- The number of shootings by police this year, as detailed by Chicago Sun-Times reporter Frank Main, is disturbing. And we know there will always be cops who are too quick to pull the trigger.
Really? Can the Slum Times cite an example this year of cops being too quick to pull the trigger? As we recall, at least 40 out of 41 shootings have been with armed subjects. And it's been literally years since a Chicago Police shooting has been found to be unjustified by IPRA, OPS, the Department, the Police Board and by any court in the area.
What should be disturbing is the doubling of attacks on police from 2001 to 2011. Almost 2,000 attacks a year on the very people tasked with keeping society safe. We won't even mention the neighborhoods where 80-90% of these attacks occur because the Slum Times readers might be offended by something resembling the truth.
We detect the unseen hand of Mope-rah as this tracks with her typical anti-police agenda and she sits on the Slum Times editorial Board and happens to have people shot on her block every month or two. That's probably the fault of the police, too.
How about an appearance by Pat Camden rebutting this slanted, biased and ridiculous attack on law enforcement? Stuff like this should be countered as soon as it hits the streets.

No argument from any sensible person. The number of police shootings is indicative of the level of violence and disrespect out there on the streets. Not just toward the police, but everyone.
And we know there will always be cops who are too quick to pull the trigger.
Better to be a little too quick than just a little bit slow.
Does the Police Academy still have that video firearms training system? I would love to run some of the anti-police media types through it.
I remember on TV about 25 years ago there was a show where the liberal types were run through the video firearms training scenarios.
All were selected for their belief that the police were trigger happy. When they went through the scenarios, they blasted everything that moved. Then their performance was evaluated by a police investigator. When the libs' shootings were outside of policy and the law, they were told "You will be fired, indicted and go to jail." Ran them through again, now they are scared. Most ended up dead. All had different opinions of the police.

In fairness the rest of the editorial is very pro police. Small consolation, I know.
That being said I don't recall a "bad" police shooting in Chicago in recent years. "Bad" meaning unjustified.
Truly unjustified police shootings in Chicago or elsewhere are thankfully rare things. Of course perhaps I'm wrong. Some people felt shooting that four legged cougar in Roscoe Village a few summers back was wrong.
Some people believe police should have to "take fire" before firing their own weapons. I call those people dumbasses, but that's just me.
Whether it's luck, training or something in the culture of the department we just haven't had the type of situations like the NYPD has had where unarmed men are shot dozens of times by multiple officers.
We did have the shooting at the 95th Street Red Line station, but that was at least 7 years ago.
It can't be because we have less violence than NYC. Our murder rate is nearly three times there murder rate.
Haven't read the Izvestia-Tribune or the Pravda-Times in years.

If possible the FOP should file a class action suit, on behalf of all CPD officers,against the Sun-Times for slander and defamation.
As the number of shootings and homicides in the city rise to challenge the old numbers to the point that we no longer can say violent crime is fallen, we must shift our attention now and point to the police as the cause of our violent crime problems.

And the good news is that most of the reader comments basically told him he is full of shit and that CPD does a great job. They are supporting the street coppers not the media. Cop shootings are on the rise in 2011 and Sun-Times reporter Frank Main asks why [“Shootings by Chicago cops soar — but why?” Sunday]?
That’s an easy question for a civilian who uses a computer for his job and doesn’t wear a bulletproof vest and carry a semi-automatic weapon.
My job is the preservation of life and property. As a member of the Chicago Police Department for 15 years, one reason shootings are up is the thugs/gangbangers don’t care and have no fear of the police along with no respect for themselves or anybody else. They have become more brazen, from carjackings to armed robberies to drive-by shootings.
When the police are called and we do our job and make an arrest and it leads to a police shooting, all you see on the news or in the paper is the one or two misinformed fools who say the police overreacted or the bad guy didn’t have a gun.
These are the same people who were never on the scene and just heard about what happened.
There were almost 2,000 assaults and batteries on police officers last year — more than double from 10 years ago.
Illana Rosenzweig, director of the Independent Police Review Authority, said it could be police training or police policy. Another civilian who has no idea what it takes to do this job, just like CeaseFire Director Tio Hardiman, a civilian who has no clue what it takes to be a police officer. Mr. Hardiman says we have a “license to kill” mind-set. What a foolish statement from a man who sees first hand that these thugs don’t care and have no respect for anyone.
Mr. Hardiman also said young people don’t have any training on how to deal with the police. Do these thugs have parents? I thought respect was taught at home.
Have you noticed no Chicago police officers have been charged with criminal wrongdoing involving shootings? I’m sure it’s because of our training and policy.
We police are the line between anarchy and chaos, and when the line is crossed, we will do our job.

I don't buy the times. I would like to know what this reporter, who should report only the facts and not his opinion, used to base his opinion on? His gut? Some statistics that are floating around? Is he generalizing? Sad bullshit that should not be printed. I retired some years ago and I learned early on never to talk to a reporter, period. Most of them are lying scum who will twist things for a good headline.
Two words-economic boycott! Ensure that you and your's never buy that rag again. Take the time to send a letter, or an email, to the advertisers in the Sun-Times detailing your displeasure with the false and provocative editorial content contained therein and stop buying the products advertised. If the owners of the Sun-Times know anything, they know about money. Lets give them a little less money to know about!

Action is always faster than reaction unless your GOD. If you see the barrel of that weapon you are technically already to late and could have been shot. People don't realize that. Last night in 008 two officers on viewed an armed robbery. They observed victim with hand in the air and offender pointing a gun to victims head. After a foot pursuit offender captured. The victims were genuine people and offender typical black pants withe t-shirt scum-bag. Police could have shot him after he refused to drop weapon and ran, but they did not.
