't speak yesterday because he didn't have to, because he trusts his department heads and he doesn't control any department in this city, and he lets the department heads run their department without his interference.

Weis walked in late in a brown suit and appeared to be limping or carrying a load in his pants.

I think the drivers should take at least half of the blame. It was a blizzard, the precise time it was to start was given, and people still drove to work and avoided metra and the cta. Why do we continuously have to be the nanny state. I bet a lot of people learned a valuable lesson Tuesday. Now those that were trapped on buses have a legitimate beef....

What the F*** would you have done! What if a semi jack-knifed on the Dan Ryan @ 18th Street at 6:45 pm on Tuesday and 6,000 cars backed up.I suppose Orozco, Hoff, and Byrne should have known and had the Ryan shut down by 5:30 because something like this could have happened. At least Orozco had the balls to stand up and say that it was his decision to leave the Drive open. Smart ass Goudie asks who are you to make the decision. Orozco has more real world experiernce than any of the political hacks downtown. Noone could have forseen that an articulated bus was going to jacknife at North Ave.

I think people should be telling that little pimp Chuck Goudie and the rest of the media to take a flying fuck. What arrogance to stand down there and criticize people who have been working 36-48 straight hours. The police, fire, streets and san cdot people worked there asses off. It wasn't an equipment failure. It wasn't planning failure. It wasn't human failure. It was the third largest snow storm to ever hit the third largest city in the country in the middle of rush hour.

Maybe people should take a little responsibility for themselves for a change. Everybody kenw all day that there might be problems on the Drive. But Fuck the world. I'm getting on the Drive and you better fix it for me.

And no I'm not related to any of the people mentioned above. Just a retired copper sick of listening to all of the whining.

"eek!whodat? at 11:48 AM February 03, 2011

Daley is trying to put the arm on the airlines to keep the "da deeze, dem & doze guyz" err... construction companies that contributed lotsa money to Daley over the years in the form of "campaign contributions" and kick-backs. While essential city services go begging for money and manpower, construction is moving along just fine. You want to know what happened to billions in tax payer treasury, look at these construction companies and you'll see ties to Crime King Shorty by blood, neighborhood roots and mutual desire to become multi-millionaires on the tax payer dime. Between (lowball estimates) $12 Billion to $15 Billion dollars has gone *poof* since Crime King ascended the throne of Chicago in 1989. The local media obediently looks the other way. Local law enforcement and investigative bodies are lousy with individuals who owe allegiance to Crime King Shorty. Local and state judiciary are full of appointees who owe their everything to Crime King Shorty & the criminal cabal known as Daley Inc. The tentacles of Daley Inc. reach all the way to the White House where their protege' is ensconced in order to stymie any meaningful snooping by the feds. The random flunky and fall guy gets trotted out for ritual public sacrifice under the guise of "weeding out corruption." No worries. Brother Bill is in D.C. to protect the interests of Daley Inc. The airlines will obey."

Raymond Orozco is a suckhole. I like how he deflected the blame for the LSD debacle. Mustn't let the short-one get egg on his face.

Watching the news conference Wednesday afternoon, you could see all the department heads making excuses regarding LSD. It reminded me of a megalomaniac from the 1940's. None of his "department" heads were willing to tell him the truth for fear of losing their "jobs."

I could just see the short one telling them, 'keep the drive open' and even though some may have disagreed they all were to scared to tell shorty no.

One last thing. Today I heared on my scanner, that department of revenue personnel were writing the towed LSD cars tickets. A policeman told the dispatcher this. I never heard the out come. Nothing like a kick in the face to go with being stuck for hours.

Thank You Chicago!

So tired of the media spin and the city hall apologist on this.

Look... the REAL issue is not whether the drive was closed down soon enough. That's being used as a distraction,

The REAL issue is where the cities resources were deployed.

Plowing around schools that would be closed for two days as a first priority while not only LSD was getting blasted but many first responder parking lots and the streets around them as well is unacceptable.

Oh and blaming the people that drove on LSD.

Maybe the city should of led by example.

It was a bus that caused the problem. Why did they allow the buses on the drive under these conditions.

Wanna call the people stupid and maybe so -- but what's the cities excuse if they're so smart?

Hey the buses are on there it must be okay right, says Joe citizen?

Anyway, More importantly what caused the bus to jack-knife and how many salt trucks/plows were committed to the drive prior to the accident that shut it down!

LSD is 18 miles from end to end. At 18 MPH you can put 6 plows on it spaced 20 minutes apart in both directions. If they were unable to keep up with what was blowing around it should of been shut down in less than 20 minutes.

But, no. The trucks were doing schools instead right? We really dodged a bullet here IMO.

Communications with the taxpayers was horrendous.

The best thing that happened was the decision to rent snowmobiles and it remains to be seen if that doesn't have some clout connected kick back scam tied to it too.

However I'll give 'em the benefit of the doubt on whomever made that decision for now. Well done!

Those are just some of the real questions. Not to mention that this LSD issue has the media totally distracted that some firehouses with equipment that they could not get out of the barn because of the [ppr decisions.

Not a word on that in the media!

I'm sick of hearing the response to why the side streets in some areas are still not done today.

The apologist throw out a big number and say: "Hey Chicago has over 3,000 miles of streets...give the city a break"

To that I say we pay taxes and the city also has over 300 pieces of snow removal equipment.

I want to know where they are and what they're doing. Haven't been here that's for sure.

Look, do the math.

The city has 3,000 miles of streets and 300 pieces of equipment. How long does it take a plow to make a ten mile pass...three days?

Think about it.

Good rant, but Traffic does not have a commander, it has a Lt, and a very good one.

Frankly, I would hope my alderman's street or alley was plowed. I WANT Orozco and Byrne and the supe (if we actually had a real one) to be able to get to their critical jobs.

You think you've got complaints now? Just imagine the complaints if Orozco or Hoff couldn't get to his workplace to DO his job.

I want my alderman driving up slippery streets, getting to his office, fielding phone calls and directing ward operations, not lounging in his jammies, watching vintage movies, sipping hot chocolate in front of his fireplace at home.

Now, I'm as cranky as most people when it comes to favoritism, but this isn't favoritism; it's being practical. The guy who runs the show needs to be able to get there to actually do the job. Be realistic.

Channel 7 News got out and drove around and found out what we all know anyway; all the streets aldermen live on are scraped clean while everything else around looks like Siberia.

The high point was when they caught Alderman Sandy Jackson up in the passenger seat of a city plow, directing snow removal operations in front of her house.

She didn't miss a beat. B---h climbed right down out of that cab and began demanding "an investigation as to how these resources are allocated!"

Unbelievable.

It was all over the news well before the storm hit that waves would hit LSD. It was stupidity on both sides, drivers and the city, to drive on it and not shut it down.

2/03/2011 12:55:00 AM

Waves???? There weren't ANY waves. the lake was actually quite calm. look at the photos. It was only snow. if youre going to Monday Morning quarterback from your easy chair slick, AT LEAST YOU SHOULD HAVE A GENERAL IDEA OF WHAT YOURE TALKING ABOUT. You personify what is wrong with our department.

2/03/2011 06:26:00 AM
==
You need a reading comprehension course. And an attitude adjustment.

The reports were that there could be huge waves overcoming the drive. The reports were that there would be high winds and extreme snowfall amounts. Therefore, the drive should not have been allowed to stay open.

You don't wait for the disaster to happen before you act. You behave proactively. That's called PLANNING.

Just because there weren't any WAVES, it was apparently okay, by YOUR reckoning, to have left the Drive open. Let's just dismiss the fact that 50mph winds, driving sleet and snow, water spray and bitter temperatures WERE occurring, and DID affect the surface of Lake Shore Drive.

With the Drive left open, what happened out there was inevitable. Had it been closed, it was completely avoidable.

You sound like the PERFECT city planner. No brains.

Call the Village of Skokie and ask if they'll help.

Seriously.

They might have some equipment available after they get done plowing out their alleys tonight. The streets are already done.

Call Channel 7 or someone and let them know too, if you can get something going. This'd make a hell of an embarassing story.

In the Area 2/ 005th District lot, hats off to Capt J. O'D., Sgt J.S. and his Tact guys, 3 Watch street personnel and the Gang Enforcement guys. Hours of work. Cars moved back and forth so some of the lot could be plowed. Capt J. O'D. was out there with his snowblower. The desk crew could have chipped in to help and so could have the Area 2 Detectives.

2/03/2011 08:18:00 AM

So the district functions in spite of Commander Ball's complete incompetence. Congratulations! You have again hidden your commander's incompetence by doing the work he failed to do.

It is the commander's job to organize movement of the squads so the lot can be properly plowed. What does he do? Once his spot was plowed by Motor Maintenance, he went home.

His failures are not brought to light because of the watch's interference.

The only way to make change is to allow failure.

Shoveled 6 hours to get out of my garage facing an alley to try to keep the street clear for the plow. What a mistake. Next time, I will just park in the center of the street and get a free re-lo tow to a local lot.

It's 6:50pm on Thur. and still NO city plow down my street. But just saw the news where the mayor and most aldermen had their streets and ALLEYS plowed before the snow officially ended. This is total BULL.

Can't feel sorry for the idiots on LSD as they had fair warning to avoid... 60+ mph winds, etc. Why would you want to drive along a body of water with 18foot waves predicted? Duh!

Daley really screwed it again.

City doesn't always blow it --

Just now saw on Channel 11 "Chicago Tonight" -- film of a CFD paramedic run using one of the snowmobiles. They had to get a guy out of an impassable side street to the ambulance which could not get any closer than two blocks away.

They zipped right up the sidewalk with all their gear, stabilized the patient, bundled him into the yellow Stokes stretcher, and towed the stretcher right back down the walk towards the main street, just slicker than grease and no problem.

I did not catch a location on this, but there was a "Lt. Dietz" in the picture.

"We're there when you need us."

Great job, guys!

WHO NEEDS THE CITY? When the citizens band together to clear the street. Thanks to all that came out and helped.

++++++++++++++++++++++

We did the same thing. Neighbors working together for the common good. We do it every time, just like so many others.

That said, we should not have to do that. We pay taxes for these services. I know, I know it was an unusual event. But that's when we need the services to kick in. Shovel our sidewalks, absolutely. Dig out the cars, ok, I'll give you that too. But the street? Alleys? Cars stuck on the drive for 24-36 hours? That's horseshit.

The city saying that this was an unusual event and we have to be patient? How about during the next Bulls riot (an example) we tell the citizens (and I use the term loosely) "listen, this is an unusual event, please be patient". Can you imagine? Just like this event, the public needs us when the shit hits the fan. Well the snow hit the fan, and I want some effin service.

And while I am on this, and repeating what others have said, why so many bosses. Even the Joint Chiefs of Staff have a leader. And I'm not talking about shanks. There should be one person (a trained professional, not a political hack) responsible for decisions. And those decisions should be made with the welfare of the public in mind, not CYA and I want to protect my spot as the guiding principles.
Ah never mind, I guess I am dreaming.

Want an example? Sgt. Haymaker. Salt? No salt? Close the ramps? Leave them open? Sorry Haymaker family, we couldn't reach a consensus and now your husband, father and all around good man is dead.

One more thing. Again as has been mentioned before, if the city can't handle a snowstorm, we would be completely fucked during a terrorist event. Completely fucked.

Mr. and Mrs. Citizen, you have no idea of the level of dysfunction.

No one is commenting on the job that was done by police and fire personnel. We are all trained, dedicated workers that always do what is needed with everyone elses safety our priority.

The problem is that lsd should have been shut down prior to rush hour, it was already noted that the lake was cresting 18ft waves.

A detour should have been opened(after all lsd has been here for some time and I am assuming alternate routes are pre-arranged)
The detour being a priority with plows and salt trucks.

Imagine if that lightning ignited a transformer and a large fire ensued.

Imagine if a terrorist attack or some sort of uprising took place.

All the personnel clogged up on lsd,the same personnel(fire)that handle the high rises.

Fire and police having to respond from all areas of the city, and we all know how difficult it was to drive.

It was a huge error that thankfully went well...no thanks to the city govt morons but all the credit goes to the dedicated police, fire and s&s personnel with boots on the ground.

All of us undercompensated, overtaxed, unappreciated civil servants that risked our lives to help the selfish, close minded, unthinking citizens.

That's not all I have to say.

Now the taxpayers have to pay for the mistakes of the anointed and clouted.
The mistakes of the sup of streets and san incurred the extra cost of towing of all the vehicles abandoned on LSD, and the cost of the Chicago towing website, and the salaries (over time)of the tow drivers, bus drivers and our great Fire Dept and medics. Not to mention the salaries of other first responders. Oh yea. didn't they give the towed cars and owners FREE gas? Compliments of who?

Well check it out. here

This is representative of the poor communications from the city that I've been ranting about here.

How about some tech savvy aldermen eh? This is not acceptable.

How long does it take to show you care about the people in your ward?

I don't care if you're driving around checking the streets or what you're doing -- how long does it take to change a voice mail greeting to communicate and aid your constituents.

I'll wager some of these elected officials haven't changed or even set up a voice mail greeting message since they've been put in office. Hey guys YOU'RE PUBLIC SERVANTS. You need to communicate of leave.

Buy, or borrow, a shovel. There's over a hundred feet between my back door and my alley. Surprise! I have to shovel the walk, all by myself, in order to take out the trash.

Garbage trucks are only supposed to tamp down the snow by driving through. (I'm assuming you're new to the city?) Some neighborhoods, they'll send a truck through, but your gangway (that's the sidewalk alongside your house that goes to the alley) will be plowed in, either way, even if it's just a neighbor who snowblows the entire alley.

No matter what pushes the snow against your garage door, you're on your own there, too.

Live in the 39th Ward, saw or should I say heard our first City Truck at around 2200 hours. The truck was blowing the horn because he could not get down our street, due to cars parked. The thing here is we/neighbors plowed our own street yesterday...knew we could not wait for the city. Our alleys are impassable(I know they are not plowed) but this should be the exception(some people have medical emergency needs). Had a senior citizen told by a staff member (from Alderperson's Office) have to do it yourself! Not quite the answer to give when there is an election around the corner. That truck that did nothing on our block could have just dropped the blade in the alley! Hell give me the truck and overtime!

For me it's a no brainer... close The Drive. What's the risk? More traffic? At least you have the ability to take another street.

All they had to do was ask any Copper, Firefighter, plow/tow driver what to do and run with it!

Big ones, and made of brass...

Bravado and bullshit. She's running, opposed by five others, and scared for her political life. It was a cheap, easy way to get some publicity for her lagging campaign.

Her husband has reached the pinnacle of his political career and is careening downward. She is iffy, at best, for her aldermanic seat.

Couldn't happen to a better couple.

In 024, the commander was out shoveling with the rest of us and the midnight captain was pushing a PPOs vehicle out of the snow. Nice display that no matter what uniform you wear, we're all just a brotherhood.

Apparently there is some sort of Streets & San strike going on and we are in the middle of it. Plows went down side streets but plowed in cars and left mounds in front of driveways that will take the heat of summer to melt. This is absolutely ridiculous. Come on - we know you guys aren't going to have jobs in a few months but do we all have to suffer in the meantime?

Just saw J-Fled on the OEMC press conference update on WGN news and can't believe that goof can put on a suit & tie for that but can't wear one for any other police function! And is it me or did his head get bigger?!

Final figure --

The city is apparently going to return the rental snowmobiles, as the streets are officially all passable by now.

Could have fooled me.

During the time we had them, however, CFD reports over 500 runs made with the snowmobiles.

This should become a permanent item on the city "TO DO" list when storms like this approach.

CFD chief Hoff called the operation "a home run -- lives were saved."

You already paid the city. They won't come across? Take the garbage out -- to an affluent neighborhood with better connections that's all plowed and nice. Quietly put it on the curb and then leave.

O.T. My garage has over 3 and a half feet of snow in the alley do plows go thru alleys? I called 311 and they said that they do not plow alleys that they only make tracks. Is that so? Does anyone know a snow removal service I cant even take the garbage out what to do what to do? Not a cop

Go to Craig's list and look up snow removal but only people with a bobcat. Some will do it for $25.00 a garage and then a flat rate for the alley. I got all of my neighbors together, we pitched in and got the alley cleared. I had snow three quarters up my door that had frozen into a solid block.

Tommy Byrne, you've been a political hack your entire life!!! Why should things change now, but at least don't throw anyone else in front of another bus... You're the one that mandated that Lake Shore Drive remain open... once a piece of shit, always a piece of shit... MAN UP!

I remember the blizzard of '67, although i was in 8th grade... I remember the blizzard of '79, three man beat cars, and the end of Bilandek... But who remembers the blizzard of '99??? No one, because it was handled so well, no one was inconvenienced. Only problem is that now no one cares, and there's no one that knows what he/she is doing that can get us through this!

Thanks Richie... you and your cronies made their millions,

'Anybody in SWAT wanna comment on this? Anybody got the A&As to send to SCC when we Ray is working his side job while he's suppose to be in Homan Square.'

this is the same BS that RayRay bounced out of SOS/SWAT by then-Deputy Supt. John Risley a few years back. No other Cmdr of that unit was willing to bring RayRay back there until Roussell took the helm
(another J-Fled flunkie). So it's not surprising that RayRay is going back to his old ways, with 3M again running interference for him. Let's hope we get a new Supt. who will kick these imposters out of the CPD once and for all.

Its So Laz and CPM can start enforcing Pay Boxes on Saturday you dork...why else have a City worker clean around a Pay Box?
---

It would be a shame if snow and plows and all were to do any damage to any of those payboxes. Just saying. LAZ probably has a clause in there forcing the City (us) to pay in case of decreased revenues following a snow storm.

Tommy Byrne became a police officer in 1970, in 1970 the height requirement was 5-10, now you do the math, is Tommy Byrne 5-10 or maybe did he know someone " Jack Byrne".

Not much for posting but I have to agree with others who have noticed how people in some area's of the city were out shoveling even as the snow was still coming down trying to stay ahead of it . While some areas just do nothing but complain and wait for someone to come and bail them out.Can only say LOVE my neighbors we plowed shoveled and partied (got some great pic's too.).

Again what you fail to realize is that the bosses may have a bullshit degree of some sorts but in reality they talk and act like the furthest they went was 8th grade.

That's where we disagree. Don't insult an 8th grader like that. I think they all spoke like they quit school right at the first grade level.

Can't feel sorry for the idiots on LSD as they had fair warning to avoid... 60+ mph winds, etc. Why would you want to drive along a body of water with 18foot waves predicted? Duh!

Duh! It's a city's responsibility to shut a road down if they know we're expecting 18 foot waves. Never would have happened if the fucking idiots at the top did their job and shut it down. They risked the safety of citizens, police and firemen.

I don't understand why, when a plow truck is leaving their barn and have to drive down a side street, they don't drop their plow and get rid of the snow. They're driving over it, so plow it on the way to a main st.

It's because they don't want to kill the job. The longer it takes to remove the snow the more OT they can rack up.
