McCarthy Apologizes

The only question is, "Why?"

We get that he's the head of the organization, but he wasn't even on our radar for an apology. He wasn't here. He had nothing to do with this report. No disrespect, but he probably wouldn't know Officer Bailey's name in any event and quite frankly, we wouldn't expect him to. He has no ties to our fallen except in passing as a part of the thin blue line in cities across America. We wouldn't presume to know the names and circumstances of every NYPD copper who was killed in the line of duty.

We would, however, expect our own exempt staff to remember Officer Bailey's name. Especially with the surrounding publicity after his murder. Part of Daley's bodyguard detail; killed a month prior to retirement; one of three officers murdered in a particularly short period of time; eulogized by the mayor himself. We have no reason to believe McCarthy would have known any of this.

But a whole bunch of other people should have. And they are the ones who should be apologizing.

UPDATE: The video of McCarthy addressing this debacle was in the Tribune "beta video" section, which we now can't seem to find. Anyone have the link or did the Tribune pull it like the rest of the media has been pulling the gang banger photo?

Where is the link to his apology?

Or a link to where and when this subject was brought to his attention?

I've been losing respect for McCarthy with every stupid move he has made...

...on this occasion, if he did apologize, he probably does it because he is ashamed of those exempts.

It's like being at a bar with your obnoxious drunk buddy after he makes a fool of himself in front of the a group of hot chicks...

...just tell the ladies, "I apologize for my friend, he's half retarded, NOW, who wants to come back to my condo"

Well, SCC, the reason he is the one who apologizes is for the very reasons you mention. Since he was not one of the inattentive idiots who signed off on the order, his apology prevents one of those others from having to apologize and take the blame, thus not creating any heat for those poor, so-overworked-that-they-can't-read-an-order exempts.

Slain cop mistakenly listed on report of low-performing officers

Sun-Times Staff reports

Share

Michael Bailey was one of the names on a list of low-performing Chicago Police officers sent to supervisors earlier this month.

Their work activity was “lower than other officers performing the same assignment” from Jan. 1 through June 6, the memo said.

The problem: Bailey was shot to death outside his house in July 2010 during an apparent robbery attempt after completing work on a security detail for then-Mayor Richard M. Daley.

The list — with other officers’ names besides Bailey’s blacked out — was recently posted on the Second City Cop blog, which comments on the Chicago Police Department. The anonymous blog demanded an apology from the department.

On Tuesday, police Supt. Garry McCarthy was asked about the mistake during an unrelated news conference.

“It’s embarrassing, don’t get me wrong,” he said. “But by the same token, it’s a mistake, not a mistake of the heart.”

McCarthy added that he understands “how things can slip through.”

Accountability. The Witches of Eastwick can do as they please with the end result being only praise. No repercusions for faulty, shotty, inaccurate, insufficient, incorrect or ignorant work. Only praise.

Resignations tendered would be the least they could do as a show of remorse and regret for their actions. Problem is, they have none, as well as no accountability.

Great examples we have to follow. Another problem we face is if we follow that very example we are shown we get slaughtered!

Nothing will come of this, Skahill and the two knuckleheads will skate. The fall guys will be the Sgt or PO that compiled the list and wrote the to/from for Skahill.

But, if PO Bailey is still listed on the books, that means he is still counted as manpower. The other posters are correct--how many retired, dead or otherwise terminated POs are still being counted as manpower? I know an officer who left CPD months ago for greener pastures and he is still listed as working when an alpha check is done.

I call on John Kass or Mark Brown to follow up on this, those two live for this stuff.

As usual when an exempt fucks up (Cuello, Skahill, Brown, etc etc etc)it's just a mistake, and the bosses laugh it off and nothing happens in any sort of punishment.
But we(lowly p.o.s) make a mistake after a quick err in judgement and we are disciplined monetarily (suspensions), fired, or put in prison(Cozzi). Fuck this. 20 years of pushing these broken down beat cars, I'm done. I could pull the pin anytime now. NOT REALLY OFF TOPIC,

More than an Apology needed if the is anywhere near true.

Can someone who was there confirm this story from the 10th District.

McCarthy was at the station yesterday afternoon meeting with Westside Aldermen.

Meanwhile out on the street, a six foot 200 pound gang banger interferes in a street stop with 10th District Officers. He is told to go away, but gets loud and abusive and disrupts the police process. They go to arrest him and he elbows a much shorter officer in the face possible breaking his orbital socket. Three cops take him down and take him away.

The officer is taken to the hospital and will be off with a lot of pain for a long while.

Amazingly, Aggravated Battery to a P.O. is approved by the A.S.A. and thank-you to whoever that was.

A flashmob of the offender's homies descend upon the 10th District Station lobby and cause a disturbance while McCarthy is there with the Aldermen. The gangbangers are thrown out of the station by the desk crew.

The story is that McCarthy then goes out and talks to the gangbangers for about 20 minutes.

McG never addresses a roll call, visits the injured officer or says anything to the troops. But the gangbangers...

Someone who was there please confirm or deny or fill in the blanks of this story.

And of course, a speedy recovery to Officer W. M.

While there is no excuse for this happening, it would seem that there is an error in programming somewhere. All anyone signing off on the report would have had to do was look at the 1ST name and say hey, this isn't right!

If you pull up officer activity in any district, you will see some officers on the list that have been retired 5+ years on it. No joke. My relatively new W/C asked me about some of the names. If you look on the CLEAR employee number search, you will see that only exempts/news affairs can search for inactive members.

My guess is there is a flag in the database for inactive (instead of keeping inactive in a different database) members that the programmer who created the Crystal Report for activity doesn't/didn't know about and therefore didn't check for.

Amazing that the likes of Goldstein and Lewin didn't catch it though....

I am sure many of us cried out loud when reading scc's original post. Its because it broke our heart. Even though we all know the exempt don't care about us, this confirmed it in a HUGE way.

That hurt turns to anger because this was not a mistake, Supt. This was another example of your exempt staff's continued display of incompetence. This proves one of two things:

1. Your exempt staff do not read nor review any reports that come across their desk before affixing their signature to it. Isn't that part of all of our jobs? Isn't that just common sense and self-respect for one's job?

2. Your exempt staff did read the report but have no common decency nor self-respect for their position to recall the names of officers killed in the line of duty - especialy of those who were killed during their tenure.

Whomever signed that report and forwarded it on should be immediately demoted publicly by the superintendent. When an exempt is being paid over 150grand a year on this department to make decisions that affect our lives on this job - we expect NO mistakes.

But since you called it a mistake, Supt, pull a CR on those exempt involved because they did violate a rule and regulation of this department.

"Our duty in the way we can serve Michael's memory is to never forget," added Central District Cmdr. Chris Kennedy. "I know it is true that a day hasn't passed in the last year when Michael hasn't been thought of by those who stand here, as well as so many who couldn't attend."

--------------------------------

What a crock of shit. All publicity talk. Well now we know that many days have passed through many exempts hands and obviously NONE OF THEM REMEMBERED MICHAEL BAILEY!!

She is certainly right about the absolute and total failure of the war on drugs to serve any useful purpose.

Being as the war has proven to be unwinnable, it is best to just declare a truce of some sort.

Not sure just how to do that, but it would free up some LE resources to deal with more pressing matters than a few joints or pills.

Regarding Walter Jacobsen being "pro-police":

Don't think that this editorial in any way, shape or form means that Skippy is on the polices' side or likes them.

He is "supporting" the police now because the public is finding out just how violent the street savages are. The public knows that the police have taken a less aggressive posture in the last few years, largely because of media criticism, much of it from bombastic liberal blowhards like Walter.

This is a popular editorial position to appeal to a certain moneyed target market. They are trying to get the working middle class to tune into them again, because their declining ratings are hurting their advertising rates.
