Once Again, Faulty Logic

  • High-tech security cameras could be coming to some Chicago Public Schools.

The system would beam images directly to Chicago police, an would be installed at schools with the most security issues, in a bid to create a safer atmosphere in the nation's third-largest school district, with more than 400,000 students.

CPS Superintendent Jean Claude Brizard said the system would be worth the $7 million is would cost, even though CPS is currently experiencing a $612 million deficit.

Eighty security cameras will be installed in 14 troubled high schools in the city.

Security cameras were installed at Fenger High School in a pilot program, following the beating death of Derrion Albert in 2009.

But if memory serves, the infamous snuff video was taken by a hand-held cellular phone before being obtained by the police department. Security cameras would have had nothing to do with the case as the fight happened a block or more away from the school.

And this paragraph is just ignorant:
  • Fenger has more than three dozen cameras at entrances, hallways and outside the building. Those cameras have helped police arrest a suspect in several burglaries. The school has seen a 59 percent drop in misconduct, and 79 percent drop in arrests since the security cameras were installed.
Gee, that couldn't have anything to do with the fact that the entire district is held down at Fenger for upwards of an hour around dismissal time, leading to an artificial police presence that, while keeping the assholes at Fenger under control, dooms the rest of the district to a backlog that won't be solved for hours and denies other victims of crimes any sort of police response whatsoever?

The same situation can be found at many other high schools where the entire watch ends up babysitting these future doctors, lawyers and astronauts - Clemente, Hyde Park, Sullivan, Morgan Park, Orr, Marshall, Dunbar, Tilden, Bogan, Wells, Senn, Juarez, Julian and Farragut. But don't worry:
  • There has also been a proposal to reduce the number of police officers present at these schools, to re-deploy them to the street. These cameras could end up replacing cops at schools.
Good luck with that.

I just want to know is who got the contract for this golden nugget. Just as well have a police presence inside the school instead of cameras nobody is watching anyway. Never heard of a camera making an arrest or bringing order to a situation. What a total waste. The Chicago Way.

what really cracks me up is how shitty these cameras are. video taken from thee honor students stolen iphones shows the criminal activity clearer. if that fenger student beating bullshit was caught on a security camera, what would you see? a bunch of blurry black teens (i mean honor students) beating the shit out of each other. how is it that even cheap camera phones do a better job than these apparent security and pod cameras? i have seen dozens of security tapes and maybe 1 out of every 100 shows a decent image. going on youtube now is the way to see videos clearer.

Why are these idiots so stuck on buying cameras? Does Daley's kid have an interest in the company?

There has to be a kickback going on here, because no one could be stupid enough to believe that cameras reduce crime.

Did anyone ever think of how many police you could hire with 7 million dollars?

Getting rid of Po Po shouldn't be CPS objectives. Priviatizing their own security should be the goal to saving money.

As it stands right, CPS security don't have to get a PERC card or any type of certification training (only a 3-day weekend certification seminar/party), and they aren't drug tested.

Do you see where I'm going with the drug testing? Older gangbangers and friends/family members of shitheads can often be seen patroling/sitting on their asses in CPS hallways.

The reporters never ask who is watching the images filmed by the cameras. The answer is no one. We do POD missions every day but no one has time to sit there and watch the monitor. Numerous times I have had jobs that occurred very close to pods, one was in the crosswalk almost directly below the POD. No images, no info, nothing. Guy beat half to death, no witnesses, either human or electronic. But people think the PODs make them safe. Sheep.

My only question is, ' After spending another 7 million dollars on cameras while already in an existing CPS 412 million dollar deficit, who is going to watch those cameras that would be beamed to the local police station?'

in relation to Fenger, TRU also had 16 p/os and 1 sgt assigned to Fenger and Julian everyday. So besides holding down all the beat cars they brought in outside resources. Oh yeah OPY was there also.
Thx to 9 fingers and Gmack, some of those outside units are back in districts. Yes, the distrits need help, but you still need a mobil force. The 100 guys you put in all the areas arent going to cut it. They are spread all over the city, in different dog's, let's see what these mental midgets come up with next.

Just think, if these cameras actually catch something worthwhile, which they usually don't, we can make copies for the families of the next deceased CPS student. What better tribute than to play a video of the final moments of Pookey's life.....right up until the PO PO arrive minutes later.
CAMERAS ARE NOT COPS!

These cameras are a good thing because it will free up officers protecting our children -- we can then redeploy the officers over at the important aldermen's houses and the important ex-mayors houses so that they are safe.

Oh yes they are!

That's what's important. That Chicago's royal families be protected.

Moar camera's please.

Give the victims their Kodak moments so that they have them to put up at the ad-hoc memorials and hospital rooms across the citay.

I take it they fixed all the emergency phones in the underground garages, that the entire -- citywide, right? -- warning loudspeaker system works properly now, that the FCC licenses have been renewed on the OEMC super-commo-van this year (Oops!), and that we are moving along...

Pay no attention to reports here that it takes weeks, or months, or never, for the private Daley-legacy "City Lights" to come and fix a simple street light...

P.S. How much "paid advertising" is actually coming in to cover the maintenance of Daley's ridiculous J.C. Decaux-franchised Euro-glass bus shelters, as we were promised? The ad space either seems to be empty or filled with expensively-printed four-color-process "public service" posters from the City of Chicago -- about space heaters, being pregnant, etc.

I saw an ad for Washington Mutual ("WaMu") once, but then the bank collapsed...

Not a good idea. Also not a good idea to have coppers sitting on their behinds at these schools either. We need a school unit with supervision and zero tolerance. How about some new blood at the schools to handle the situation.

The biggest reason for the decrease in crime in and around Fenger is this: there was approximately 75% less kids going there last school year from the year before. All the kids that were being bussed in from Altgeld Gardens are now going to a new school out there, and a fair number of the others left before last year started and went to other schools. I believe Fenger had 1775 kids going to school there during the 2009-10 school year, but only 480 last year.
There's your decrease in crime, not the cameras.

Throwing more resources at Fenger and the other targeted high schools is like stopping flooding on the Mississippi by building ever higher levies downstream, instead of working on the problem upstream where it originates. Out of control elementary schools and middle schools, which don't have state of the art camera systems, on duty police officers, or more than a lone security officer, keep sending seasoned gang bangers to hapless neighborhood high schools. Need to spend some serious money in those feeder elementary schools (upstream), and then you may see lasting changes in high schools (downstream). Otherwise, it'll continue to be the never ending, wasteful and useless exercise that it is. Without School Officers in these schools, throwing sandbags on top of the levies, they'd be hopelessly inundated.
