Running to Remember

  • As his knees buckled with five miles to go in the half-marathon, Chicago police Detective Greg Jacobson focused on the five colleagues he had recently lost in the line of duty.

Mile 9 was for Sgt. Alan Haymaker, mile 10 for Officer Thomas Wortham IV, mile 11 for Officer Thor Soderberg, mile 12 for Officer Michael Bailey and the last one for Officer Michael Flisk, Jacobson said, his voice breaking with emotion.

"Whenever you're in trouble, you always count on another officer coming to your help," he said. "At mile 8 1/2, I was in a little bit of trouble so I called on these guys to get me through it — and they did."

All of the events this year, St. Jude, The Run to Remember, Police Memorial Week here and in Washington, the motorcycle runs, all of them are going to be tinged with memories of a very painful year just past.

Jake, when you've had it and the thought about giving up crossed your mind, that gentle hug that assisted you through was in fact,Haymaker, Wortham, Soderberg, Bailey and Flisk.
In true Chicago tradition, when you called for an assist, they had your back.

This May in Washington D.C., I'll join our ranks to make sure that each of 'their' families likewise know that we will never let them walk alone.

A brother

(Thanks SCC)

I entered the police academy back in the late 70's. I remember how everyone came in with their own set of life experiences and prejudices and how we eventually all learned to trust each other, and how, when we finally were ready to hit the mean streets of Chicago, we weren't as much White, Black or Hispanic or Male/Female as we were all Blue. We were truly brothers and sisters in arms, at least right out of the academy.

I had a beautiful Black woman in my home room, light skinned with freckles on her rosy cheeks, and who's smile would light up the room. A lecherous old Jewish Traffic Instructor used to just leer at her backside as he called her "Apple Cheeks" and then would say "What?" as he would claim he was talking about her face. We all knew better, and truth be told, we all agreed with him! She married another guy in our home room and I went to their wedding.

Usually, as academy classes are scattered throughout the City, we all kind of lose touch with each other as we meet and work with a whole new set of officers in the districts, but we never seem to lose the bonds we have with our home room class. So, one night as I arrived at work, I noticed a lot of coppers around the desk and it was VERY quiet and the mood was somber. I said "Whats up?" and I was told a copper was shot and killed on the South Side. My gut immediately knotted up, as always, when we hear those words. I thought, far South Side... hmmm probably not someone I know. "Who?". A female copper, I was told, named Dorelle Brandon...

Oh my God... Apple Cheeks. I was stunned... tears welled up in my eyes right there at the desk, as they are right now as I revisit these memories. This was the first officer I actually knew who was killed. Nothing effects you more than when it's personal. They're ALL personal but I mean when its a friend. My life would never be the same.

http://www.odmp.org/officer/2180-police-officer-dorelle-c.-brandon

Others that I knew and worked with would follow. Sgt. Alane Stoffregen from our Academy class died in a training accident while Scuba diving. Daniel Doffyn, Dell Fountain, and Greg Young from 015 were all shot and killed. From 010, Benny Perez was hit by a train and Bobby Soto was shot and killed off-duty in his car. Rick Francis was disarmed and murdered by a psycho on a CTA bus in 019, and Sgt. Al Haymaker died in 023 in a car accident while responding to a felony call. I knew Al from 015, from years before.

Sorry to get all sappy here, SCC, but remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice is necessary to keep us grounded. Thanks for the opportunity, and bless ALL of our protectors in society for all of your sacrifices.

Off Topic but very important: Lisa Madigan filed a lawsuit today to take away Jon Burge's pension. Isn't that something?? You get convicted of a "crime" looooong after you retire and the democrats want to take away the pension that you earned. They want to take away food from your children and grandchildren. What a disgusting town we live in. I wish I left this place long ago.

Brother, you did a great job of putting it into words.
Sorry for those bad memories but we all live, one way or another, with similar experiences.
That's why they refer to it as the Thin Blue Line, I guess.
I'm glad to have had the privilege of having served with you along with those you mentioned... Chicago's Finest.

You know, I'm honestly sorry you were screwed over by the behavioral system, but you need to find a way to keep it from coloring EVERY single thing in your life.

If you can't get past it, get some counseling.

Thank you for honoring the memory of Dorelle Brandon. Dorelle was the real deal and I will always remember her. BTW that lecherous instructor ended up going to prison for taking bribes on LSD while working as a traffic cop and heading up a group of thieves who were stealing jewels from shipments into and out of O'Hare. Never what happened to him after that.

You're entitled to your opinions on "The Chicago Code" on FOX TV. I really enjoyed it. I'd recommend it as Chicago's version of "The Wire".

Sure looks like Alderman Ike Caruthers lost a lot of weight...or was that William "Big Hawg Balls" Beavers?

I'd take a dozen Jennifer Beals ("CPD Supt. Teresa Colvin") over the real life cowardly, alien piece of shit that Daley shoved down our throats. And da Mare will never admit to making a mistake. The 47 year-old Ms. Beals looks just as attractive as when she starred in "Flashdance" in the early '80's.

Since it's Hollywood, you must expect some "political correctness" and a bit of the absurd.

In the opening car chase scene, there's no way that the perp pointing the pistol at the homicide dick protagonist would survive to kiss the belly of his unborn baby's mama. Light him up 'til he jingles to the morgue.

Two thumbs up. I'm a fan of "The Chicago Code". It's art imitating life in the most politically corrupt major city in the nation. Millions of national viewers will vividly realize that Chicago is rightfully the laughing stock of evil urban politics.

The only problem is that the most powerful Chicago pols are shamelessly corrupt and are seemingly immune to federal prosecution and media scrutiny.

Everything is rigged in this town. It's the Chicago Way.
