Cycle Across Illinois

Might be a bit of a warm ride, but for a worthy cause:
  • Since it seems like this blog may be more effective than CPD emails..I was hoping to get some info posted on ILCOPS Cycle Across Illinois, the 400 mile bike ride fundraiser for the families of police killed in the line of duty. It is 14-17 July, Alton, IL to CPD HQ -ETA is 1300. At HQ, we have an EOW ceremony for each of our 5 fallen heroes (we are still working on having Blake recognized, but it won't be in time for the ride)and link with the Pedal for the Police to ride to the Gold Star Families Park & Memorial. Donations can be made online razoo.com keywords ILCOPS Chicago and more info at ILCOPS.ORG, in person at gun registration or to me (Maureen Bresnahan.) Our goal is approx. $1 per officer - $10,000 total or $2000 for each of our devastated families from 2010 alone. We are more than halfway there.

If you don't know what ILCOPS does, consider yourself very lucky. They serve the families when the worst happens. As one survivor so aptly put it, "If it weren't for ILCOPS, my family wouldn't be standing." They do their job well, but they do it quietly - as it is for the families and nothing else. To attest to this fact, we have several family members and friends of Michael Flisk and Thor Soderberg riding this year.

    Thank you!!!
Good luck riders.

Police say wearing video cameras offers protection

By TERRY COLLINS
Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Before hitting the streets, Oakland police officer Huy Nguyen's routine usually goes something like this:

Gun ready? Check. Bulletproof vest strapped? Check.

Body camera secured? Check.

Wait, body camera?

"It feels uncomfortable when I don't have it," Nguyen said of the video camera that is smaller than a smartphone and is worn on his chest. "You can never be too safe."

Oakland and hundreds of other police departments across the country are equipping officers with tiny body cameras to record anything from a traffic stop to a hot vehicle pursuit to an unfolding violent crime. The mini cameras have even spawned a new cable reality TV series, Police POV, which uses police video from Cincinnati, Chattanooga and Fort Smith, Ark.

Whether attached to shirt lapels or small headsets, the cameras are intended to provide more transparency and security to officers on the street and to reduce the number of misconduct complaints and potential lawsuits.

"First and foremost, it protects the officers, it protects the citizens and it can help with an investigation and it shows what happened," said Steve Tidwell, executive director of the FBI National Academy Associates in Quantico, Va. "It can level the playing field, instead of getting just one or two versions. It's all there in living color, so to speak."

In Oakland, where the department is still under federal supervision because of a case in which four officers were caught planting drugs on suspects a decade ago, the cameras are like another set of eyes, said Capt. Ed Tracey.

Last year the department began a pilot program with about a dozen patrol officers wearing the VIEVU (Vee-view) body camera, and now officials hope to equip at least 350 officers by the end of summer.

Tracey said the cameras are proving helpful to a budget-strapped police force that has reduced staff while covering what is still one of the country's most dangerous cities, even though overall crime has trended downward.

The cameras, which run about $125 apiece, were brought instead of purchasing video equipment for squad cars, he said, noting that the smaller devices can also be mounted on a patrol car dashboard.

Officers are required to turn on their cameras for calls including traffic stops and possible searches. They are also required to download their video within a day and they are not allowed to edit or manipulate it. The video can be stored up to five years.

I'm not a bike rider, but do you need volunteers for anything?

Even besides the ride? I have a background in writing/promotion.

Thank you for your kind hearts and all you do.

Will be donating momentarily.

"Police say wearing video cameras offers protection"

Video saved that officer in Seattle who punched the heavyset black girl after she attacked him over a jaywalking ticket.

Otherwise the story would have said "Cop attacks teen girl".

There are dozens or hundreds of other similar stories out there.

Instead of fearing video we should embrace it. Just showing the public the crap we deal with on an often daily basis will shock them. Put it on a public access TV channel.

"Here we have Ray Ray stumbling home drunk after stabbing his baby's mama over a dispute over diaper money."

"Here we have Patty from Canaryville waking up from being passed out on meth and attacking 8 police officers with a sock full of billiard balls and a potato."

"Here we have a Mr 'Van Ecko' high fiving his friends after sucker punching a much smaller man on the street". Ooops, technical difficulties ladies and germs.....that tape just erased itself."

ALL you people SHOULD start getting used to Cycling across Illinois , because if Obama gets re-elected, that's EXACTLY what you will all be doing, after gasoline goes up over $10.00 a gallon, which if you think is not possible, you are totally STUPID, as gasoline prices have risen approximately 60% 100% since Barry O took office.

Thank you to all of the volunteers not just from this organization, but the many others who give their time and hearts to those in despair.

I was lucky enough to organize a benefit for a copper who had a very sick daughter, and wife, many years ago.

People told me I'd be lucky to raise 10K, and we ended up raising over 40K. From that benefit, a lot of good things happened. So many people worked really hard, and then afterwards organized to be able to do it again and again.

The benefit was for Mike Maher. I haven't talked to him in years, but I hope his family is well, and he is enjoying retirement.

Mike Flisk's sister is the unit secretary where I work. I feel ill-equipped to help her. She will never, ever, be the same. Her parents and her family will never be the same. Every time I see her I want to cry.

If you can't donate time, please take a moment to make a donation. In such a big department, tragedy may have eluded you--but trust me, it's closer than you think.

Her brother put in for time-due that day, but was denied. In the blink of an eye, at the whim of a dog-ass criminal, this family's life was shattered. This criminal executed him--and his family, including his elderly parents, his sisters, his brothers, nieces, nephews, and all the rest, will carry this incredible burden with them forever, until the end of their days.
