Remembering Thor
Time flies, but the wounds never heal completely. One year later:
- Chicago Police Officer Thor Soderberg was shot and killed in the line of duty one year ago. On Thursday morning, Brookfield Zoo was the site of an event to celebrate his life.
Thursday morning's ceremony was attended by those who Officer Thor Soderberg knew and loved. The remembrance service sought to not only celebrate his life but also move his dream of introducing city kids to nature one step closer to being a reality.

I think of Thor everyday as I'm changing in and out of my uniform in the parking lot of the 006th dist. There are 275 lockers in the mens locker room and only 205 male police officers assigned/detailed to 006!
RIP Thor. Your memory is carried on by your extremely eloquent wife and your friends.
So sad. What a guy he was.
That it's been an entire year since then (seems like a couple months ago) stands as a reminder of how finite our own time on this spinning dirt-orb really is...
Wow! It's been a year? God Bless Him!

Savage mob attacks police and fire in Peoria.
Thor, myself and three other people on my team were some of the first to arrive on scene at our station last year when this unecessary tragedy happened. All three of us looked at the stone in front of the station today, as we have for the last 365 days, and couldn't believe it has been a year already. God bless you and your family. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN! I was extremely sad for our loss that day, however proud to be CPD at the same time! Rest in peace. You TRULY deserve it.
I worked with Thor in 006 back in the day. He was a stand up officer then. Rest in peace brother.
An old sixth district brother.
I remember when I was sworn in, as a CPD officer, I wondered who will be the first person I lose...
...6 months later, I was burying someone I knew since 6th grade.
Funny thing- TIME. Time tears open old wounds, many times scared over until the next memory.
May God bless anyone willing risk their own lives for Society, a Society wanting to live in ignorance
I didn't know Thor, but reading the stories after his murder made me realize that a very decent man was lost.
I still recall how he ran races while helping a blind man to run.
The Chicago cops who were killed on and off duty in the last few years were among the best of us.
Man, Thor was so fast in the scenarios. I ran 4 blocks trying to catch him. Not even close! Then there was the time he had all that gear on during the fight scenes in bridge week. Iod for about a week. Thank you for your time office. I think about you and what you would tell us on those dark nights when my partner and i are going through the gangways and alleys of the west side. Humble wArrior.
RIP office

It was most unfortunate that Phather Phaker was there to ruin the event. At least he didn't speak. He was just there to get free stuff from the family for his "flock."
Partial blame should be leveled at the idiot bureaucrat that wouldn't allow Special Employment Coppers to use the locker room to change clothes...
Thor's memory will forever be kept alive by his 'police family,' now and in the future.
The term "Never Forget" are more than just words, moreover a duty and an honor to remember ALL of our fallen heroes.
September will again revisit all those heroes at our annual Candle Light Vigil at the Gold Star Memorial and Park when all the individual names are read at this solemn ceremony.
Make a point of remembering our 'finest' by your attendance and support. If work or family obligations preclude you ability to attend, say a prayer in your own way on behalf of our fallen.
We Are All We Have.
Rest in peace brother. You were a great officer and a awesome instructor. Its good to know a piece of you is with many of the officers on the street today. God bless you and your family.

We can ALL thank Officer Thorp for making sure his memory never fades. She made sure that stone you saw out front on 61/Racine was erected. If it wasn't for her tireless efforts, that stone would not be there. She was the officer who while in a leg cast walked out of the building firing at the offender who killed Thor. She is a TRU hero. How do they reward the TOP COP? She's in 007...they couldn't even get her on any of the Area Task Forces. It was a sham. If I could, I'd give her my spot. She deserves the best for what she did!

First off RIP Thor, you were always my favorite instructor in the academy.
RE:

I thought per Eddie Johnson all the unoccupied lockers were to be cut on 16 jun. I guess this will just forever be a problem there. No one knows who is assigned to cut them either.
R.I.P. Thor.....
Too bad the City thinks less about our security in our own police stations and parking lots, than they do about cowtowwing and pandering to phoney Reverends and Alder-Weasels with NO need for armedPolice Chauffers, and are just too pompous, arrogant, and cheap to pay for drivers thenselves. Taxpayers Money for everything, except to help and pay the Police Officers who risk their lives daily to protect us all. The true Demmocommunist mentality in action... Abject failure and reverse Logic, trademarks of the police-hating Democrat Party
I miss you buddy
Your training saved my life more than a few times....
I can't believe you're gone

RIP Thor. I met him once, and could tell he was a great guy. He and my old roommate had just started dating at the time (his widow). They both seemed very smitten and I got the biggest kick out of that. From what I have read and heard, he was a real stand up guy and larger than life. I still have his memorial card in my car so I am reminded of him and his memory.
Words cannot describe the evil of the beast that killed Thor, or the decency of the man he killed. Rest In Peace, Thor.
I didn't know Thor but God Bless you and your family.
Lets not forget the Sgt who ran out after Officer Thorp ran out and actually shot the offender. Dont you think he might deserve, some or maybe most of the credit for actually shooting the offender or is she the only true hero
I think this post should be about the memory of a fallen officer whose life was taken, tragically. Not who deserves credit for who the true hero is. This is what is wrong with our department. Too many officers wanting recognition and too many officers start bad mouthing each other. Please no more comments regarding who did what. Take
The time and write a nice memory of Thor. Although I never met you Thor you are truly an inspiration to all. I went to your wake and the stories I heard about
You were truly heart warming. From what I heard so many recruits have gained so much from
Your teachings, your words of wisdom and your
Guidance, which will never be forgotten. You are In heaven, an angel. God bless your family.
Partial blame should be leveled at the idiot bureaucrat that wouldn't allow Special Employment Coppers to use the locker room to change clothes...
this was 100% false, the officer working the desk told them they couldnt have a locker, nothing about changing.
I don't understand how they find our best ones. I try to follow your example and your wife's words...It's not what you say, it's what you do that matters. I miss you, my friend.
Since it seems like this blog may be more effective than CPD emails..I was hoping to get some info posted on ILCOPS Cycle Across Illinois, the 400 mile bike ride fundraiser for the families of police killed in the line of duty. It is 14-17 July, Alton, IL to CPD HQ -ETA is 1300. At HQ, we have an EOW ceremony for each of our 5 fallen heroes (we are still working on having Blake recognized, but it won't be in time for the ride)and link with the Pedal for the Police to ride to the Gold Star Families Park & Memorial. Donations can be made online razoo.com keywords ILCOPS Chicago and more info at ILCOPS.ORG, in person at gun registration or to me (Maureen Bresnahan.) Our goal is approx. $1 per officer - $10,000 total or $2000 for each of our devastated families from 2010 alone. We are more than halfway there.
If you don't know what ILCOPS does, consider yourself very lucky. They serve the families when the worst happens. As one survivor so aptly put it, "If it weren't for ILCOPS, my family wouldn't be standing." They do their job well, but they do it quietly - as it is for the families and nothing else. To attest to this fact, we have several family members and friends of Michael Flisk and Thor Soderberg riding this year.
Thank you!!!
Did you know that sergeant who stole all that dough from his union is still getting to use comp time? It's on the A&As - easy to confirm, but seems so wrong. I know, innocent til proven guilty.
The lockers are only part of the story. There is normally an officer who does lot security. This officer was on furlo and since the money in the city budget that is supposed to be for the police is redirected elsewhere, there was no one to replace this officer/fill that position. Now the city is trying to cut securty at HQ as well. How many more of us will be executed?
Lets not forget the Sgt who ran out after Officer Thorp ran out and actually shot the offender. Dont you think he might deserve, some or maybe most of the credit for actually shooting the offender or is she the only true hero

Let me say this, Sgt K saved my ass that day and LC's ass and God knows who else. We are not hero's. We did the job we were trained to do and unfortunately lost one of our own that day. I hope with all my heart that any one of you out there that wears our star would have done the same. As far as the memorial at 61st, WE did it so that nobody would ever forget his sacrifice. Now get off your computers. and live your lives and tell the people in your lives everyday how much you love and appreciate them. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Easy Bozo. The thread is "Remembering Thor" not who killed the shitbag.

Dont forget Sgt Kaczynksi.
Thor was the true hero here. He gave his life for his profession. Both the P.O. and Sgt. Did their job! And it was a damn fine job I might add! I would gladly go to work with either of you!
I'm sorry but Thor did not give his life for the job. Bryant Brewster (the piece of shit) took his life.
I was honored to be his friend. He loved living, loved teaching, and loved learning new things. I think of you everyday and miss you beyond words.
RE: Donations for families of the fallen...
also gratefully received at Area 4- Violent Crimes.
RIP THOR, GOD BLESS.
Thor was one of the most decent police officers I have ever had a pleasure to serve with. I remeber when he came to 006 and was so humble, soon after he became a good friend and a great police officer. For those old 6th district officers you know exactly what I am talking about. For all of the recruits that he taught you were taught by a man who knew how to be the police and always acted professionally. CPD lost one of our finest. Please remeber we only have each other to rely on and there is no reason for our thin blue line to become any thinner. Those officers who responded did a great job in a tragic situation and no matter how you look at it acted heroically. God bless and stay safe! Thor I miss you.
it was a nice memorial in his honor. the only low point was seeing fr. fakir there.
