Holy Crap
- Two Chicago police officers suffered minor injuries this morning in a single-vehicle crash on the Far Northwest Side, police said.
The crash happened at about 4 a.m. in the 6100 block of West Foster Avenue...
It looks like they ran into a bulldozer, but it was a lamppost. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and good weather at Driving School.

It hard to be leave that that vehicle was once dravible.
Damn! Looks like they took a glancing lick from a damn good sized IED... The entire front suspension assembly is gone? Glad the coppers are ok.
Wow, that picture is horrible. Minor injuries only? Very lucky. Speedy recovery.
Hello, Squad? Can you send me a Sgt over here?
I just returned to my car from my lunch location and discovered some damage on it.
Thank God the officers are still alive. Looks like that tahoe had some serious defects just waiting to fall apart.
WTF? Glad only minor injuries, no wonder the no pursuit in them now change.
If I had to attach myself to anything in this city during a tornado it'd be a lamp post. They're incredibly well constructed and extend more than ten feet into the ground. In the suburbs, you hit one and it'll collapse -- in the city, you hit one it's not giving one inch.
The CFD helped with the body work. I understand that at least on of the PO's had to be cut out.

it's hard to believe that you're not smashed to the gills.
Get well soon. It's amazing you officers only suffered minor injuries. Holy moley.

That is unless you are sitting in traffic at a traffic light and one of the poles rotting at the bottom just falls over on your car! Start looking at the base of these poles and you will see major corrosion. Be careful.
remember slow down. you can't help if you get in a wreck.
Holy crap is right!!! Did he/she have their eyes closed and driving at warp speed?
Whoever had the lamppost contract actually did good work. Solid construction.
Glad the coppers are okay with only minor injuries.
Is that a Tahoe?
upon vehicle inspection r/o discovered minor scratch to passenger side of vehicle
These trucks are not needed since there's a no chase policy in Chicago.
I can fix it. My dad has an awesome set of tools. He's a T.V. repair man.
Can't believe they walked away!
they hit one of the old trolly poles which are encased under ground 15 feet---- the newer posts snap off at the base when impacted--- glad those two coppers are going to be okay but looks to be preventable....
A good Sergeant could have written that up as "Parking Lot Damage!"
Parking lot damage?
Slight parking lot damage
Nothing that a little bondo can't take care of......
tahoes are not safe. be careful.
god speed brothers!!!
"Parking Lot Damage"
Parking lot damage...!
Uh, lamp posts DO NOT extend 10 feet into the ground... They are bolted to a concrete base and made to fall.. Another rocket scientist!!
Fire hydrants are also solid as Hell. Seen several hit by everything from SUV's to semis and no damage to the hydrant. Opened the entire side of the SUV up, just like the picture, and ripped the trailer wheels off the semi...
Stuff was made back when the city got value for the taxpayer's money...
Looks like parking lot damage to me.
Dino, I can't believe you survived that but I'm glad you did. Get well and enjoy the rest of the summer at home. Then bid to afternoons.
And that was before the crash.....Damn pool cars
I am happy the Officers are not seriously injured...
But I'm curious...
How Fast was the Driver going? And did we miss that those things Suck for Stability with a shitty center of gravity.
Not seeing comments of this being "Unit xxx12 responding to 10-1/ Citgo At Foster/Mobile reports Disturbance" or anything like that.

Ya think?
How long till the parts of the suburban show up on the chop shop market?
That tahoe will be back in service within the month.

Yo, rocket scientist, the old ones are anchored into concrete and do extend for quite a few feet. When they replace them, they use the bolt to the concrete ones. The old ones can damn near shear your car in two if you're moving real fast.
You must be a young guy because it seems you don't know about this. That was one of the things FTO Ergish told me in passing during our shift. "See those kid, they're set in poured concrete and if you hit it, you'll probably be killed because it won't budge, you can tell by the base, it's different from the new ones, see the difference?"
It's really annoying when you geniuses chime in with a "gotcha" and you don't know what you're talking about.

I believe it was "ultimate" set of tools, but thanks for the laugh. I literally laughed out loud. Nicely done Spicoli.
Yeah... If they hit a pole, it definitely WASN'T one of the newer "break-away" pot metal poles but one of the nearly century old cast iron poles that are as one prior poster noted, anchored DEEP in a concrete caisson & footing.
Look close. You'll see a lot of "old Chicago" structures that were built with no intention of ever being moved or replaced and if they are, they're a real sonny bitch to deal with.
O/T... Anybody remember the old "city mix" concrete?

It's hard to Believe that you might be on the job, and might be required to write a narrative on a case report!
It can be buffed out.

That happened in the A/3 parking lot the night of the big storm a few weeks ago. I think only a few personal cars were damaged. But, as we all know, the city won't pay for the repairs. Best part? The downed light pole is still laying in the lot and you can see where it was rusted through.

Happened to me about 12 years ago as I was returning home on I-55 south from the auto show detail. I light pole in the middle just fell, and I was doing about 65 with a trucker next to me, I had no where to go.
Foot off the gas, eyes closed, ass puckered and I just wished for the best. I ran over it and it blew all four tires, broke the two front rims and bent the two rear rims and tore off all the plastic stuff on the bottom of the car. If I recall correctly about 4500 in damage and then I was told that is was a natural event from IDOT and I had to pay out. You could clearly see all the rust on the base and on the bottom of the pole — it was natural, natural lack of maintenance.
They'll get driving school for the crash and a day for not having their in-car camera turned on.

WHY would the city pay for storm damage?

Maybe it could be fixed and used for the new security detail for Burke.
Thanks for the insight regarding the differences in the types of poles. The location that I work at is mostly, or possibly all, break away connections (airport). I wasn't on the outdoor crew all that long.
I can only imagine that running new cable through those older type poles that extend below grade has to be more challenging.
Good luck to the police officers who survived this crash. Vehicles can be replaced, all of you are priceless.
Stay safe out there.

Truer words were never spoken. Doing any type of rehab work in older Chicago buildings is a real bitch. You can never be 100% certain what you might run into.
Daaaammnnn!!!!

it's an adventure.
I hit a pole doing 30 in a crown vic and it collapsed. However it still went into the car about two feet! Luckily it was near the rear of the car and not near my partner and I or we would have been fubar. Point is break away or not its still a 1000 pound metal pole. Hit it too fast amd it can kill you. Careful out there boys and girls.
If it was an old "surface lines" trolley pole some of them were also filled with concrete to strengthen them and\or to use up any extra concrete.
If the pole was too close to the roadway then they might be able to sue the city. Poles must be three feet back from the curb line to comply with FHWA regulations.
The only break Away poles in the City are on south LSD, those babies are flying off every weekend. The rest are direct buried poles or anchor base poles.
The brave Tahoe gave up its life that others might live.
A toast to Chevrolet and its fine engineers.
"Honest Sarge, I was driving down the street during the course of a routine patrol when all of a sudden I was attacked by an Al Queda terrorist disguised as a light pole.
When I saw him, I knew I had to take him out for my safety and that of the taxpaying public."
That's okay. It didn't work for my either. But mine was disguised as a tree.
Glad the officers are o.k.
The last line about driving school really cracked me up, 'cause that's where I ended up too.
For God's sake, and your family, please>>>
WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT!
These officers probably were, speedy recovery.
Please watch this, the most beautiful seat belt commercial ever from Great Britton. It takes just a few seconds, no words are spoken.
