Busybodies

  • The Illinois House today passed a ban on the use of artery-clogging trans fats in food served in restaurants and in school vending machines that would start in 2013.

Although many cities and counties have passed bans, if the bill passes the state Senate and Gov. Pat Quinn signs it, Illinois would be only the second state in the nation to pass such a measure. The first was California.

If it becomes law, restaurants would not be able to serve food with trans fats starting Jan. 1, 2013. The ban also would apply to vending machines in public and private schools.

How much was that tax hike? How large was that deficit? When are all the pensions scheduled to go belly-up? And these idiots are banning trans fats?

American homeless go without eating. American elderly go without needed medicines. American troops go without needed equipment. American mentally ill go without treatment. American veterans go without benefits they were promised. Yet our government spews out billions to other countries before helping our own. Unfuckingbelievable!

GOVERNMENT, get out of my personal business.

If I want to eat junk food, it is MY choice, not yours.

Next, it'll be food gestapo entering your house without a warrant to determine if you have the forbidden sour cream, or the forbidden high butterfat ice cream.

As a citizen of this country, I have a right to bear arms. I also have a right to eat the foods I CHOOSE to eat. WTF.

The only transfat that should be banned around here is Quinn in a dress.

SCC, this city is so corrupt I think it's beyond repair.

We have schools already dictating what the kids will eat at school banned from bringing their own lunches and forced to pay for and eat whatever the school cafe dishes out. Either that or go hungry.

School administration like little tribal community leader-dictators. It's way outta hand.

in 10 years some will realize the replacement chemicals are way worse than trans fat.

I understand there are bigger issues, but seriously, trans fats and high-fructose corn syrup, as well as the chemicals in packaging are killing us. Just like the PBA's in plastic bottles was banned, I think these things should be out of the food chain! I would support a nationwide ban myself.

Boston MA has banned regular (Non Diet) pop and regular Gatorade/PowerAde from being sold in City buildings, schools, parks, etc.

They call it "Mandated Options"

Don't ban it, tax it if it is bad for you. Then it will be YOUR CHOICE if you choose to buy it.

I hate do-gooders, especially self righteous do-gooders.

I once read that many years ago a method Chicago Aldermen used to get the money they needed from the business community that was not voulentarily offered was to put they call out they needed donations and if they didn't get there beaks wet, they got innovative.

One of the innovations was to write a new ordinance that railroad spikes in the Ward had to be a certian distance apart, thus requiring the R.R. to spend huge amounts of money to redo the tracks.

I think that's what's going on with these goofy bans is It's not about the kids or public health, it's about some segment of the food or beverage industry that's not caughing up it's "donation" to Burke or some other suckhole.

Another instance of our dedicated legislators doing what feels good in order to avoid having to make tough choices about the future of our state gov't.

This stuff feels good. Of course they want to do this instead of messing with the problems. If they were employees, they'd be fired for not doing their jobs.

Yeah, good point, but none of the welfare kids in CPS pay for the shit to begin with, so how does taxing it accomplish anything?

I like how insanely backwards this is. A few kids get fat because their parents are too busy using their LINK and not doing their job as a parent, so of course, the Gov assumes the responsibility. The heart-stopping issue for these people is trans-fat foods for some inner city school kids who will go home to a (single legal guardian) slum, surrounded by gangs and drugs. Really!? Thank God, they are banning potato chips in schools, that will solve all these problems, no more black p stones, no more vice lords, no more crack or heroin...because those aren't the real problems...This is not about health, this is about control. Anyone who thinks this is about health had drank the kool-aid. The Gov is a master of corroding our freedoms and rights as Americans under the guise of health, the children, the future and the environment. All the things to scare and guilt us to dig deeper in to our pockets during a bad economy and sky rocketing gas prices. Wake up.

It would seem to me that California would be the LAST state to pattern yourselves after in terms of passing similar laws.

Theres a reason why they are known as the 'land of fruits and nuts'.

On a side note, the 9th Federal Circuit (West coast) has more cases and laws overturned on appeal, than ALL of the other Federal Circuit Courts combined!

Go figure...

This is on par with the city ordinance passed a few years ago by the Chicago city Counsel making Chicago a " Nuclear free zone". Yes, listen up Ruskies, while we steal millions with contracts, patronage and the hired truck scandals, we forbid you from dropping a nuke on this mighty world class city? It seems these asshats who are are elected political class skim over the real issues and pass bullshit laws that are meaningless.

The point is, what I CHOOSE to eat, is not YOUR business.

Drink your soy milk, but why should I have to? Eat your tofu, but I would like my OWN choice for lunch to be on MY plate.

How about I won't interfere with your food choices and you don't interfere with mine?
