This About Sums it Up

From the comment section:
  • Already I am sick of hearing about the "Great Blizzard of 2011"

    "Record setting"
    "Life threatening"
    "Top snowstorm of ALL TIME"
"Never before in the course of human events..."

Fucking blow me already, 15 inches of snow and some wind. That's all. Big fucking deal.

WGN this morning was struggling to find enough superlatives to describe this alleged cataclysmic event. It got up to Major Major Storm before I had to vomit. Maybe they will add a third Major on there before noon.

They panned endlessly on the cars marooned in the life threatening wilderness of.... Lake Shore Drive, a mere few feet away!

Then they found two people stumbling and falling and getting up and stumbling some more and zoomed in on them. Were they the latest to be miraculously rescued from death's door in this unholy Perfect Mother of Storm of Storms?

No, they were just another news crew, cameraman and junior junior anchor with microphone in hand attempting to jump the fence onto LSD (Byrne's Alley) to interview some "survivors" of the Blizzard of Blizzards.

Were any still alive? Had they started eating each other yet? How many dead were in those cars? What heart rending tales could they tell?

    Who knows, who cares?

They were busy making stories of each other covering the MegaStorm of the Millenium.

Get a life. Storm of '67 still rules, '79 is close second, '99 was worse than this.

Another cup of coffee and then back to nap time and then I will watch the Godfather trilogy. I haven't seen that since I had the flu a few years ago. And after that, the Clint Eastwood spaghetti western trio, and no I am not talking about former Italian American Streets & San Department Heads.

As far as storms go, I wouldn't put this in the top ten. In hype, yes, it is at the top, Numero Uno in Bullshit.

The wind whistles, the coyotes howl, the couch calls out it's seductive siren song...
Damn, that's almost poetry. Nicely written "anonymous."

How about those clown reporters driving around in cars like a pack of idiots. These people have nothing better to do than hype up a snow storm?

I guess not, since Daley keeps them on a short leash. They never had the balls to call him on his bullshit and they'll be even worse when that bastard Rahm gets in.

It's not hard to keep cowards in line.

Channel 9 News is deteriorating since they tore down the wall between their radio and TV operations, let in the horrible, aging Garry Meier, started walking around the studio with wobbly handheld cameras to show you what neat computers they have, and in general turned into one big amorphous touchy-feely media glob.

WGN Radio people were always so full of themselves they were fit to burst, and now it's in the TV operation as well. Chat, chat, chat. I don't CARE what kind of hat Lourdes Duarte is going to wear tonight.

Tom Skilling is rumored to be the highest-paid meteorologist in the country. If/when he goes, I go. He's the only reason I tune to 9 at all.

Today they had Randy Belisomo and crew stuck in some motel out in Indiana because of the bad weather. Video of their drinking coffee in the coffee shop, reclining on beds with laptops and talking into cell phones IS NOT NEWS.

Grow up, kids.

I was stuck working in that shit for 16 hours and it really fucking sucked. I wasn't alive in 67. Don't remember much about the 70's Didn't live here in 99. But I worked a double, then spent an hour trying to get my car out of the lot, 45 minute ride home then got stuck a block away from home. Another friggin hour trying to get my car out of the middle of the street so plows can get by. Got very few hours sleep then had to get a ride back to work. It wasn't the "day after tomorrow" but it still sucked and it's not over its still a pain in the ass to go anywhere. Oh 67, 79, 99, 2011 Still aint shit compared to what people on the east coast and other sections of the country go through a couple times a year.

The head of Chicago's emergency center should step down.

'67 was bigger.

City and suburb-wide, you had snow up to the drivers window of your car and drifting up to the top of the garage door or gable of your home.

This storm had higher winds perhaps and no doubt working in it and after was a bitch but the severity of this one was pretty hyped compared to past storms.

I remember '67 quite well. Snow drifts as high as the roof of our one storey house, roads clogged, grocery store lines to the back of the store where the meat was, or should have been, since all meat was sold. All dairy products and bread gone.

'79 was not quite as bad, but it was a pain in the ass. The suburbs had it easier because most of them have enough parking so the streets weren't full of cars. Side streets in the city were terrible for over a week afterwards. If you needed chairs, you could get them easy from the 'dibs' that were out.

'99 was a blip, and this shit we're dealing with now is better only because it was short and there are more snowblowers in circulation. My block had 7 of them going and we cleared it out in a day.

Plowing school parking lots when school is canceled? Crazy. Front end loaders driving down my block with their buckets up? Also crazy. I'm sure if you check the blocks of our alderman and other city officials they'll be pristine.

In a few weeks, the lemmings will have forgotten and his highness Rahm will be installed.

I have to agree with this post. Back in the 67 storm, We walked home from school in what was already 10 inches of snow. The next day, my sister and I were sent by my mother to walk 10 blocks to the grocery store to get bread, milk., etc. We were 12 and 13 years old.Don't see kids doing that nowadays. Too much hooked into smart phones, facebook, and TV watching 'American Idol'.
Went to work on Wednesday, the day of the storm at HQ's. It was a ghosttown at HQ. Yea, I probably could of stayed home, but I am the police, albeit in an office environment, and made it a challenge to see if I can get to work. Like a drill, a drill in preparation for something more serious that will occur in this country, a terrorist attack. It will happen again. No one knows where and when. Couldn't drive, due to car stuck in the preplowed street. But used my 2 feet to walk 3 quarters of a mile to get on a train, then transfer onto a bus to get to work. Not bragging, but just pointing out that we got to have back up plans to get to work. Afterall, we are the police, we don't work at Shoe Carnival. That is why it is important for the police to keep physically fit also. Got to be prepared for the next 9-11. The enemy is not soft, they are determined, and training every day. God Bless the guys and girls in patrol, the least glamorous, but the toughest job on this department. I have the upmost respect for you. God Bless our soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, for fighting the enemy on foreign soil.

'99 was worse? What are you smoking, SCC?

I don't think so. I was working that at O'Hare that day in '99, and they were able to keep a runway open for international flights, two of which were mine.

There was no way they could have conducted flight ops on Tuesday.

Not that windy in '99, the snow was as light and fluffy as anything I've ever seen.

This storm, as far as intensity goes, was the worst I've ever experienced. '67 was pretty bad, but forecasting wasn't as sophisticated back then. '79 was a walk in the park.

This storm was top to bottom way worse than any of them. You usually see some slackening off on the outer edges of most storms. This one packed a wallop from the middle of it to the outer bands.

God help us. Skilling must have been taking a rest tonight; they put on some woman named "Duffy Atkins" in his stead. Talk about imprecise diction, swallowed words, and a peculiar regional accent. Is she Canadian or something? I'm glad to hear she's normally on CLTV, which I never see.

None of you built Snowmen or Snow Families, tried scientific experiments like throwing very hot water on the snow to compare shoveling vs hot water? Hot water solves the problem of where to put the snow, while putting gigantic containers to catch the falling snow, adding sugar, milk and vanilla flavor will make tons of yummy ice cream to eat all day, tons of yummy ice cream at a good price, very nice in this economy.

This time I did not have to work, if I did have to work, I would have taken public transportation, and the wind, I tied my hat on tighter and testted my strength against the wind strength.

I was a kid in '67 but I remember is pretty well. The snow was so deep on the side streets, no cars could pass and they didn't get plowed for a couple of days. Someone on the block had a heart attack and neighbors had to carry him 2 blocks to a major intersection b/c the ambulance couldn't get down the street.

'79 was bad because it kept snowing for about 2 weeks. The city couldn't figure out what to do with it all. My side street stayed unpassable for most of that time. People had to park on the main street and walk blocks to their houses. My mother's garage roof caved in -- on top of the car that couldn't be driven out.

'99 was over quickly. No big deal at all.

I would agree with those that said that the high winds made this a particularly dangerous storm. It isn't just the snow totals that count. Glad I was off and able to stay home until it was over.
