Two-Wheel Drive

We've covered this before, but never was it more evident than yesterday how short sighted this decision was. Even a four-wheel-drive vehicle per sector would have been an improvement over what we saw today.

Did everyone catch the citywide broadcasts that there was no R-service available and if you got stuck, your sergeant had to call for a tow with no ETA? That was a brilliant bit of planning there - hope the previous watch remembered to fill up the tank.

And just in case you forgot, this is what J-Fled was driving today while you skidded across miles of almost plowed roads and unsalted pavement:

And while we're aware that J-Fled probably had little to do with the choice of two-wheel-drive SUVs, but if he wants to claim credit for getting us the new vehicles, he can damn well accept the blame for getting us crappy ones.

I'll give J-Fled this much. He learned how to just tell a bunch of lies to the media knowing full well that he won't be called on it. He got that from Daley.

When they asked about the Tahoes, he just pulled a bunch of bullshit out of his ass and they never even called him on it. All specialized units got new vehicles? Please. Pursuit packages when we can't pursue? Great.

Then again, the Chicago media makes Pravda look like an honest publication. They are so bought and paid for by the Machine it's pathetic. If you think you live in a free country while residing in Chicago, you're either blind or retarded.

On every Tahoe is a small piece of plastic under the front bumper that goes from side to side called an "air dam." This item directs oncoming air downward in order to make the rough, uneven bottom of the vehicle a little more aerodynamic. There isn't a single Tahoe in my district that still has its air dam intact. EVERY one of the SUVs in an entire police district has been crushed or ripped away by the immature "hey...it's not MY car" attitude. Four wheel drive vehicles have to be a little higher since those vehicles have two transmissions and a transfer case. What do you think would happen to those vehicles if the youngsters could slam those vehicles across speed bumps and uneven pavement? Half of them would be in the shop or destroyed completely.

The 4-on-2-off schedule means that, due to the overlapping watches, there is no more "regular cars" assigned to each particular beat. Now the guys that are rough on cars get to be rough on ALL of the cars, knowing that if they tear up one car they can just take out a different car tomorrow.

CPD has never had 4-wheel-drive cars. They give us new Tahoes and these guys can't wait to wreck these vehicles. What do you think they'd do to the 4WD variant?

Maybe the city should buy one or two 4WD vehicles per district and see how long it takes the hotshots to drive them into the junkyard. Great power comes with great responsibility.

These last couple of posts sound like a fucking drama queen.... Everybody tuck your fucking skirts in and start acting like prima donnas. It snowed, it's a big city, it's not the first time side streets were not plowed, it ALWAYS takes a few days after a big storm to get to those and in the end if they don't, go out, grab a neighbor, and start clearing it instead of crying about it.

I heard J-Fled's comments at the OEMC press conference when he was asked about the "lack" of police response, as well as being questioned about the wisdom of using 2 wheel drive vehicles rather than 4wheel. He reverted to his double talk about available police vehicle packages and how well they have proven to work in other municipalities. He suggested that any vehicle can get stuck in these conditions and that the Chicago Police Department had the best equipment available. I reasonably expected him to come up with some canned response to this obvious question, but I was not prepared for him to tell an out and out, bald-faced lie. If he had any real concern about coppers and the general public, he would have realized that the vehicles we use without the benefit of 4-wheel drive could have resulted in serious injury or death to coppers and civilians, not to mention rendering us less than able to respond properly in these weather conditions.
I felt really bad hearing complaints from citizens who related they saw few if any Chicago Police officers engaged to help in this storm. Well, if we had more coppers, the correct vehicles and decent leadership things would have been much different.

They had to be pushed out by the residents who were shoveling out their own vehicles.

The point has already been made. Since we have, basically, a no-pursuit policy, why shouldn't we be driving 4x4s? This is Chicago; it has winters with snow - duh.

According to Chevy, the 2WD Police Tahoe PPV (Police Patrol Vehicle) is designed and tuned for high speed emergency operations, whereas the 4WD Tahoe SSV (Special Service Vehicle) has a regular production suspension and chassis configuration and is not intended for high speed emergency vehicle operations. Plus, the SSV costs $3k more.

If my district is any indication, POs have practically fallen over themselves trying to get the keys for a Tahoe instead of a Crown Vic after roll call. Now, when we get a historically bad snowstorm and it's nearly impossible to get around in any vehicle, we POs start turning on the Tahoes. Listen, I'm sure that many of us have noticed that Tahoes don't handle slippery roads as well as Crown Vics, but unless you were riding in Jody's snow tire-equipped Expedition EL (Extended Length), Tahoes AND Crown Vics were pretty much useless when the storm hit.

Like someone else suggested, if the Department bought one SSV for each sector or maybe even for the Sgts, we at least would have a fighting chance dealing with this extreme weather. Just remember, since the SSVs aren't intended for high speed emergency vehicle operations, the second some PO or Sgt rolls an SSV responding to a job and files a lawsuit against the Department and Chevy, he/she will be sh.. out of luck.

Most of the time I agree with you SCC however on this issue I beg to differ. The way people beat on squad cars there is little doubt in my mind that most 4wd trannies would be destroyed long before they even saw a storm like this because of some fool on the watch beating the crap out of it. The last time we had a storm like this was in 99. The real problem is the stupidity of people. Take LSD for instance ....would you have driven it Tues night? HELL NO! Just like you know better than to take your family to the taste of Chicago at night. I'm willing to bet most of the calls the P.O.'s had were bullshit. Dispatchers should have been telling callers to walk to the main thoroughfare to meet police. On a side note people have to help clean up a mess like this. Is it really the responsibility of the City to have all this cleaned up in 12 hours? NO, it's not. Just like it shouldn't be the City's responsibility to feed kids breakfast and lunch for free at school.
As everyone knows the main streets were in surprisingly good condition Wed. morning. As for the side streets most could be cleared to the point they are accessible if people would just pitch in. In my alley just about everyone cleared out the area behind their garage. The worst spot was the mouth of the alley and myself and two other neighbors cleared it with snowblowers in about 15 minutes. The entire sidewalk was cleared by residents too. We don't have "zombies" walking down the middle of the street because nobody shoveled.

Anyone beefing about having to park and walk to jobs must not have worked for the dept. too long. Plenty of times during a snow storm you have to walk to a job rather than get stuck. This is not the first nor will it be the last snow storm in our cities history. Tahoes, impalas, crowns or dodge chargers, they all get in high snow. Do the job you signed up for, use common sense, and you'll be fine.

JPUD stated the Tahoes have a police package suspension and were recommended by other departments that operate in snowy conditions. What does the stiffer or more rugged suspension provide traction for...hmmmm? HIGH SPEED TRACTION ON DRY PAVEMENT, (tires rated for performance, not conditions like rain/snow) nitwit.
What department make the recommendation, not CTA, not Sts & San, not US Postal.... maybe it was the Sales Dept of a south suburban Chevy dealer that contributed several thousands of dollars in campaign contributions to the Democrats over the years.
4 wheel drive adds around $2-3000 to the sticker. At a time when big truck sales were flat and gas prices high we bought a thousand or so at full sticker. Such a deal for a top heavy slip 'n slide vehicle that will go airborne upon impact. Not to mention blind spots, no room for gear, and the bulky light bar controls/pdt console that obstructs the (empty) gunrack.
Jpud - a legacy of embarrassment.

That being said; I was working afternoons, and then days in the snowfall of 1978/79. We had squad cars, rear wheel drive, and those old style tires, that would not grip.
We walked into the jobs. Side streets were blocked for weeks. We pushed each other out. We got struck a lot.
We had a great time, of it, and made the best of it. The trick is to pull together. We even had a car held down to pick up and take home people, who could not make it to work.

Though the majority of officers in our department displayed tenacity and dedication during this storm this cannot be said of all officers or civilian employees. The Tribune hasn't reported that huge numbers of dispatchers simply failed to come to work. This resulted in the dispatchers who showed up working huge shifts with little sleep. In my district maybe 15 to 20% of the officers tried calling in. Thank god the WC prohibited this. Funny the same ones who showed up were the kind of cops who put in a hard days work all the time. In my district, the losers who tried calling in were political hacks and suckasses with special easy spots.

uh, don't put it in 4x4 until needed.

'Is it really the responsibility of the City to have all this cleaned up in 12 hours?'

when we pay for city services through the nose, then yes, yes it is.

no, we only have zombies holding press conferences and talking out of their taxpayer fattened asses.

Some of the original Tahoes from a few years ago are 4x4. That's when they wer bought as "specialty" vehicles and not for general patrol.

---
Wrong. The old Tahoes were also rear-wheel drive.

Why spend the $$$ on 4 wheel drive vehicles for cops? They'll just smash them and tear them up too like they do most of their vehicles.

2/03/2011 09:36:00 AM

Ur right....so the next time we have another big snow and someone breaks in and decides to harm u or ur family and it takes us 20 min to get there because we have to park on a main street and then walk 2-3 blocks to the call ,,,DON T COMPLAIN WHY IT TOOK SO LONG...even the fire dept had to use snowmobiles because the ambl. couldn t go down the sreets.
The veh. are driven 24/7 on streets with some of the worst drivers in the country. They look that way because the city spends no money on parts to maintain them. So just keep ur VW driving liberal ass off a topic u know nothing about.

Personally, I'm glad that J-Fled had an assigned vehicle to get him and his entourage through the snow. I know that there's no way I would have gotten out of my tahoe to assist him if he had gotten stuck, and I'm sure thousands of my co-workers feel the same way; so it saved him yet another potential embarrassment, which we all know he's had plenty of over the past 3 years now, all of his own making.

The Tahoes are great sitting up high has Its advantages and having room helps too. I'm 6'2 sitting in a Vic (which Ford doesn't make anymore) with a cage blows Its like sitting in the Apollo command module. Plus u have to climb out of the Vic with your equipment getting stuck on everything, tahoe= a quick painless exit. Tahoes are better for collisions your legs aren't buried under the dash, and the department finally has real emergency equipment on them so the birds can see you coming. I like the tahoes learn to drive in the snow and you'll do great.

The last two nights my partner and I had to park on the main plowed road and walk 2 to 4 blocks to our jobs. Only in the city that works do we get rear wheel drive SUV's, no 4x4 option. What a joke!

ahhhhh young man. A good policeman never gets cold, tired or wet. you my friend take this job way to seriously. park your car on the main street, open your paper and wait 15 minutes... then come over the air and say... "squad, we walked down and cant make contact, unless you have a callback 19p" taadaaaa!!!!! im all for doing police work but not today... save the police work for another day... snow days like this is when we should be 100% reactive and dont do anything you dont have to do...

NICE but if its was a member of your family calling for help a sister or your daughter getting the shit beat out of them in a domestic you would be the first one to beef on the coppers who blew the job off.

No, no. Fleet just bought them crowns not cars. They will now officially wear the golden crowns upon their mishapen heads that they so mistakenly believe they deserve. This way taxpayers can openly observe these assinine, egotistical morons, most of whom don't even possess high school diplomas or the ability to spell diploma. Thank you.

2/03/2011 01:09:00 PM

We want the tahoes because they are more comfortable and have a radio. Not because they are good vehicles. More leg room is nice, anyone over 5'10" can appreciate the extra room the tahoes have. The tahoes are shit vehicles and we as a department should have 4wd on all police cars. If the shit hit the fan the other night you just had to kiss your ass good bye. Now go get me a drink spider.

We have six 4WD tahoe squads at the UCPD, but they are only operated by supervisors. And yes, they were all purchased with a 'police package' too.

Picardi harrassed females. Yes he did, that's right in 2009 or 10 whatever that backward dinosaur sexually harrassed females and a lawsuit was brought against the city that will end up costing millions. But heres the clincher. They moved him because a BUNCH of females were planning a spectacular surprise, ass-kicking for him. That's not a joke. True story and for all I know may still come to pass.
