Dispatcher Killed Headed Home

  • On any given shift, police dispatcher Marciea Adkins could have monitored a police pursuit, her voice providing a key link between the officers in the chase and other units on the street.

Adkins died early Sunday driving home from her overnight shift after her car was struck by a teenager fleeing from police in stolen SUV, police said. The 16-year-old had touched off a nearly 2-mile pursuit after he backed into a police vehicle during a traffic stop for failing to stop at a red light, police said.

Adkins, 42, was married to a dispatcher for the Chicago Fire Department, and the couple had a young daughter.

The city flag at Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications was lowered to half-staff on Sunday, and Adkins’ body was escorted by police and fire vehicles from Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
From everything we've heard from friends at work, Adkins was highly thought of and a good, capable dispatcher - something very valuable nowadays in these uncertain times. The radio is our lifeline and the person on the other end is often the angel looking over our shoulders.

Sun Times coverage here.

Thoughts and prayers for the Dispatcher and her family only here.

Thanks SCC.

Marciea was the most positive, always happy, person I've ever known. She worked midnights, Zone 1 and even if she was tired coming on shift she'd always crack a smile and a joke. She never had a negative word to say about anything or anyone. Her smile was always genuine. She was a good friend to all, a good wife, great mother, and co-worker.

If she saw all the heartbreak and tears we shed for her, she'd laugh and say 'ok now, knock it off'. Marciea will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

My Deepest Condolences to Bill Adkins (CFD Dispatch) and their sweet young daughter Jillian. My heart breaks for your loss.

RIP MARCIEA ADKINS

Sharon Wright of channel five news was blaming the conduct of the police in chasing the pos offender as the cause of her death. Let's place the blame in the right place and that is with the offender. He should be charged with murder when Anita gets back from Hawaii.

I was talking to her brother Mark just last week, reminiscing the old days where we all grew up.
If you grew up in South Deering, it wasn't the same place it is today. It was a tough, blue collar neighborhood that had it's share of problems like any other. The challenges were many but so were the opportunities if you had spirit. The steel mills were in full swing and there were many good families that struggled to make a better life for themselves.
The same could be said for growing up in the Trumbull Park Homes. Marci came from there and was always good natured, good humored and always quick with her wit and her lovely smile. She was a scrappy young lady that grew into a beautiful woman in so many ways. Marci's spirit embodied the goodness that overcomes adversity and allows the human spirit to float like the wind and brush the cheek of many as it blows ever so gently past.
I remember her spirit when she worked at Service Merchandise in the East Side Plaza. I knew that once you spoke to Marci, no matter how bad a day you could be having, Marci's twinkle in her eye and demeanor would snap you out of it.
The world will be a little duller and a not as bright a place without her in it. My condolences to her husband and the entire Tighe and Adkins family.
In my mind's eye, her Irish eyes will always be smiling.

From Chicago Breaking News:

A 16-year-old boy was charged this morning in connection with a fatal traffic crash that left a police dispatcher dead over the weekend.

Marquis Harrison, of the 200 block of South Lotus Avenue, was charged as an adult with one count of first-degree murder and felony burglary, according to the Cook County state's attorney's office. He was also charged with misdemeanor DUI and received two citations.

It's been several years since I worked on Zone 1, but I remember how good the dispatchers were. A while ago I was talking to a friend of mine who was a dispatcher and we got to talking about the relationship between the police and dispatchers. My friend explained that they could do an outstanding job for 19 years, never missing a call or dispatch, never loosing track of who was where and what they were doing. Then you have a bad day and miss a call or drop the ball on something and your suddenly a dog who can't be trusted to take care of the coppers. Since that conversation, I end every shift by thanking my dispatchers and wishing them a good day. It's not much, but I wait in the car everyday for their response. Marciea was appreciated by us a long time and I'm sorry I didn't let her know. RIP

I knew Marcia when I worked in 004. There wasn't a malicious bone in her body. Rest peacefully my sister...I know you are with Jesus. Why this happened, only He knows, but there HAS to be a reason for her husband and her beautiful daughter, in God's eyes, to have to endure this. I won't even pretend to know why. Regarding the "honor student", I can't believe I'M even saying this, but even HE needs Jesus. That being said, and JUST LIKE the thief on the cross, I hope he asks God to forgive him, becaause HE will. Then, JUST LIKE THE THIEF ON THE CROSS, I hope he pays for this abomination of a crime here on earth with his life. Forgiveness from God is guaranteed...paying for the consequences of your actions here on Earth is another story. ANY death you can conjure up couldn't possibly pay for what he did, but he should still have to pay here.

RIP police dispatcher Marciea Adkins.

Had the family of this "Honors" student in crime, parented their child, police dispatcher Marciea Adkins would be alive today, IL would have retained one more taxpayer, something in IL is in dire need of and this this so called academic "Honors" student might have a life a head of him instead of living out his life as a risk and burden to productive taxpaying IL citizens.

Now he' represents an even bigger mushroom cloud of wasted taxpayer money.

And, what sort of idiot -- moron -- leaves a car running anywhere, much less in Chicago??
