6 PM on Channel 5

Channel 5 is doing a story about the tremendous jump in homicide numbers for January. We'll provide a link when they get it up on the website.

Now if they'd just tie it into the numbers game know as CompStat.

Some basic investigative reporting might reveal a number of shady accounting of crime and the accompanying statistics.

UPDATE: Link is here.

Article in the Wall Street Journal over the weekend. I don't have the link, so I'll do the short version:

The tremendous drop in crime in NY was attributed not only to COMPSTAT, but to a huge increase in HIRINGS. They may have cooked the books to some degree, but they are talking about an 80% decrease in homicides, shootings and burglaries.

This drop is attributed to having coppers EVERYWHERE to prevent the crimes from happening. Just because the mope couldn't rob a guy today didn't mean he would automatically rob a guy tomorrow. Often the crime just didn't occur. Now we have not only less crime, but less offenders we have to pay to house. They claim a net savings of 2 billion for not having to house them! I haven't done the article justice, read it and see if you don't agree.

Holding the Commanders accountable helps expose the underperformers, but the big thing we are missing here is the bodies to prevent the crimes. With a 2 billion dollar savings, you can hire, put more money back into the economy, fund the pension AND the taxpayers are safer. More with less isn't cutting it.

Well, well, what's happening here?

Three Chicago companies give back $34 million in tax breaks

You know damn well these corporations are not going to give back money out of the goodness of their own hearts right?

Is the heat on...how's that MF Global banking operation with ties to the CME group going where millions of dollars went missing.. or are the taxpayers being set-up for an even bigger tax break deal shortly down the road?

Maybe you come out better not using TIF money for building improvements right before an apocalypse eh?

I would imagine it depends on your insurance coverage though.

Nevertheless, even if we take our conspiracy theorist hat off for the moment it's a mess. The tax breaks to save jobs is bullshit.

Illinois political apparatus was bragging again the other day about 1,600 new jobs being created in Belvidere Chrysler plant.

Heh but check it out... because they left out the part about the jobs being temporary part-time jobs to get around the unions

Meanwhile hidden off the front pages of Chicago's MSM 700 Layoffs planed for Abbot labs. Caterpillar blows away earnings expectations up 58% which one would expect to be good news for Illinoisans. But guess what? Cat also is wrapping up a deal to outsource some manufacturing to Wis. 300 NEW JOBS IN WISCONSIN!

Oh and guess what kind of jobs? Welding..the very industry that Ralm was promoting that prior college graduates should go back to school and be retrained to do.

All the core problems are still there. Nothing has changed. Goodbye jobs -- goodbye tax revenue -- goodbye standard of living.

Toward the late 80's, we got sophisticated and started using computers. The review officer used the computer to draw the map.....then put the push pins in it.

Took him another couple of years to figure out how to have the computer draw the crime dots.

Crime stats have ALWAYS been a suspect set of figures.

Crime stats are based on crime reported to the police. In some crimes, most are not reported to the police.

The estimates of real vs. reported crimes are interesting. About the only two crimes stats that are somewhat reliable are murders (dead bodies tend to get noticed) and vehicle theft (people generally want their cars back.)

Everything else is questionable. Especially in Chicago, where our numbers are said to be so cooked the FBI doesn't include Chicago crime stats in its national tabulation.

It differs in that you actually cared about what you were doing and it wasn't just about a paycheck.

It differs because what you did cost less - far less - than having several clouted wunderkind do it.

It differs because no computers were required and there was less possibility of cooking the books.
