"No specific threats" say the feebs, but then why make specific warnings?
- The FBI and Homeland Security have issued a nationwide warning about al-Qaida threats to small airplanes, just days before the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.
Authorities say there is no specific or credible terrorist threat for the 10-year anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. But they have stepped up national security a precaution.
According to a five-page law enforcement bulletin issued Friday, as recently as early this year, al-Qaida was considering ways to attack airplanes.
The alert, issued ahead of the summer's last busy travel weekend, said terrorists have considered renting private planes and loading them with explosives.
Sure, but to rent a plane and load it with an IED, you need to get a truck on the airfield, right? You can't just rent a plane and drive it to an abandoned warehouse to fill it up with fertilizer. Once again, misdirection - what aren't we being told?

SCC, is it not possible to rent a plane, fly it to a remote location, land it and then pack it full of explosives? If we're talking small 2-4 passenger prop planes, they could be flown to rural areas, landed on minimally travelled roads and/or farmlands and loaded up. Very possible.
I've said it before and I'll asy it again.......

not really scc. There are many people who own private planes and land and take off on their own property. Obviously not in chicago but in the rural areas many people who have cessnas or other small craft commonly take off by a home made airstrip. Who is to say that they didnt buy 50 or 60 acres of land 100 miles or so from major cities and purchased a few used cessnas.... plenty of space to take off and land and plenty of space in a barn to work on explosives or anything else they could be working on. to fly a small craft like that you dont have to take off and land at a major airport. once your up in the air you notify the local airspace that your in and you operate under 10000 feet calling your own shots until the controller tells you where to go... this is a very plausible plan./

We have an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in this country -- they're already here -- we don't know who or where they are or what they are up to because to find that out and hold them accountable we call that profiling.

Well there are thousands of small airstrips many without control towers across the country.
However the shorter the runway the smaller the plane they can support.
A typical two seat trainer has a useful load of about 500 pounds and factor in the weight of the pilot and subtract from that to figure what they can bring along.
If you want to push your luck beyond designed load limits there have been stories in the past where the weight limit was exceeded by 500 pounds...so whatever..still a far cry from the weight and fuel carried on a jet.
On the other hand we could be talking small plan as in business jets and some of those borrow designs from military craft.

Was an armed robbery of 4,000 kilos of high explosive in Canada right across from the border last week.
Could land the plane at any remote location to load it or simply use the plane to collide with a jumbo jet that is landing or taking off.

Planes? How about taxi cabs? There are more registered cabs in Chicago than police officers. If you can convince just 1% (a modest number), of all cabbies in Chicago to pack their cabs with explosives and go to designated areas-of which they have total access-you'd have an arsenal of roughly 140 guided bombs. Now that would make an impact on our city...literally.

There are little airports and fly in communities all over the area. Some of the communities have hangars attached to the homes just like a garage. The fields are not fenced in. There is no air traffic control at the field. Air traffic control is done on UNICOM which provides little or no direction to the pilots. It is up to the pilots to fly at or below 2,000 feet in class B airspace and call out to other craft when approaching to land or when taking off. Several pilots who own their own planes also rent hangars at fields like Clow in DuPage, Lewis in Will County or Schaumburg in western Cook County to name just a few. Pilots drive their pickups to their hangars all the time at those small fields. If someone bought an airplane and rented a hangar and prepared over a period of time, it would not be difficult to stage an attack.
Many police officers are pilots, including this retired cop and we fly for pleasure, just as a lot of coppers love to ride motorcycles. This is more media worthless scare hype, to justify more taxes for a new agency, just like the usual stories about 'out of control cops'.
What I want to know is, what are the Feds doing about the threat of tactical nuclear weapons in the trunks of automobiles? CLEARLY something needs to be done about this gaping hole in transportation security. We need TSA inspections in every driveway and parking lot.
Arrest everyone in a U-haul. They have actually been used in more terrorist plots than GA planes.

On a related note, I would like to issue a warning that any mini-van or SUV with a stick-figure family on the back window could be a terrorist threat. I have no credible or specific information however.
Next Sun you will have football stadiums full of 80,000 Americans. You will have television audiences of millions watching these games and the airspace above the stadiums will have no protection. If these wackos wanted to do something spectacular and bring the horror live into our living rooms this would be it. 2 or 3 small planes loaded with explosives hitting an outdoor football stadium sounds crazy but would be relatively easy to accomplish.

Some airports in rural areas have unmanned towers. As a close as DuPage County there are subdivisions which have a private airfield and planes are stored in hangars attached to homes.

A small plane attack scenerio is entirely possible and feasible. I attended the IRTB training in New Mexico and this was one of the subjects covered. 600 pounds of explosives could be placed into a single prop airplane and then flown into a building like the Tower or Hancock. The resulting explosion probably would not topple the building, but it would kill hundreds. Anyone in the building on the floor struck would be killed, and probably anyone on the floor above and below. Next, anyone on the street below would have fiery debris and fragmentation from the VBIED. We witnessed the detonation of a 300lbs IED from over 3/4 of a mile away, from a hardened bunker, and we could still feel the shock wave. The only discernible piece of the car was its engine block and that was in pieces. A small plane VBIED would be devastating, not only to people but to the economy of the city as well. If you work in or around Midway or O'Hare, or you are a suburban copper who reads this blog and works near a rural airstrip, you need to be vigilant. While this scenario may seem outlandish and "Hollywood Movie" type stuff, who would have ever believed someone could hijack a 737 and crash it into a skyscraper in NYC, much less four times over. The day you underestimate your enemy is the day you lose the battle and, quite possibly, the war.

As a retired PO, and also a retired, experienced Flight Instructor (10,000) hours, I will tell you that it is entirely feasible and possible to use a small plane in a terrorist attack. An airplane in the 4 place single engine class has a gross weight from 2800 to 3600 pounds with nearly half of that being the weight of the aircraft itselr, that means it can carry 1400 pounds of fuel, pilot and cargo. They can be easily overloaded up to about 20 percent of max gross, and that is routinely allowed by the FAA for ferry flights to Europe for extra fuel.
I have no idea just how much damage 700 to 1000 pounds of dynamite or tnt or any other explosive can do, but I can tell you that carrying it in a small single is easily done. A light twin can carry even more, and contrary to what one poster said, there is generally no requirement to contact anyone over large parts of this area. Over most of the country, with the exception of the busier terminals, flights up to 18,500 feet can be conducted with no contact with anyone. It would also be fairly easy, especially at night to load such a craft. Light, single, 4 place aircraft are available for anywhere from approx 20,000 to upwards of 100,000 dollars, depending on age and equipment.
Dropped off family at midway and being a former Navy intelligence officer noticed at the airport newly installed security gates at all entrances and when I dropped off noticed all the new cameras installed outside along with large speakers everywhere wonder if that is another sign??

Canada: Armed Robbery – Theft of Explosives
On 27 August 2011 at approximately 0615 hours a theft of explosives occurred in Ste-Sophie (Quebec) which is located approximately 75 miles north of the US border. 5 males armed with weapons stole 2 to 3 thousand kilos of high explosives. The males fled in two separate vans, 1 reported to be blue/grey in color and the other white in color. At this time there is no indication that the explosives are headed to the United States nor is terrorist activity suspected. Source: New York State Intelligence Center.

Just a short drive to Frankfort Airport which is UNATTENDED: DuPage Airport has a control tower, but you can take off and land WITHOUT a flight plan…in fact, you can take off and land at ANY AIRPORT except O’Hare with a flight plan. As far as a 2 seat trainer???PUH-LEASE!!!

Hell, I could land a CARAVAN in 350’
Then toss in the ability to have an AUTPILOT fly a ROUTE and DESCENT PROFILE, and the TERRORIST could even parachute OUT of the damn plane and live to do it again.

At small airports, pilots keep their eyes open, but aren’t TRAINED PROFESSIONALS to determine what components could be used to make a bomb or even chemical dispersant…assuming the bad guys are dumb enough to NOT rent a hangar and drive their vehicle / truck right in and unload their weapons.

As an added thought: I hope I did not give the impression that overloading an aircraft is proper to do. It is NOT. I say this so that no young or inexperienced pilot our there will get that impression. Getting outside of the gross weight/center of gravity envelope is dangerous and when you do it you become a test pilot. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.

Realistically, just what training would give you any real chance with your handgun or even a carbine against a well armed, equipped, and trained paramilitary group of terrorists who are holed up in a fairly secure building. Especially one who does not care if he comes out alive.
It would be very easy to booby trap a typical school in a few minutes to make any entry very costly, even to well trained persons.
Think a squad sized group trained to the standards of an average US army recruit who recently got out of AIT. Not a very difficult standard to train to.
I am not sure you could dislodge them with anything less than a platoon sized operation with what weapons are available to CPD. And that might be exactly what they wanted. To kill ten or twenty cops and then blow up a school full of kids as their last hurrah.
It is a very scary thought.
This is one of those "we're covering our ass before the anniversary of 9/11" warnings.
Because if something goes down, they can say they were aware and did everything in their power to stop it.
And if nothing happens, the implication is that they halted it in its tracks.
Either way, a win-win for the FBI and Homeland Security.

Aviation on all levels presents no greater risk than any other form of transportation and is less accessible to the public than most other modes of transit. Security threats should be viewed in their entirety, not simply through one method that may be used, unless a specific threat is discovered.
