Nicely Played Aldercreature!

  • Some side streets are plowed early and other neighborhoods have to wait a little longer. In this Intelligence Report: Why all Chicago side streets are not created equal.

A veteran employee at Chicago Streets and Sanitation says his department has a "priority list" of who gets plowed first. It is said to be unwritten but understood, and it features the names and home addresses of well-connected Chicago political figures and sometimes their families, including numerous current members of the City Council.
A list? Of whom gets plowed first? Can we rest assured it's firemen, police officers, bus drivers and other snow truck operators who in turn make sure the rest of the city gets the services it needs in a safe and timely manner?
  • Chicago aldermen live on 50 of the blocks. Right after a snowstorm, they could be the 50 cleanest blocks in the city.

On the street where 14th Ward Alderman Ed Burke lives, for the dean of the City Council and chairman of the finance committee, Streets and San had the road scraped clean by first thing Thursday morning. But not those on each side.

In the 2nd Ward, Alderman Bob Fioretti's street was plowed Thursday morning as well -- as was the home street of Alderman Leslie Hairston in the 5th Ward.

Golly. The aldercreatures. Surprise surprise. It's not like they couldn't delay a City Council meeting or something.

The kicker?
  • When the I-Team got to the 7th Ward, home of Alderman Sandi Jackson, to take some pictures of her plowed street, a Streets and Sanitation truck rolled up. And who was riding shotgun? Alderman Sandi Jackson, who said she was riding around all morning trying to help her constituents get clear streets.

Jackson said she wouldn't be surprised if Streets and San had a VIP list especially of wards that get favored treatment. Jackson is calling for an investigation by the city inspector general.

She pulls up in a f#$%ing snowplow, then has the audacity to demand an investigation into VIP lists? Pardon our laughter, but "hahahahahahahahahahahahaha."

Sandi's desperate. She's about to lose her aldermanic income and her cheating husband is going to lose his Congressional spot.

It's hard to be that high-maintenance without an income, so she's out there hustling the voters any way she can.

Hey, is Streets allowed to have citizens in their trucks? Just checkin'.

Does Ed Burke have a Twitter page, a Facebook page, a Youtube page?

I can't find them.

Doesn't he want to connect with his community? Other alderman do.

We know Ed's voice mail...well there was no voice mail greeting during the aldermen's snow day so what does that tell ya.

I didn't realize that the NIMS model had plows do aldermen's side streets well before police stations. I guess that getting coppers into the street during a critical incident takes a back seat. Took most of us a least an hour to get our cars into the street after roll call.

Streets and alleys have not been plowed, salted or cleared in anyway shape or form.

Today is Friday, day three, post blizard.

Ald. Zalewski had better be watching his back because if he thinks that by keeping the snow on the ground out here will prevent us from voting for his opponent, he is sadly mistaken.
They will come in droves to vote against you Mike.

Good point and not a bad campaign ploy for all those running for Alderman.

I don't know what it costs to hire a guy with a truck and a plow and maybe a small salt spreader for, oh, say, 10 or 12 hours, but picture this:

Dozens of voters out trying to dig out their cars and up pulls a tow truck with a plow attached, and maybe "Michael Carroll for 46th Ward Alderman" signs all over it. Candidate rides shot gun and spends the day pressing the flesh, plowing residential streets, jumping voters cars or pulling cars out from under side street snow drifts in the ward. It'd be more than the City is doing!

I would think for a grand or two, it would be doable and WELL worth it in terms of the good will and the buzz it would create among voters.

By the way, I read that Mike was out with a shovel digging out cars, fire hydrants and sidewalks. Not bad, but maybe needs to think BIGGER.

What was it again? Never let a crisis go to waste?

I live on O'Shea's block and it is not true, our street still looks like crap. It is down to one lane; if two cars are traveling down the block at the same time one has to back up. Getting stuck happens often. Our neighbors got out with their shovels and snow blowers and cleared our sidewalks, driveways and street.

My street is pretty nice. I live in the 41st Ward. We haven't seen a snow plow yet and its Friday morning. The residents on the block came out and shoveled/snow blew everything!!! My back, shoulders, stomach, and arms are still killing me from all the digging. I still made it to work by the way.

Fuck the city!!!! Learn from this debacle. Do things yourself!!!! We don't need the city and its bloated patronage government!!!! My body hurts but I feel great inside knowing we took care of each other. Amazing when fellow men help each other and not stab each other in the back.

How come the the citizens and neighbors cant do the same in these other neighborhoods. Why wait for the city government to spoon feed you when you can take care of things yourself. Oh that's right. Its because the people in the areas bitching about not getting plowed are the same ones with Link cards and high crime rates. go figure.

Eddy, the street that Congressman Mike Quigley lives on was the only street plowed in the neighborhood by Thursday morning. Nothing around it, next to it or even further west on the same block, just his block! Phone calls were left for an explanation, none given of course. Aldermans office was called as well. The first installment of property taxes just came out this week, a huge increase but we can't get our streets plowed! I had no issues on the time frame of plowing considering the storm until I saw that his street was plowed.

On a side note thank you to all the police officers that do so much for our city!

The Clearing neighborhood on the west end of the 023rd Ward is a war zone.

Streets and alleys have not been plowed, salted or cleared in anyway shape or form.

Time to get this right
since I work for S&S (29years) we have never plowed an Alley there are 2 reason for this
1) cant freaking fit a plow down an alley with all the carts
2) pushing snow up against your garage door is a bad idea that will cost you another garage
door a fence hell even fito might take a hit.

back in 1999 we did take the plows off the trucks and salted many of the alleys 5 days after the storm but then again in 99
we had high level bosses that did our job and understood what was going on. Today we have the
collage of coaches (OEMC) and some ex-cop (HOPE HE WAS A GOOD COP) as our commissioner who is freaking clueless.

as it stands right now our mains look like shit all over the place we have choked off main streets from 3 lanes down to 2 lanes
the laborers in 99 shoveled out CTA stops today they are picking up garbage in the alleys (clueless) while people stand in the freaking
street to catch a Bus (priceless) which all by itself is causing traffic problems (Monday will be interesting day)

next case: Police Parking lots we once did them now its done by Privates unless you call for us so please tell\ask your desk Sgt. to
call S&S for your parking lot before it stops snowing because you see how fast the collage of coaches gets its orders out to the salt spreader
(LSD Slap)

OT: I would like to take this opportunity to just say how proud I was to be a Chicago Cop......as we all know we have been under siege the last 3 years under a management that has just decimated OUR dept....many of us have been demoralized and feel that the dept. has hit rock bottom....what I witnessed, over this past blizzard, was that we ALL helped each other...just based on what I observed in the 001st district alone, was awesome, we like every other district/unit were buried...its obvious that getting rid of the building engineers has had an effect...the 001st district lots were rapidly becoming overwhelmed with snow....many many officers, Captains, Lts, Sgts...and civilians, all started shoveling the lots....we actually flagged down streets/sans plows and asked if they would help out, all the plows that we flagged down pulled off of their routes and started plowing our border streets(16th and 18th), along with patiently standing by , while we all moved squad cars from one side of the street , to the other, ALL the drivers, made pass after pass trying to help us out, many p.o's went to their personnal cars and grabbed small shovels and ALL pitched in....I also heard the same thing going on in 018...those p.o.'s were doing whatever they could to help each other, along with helping out on L.S.D....ALL OF US CITY WORKERS HELPED EACH OTHER...under the Daley regime...he has basically looted every dept. and stripped ALL of us down to nothing....but somehow, we still managed to pull together and help each other...you see one thing we ALL have in common, is that ALL depts....whether its streets/sans....police/fire..ect. have endured this jag off mayor's wrath...being that he has taken away days...and now wanting to go after our pensions...but still, we stick together and keep right on doing our jobs...I would just like to say....THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED GET US ALL GET THROUGH THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS....this current regime's days are winding down...none of us know what is going to happen to us after this EVIL EVIL MAYOR leaves, but one thing is for sure...HE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO BREAK OUR HUMAN SPIRIT OF COMMERODERY,...he may not pay for his transgressions in this life,....but I sure woudnt want to be him in the afterlife....GOD BLESS...STAY SAFE!!

Speaking of snow plows, here's one from the land of 023 3rd Watch, this is classic: P.O. on 3rd Watch does snow plowing on the side. Well the New 023 has a New parking garage, 4 levels. Well the 2nd,3rd and 4th level are covered in snow, virtually impassable. The first level for squads is semi passable. The new inlay brick roadway leading to the garage is NOT plowed nor the entrances to the sally-ports. So anyway, this 3rd Watch PO comes to work early, around 1330 hrs and starts to plow the garage and around the station for clear ingress and egress of both squads and personal vehicles. He uses his own vehicle, gas and time and his reward???? Take out the traffic car and work untill 2300 hrs. No plow the facility, and go home ,thanks for all youv'e done. No, no, no, get out and work a full tour and thanks for the 2-3 hrs of time you spent plowing the garage and the area around the station. No early duck, NOTHING!!!! You gotta love Captain TL, what a team player, only if your on his team.

WAY OFF TOPIC-

I can't believe I got a letter from the citywide team today, WTF? Bella's team and the Sheild's team are pitting against each other, are you guys politicians or cops? Are Bella and Frank D. really that afraid to go back to the Area or Patrol?
You guys(citywide) didn't do that much at contract time and your laziness has fucked over coppers, it's true but I won't bring up the incidents because it doesn't need to aired on an open site. So relax with all the "has had many successes..". You've had alot of failures too, ie. Sworn Affidavit, are you serious? The dept still keeps a log which is illegal but you've done nothing to fix it. Why not work with the States Attorney and put some weight behind the Affidavits and lock up the jagoff beefing liars? Oh, that might put you on the spot and cause a fight between the state and us? Guess what boys, there is already a rift because she (ALvarez)platformed to prosecute cops. How about for once during contract tme, we don't give up shit because we (CPD) are always getting the short end of the stick.
As for the Shield's team, stop it. You worked in Area 3! And you're going to tell the membership about being the Police and beefs? Now I will say I like what I heard at one of your meetings but that could be al smoke and mirrors as well. And stop with the pension shit, most of us have to get there first, mush. Focus on how you're not going to let the city fuck us while we're physically working, not when we retire. We get it, you have the pension thing down, now focus on the guys still pushing a beat car.
But overall, you guys are cops, not politicians. Stop the bs and fight for us, not a bigger check and car. I would love to take the big paychecks away from you guys. Standup and take those big paychecks away and see how much more you'll get done.
By the way, Sandi Jackson, we're watching you!

My far north 41st Ward street hasn't seen a plow as of Friday noon. Two way street with One lane of travel & not a single car parked on the street.
The Mailman was able to deliver the $5000 real estate tax bill though, but that's what I get for clearing the sidewalk.

Historic West Side church damaged in storm

12:14 p.m. CST, February 4, 2011

"One of the casualties of the Blizzard of '11 is an historic West Side church, where two Gothic-style towers came down, sending stone, bricks and parts of the truss roof of the church into the sanctuary.

"Rev. George W. Daniels, senior pastor of First Baptist Congregational Church, 1613 W. Washington Blvd., said damage appeared extensive.

"Part of the towers' facade on the southeast side of the church toppled sometime overnight Tuesday in high winds and lightning, he said. The stones, weighing between 50 and 2,000 pounds, caused two holes 10 to 15 feet wide. Some landed on the balcony and some in front of the church's main entrance."

Chicago Police Ups Alts, Cuts Equity, Bonds

-- Carl Winfield

The $3.2 billion Chicago Policemen’s Annuity and Benefit Fund approved a new strategic asset allocation that will bump its alternatives target to 23% from 2.5% of the total portfolio, increase its private capital allocation to 14% from 11.3%, pump its 2.5% allocation to tactical and alpha strategies up to 19% from 2.5% and fund a 4% allocation to real assets. The fund slashed its equity allocation to 41% from 61.5% and trimmed fixed income and cash to 22% from 24.6% to finance the moves. CIO Sam Kunz said manager searches will remain on hold. He declined to comment on whether equity and fixed income managers would be terminated.

The new allocation comes on the heels of a study conducted by the fund’s consultant, Cambridge, Mass.-based NEPC (MML Daily, 7/26). The move will better diversify the portfolio and reduce volatility, Kunz added.

The fund is slated to review its equity and tactical and alpha strategies at a future meeting, Kunz said. The board will turn its attention to its fixed income and private capital portfolios in the second half of the year.

NYC Police Funding Back To Pre-Crisis Levels
-Kevin Dugan

The New York City Police Pension Fund (NYCPPF) has returned to pre-crisis levels of funding with $23.1 billion in assets as of Dec. 31. That’s up from $19.8 billion on June 30. The gains were largely driven by a nearly 23% return on equities, to which NYCPPF has committed $16.3 billion. Another strong performer was the fund’s $238 million convertible bonds portfolio, which brought home a 15.3% return. A fund administrator said that January and February so far have also been positive for the fund’s assets, but did not elaborate.

One subject that no one has approached is the role that those enormous dividers in the midle of L.S.D. played. They pinned the cars in with no chance of diverting N/B traffic onto S/B lanes. In the event of a major catastrophy the ability to expedite the outbound flow of traffic is essential. One nondrivable fender bender brings everything to a screetching halt. The option of using S/B lanes is key. This is scary stuff when we can't handle a semi bad snow storm or even school dismissals and claim we're ready for a major terrorist attack. While the city has been buried in the snow. We also need to mention the great job the officers involved in the shooting did in 020. Little has been said about it. Even the media briefly mentioned the incident and I guess it is because it was a good shooting. The are things that need to be mentioned. We noticed that the A/3 detectives were hassling the poor PO that shot the offender so much and we kept looking for the FOP. Questioning him as if he was a criminal. E.T. did a lot for the officer and thank God. We also noticed that all the upper command didn't stand by the officer especially it was dully noted that his female commander left the officer that shot all alone in the other side of the room, been hassled by A/3 Detectives and didn't show any support. Also, I don't know how no one of the upper command didn't right away make sure that the officer had his three days guaranteed or time off at least to collect after such a traumatic incident. Some othe the upper command were heard saying "the 3 days are not a guarantee." Our heads kept shaking in the disappointment of the poor support, no representation for our fellow brothers in blue and just brought morale down. The ones around the incident kept looking for the FOP to come to represent the officer and we grew desperate since we didn't see the FOP respond as fast all the upper command to start shaking the officers involved. This is very dangerous leaving the officers alone after critical incidents. The offender had a lot more support then our officers. It was a good shoot, guy coming at officers with a knife and they had to defend themselves but a little support for our fellow brothers involved in the incident would of gone a long way. This goes back to our poor leadership, they haven't really done the job to began to understand how to give support during a critical incident. The upper command were so far away from the officer that we felt they had disowned the officer from the job already. I think someone in the upper command should been more helpful when A/3 detectives were hassling the poor officers after the incident. It was like A/3 Detectives were trying to bright indictment to the officers on the spot from their behavior. The FOP should of been there and making sure the officers were not hassled and given some time to collect their thoughts after a traumatic incident.

In the mid-70's there was a hiring freeze and when Judge Prentiss Marshall finally let the city hire and promote there was a lot of pressure to hire Hispanics and women. So the height requirement was dropped and replaced with height proportioned to weight.

Believe me there were a lot of smaller cops and fire fighters hired back that would make Tom B. look tall.

Rahms new ad beats up on public employees

Translation: City government (Aldermen) thinks it is an employment agency.

Rahm: It is delivering a service to the residents and the taxpayers of the city.

Translation: City government (Aldermen) thinks it is not about delivering a service to the residents and the taxpayers of the city.

Rahm: I want that mindset to be different.

Translation: City governments’(Aldermen) mindset is wrong.

Rahm: We’re going to deliver a service to the taxpayers.

Translation: Taxpayers are not receiving city services.

Rahm: We’re going to get them the best price for what they pay for, whether that’s protecting a street, cleaning a street, or plowing a street.

Translation: Taxpayers are being ripped-off by the Police Department the Fire Department and the Department of Streets and Sanitation. They are overcompensated.

Rahm: That means making sure everybody that works for the city government knows that they’re actually a public servant representing and helping the people that pay them.

Translation: Public employees do not believe they are accountable to taxpayers and do not do their jobs.

The City's website no longer gives you the tracking number. It

How come the crystal ball unit and Jody couldn't figure this one out? I'm betting their spots were cleaned to the pavement.

SCC you gotta check your department email!!! The city sent out an email asking for volunteers to shovel snow. They are looking for you to go to soldiers field and then be bussed to shovel out bus stops and sidewalks. And they will let you park there for FREE. Wow I wonder who thought this up!!!

Aldercreature's Twitter Accounts.

Which Aldercreatures are using social media (i.e. Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, etc) the best to communicate with the taxpayers?

We know they all have web pages. However I don't think that the web pages alone allow for real time interaction and/or provide a public venue for discourse.

Out of the 50 wards I was only able to find 9 aldercreatures with Twitter accounts as follows:

Ward 1 Alderman Joe Moreno
http://twitter.com/alderman_Moreno

Ward 2 Alderman Fioretti
http://twitter.com/fiorettichicago

Ward 6 Freddrenna Lyle
http://twitter.com/fmlyle

Ward 12 George Cardenas
http://twitter.com/ald12

Ward 20 Willie B. Cochran
http://twitter.com/ALDERMANWBC

Ward 27 Walter Burnett J
http://twitter.com/AldermanBurnett

Ward 33 Richard Mell
http://twitter.com/33rdWardALERT

Ward 44 Thomas M. Tunney
http://twitter.com/AldTomTunney

Ward 49 Alderman Joe Moore
http://twitter.com/joemoore49

Does anyone know of others?

I also wonder who is using them only as a campaign toll and once elected they will be abandoned?

"Time to get this right
since I work for S&S (29years) we have never plowed an Alley there are 2 reason for this
1) cant freaking fit a plow down an alley with all the carts
2) pushing snow up against your garage door is a bad idea that will cost you another garage
door a fence hell even fito might take a hit."
2/04/2011 11:43:00 AM

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Well, those of us on my block must have been spoiled for the past 20 years. My street and alley has ALWAYS been plowed and salted!

Perhaps it was because I had a neighbor or a relative of a neighbor that lived on the block or the next block - I don't know.
But, for the twenty years I have lived here, it has been plowed and salted!!!!!
So, shame on me for expecting that either the STREET or the alley would be have been taken care of.

I just never expected that Zalewski would blow the entire ward off during an election year!!!

Start packing up your office Mike.

Yes Garfield ridge residents your streets were cleaned well before the clearing side. The alderman lives on your side of town, and he has to be able to get to all his watering holes on archer. And yes all the neighbors did get together to clean the streets but theres only so much we can do. Why do we all pay the same taxes, but dont get the same service. Comes down to who you know. Our alderman is a piece of shit. Call his office to get some service and listen to the bullshit stories you will hear. Its time for him to be gone, we need some new blood in this end of town. We need a alderman who will actually acknowledge the city(23rd ward) doesnt end at archer and 55th. Hopefully when he is gone he can take that red light camera he had installed with him,and the kick backs stop.

2/04/2011 07:41:00 PM

MmmHmmm. Your 1% pay raise vs. the 67% increase in income tax. I hope with the 66%, he is truly able to save the pensions.

And for all those of you talking about the property tax bills, the first bill is an ESTIMATE only. It used to be 50% of last year's total bill, but they raised it to 55%, so what you are seeing now is more than 1/2 of last years bill.
Until you get the second half, you have no idea what happened with your taxes.

But...

The idea that an Alderman gets out and talks to someone who actually does the work, not a "Ward Superintendent" is not a bad thing.

Climb on board, feel the grinding of the gears, the hassle of moving that monster, taste the diesel fumes, hear the squawking radio and get an idea of what an ass busting job that is something they all should do.

Like an Alderman really seeing what we on the street, not the offices do, may make them less likely to cut our benefits.

There were no lockers for the new guys so in uniform I had to get to work on the bus or whatever.

I got a ride from a state snow plow truck; that was a big hit when I arrived. Those guys earn their money.

I also got a ride from bakery truck, brought in some samples which the desk appreciated.

An interesting ride was from the Horse Identifier from Maywood Park. He showed me his photo books and we talked about lip tattoos what sets one horse apart from another and the potential race fixing involved.

I got a ride from a city garbage truck and I think I did catch the Central Avenue bus at least once.

Alderman Jackson IS about to loose her seat. Not to anyone named Beavers but to newcomer Greg Mitchell. He wants to do the job, not wear the tiara. Sandi and Jesse Jackson were filmed at the SuperBowl; she shot off a note to the rabid press, waited for the camera crew, looked cute bouncing in a rig and then flew out of this craphole like the privileged celebrity she is.
No one will say it but everyone knows it.
Jesse won't get voted out of office because his ridiculousness is not as over the top as his wife's. But I'd rather be her and loose an election than be him and go to prison.
