Taste to Continue Losing Money

  • Mayor Daley’s plan to privatize the Taste of Chicago has fallen flat.

After declaring that Chicago’s premier lakefront festival would “always be free,” Daley on Tuesday rejected a lone bidder’s revised proposal to charge a $10 admission fee to the Taste.

Celebrate Chicago LLC initially proposed a $20 entrance fee with $10 rebated to patrons in the form of food and beverage tickets. The proposed fee was cut in half to appease Daley, but it was not enough.

  • Despite $7 million in losses over the last three years, the city now plans to keep the Taste and six other lakefront festivals in-house.
Gee, giant piles of cash flowing through unmonitored counting rooms - why would the city even think of privatizing something like that? If it wasn't making some connected individuals some serious coin, it wouldn't exist in Chicago.

Daley's learning the painful lesson of being a lame duck. Once he's gone, some of these issues can be addressed.

As it stands, I wouldn't go near Taste with a mile-long pole. If they institute an admission fee, I'll consider it. Once you've worked a few of them and seen how dangerous it can really be, you tend to avoid these big venues. A reasonable admission fee might affect my view on that.

I admit, I drive to Milwaukee for their fest at least once each season, sometime twice. It's clean, well-controlled and a genuinely pleasant experience.

Not the least bit of an issue to me. Been there for 16 years and wouldn't even dream of going there if I was not being paid.

Just don't have the Taste anymore for awhile. Who needs it? It's just a source for the thieving Chicago Politicians to skim money from, and an outdated concept anyway.

Once the little jagalini is gone they can move towards making the appropriate changes in admissions fees.

Fuck the taste. you can bet if there was an admission that there would be free coupons for the drainers of society. Just another way to get my money to pay for someone else. I worked enough of them. Let the roving nitwits and the tourists have it.

I work on Jackson near State, and try to take vacation during the Taste. Christ, the people who get off the train! They are terrifying. You could run bets on how many prison neck tats and teardrops you can count in half an hour. Charge admission or shut it down.
