Marine Officers Save Two
Two Chicago Police Marine Unit officers had just finished a drill on treating near-drowning victims when they were summoned to a downtown harbor to save the life of a woman who had stopped breathing after falling into the water.
The woman, 60, fell in the water about 9:40 p.m. Friday after a man, 59, who had been pushing her in a wheelchair on a ramp apparently stumbled and fell in himself. The two were leaving an event at the nearby Columbia Yacht Club, when they fell into the harbor at 111 N. Lake Shore Drive, according to police. They were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment and were expected to recover, officials said today.
Officers Kevin Hitney, who works the overnight shift, and Kurt Kaner, who works the evening shift, had just participated in the drill at Marine Unit Headquarters, a quarter-mile north of the Yacht Club, when a call came in saying two people had fallen in the water.
A fortunate set of occurrences that they were nearby and had just finished a training exercise with the very equipment they ended up using to rescue and resuscitate the victims. A very good job all around.

Cool.
Reminds me of the Summer Mobile officers that pulled out Mariam Pare in 1998.
Pare was in a motorized wheelchair, as a quadriplegic, and lost control- falling into the lake while strapped in.
She had an off-duty lifeguard and a summer mobile squad car only yards behind her. Several passers-by helped out.
R.I.P. to one of those rescuers who died in a tragic accident that same summer

And they want to get rid of this unit. Just think of what might, no would have happened if the Marine Unit was no more!
Great Job, office!
Good job, Team!
Nice Job Guys!! Way to go!!
His father was the police and paid the ultimate price.
Kudos to the Marine Unit and the Marine unit officers who did a fantastic job on saving the man and woman who fell into the harbor. Without your rapid intervention a beautiful individual would have been lost. Thank you with all of my heart. A big thank you to the Chicago Fire Dept as well...
Bravo!

One of the Marine Unit boats is named after his dad.
Good job guys. Once again CPD officers have out done themselves.
Who's running the marine unit now?
Didin't LT piazza(sp?) retire?
Yeah Kurt! Good job dude!
Nice Job Guys!
This was like the opposite of murphy's law. Officers very close by, had the right equipment on hand, had just trained on using it. Perfect situation, perfect timing.
Great job officers.
Jason Lundelius was the only son of an older couple, his dad was a 40 year CPD officer who was the Broadway foot man for years in 020.
Jim was so proud of what Jason did that day, he carried around the newspaper clippings and showed them to anybody and everybody.
Jason was a great kid, all of us in 020 at the time knew he was special. Jason lit up a room whenever he came in.
Jim died emotionally when his son did, the smile disappeared and so did the spring in his step.
Rahm would probably want to dump the unit anyways, he wants to make it look like he is effective when he makes his Presidential run in '16.
We are in for a rough time with the Tiny Dancer.
Remember the old adages, "the devil you know......." or "be careful what you wish for, you just may get it"
Good Job!!!
Kurt, HERO's run in the family!
Great job Kevin and partner, another reason RAHM KEEP THE MARINE UNIT!!
Way to go Kevin! You made the rest of 92-1E proud.
You guys are awesome! Congrats on a job well done! I'm proud of you both.
And they want to get rid of this unit. Just think of what might, no would have happened if the Marine Unit was no more!

They did good, but it was just random chance they had the opportunity. If it had happened ten minutes earlier or later they might well have not been in a position to do anything other than haul in a dead body.
Great Job CPD!
Ken kaner, 007, son? Yes, If so, I remember the father very well. A really good guy. Tragic, but it moved the Police Wives club to demonstrate for 2 man cars which probably saved a lot of lives back then.
Great Job.
We can use some publicity that puts us in a good light right about now.
We all stand a little taller & walk with a bit of swagger today, proud of these fine Officers and C.P.D.
STILL the real po-leece.
Good Job Kev!!!!
After many, many years listening to City-Wide, I can tell you no other unit can document more lives saved than the Marine Unit. What they do on a daily basis is not a matter of "random chance." It's a matter of equipment, training and a 24/7 presence during the summer months. I hear the thunder rolling outside as I type this and a Tornado Watch just popped up on the TV screen. They'll be out there... stay safe out there guys and gals. ALL of you, marine units and landlubbers alike.
And they want to get rid of this unit. Just think of what might, no would have happened if the Marine Unit was no more!

Much of life IS random chance. Lucky for those people these guys happened to have taken a police exam, got assigned to the Marine Unit, had a training session in exactly the needed equipment and response and didn't take time due yesterday. All random. Or, maybe, karma.
Lighten up; you sound petty and jealous.
Jim Lundelius:
If you are still around and read this blog, I would just like to say hello. I was in the same recruit class with you when we came on the job. You may not remember me, but I used to sit on your right and we had a good time while in the police academy laughing and joking. After graduation we never saw each other again, like so many of the other guys that were in our class.
I retired in 1998 and I remember hearing or reading about your son. I know that it has been a while, but I would like you to know that I am sorry for your troubles.
10.56am You, sir, are an asshole....you must be a real peach to have around at the holidays.
Did you see the Marine Unit on the news, Kurt and the boys talking about the rescue? I see a "Men of the Marine Unit" calendar in the future.
"Rahm would probably want to dump the unit anyways..."
That's already been tried, but bigger phone calls than the mayor himself were made and fortunately, the Marine Unit is back!
Hopefully they won't try this stunt again.
Too bad this won't stay in the headlines for days and days like the negative stories do.
God bless CPD.

The Nearest Coast Guard Stations are in Calumet Harbor & Wilmette. The FEDS put the kabosh on it, nothing sinister. Just Local Pols showing their ass, as usual
They should have that marine unit patrolling the rivers in the city. The north branch goes up into 016, 017, and various other sections.

You can really say that about anything at all.
One thing is for sure; if the police had not been there, these two people may very well have died.
This is a great big city on a lake, with bridges, beaches, boating, and rivers running through the joint. We MUST HAVE marine capability for both police and fire. That's it.
Need money for this? Cut waste. Stop buying hundreds of miles of useless steel fences and phony "cast-iron antique" light poles and stupid banners to hang from them and dangerous speed bumps and deep grooves in alleys.
"Facade rebate program." If store owners and real estate speculators want new windows and doors on their property, let them f__ing pay for them. Same thing with "historic bungalow subsidies" and other giveaways for the well-off, let alone "Sanctuary City" encouragement to the whole world.
I see new sidewalks and elaborate cast-iron grilles and new trees growing on block after block of empty stores. When did the city get into the business of Potemkin Village, play-pretend-dollhouse?
I went by another block of unsold condominium townhomes last night; sitting there dark and empty for years now. Place changed hands again, and there's a bright new banner across the front. "NOW LEASING!" You gotta be kidding.
You can't make this disaster up on the backs of the taxpayers -- even Daley was saying that today, now that he doesn't have any more campaign promises to make -- saying that new construction in (and by) the city was going to really slow down.
No, I am not in the Marine Unit. I just have the funny idea that lives should come before decorations and unnecessary make-work projects floated on crooked kickback financing and no-bid buddy-buddy favoritism.
Hey, Patrick. Hey, R.J. Didja clean any sewers today? Ha.
I suppose we can count ourselves lucky that they didn't kill anyone.

Yes, that will ensure a very timely response when people nearly drown at the lakefront.

I suppose we can count ourselves lucky that [Daley and Vanecko] didn't kill or beat or maim anyone TODAY, to the best of my knowledge.
(sigh)
About 1994 Daley did dump us (I'm retired).Within a week or so the fire helo went down while responding to a job we would have taken. The firemen not injured seriously. We were back in service the next day.
