Another Black Eye

  • A former veteran Chicago police officer whom prosecutors alleged had joined ranks with one of his top street informants to kidnap and rob drug dealers was convicted today in federal court of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

The jury failed to reach a decision on a racketeering count against Glenn Lewellen, 55, who worked as a Chicago cop from 1986 to 2002.

Off the job for almost ten years, but still going to paint everyone with the corruption brush.

Sorry SCC but this one is the CPD brush. especially when "prosecutors alleged had joined ranks with one of his top street informants." This had started because of his employment, not just a retired Guy going bad.

At least it's over now. We'll hear about the sentencing and after that no more news. The bottom line is this guy was a big jerk and needed to go to jail. Thank God he was a loner and no other police officers were involved. Good ridance.

Don't feel sorry for this big asshole.

Lewellen was pegged as a goof from the day he entered the police academy. He brought pictures of himself dressed in knights armor and atop a horse he rented to propose to his wife. Pathetic.

Former police officer. So a lot of this falls back on bad reporting. How long ago did he become 'former'?

If it was recently then yes, today's police get tarred. If it was a decade ago then those officers get tarred. Sorry excuse for journalism, not yours SCC.

I don't think it's that bad... Someone could be retired for ten years and the media will always say, a former Chicago cop. So no black eye here just another slow news day. How about the media reporting something positive for a change... I know I'm only dreaming, it doesn't help their ratings.

I'm with commenter Anonymous #2. This guy's crimes were related to what he was doing when he was on the job. Not just some random stuff done by a long-retired guy. A parallel: if a convicted felon is out and living straight for ten years but then commits a heinous crime and gets convicted, he'll always be identified as an ex-con, even if the first conviction had nothing to do with the second crime.

here is a black eye....
o/t
- Wow, how does a sgt. get detailed to the Corp Counsel for three weeks because of lawsuits and gets assigned to work 2nd shift (as the orders state will happen with any member assigned to a specific trial in excess of three days) but this full of bologna silver spoons star returns to his area on third shift to be the acting lt of hgs.

There are already four sgts working, so many that they run into each other while calling secret meetings. They even have another "real lt" from another det area who is present during the third shift.

Does neither know what to do so two idiots are better than one, or does the sgt ricky schroder look-a-like get all of this overtime because it's his way of raping the system....gotta pay for that new car somehow huhhhhh.....gee wasn't he one of the subject of the suit to begin with....and now he gets completely unnecessary overtime on top of it.

Nice going call people incompetent and lazy, and you are what? Not to lazy to fill out unnecessary o/t slips though are u. We all know your not needed it's just because you can?

Wow- isn't another sgt on trial for the same thing?

Prosecutors Oppose Special Prosecutor In Case Involving Daley Nephew

The Cook County state's attorney's office has told a judge it opposes appointing a special prosecutor to look into the investigation of the death of a young man killed in a drunken confrontation involving a nephew of former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley nearly eight years ago.

I knew Glenn when he came in the job and came to 009. He wasn't a bad guy, and was very productive as he wanted to get on tact, get to narcotics, etc.
The evidence is pretty overwhelming. I initially didn't want to believe it, but if it looks like a duck and it walks like a duck, it's a f'in duck!!
Thanks for the black eye.

Like someone here said, when you take the money you're putting yourself and your whole family and your future on a hangman's scaffold with some criminal only too ready to pull the handle and drop you, to cut a deal for himself with the prosecution.

Don't do it.

I'm not surprised about the reference. You were told on the first day of the academy, from here on out you will be referred to as a police officer or former police officer;no matter how much time has elapsed since you left the job.

I can read this post differently.

What you just said is, Glenn did what he had to do, getting along with people, making the arrests he needed to make and getting the attention he needed to get, all to engineer getting himself an assignment in Narcotics.

Makes sense now, doesn't it?

Easy there, I was a class of '86 guy! Just as you don't like being painted with the same brush when a P.O. screws up, don't paint all '86 Officers with the same brush! 1986 and into 1987 was probably the largest hiring rush we've ever seen.

00000000000000000
I think the point of the original post was that sgt. ricky shroder is being carried on the 2nd watch and reporting to corp counsel office every day. But he is coming in to the area on 3rd watch as an acting lt of HGS and putting in overtime slips for 8 hours (lots o money). Meanwhile - there is already a 3rd watch lt on duty of RBT, as well as four other sgts of HGS on duty during 3rd watch.

Bottom line is Sgt. silver spoons should be going home after 2nd watch at corp counsel, and one of the other HGS 3rd watch sgts could be acting lt of HGS.

I get the resentment because the baby face sgt is quite arrogant and condescending and always screaming at the dics about unnecessary overtime. Wheres the area commander on this one??

There was a touching moment in court, when Glenn's attorneys, family, and freinds all wore blue and black to shhow their support for the big guy.
Only one little problem. These are the gang colors for the City Knights street gang, of which all 5 of Glenn's codefendants are members.
Now that's coordination!
