Ok, this looks good. We got a new young face as president with energy and experience with the pension and some old blood with experience with the FOP system. Bella is a good guy, but he can thank Marky Mark for his loss. We never heard from Mark D. when the chips were down and left us feeling alone often. I didn't vote for Shields. Personally I didn't feel he'd be up to the huge task ahead: the attack of the Rahmfather.
I still feel that way. Unfortunately it sounds as if he's all we got at this point. Hopefully there's enough leadership around him to "guide" him.

Very knowledgeable guy. Knows police policies and knows the contract. He'll spot Rahm's manipulations very early in the game. A great asset to the FOP.
Bella is a great guy and was the only person at the FOP who would give it to the POs straight. He knows the issues and he knows how this city screws officers.
His only drawback is that he represents and older and certainly tougher policeman that this stupid fucking city has grown to distrust and hate. Going forward with these pension issues we are going to need someone the people in this city will listen to instead of immediately dismissing. Hopefully Mike is the guy to put a face to our pension concerns in the upcoming debate. The FOP is going to be neck deep in pension issues for the next four years and we are going to have to draw as much public support as we can.

Thanks to the 2,953 who voted for me for trustee. Not quite enough but I appreciate the votes. I am encouraged that over 10,500 of you voted. That was a much better turnout than last time.
A few turned in unintelligible ballots, one was marked "deceased" and one guy wrote in Gery Chico. Some showed signs of being in a cargo pants pocket for days and some were shoved under the door of FOP Hall Friday morning. Post Office delivered only were accepted or vote in person which almost 100 did.
Support these people you elected, we will all need them to fight for us in the next three years.

This "club" never had the interests of the individual officer as it's mission. Any time you called down there, they tried to talk you out of filing a greivence. It was like they didn't want to spend our dues on legal fees and if you ever got into trouble, they made you feel like you were on your own, which you were. I hope the incoming board realizes that each incident they get into with the department is the most important thing going on in their career. Not a every couple of year contract that always goes to arbitration anyway. The old FOP never realized this. Look I am not a cop but if I can I would like to chime in here. I have been coming on this site for a couple of years now and have seen how much people come on here and whine about your Ex Board that does nothing for you guys. Mike may be young and some may think he is inexperience but he is a change. There are a enough guys on the board that do know how to conduct business and you all need to demand that they help him as much as he needs it. If they don't, then you guys will be screwed big time. I have seen what happens when the Ex. Board doesn't get behind the leader and help acheive the goals set out for. I am a member of the CFD and have seen our union go a whole term cutting each others throats every chance they get.
Guy this is NOT the time to have different agendas. There is a new mayor and things are going to get tough. EVERYBODY needs to be on the same page. It will make you are stronger union being 1 big voice. Get behind the board that has won and support them as best as possible until the next election. If they don't do the job, then vote them out. But for now they are the group that will be working for you. So the least you can do is have their back.
And if the outgoing guys had any class and really cared about the union as a whole, they would help the oncoming guys every way they could.

I seen Bella on Chicago Tonight. He didn't seem to have all his facts straight and came off like the typical dem der and dough copper. We need fresh blood and I'm happy some of the older guys r still in.

I seen Nolan the other day with a county badge on. That leaves a lot of questions. Hopefully Shields integerity is beyond approach.

We now have a fresh new face to define and lead our union, a union which consists of, for the most part, honest, hard-working, (ironically & hopefully non-combatively) congenial men (and woman) who are required by their job description to have not only two ink pens, but a firearm and sufficient reserve ammunition. This being said, is there anyone out there who honestly thinks that things CAN/WILL change as long as the "dolts" we all have interspersed in our neighborhoods continue to vote as they have in OUR city? Pretty f'n embarrassing if you ask me. Hope everything works out with the FOP newly-elected, BUT - there are bigger issues here, and all of us know that! - Until we are able to eliminate 'politics as usual' here, we are doomed to be at its mercy, no matter who...don't kid yourselves and think otherwise, this FOP election may have been a step in the right direction, but it was a baby-step...

No, it is 11 out of 17, and 9 out of those 17 (52.9%) are retired guys.
That means there are very likely around 5,000 unopened ballots sitting in active police officer's trash cans, never filled out and mailed in.
You PO's who never bothered to vote, I hope you like it that near 53% of your board of directors are retired police.
That is enough to sway EVERY vote of the board. Retired police now control the FOP Board of Directors.

Well, your inaction will cost all of us now.
Retirees make up around 35% of the voting block among FOP membership but now control 53% of the Board of Directors.
I guess it is better that way since retired PO's know how valuable our hard fought contract rights really are. The younger PO's have absolutely no sense of knowledge of history of the abuses we took before we got much of the protection now in our contract.
Better to let those with knowledge and intelligence decide for you on all the important issues.

I didn't vote for Shields but I will support him. I voted for Bella because I have had the pleasure of knowing him for my 17 years on the job. Bella is a very stand up Police Detective and really cared about us.
That being said Shields faces very challenging times. The wave of beating down Union Employees is just starting in our country and really wont come to a head hear in Chicago until Emanul gets in. Union Busting is the political and public "Phrase that Pays" for now. We need to stand together and hope for the best with this new administration, both Mayor and FOP President. Change is in the air and don't blame Shields when it comes, it will be out of his control.

I have been coming on this site for a couple of years now and have seen how much people come on here and whine about your Ex Board that does nothing for you guys. Mike may be young and some may think he is inexperience but he is a change. Let me guess. Never been to a meeting before. You probably get your information from other guys in roll call that don't go to meetings. Under Daley no union had a timely contract. You didn't lose your 30 year step raise. We now get it 5 years sooner.We did not lend the city any of our pension money. That money was from another city pension fund, not ours. We all now get to leave 5 years sooner at 75% with both benefits. These benefits together were huge for all of us. Shields is young the trustees have 9, yes nine retirees not young. There is one piece of information that you got right. New election and it is time to move on. We will see how he does. Only time will tell. If people really want change why do we keep voting in people like Harold Brown, Ron Shoegren, Pat Duckhorn. These guys have got to go if you want change.

I hope Mike will do a good job. The majority of coppers voted for him so he is what we have. I will say this for him, he at least looked at our pension and alerted us to what was going on. Can someone name any other person at FOP that did that?

Yes I do. I didn't run out and buy a big flashy car or build a giant home I can't afford. I have a nice car, 2 flat and live within what the department pays me. I save for what I want, have 1 credit card with a zero balance and don't work any part time jobs. I guess it has to do with how I was raised. I wasn't given everything I wanted only what I needed. Sent out to work for myself at 16 so I could learn a work ethic. I'm doing okay.

Very silly post. Mike needs training for six months or so. It is too important to change everyone at once. Time to shake hands and stop the bullshit. To all of Mikes supporters here give the kid some slack. By promising the sky you doom him to unrealistic goals and failure. The only thing that is good for Mike right now is a new mayor and the Wisconsin protest have to giving the jags in Springfield some pause.
