No Auto Theft Unit

What index crime keeps climbing in Chicago, and has been ever since they disbanded the Auto Theft Unit?
  • Auto Theft!
And what happens when the San Jose PD disbands their vice unit?
  • San Jose budget cuts aren’t hurting all businesses, and in fact, one group in particular seems to be cashing in on the city’s economic woes: prostitutes.

Prostitution has made a rapid comeback to San Jose street corners in the past few weeks, according to NBC Bay Area sources.

  • Two police sources told NBC Bay Area that prostitutes have even been traveling from as far as Oakland and Fresno to take advantage of San Jose’s less scrutinized street corners.
It's almost as if criminals know where there are no consequences or enforcement. Kind of like the Patrol Division under the reign of J-Fled that is only now being addressed.

Seriously. Can someone PLEASE tell me why they disbanded AT again?

"There were dogs in AT" is not an adequate answer. You don't do away with an entire investigative unit that specializes in a pretty significant crime type because of some dogs. You restaff, reorient, redraw but you don't disband because of that.

Illogical decision.

It's brutal when your perfectly running 1995 Buick Sedan- that's been dutifully saving you from a car payment every year- gets ripped off and you only wind up with a $1500 check from the insurance company to 'replace' it.

Car theft is one of the more obnoxious crime types. No, it isn't murder, but losing a car can be a huge drag on life to good people who don't make a lot of money.

Bring back the auto theft unit.

Not only no A/T unit, but the state agencies like NEMAT have been stripped to the bone.

I have tried to get the SOS police to conduct some license checks of auto body shops with me and can't even get anyone to return my numerous calls!

How dare anyone try to criticize auto theft detectives. Of all Part I index crime arrest incidents, show me another unit that can come up with THREE separate, unrelated "on view" arrest incidents in one tour of duty (including overtime).

It happened among Area 4 Auto Theft detectives: three recovered steals with occupants in one tour of duty.

Top that, hard chargers.

Part I property crimes including motor vehicle theft comprise nearly eighty (80) percent of Chicago's crime index. Compare this with criminal homicide which is well less than one percent of all index crime.

Yet, in calculating Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR), a single murder is weighted the same as one auto theft.

A high volume of vehicle theft can raise index crime statistics off the chart.

An effective police agency can NOT give auto theft short shrift.

the city could care less about auto thefts--- here's the report number and now call your insurance agent up and make a claim---- the city doesn't make any money on auto thefts unless the auto gets towed into the pound--- the insurance companies know this and that is why all chicago zip codes are red lined and you pay double what everyone else outside the city pays....

Guess that's why everybody wants to be an Alderman. None of them can be investigated for their criminal activity, outside of the Federal Department of Justice.

It allows all these pond scum politicians to manipulate the system and conduct their white collar crimes without interference from those pesky law enforcement people. Little wonder that the Chicago office of the DOJ is, by far, the largest investigative office in the nation!

Remember, when the criminal does not fear being caught, they will criminalize the public like a voracious school of piranha on a defenseless cow in the Amazon River!

Chomp! Chomp! Chomp!

It's a very complicated and multifaceted story, which occurred over a long period of time.
CLIFF NOTES VERSION:
After Greylord cleaned up a lot of the 26th St. whorehousing, "The Boys" had a harder time fixing cases. Their "Gold Braid" allies in CPD put pressure on to diminish the capability of the Auto Theft Unit as an investigative unit. It was slowly turned into a "paper unit", rather than an enforcement unit. Concurrently, it was flooded with
newly promoted Detectives who didn't want to be there and had no interest in A/T. The older, highly qualified, knowledgeable Dets. saw
the unit going downhill & retired
ASAP, leaving only a small nucleus of able & capable A/T dicks, who hung on as long as they could.
Finally, when these few began taking
re-tagged trucks away a fleet at a time from a certain ethnic 11th Ward famlly, the decision was made to emininate the unit. This decision was already a done deal when Ivanjack was still Chief of dicks. Cline wore the jacket for this decision, in which he had no actual part. Also greatly at fault in AT's demise was the Felony Review Unit, which did not regard A/T as a crime. Felony Review is and has been, for going on 40yrs, the best friend that a Cook Co. thief has had. If I was a pro thief,
I would fly them all to Hawaii every year for their X-mas parties.

Daley got rid of the Auto Theft Unit because his friends in the outfit wanted him to. Plain and simple, that snake mother fucker has helped more criminals during his tenure as mayor, as have the CC public defenders.

Auto theft is a HUGE business that organized crime wanted left relatively untouched. That's why Daley put his hand into eliminating the capability of the department to address it.

And he gets free cars and police valets.

An effective auto theft unit could save the car owning public tens of millions of dollars in insurance premiums every year.

Tax money well spent.

My suggestion is bait cars outfitted with a remote control explosive device. Once the cars get to the chop shop detonate the device. Voila. No chop shop.

Sure, there may be one or two minor issues regarding the constitutionality of such a program, but I have a solution.

We call it auto refractive retroactive abortion. ARRA. There is always a loophole in abortion law.

One day the department will realize what a genius I am and I too shall receive multiple merit promotions and then a district command.
