Charges have been brought against four juveniles who police say mugged an IIT grad student Wednesday night near the 31st Street Beach as he rode his bicycle home from school on the lakefront path.
Dave Coxhead, 37, said he was riding home to Hyde Park from the Illinois Institute of Technology campus at about 9:30 p.m. when "a group of about seven kids" crossed over the path in front of his bicycle, forcing him to slow down.
"One of them took a rifle and swung it at me and hit me above the eye," Coxhead said in an interview. Knocked off his bike, Coxhead lay on the ground as the youths kicked him.
According to the report we saw, the one wielding the wooden toy rifle was all of ten-years-old. Ten. And he thinks nothing of taking what is essentially a two-by-four and busting it over the skull of a complete stranger to take his stuff around 0930 PM.
Any bets on how soon this little asshole is the next Fenger assailant? Oh wait, he's already there. Will someone please kill two or three of these jagoffs and maybe, just maybe, put a stop to this shit?

Another one tonight. Ot, man gets 12 yrs for killing a street artist in fight from a couple of years ago meanwhile Vaneko still walks free.

Popping two or three wilding animals will only solve the incident that results in their demise, which is a win-win in itself, but do not expect their peers to take heed. I work in 021, we have been complaining about the lighting in that area for 3 years...nothing changed! Pull up the stats, there have been atleast 10 robberies & assaults in the area fron 31st -39th and LSD in the last year. The ruffnecks from 39th & 35th lake park cross over the bridges and terrorize daily, just ask beat 2123 & 2122 or 2105 they will tell you. We had a homicide there earlier this year near 39th LSD.
As long as you have 'no CCW' you will see this escalate.

Anyone riding a bike on the lakefront, ANY stretch of it, should be prepared for sudden, unprovoked violence.
Pepper spray, small handgun, brass knuckles, whatever's necessary. Even your U lock is a formidable weapon to defend yourself and your property, and I've used it in the past. You should also be pedaling at enough speed that your wannabe attackers would have to really hustle to catch up to you. And of course, riding a bike while using an Ipod or talking on your cell is just plain dumb & suicidal. If you're not alert and sober you have no business out & about on a bike.

Why not make an example of them? Attempted murder, aggravated assault and battery, hate crime, being out after curfew, assault with a deadly weapon, mob action.

Last night I was going N/B on Lake Shore Drive around 630pm and about a dozen male black teen agers ranging from 14 to 18 were jumping over the fence at Oak Street Beach, walking in and out of traffic stopping cars and waving their hands in the air, as if challenging the cars in the road.
The tv news refers to these little low life animals as "kids". That is wrong. Kids are the little guys playing in the park. Playing on our street with your kids. Kids are the ones going to school every day to learn and be respectful to those around them. All of these little worthless monsters should be put in cages and used for experiments. Only 10 to 15 years old and already ruthless little Thugs. The victim in this brutal assault could easily be dead or brain damaged. What makes these "kids" think they can just attack anyone at will. And of course isn't this a racist attack? What if the victim was a Black man attacked by White "kids"? Mary Sun Times would have a stroke. Rev. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have to take a break from washing and ironing all their money. Welcome to Chicago.

Someone please follow this case and others like it at Juvenile Court - you know the court where Bernadine Dohrn (Bill Ayres wife) has held sway and promoted a "no punishment" approach for the last ten years. Could we be reaping what has been sowed there?

I was at IIT 1975 to 1980; I can't think of a single IIT student who rode his bike off-campus towards Lake who wasn't returned home by CPD squad car after being "mugged while riding". Easily must have been at least two dozen guys.
Add to that list the number of IIT students who were mugged on El at nights.

My answer was an overwhelmingly, YES! I would have strangled those kids to death. Obviously he was caught off gaurd and pretty seriously injured, but did he have the right to put his hands on those little fucks?

The savages strategy is to create a reason for you to slow down and thus making you a target and easier to take down. The real heroes are the locals that came to the mans aide after he was assaulted.

So far no new bridges and no useless cameras, lakefront path is nice and dark. Kids used to throw rocks into passing cars, i guess that stunt didn't give them enough rush so off to the next best thing - group robbery.
Since wells shithole got leveled down, all the rats got relocated to section 8 at 35 and 39 lake park. Kids need entertainment so lake front is a good place to go.
I was nearly mobbed by a bunch of these "youths" walking from the Howard St. Red Line to Greenview in Rogers Park. The cops came but the thugs had dispersed by then. I am so sick of these black thugs attacking law abiding citizens.
Thursday night I nearly fell out of my chair when the victim said he feels sorry for these little jagoffs, they're off to a bad start in life!!
I told the wife that it's too bad the victim didn't have a 357 in a fanny pack. Then there could be a happy ending, with a few less thugs now and in the future. When you consider that in a couple years these things would be knocking up their female classmates, a gun could prevent a generation and a half of thugs!

I worked at the 39th and Lake park building and had the distinct pleasure of locking up a highly resistive Antonio Fort.(grandchild of Jeff Fort) That neighborhood has been ignored for a long time.Perhaps stronger ENFORCEMENT?
U of C rolled thru a few times much to the dismay of Former Commander Lodding who only placated complaints. Go up north to beat 1913(H) and look at those CHA buildngs at night. Lit up like a prison yard. Which is how it should be. Put in CAPS requests. Send copy to S and S,keep copy for yourself. It will take a while but it will get done.

If anyone expects any real justice in juvinile court don't hold your breath. All of us have sat in this court and seen justice wither away with all the bleeding hearts deciding these cases. All these little criminals will walk and will eventually kill some one or hopefully get killed themselves.

Consider this one of the rare instances where turning a pedestrian into a road taco is considered a freebie. No one can claim you were negligent for hitting someone vaulting onto lakeshore drive.

Maybe former scumbag, er, mayor Daley has some pull and get a bunch of "blue light" cameras over there. We know how much those cameras really identify the offenders, right dics? (sarcasm off)
RE the "youths" that the media fails to identify their race: they are like cockroaches. always breeding, hard to kill, and when you do kill a few, 100 more take their place.
years ago I remember my FTO give me this advise: beware of westside buildings, esp. during those "domestic calls" that you responded to (at least 15 during a midnight watch). never stand near the curtains or walls, never sit down on a chair.. unless you want to take the creepy crawlers home with you.

You always have the right to defend yourself within reason. If a 10yr old swung a weapon at me I would put him on his ass and do it hard enough to make sure he stayed on his ass. Now, could you continue to stomp on his head after the threat had been eliminated...only if you're good with words and there aren't any witnesses around. I get asked this question all of the time from robbery victims. They all want to know if they would have gotten in trouble for defending themselves or their property. Of course you can. The real question is do you trust a Cook County jury to do the right thing when momma sues you for attacking her poor, innocent little baby for no reason.

That's the Hyde Park mentality. THey cross the street then look back to see if cars were coming. They were the worst victims, never wanted to prosecute and were always worried about the offender, regardless of how bad they were beat.
