Hiring Rumor?

Can any verify that the Department is looking at starting 4 classes, 50 per class each month from September onward until the end of the year?

And is Rahm going to count those 200 toward his "1,000" promise even if they don't hit the street until March of next year?

"Since they cancelled some security details and are supposed to save 650k, thats enough for 16 new coppers."
It ain't the money- it is a matter of priorities. We all know the budget is done in July and we had mass retirements in Aug-Sept last year post retro check/contract. If 400 people retired, that's 32 million (assuming average $80,000 salary, a very LOW estimate) in the police budget alone. Recruits are less than $50,000 and the training staff WAS already there & being paid. If one hired the same as retired at our 400 estimate, the city will still have $2 million extra. Plus, we all know people have been retiring for years and the hiring has not matched. Where is all that money???? It was set aside for police in budget, why isn't it used for that? And, why doesn't anyone call out our mayors for that nonsense? 32 million!!! Wasn't that the number reported they were "over" in their budget plans for 2011-2012? Interesting.

On Thursday, they had 85 candidates that never showed up for the power test. Then around 45 failed the simple power test. If they invited 300, that is almost half eliminated in the first round. At hat rate, they will quickly move through the list to find qualified recruits. Hiring 50 a month is great for training but it is not enough to replace vacancies unless they continue to hire every month next year.

A piece of advise from someone who's got one foot out the door...Kid, this job is a good starting point for someone your age, i.e. experience, salary, benefits ect., and if it gets you out of your parents home all the better, but if you have half a brain look elsewhere, otherwise expect the least and you won't be so disappointed with the shenanigans that are part of the culture of this department. That being said I leave you with this, two things rise to the top...cream and scum. Look at our leadership, look at our politicians who pull their strings, the choice is yours, good luck and God bless.

Sincerely, a vet in his third decade.

Actually the department will be spending more because they hired retired officers to replace the security details in some instances.

I am not a police officer, but let me see if I understand this. The budget is for 13500 officers. You are 3-4000 short. In theory that money is sitting there for salaries. There is an added cost with training 3-4000, but if they were to hire 1500-2000 that would be a wash. I know without the figures this is not exact. Is there something I am missing? Other than the city stealing the balance of the money.

This is not unusual.
The Dept. typically loses 90% of the original test takers.
Meaning: Only 10% of the original test takers get hired.
The reasons are many:
Did not actually qualify to take the written exam;
Did not really want the job;
Went to other employment;
Cannot pass the background invest.

I see I struck a nerve with you and I understand you went and got all excited but my statement was"everywhere you can", be it local burbs, down state or across the country. I'm not advocating this city or state but I was saying I don't agree with coppers telling applicants not to take what's still a good job in a poor economy. Not everyone can or wants to lateral to AZ or test in Vegas or NY but you can't limit yourself either by skipping local tests if you really want to land such a competitive position. Some people just need to see for themselves and who has the right to tell them not to try. What's keeping you? Are you vested? out of shape? A fuck up? All of the above? Why don't you go back and police where ever it is you came from if it's so SHITTY here? I'm not claiming it's all legit but I figured that out pretty early on and decided I could make it work for me an my family as I dont have any delusions of being da real police aspiring to exempt positons, I'm just a 7 yr patrolman. Maybe you're just a malcontent who'd be unhappy anywhere, I don't know, I'm not making arrogant assumptions and ridiculous statements like some ghetto shitbag.

But why do that when you can steal it and hand it out to family and friends, right Shortshanks? Now Rahm can continue with the theft instead of doing the right thing because he doesn't want cops to be able to eat when they retire.

A class of 100 Detectives to begin late fall.

7/09/2011 09:01:00 PM

Although very welcome, this addition will hardly make a dent.

I have cases I could make arrests on right now, but there is never any time.

I am constantly behind, and I have nightmares about what I haven't been able to get done.

I am constantly taking files home to read.

Triple that number, and maybe I'll be able to get some sleep.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to join the CPD, especially anyone who reads this blog?

Seriously, go become a finance major. Finance PHd's start at $180K., and there is such a shortage it's unbelievable.

Finance isn't as hard as it seems. You just have to keep up and study.

Me, I'm going for that PHd.

Seriously, could someone in the media please get the numbers?

The city has claimed 13,500 sworn since I came on in the mid-eighties.

Newspeople, get the numbers for every year, deduct the retires, add in the hires.

Should not be that difficult to come up with a real number.

And why the f*ck isn't this public information that's readily avaialable?

I was driving and heard the radio announcer say 13,500 and almost rear-ended someone.

WTF? How many years can the numbers stay the same?

Wish I was 55 and could take advantage of the retirement.

I don't know if it's like this in this city, but it was in Detroit.

My Dad was DFD, retired at the rank of lt. Once you made rank and had a couple of years, you were expected to retire, to make room for another guy to get the rank.

My Dad retired at 47, still collects a pension at 84.

A couple of his friends stayed longer than was customary, and they were referred to as skags.

BTW, DFD has an unbelievably stong retirees input into the union. They pay dues and they endorse politicians sympathetic to their cause.

The city of Detroit is more broke than Chicago...and yet the retirees have NEVER given up a benefit, they've GAINED them.

Our retirees should really be more proactive, to watch out for themselves, and for those who come after.

To 7/9 @ 1231.... With the shit this department has gone thru... Yes unfortunately the kids need more supervision.. Having sex and buying alcohol while working??? These are grown "responsible" adults?? The detectives can pick up the pace instead of playing video games all day/night.. Two hour lunches to boot.

7/09/2011 12:24:00 PM

STF up if you don't know what you're talking about. I am a det. and cannot remember the last time I went out for lunch.

I bring my lunch and eat at my desk, as do the other dets. in my unit. If I forget my lunch I don't eat, because I don't have the time to run out.

Maybe some dets. do that, but not all, so don't paint us all with the same brush. The det. unit is not 'the days of wine and roses.'

All of you hairgels coming on better pay attention to the 'oldsters' in the districts.

I came on in the mid-eighties, and feel like I was trained by the guys who were trained by guys who WERE the real police.

That's what this dept. is missing--there are no CHARACTERS anymore. The drunk, bulbous-red-nosed captains who held roll calls, while making sure they touched your breast during inspection (I'm female), the old-time Italians, the token Jewish guy...nobody bragged about what they'd done in their careers. You just KNEW they were the real deal.

I miss them all when I look around this dept. now. I consider myself lucky to have learned from them.

Of course, this was way before cameras were everywhere.

It was a different time. But people respected the police then--and if you showed up at a call with an old-timer, it was rare you had to make a repeat appearance.

Those guys are gone now, many of them dead...I can still see their faces, and hear their laughter...they were larger than life. So sad.

So the guys and gals who are in their fifties now, were trained by that breed...pay attention to them. You'll be glad you did.

When you get to the districts and see the old-timers, just stop to think of all they've seen and know. They probably know more than you ever will.

know a PO formely assigned to academy who was asked if he would like to be detailed back at academy to work on revising lesson plans. Classes to be just the bare minimum just like suburban recruits, plans to get recruits out of academy in 4 months max.

7/10/2011 12:40:00 AM

What are you smoking? The current time to train recruits is 7 months. Even after 7 months. lodding is afraid to let them go. The Suburban recruits have a different program that does not change. Every possible class is given to CPD recruits and after twenty weeks, they had enough. In the past they were able to graduate recruits after 22 weeks. 4 months is a fantasy.

really???? why dont you take a test. Then score good. Last I checked if you test well you will be made. Yes, 15 0r 20 people will be merit from a class of 100 or so but 85 people make it from scores. Enough with the conspiracy theory. Yes, clout on this department is huge but so is getting a high test score for promotion. If you get a good score you cant be touched... just wait for your number and you will be called. I made sgt and Lt all by scoring well on the test. What happened with you?? didnt study enough, didnt sign up for both classes, did comprehend well enough? What ever the case, dont say you cant go anywhere without clout because you can and will, you just have to have some type of a brain in your head...which clearly you dont. Instead of taking action you just want to sit around and bitch about it all day and claim that the entire system is bogus(I agree that a part of it is) but blame yourself for not scoring well... and no, they dont give out copys of the test to "the chosen few in the club" as people love to say because so and so did so good on a test. This department is full of whiners and complainers. Take inititive and GET YOURSELF PROMOTED. Things dont just come to you, you have to work for them. Way too many people think that because they were on a tac team for 7 years and have 11 years on the job they should be handed a spot or should get that merit spot... bullshit, score good on the test and study. merit spots once in a blue moon go to the guys that deserve them but they make up for a small percentage of the spots in a class so thats not an excuse... Is not 100 percent merit on lists.. the majority of spots are test scores... fuckin crybaby

The old Academy was located at 720 W. O'Brien. I was in one of the 1973 classes, and we had Sergio Oliva (Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe among other body building titles) as our P.T. instructor. All we did during P.T time was watch Sergio work out and lift weights. Didn't really learn much in the Academy, learned everything on the streets from the old guys - the keep your mouth shut kid, and do what I tell you to do routine. Guess what, it worked. Ahhhh the memories.

FYI officers are leaving this department left and right for greener pastures. If you don't have clout and wish to stay with CPD your entire career DO NOT ACCEPT A POSITION WITH THIS DEPARTMENT! For cloutless individuals this police department is a dead end job. I am originally from out of state and had no idea that this shitty city and department ran on phone calls. If I would have known that experience, ability, and work ethic were not valued here I would have never taken this job. Don't make the mistake I did.

Wow, I couldn't agree with you more. Now with the two tiered pension plan in place for new hires, you would really have to be a fool to accept the job without clout.

I have heard many different viewpoints on this. From lawyers I have talked to, they say that the language indeed points to no health care after that date.
Union people in all the police unions say that is not the intent of the court order; however, intent means nothing. What matters is what the language says. The union people also say past precedence has a lot to do with the health care continuing. In these days, I don't think the courts will support us there. Again, what does the language of the court order say?
Let's hear from a lawyer out there. We have more than a few on this department, in all ranks.

At the last two retirement seminars I attended (before pulling the pin last Fall), we were told the medical plan, as we know it, would go away on 01 Jan 2013. AND it would also go away for retirees.

They said there would 'most probably' be some kind of medical coverage, but it would be a lot different and whatever was offered to active members is what retired members would also be offered.

Basically, I'll have eighteen months in health care limbo until I have coverage at 60. I suppose I'll be paying around five hundred a month, single, unmarried, until I can hit medicare, and who knows what medicare will look like by then?

You're a lieutenant that scored well on the promotional exams? I find that difficult to believe after reading that diatribe littered with grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors. I'd run out of red ink trying to correct the above paragraph. By the way, for anyone on this job to take a test, they actually have to give one. We're going on seven years since the last detective's exam and six years since the last sergeant's exam. My guess is that you barely graduated high school. If you actually are a member of the CPD you got on through clout or the sheer luck of slipping through the cracks. You have about two years on the job and are still delusional about the entire promotional process on the CPD. Either that or you're a double merit clout baby that shouldn't even be the police let alone a lieutenant. One day you'll hopefully realize what an ignorant and misguided soul you are. Signed: A blue shirt with twelve years on the job that's still sitting on the current seven year old detective's list with a number under 30. (Because it's all legit!)

As much as things may suck for you guys...there's a reason that college kids and not so young college grads are trying to be the police. If you really think your salary and benefits suck, try switching gigs with some non-union, degree holding average joes and you may need to be admitted to an insane asylum. I got my master's, I'm a vet, still young and fresh in the face...and guys who aint did half of what I have are set because they applied and got called back and finished the academy. I'm not hating on those guys. Good for them..but nobody wants to hear your whining cuz outside of wearing a badge too many of these guys would be making peanuts for a living.

12:27 Are you shittin me? Do you have any idea what you are talking about? If you are a Lt. then no way you got the score legitimately. Merit promotions are 30% for sgt and lt, 20% for detective. Which means if you promote 100 sgts/lts, 30 will meritorious. If you make 100 dets., 20 will be meritorious. Sometimes they pick a number that is not perfectly divisible and round up, 21 meritorious in a class of 84 detectives. How you can be a boss and think the number is only 10 or 15 shows we are led by idiots. Are the answers given out, maybe, maybe not. Are the questions given out to some of the chosen, absolutely. Not hard to answer the questions you know are going to be on the test. Spare us your sanctimonious bullshit.
