McGoatee?

  • Now he looks like a Chicago cop.

Garry McCarthy sported a goatee when he was named Chicago Police superintendent in May.

But on Sunday, he shaved off the beard after taking classes at the Chicago Police Academy and becoming a certified Illinois law enforcement officer. He didn’t part with his moustache, though.

To wear a Chicago Police uniform, which McCarthy intends to do when he takes the oath of office on Friday, a sworn officer must comply with the department’s 1998 general order on uniforms and personal equipment

It was always a fake controversy. We've still got serious problems to be addressed in this Department and a goatee wasn't really one of them. The uniform wearing will continue to bug people, too. But it's what's inside the uniform that will end up making or breaking this superintendency, and we've already seen a lot of what's inside over the beach goonings and the Sabina speech. The upcoming exempt moves fill in even more of the picture.

Forget the 'goat-y'....get the criminals and stop the hideous killings and crime...Citizens are very upset and frightened. If City won't own up to it...then media needs to take over..things are not good.

OT: Channel 11 Chicago Tonight did a piece on "a new kind of crime wave, the flash mob". Interesting that the CPD declined to send someone to appear on the panel.

Of course, that self-aggrandizing idiot from Cease Fire was again spouting self-promotion that had nothing to do with the topic at hand and Ald Cochran (a former cop?) erroneously stated that a retail theft arrest would be on the permanent record of a teen for the rest of his life. WTF?

As much as I disagree with McCarthy over his views on guns, I have to give him credit for at least making the effort and getting certified in the State of Illinois as a law enforcement officer, unlike the nitwit before him. I have no problem at all with McCarthy wearing the CPD uniform, now. At least he was the police in NYC. The previous goof had no idea of the meaning of the word police.

Wearing the uniform would be a mistake as it was for Jody Weis.

Think about what O. W. Wilson and Weis were all about and how they are viewed today.

Garry, Don't wear the uniform as as sign of respect for the troops. And do NOT post a photo of J.W. in the lobby of H.Q.

Why does he have to wear our uniform? Is it a big deal? It is to me and a bunch of others. He may have been the police back in NYC, but he did not earn it here. HE DID NOT TAKE CLASSES AT THE ACADEMY. Supposedly he took some firearm classes so he could pass the state test. As SCC said it is the person in the uniform. So, the same can be true of not wearing the uniform. He can be just as effective without it, maybe more so since it will cause dissension among the ranks.

The motivation to wear the uniform and the failure to see the impact upon his image gives insight into the person that is leading our Department. This man is an ego maniac who is about building his image and going home to New York. He will say anything, do anything, to make himself look good. He will throw whoever stands in the way of this goal under the bus and drive over them. Do not trust this person. ***********************************
Having been around for just about all of the O.W. tenure, I am probably at least as much, if not more of a dinosaur than you. First of all, if you remember, the stated purpose of 1 man cars was to put more vehicles on the street to act as a deterent to crime. Second, I know of no statistics that indicate Battery of a PO went up during that time. Third I do not remember working a 1 man car very often on the First or Third Watch at that time, and if I did any time I was given a job that a potential of trouble, I was also given an assist car. Besides if all else failed, I had a gun and billy club. The few 1 man cars that were out there usually just handled paper jobs. I don't know about you, but those were fun times for me, and easily among the best I had in 40 years or so. Just as an aside, O.W. was a beat officer in a small town in California, as well as a Professor at Berkely, as well as being rather high up in the Constabulary in Germany after World War II. I believe he was a Colonel As far as a Policeman's Superintendent goes, I would rate him among what I consider to be the 4 best. Those were: O.W., Jim Rochford, Dick Brzeczek and Fred Rice. O'Grady would be in that company also, but he was mostly in an acting capacity. I did know most of them. Many of you may laugh and joke about Brzeczek, But until he went off of the deep end he was agreat spokesperson for, and supporter of, the street polickman.

Incidentally, in my opinion, it was after Fred Rice, the last Superintendent that had the ego and self conficence necessary to do the jobe correctly, that things started to go down hill. We seemed to get into a period of "Cover your ass," which exists to this day. Another point, all those Supts on my list had the ability and willingness and perhaps the freedom to surround themselves with people who knew what they were doing.

Give this new guy a chance, whether he wears the uniform or not, he seems to be cut from the right cloth.

I'd be willing to bet you'd have the scraggliest face out there along with your ball cap on backwards.

There are reasons for standards. If we say nothing besides a mustache it's real easy. Otherwise it's beard that doesn't grow all the way down to your chest hair, not longer than 3/4 of an inch. Natural colors only, mutton chops, etc, etc, etc.

Hard enough to get any boss to ask to see a bump card now. I know, "whats a bump card"?

That would work....if....you didn't have idiots who decided to keep a beard like father time. Remember hard core bikers are gangbangers. No cop should be allowed to look like a hardcore biker. There is one guy on the job that has a beard about two feet long! Looks like a total asshole! Then again, I heard his brother is a retired Captain and they don't want to mess with him.

to me its not really a problem if he wears the uniform. Unlike J fled this guy was actually a police officer. He at one time was pushin a beat car just like the rest of us. Like him or not and weather you support him or not youve got to at least give him that. I think its fine if he wears our uniform. There is alot of hate for this guy already(im convinced mostly from disgruntled TRU and MSF) but I dont think hes all that bad. I could really care less what type of sh*t he got into in new york or new jersey off duty... Lets not cast stones boys and girls.. Myself along with many people I know about have stepped on thier d*ck off duty and gotten jammed up. 10 years ago I was in a pretty bad way off duty and spent some time in the rubber gun unit.. the way I look at it, boys will be boys. Thank god i can look back at it and thank my lucky stars I was able to keep my job and end up back on the job... even though I had to take 30 days It all worked out. So im still givin this guy a chance.

You are a f*cking moron. You should not be on this job. "Boys will be boys" is an excuse for bad behavior. I've got 25 years on and totally disagree with your 'shit happens' attitude.

Whoever you are, you're a disgrace!
F*ck you, you're lucky to have held onto your job! You should be a cashier at Speedway!

Sounds like you got some anger problems just retire already. wow that was some rant take some deep breaths its going to be ok.

He can be just as effective without it, maybe more so since it will cause dissension among the ranks.

why does this even MATTER?
So since he isnt a "real" chicago cop in your eyes, you wont respect him? Thats weak as hell Brother.
He is making an effort.More so that the goof before him.

Remember this:
Weis's uniform was given to him
McCarthy's was EARNED.

Big difference. But by all means keep being a traditionalist and hang on to the antiquated idea that if he cant be a PPO he cant possibly be the police. There are cops on this job on for 15 years that STILL arent the police.
There are cops on this job that should have their uniform taken from them.
As I see it,if he is willing to certify, then that makes him the police. That entitles him to the uniform and the respect it demands.

OLD SCHOOL.
