- Second Watch is going to be the downtown force. First and Third watches will be covering the districts.
This has popped up in a few comment sections over the past few days.

think there will be alot of people hittin the medical come g8 time.
Tier one officers will be on the front lines.. so far there are 2450 tier one officers trained. Tier one officers will be working mandatory 12hr days with days off cancelled. Predictions are that the 12hour day will turn into 16 hour days. The city(feds) are already supplying and purchased about 1300 cots to provide officers who may not be able to go home and sleep. These locations are still under consideration but UIC forum and the academy look like winners so far because they both have the space and bathroom/shower facilities that can be used. The other supporting officers who participated in the one day training and are tier 2 officers will be sent to be on the outskirts of the protest. They will be guarding cars, processing on site arrests, searching, inventory property, close streets and do loop traffic control. And yes, that will be 2nd watch officers. In the districts it will be two watches also, 1st and 3rd watch working 12 hour days. early cars will be 10pm to 10am and late cars will be 11pm to 11am for midnights. third watch will work 10am to 10pm for early cars and 11am to 11pm for late cars. The 2nd watch officers are going to be bussed down by cta busses every morning at 7am and will be working till 7pm. Its going to be a long ten days for the guys with days off cancelled. Also, its very possible that this whole thing wont be starting on may 13th like everyone things. An international occupy group is attempting to assemble 50,000 occupiers to grant park on May Day, or may 1st. They plan to stay the entire month of may... then the real protesters will get here may 13th.. If there are 50,000 protesters showing up unannounced may 1st its going to be a cluster...you could see some officers not get days off for the entire month.. and they city can do it no matter what the contract says because its an "emergency".. look for 5a furloughs to be cancelled if this happens on may 1st too. hopefully not though.
by the way, the reason 2nd watch was picked to go downtown is because of starting times. Most of the "action" is going to happen between 8am and 6 or 7pm... 1st watch and 3rd watch start times would be too drastic to move so 2nd watch fits perfect to cover the times when the protests will be at the peak. so if your gonna "hurt your foot" and you work 2nd watch, maybe wait until late april early may.. just a thought
I heard a certain outspoken Lieutenant did a little research, and by FEMAs own guidelines for crowd control under circumstances identical to what's coming with G8/NATO, WE ARE TOTALLY FUCKED. S/he also forwarded these findings to every other patrol Lieutenant if anyone would like/has the balls to forward the email to SCC.
While investigating this, it was also discovered that the department has set up an email address for anyone that has questions about any and all things G8 and NATO. First anyone has heard of it, but a quick check revealed it exists and is legit. Let's see how long before the assholes at HQ have is shut down.
With the 2nd watch being the front line in the struggle with the aggresive protesters expect more injuries to the older officers that are on that watch. I believe the city expects the older officers will be more tolerant of the peacefull demonstrators. But when push comes to shove with the aggressive confrontational ones those officers will react the same as the officers did in 1968 and the battle will be on.

I was at the traing last week. We were told by instructors that this was last days of the g8 training because they needed to prepare a new 2 day training course for 2nd watch, because they were going to be deployed with tier 1 officers for protest.

District and Area Closings Update
The Lodge has been notified that the 019 & 021 District closings will be effective on Sunday, March 4, 2012.
Officers working the 3rd watch on Saturday, March 3, 2012 will report to their current District of Assignment for roll call to pick up their car and radio. These Officers will check off in the 023rd District or 002nd District. Transport vans will be available to assist these Officers in picking up their personal vehicles.
Officers working the 1st watch on Saturday night for March 4, 2012 will report to their current District of Assignment for roll call to pick up their car and radio. These Officers will check off in the 023rd District or 002nd District. Transport vans will be available to assist these Officers in picking up their personal vehicles.
Officers working the 2nd watch on Sunday, March 4, 2012 will report to their new unit of assignment.
Unit designators will be distributed to those members assigned to a new unit. Officers assigned to the new 019th Town Hall District will receive key cards for access to the building prior to the change.
The 021st District Station will be locked at 0800 hours on Sunday, March 4, 2012. Any locker that is not vacated will have the lock cut off, the contents removed, and those contents inventoried. Officers should make every attempt to notify a member who is on furlough, extended medical, etc.
The Department intends on making the Area changes effective Sunday, March 4, 2012, but has not released any details on the moves. The Department is working with other City services to repair the parking lot at Area 1. Signage will be in place on Wentworth Avenue to designate additional parking spaces. The heliport at Area 1 will be converted to additional parking spaces.

Two things should be clarified. First, rumor is that the ninja suited Cops will be sans sidearm (and for sure Carbine!!??) Second, the department should clarify the whole shooting into the crowd thing because that's probably what happens when we get laced with urine, fecal matter, glass shards, d batteries to the knee etc.

I'm in the D-unit, and have not heard a word about training. Add to that the mass confusion to come when areas are consolidated, which is supposed to happend the first week of March. Nobody seems to know for sure. What a cluster* this is going to be.
What's going to happen to officers on the front line who are injured? Will ambulances be readily available? There are so many logistical considerations, and nobody seems to know anything....it's almost like they're keeping it a secret from us---naw, that's not possible, right?
This is just another example of the upper echelon trying to force out the ol' timers. Make no mistake, the personification of the whole idea behind is quite grizzly at best. Got a call from two old timers yesterday who said they are putting their papers in on April 30th. It definitely is the way to more retirements.
its not just about retirements its about getting the oldest guys with the most to lose. they figure if you have a bunch of 20-30yr guys they may keep their cool longer because of experience. Also a lot of them will be closer to retirement and wont want to jepardize their pensions.

If more people retire i can get a better furlough next year, a chance for second watch, and a chance to work some of those CHA and overtime initiatives that the old-timers always get.
Sorry to say that very few of the veterans i've seen in the districts are understandably burned out and do very little, but they sure do make it harder for the younger officers to get CHA or second watch. And this contributes to the early burnout of younger officers who are starting out with their own families and overvalued mortgages.
Remember, if the police do well at the G8, Rahm will take the credit. If the police do badly, the police will be at fault because the department gave us "training." It's a no-win for the police, a win-win for the new monarch of chicagostan.

Apparently this email address was set up to allow us a place to get answers. Funny thing is I never heard that any email was available and none of the guys I've asked have heard about this either. The older more senior officers are making a higher salary. They are costing the city more money. Plus overall city hall wants to see the number of officers decreased.
If the city officially goes along with this, then it would be one more indication that the city wants to make the job so difficult on senior officers that they will just quit/retire.

I was at one of the uniform stores today. Behind the counter was a stack of uniforms, equipment and Kevlar helmets. Is the department having people but these helmets? Shouldn't that be provided by the department?

Even the Englewood district with the reverends were complaining that a white police captain couldn't or shouldn't be in charge over a primarily black neighborhood...so I ask you who it pushing for the racial segregation that is called "apartheid"?

I have to call fiction on this one!!!! Even our present group of low aptitude bosses knows better than to put “old Timers” in that situation. Back in the day coppers would “do the right thing” in order to preserve life and property. But the “old timers” knew that bosses at that time would at least attempt to have their back in an unfortunate situation. These new bosses could care less about the blue shirts and will continue to stand on your backs in order to continue or exceed their unwarranted ranks. The bosses have continued to show their lack of abilities and to stand up for us. Knowing this the old timers will just stand there watching the protesters destroy the city knowing that the city and the bosses will do nothing in order to keep their family and livelihood safe from possible arrest or lawsuits.

Years ago I would have referred to this do nothing thinking and rational as being a “DOG” and I despised these lazy people. Im not sure if any of you took the questionnaire but students at UIC took a poll of Police officers in Chicago about the right to bear arms and concealed carry. 1900 officers from CPD were polled(me being one of them) and 98.84 percent of the officers were for concealed carry in the state of Illinois.. hmmm, thats a pretty large number. Got to love Illinois, one of the last states not to have concealed carry. This state makes this whole country look stupid.
If this is true and they plan to send 2nd Watch officers, then there is NO DOUBT that Rahm has an ulterior motive with this whole G8/Nato mess. How to solve g8. Make all police officers sworn to be secret service or made diplomats, creating immunity from lawsuits. Second, every protestor arrested or documented on scene should be sued federally by a created "citizens of Chicago" group for wasting resources, rising crime, hurting business. But this is nothing to smile about, officers have the potential of being seriously injured if shit hits the fan. Really? Stuck? Not hardly. A lot of us are married to people with better medical insurance than ours. Some of us don't care and will pay the price for coverage for a couple of years. Some will flat-out gamble on not needing heavy-duty medical coverage for a year or two.

In 011 today, officers were informed that the 2nd watch would indeed be on the front lines. That did not go over well.
Not so !!!!!!! 3rd watch should cover the g-8 they have the most officers and should handed the g-8 and they should also have school units and all community policing and commanders staff added to them have all officers with 10yrs and less handed that period.

I agree with poster 1. To number 2 have you been to this so called "training"? I was and I would not call what they did training. First of all approx 6 twenty minute smoke breaks, hour and a half lunch and some goof who pushes a play button on a computer to show me a video of cops across the nation getting their ass kicked, and telling me how to step forward and yell"back""back". this is not training nor a trainer. Any mush young or old can do this. And before you say that I'm complaining about the breaks and long ass lunch, I'm just saying nothing that day was considered beneficial or "training" to prepare anyone for the battle that's coming in May.
People had better make arrangements now for May. This mayhem may start on the 1st and continue the whole month, if not longer. To further complicate things, Israel is poised to strike around that time at the Iranian Nuke Facilities. Guys, this isn't going to be 3 days of standing around. For the bulk of the Department this is going to be the defining moment of their career. Plan now!

Little Mikey got rid of Pleines, probably the one guy who knew the most about your contract. But hey you guys get Geiger and McCarthy, at least they can tell you where the good placers to eat are, but not so good with all that fancy "labor stuff". And they, like Herbert, laugh all the way to the bank on the backs for the stupid PO's.
The light-duty officers are going to be assigned to one building, not yet disclosed. The city will use them for processing mass arrests related to the G-8.

1st watch, 2nd watch, or 3rd watch, does it really matter? Whoever goes out there will be improperly trained and under equipped. I can't believe how many people on this job actually get a good laugh at fellow officers being under trained, the dept not having a secure plan for this protest, and the fact that we have shit equipment. WE are all going to sacrifice something in some way for this G8 bullshit. I could see ridiculing people if the dept gave us everything we needed including an actual plan. But this is nothing to smile about, officers have the potential of being seriously injured if shit hits the fan. Really? Officers will be sleeping at the academy or UIC, what about relief during the day? Nothing to laugh at, we are all being pushed out there with nothing.

I agree with this poster....who really cares who goes first. We have no real plan no leadership and we all are going to give our time to cover this train wreck. I hope we all come out of this with no injuries. But with no proper equipment and no real training somebody is going to get hurt. Please stay safe and remember its just us....

As a 2nd watch Sgt with 26 yrs on, I could care less if I have to go downtown. I'm by no means a "company man", but silly shit like this was part of the deal when we signed up. I think the city was delusional by politicking to host this event and keeping their fingers crossed nothing bad happens.
All I ask is PLEASE look out for each other and don't disregard your safety for anything, other than helping out a fellow officer in need.

I went though the bulls riots in07 (all of them) and was trained by the" days of rage "cops. Learned a lot those days . We are on days because we did are time, not because we are cowards like you believe. I don't worry about my fellow officers with time because I know they have my back. You younger officers tend to be all about yourself and don't care about one another.
I fell sorry for you. You will be in the districts that will explode with gang violence. You wil get first hand knowledge of what it feels like to be in a riot situation with no experience officers to help you. Your supervisors ,for the most part ,are useless. Working the G-8 will be far easier than working in a district where no help is coming.

Someone oughta look into how the "trainers" consist of people with an average of 7-9 yoj and have never been in situation like what's coming in May. These instructors as well as the ones that did TARA training dont know shit in the real world of policing. The only ones I say might have an inkling of an idea are those with military experience. I went through all the riots of the 60s including 68. A lot of guys did. We had very little or no training at all. You will find that somehow you will prevail, someone in your squad, unit will step up take some kind of control it's in your blood, and you wll prevail. Protect each other anyway you have to. Once the protesters become afraid of you things get easier. The trick is to get them terrified of you. I know there are more cameras and cell phones etc, but you will prevaile. I hope that maybe they will start to remember 68, I hope and pray that will help you. I really wish I could be with you guys physically. I will certainly be with you in thought. They work a desk, or in the academy, or in the front office, or with computers, or in personnel. They shuffle papers. Post blogs. And tell people that they're a cop. But, they have no interest in being a cop.

If this department Nader me work an inside "job", I'd quit and go to another police department.

On a serious note, I'm no spring chicken, but with 20 years of dedicated service I will continue to serve the city again and again even if the Mayor is a moron and using this as a stepping stone for his future endeavors.
I'm gonna fight G8 protestors if called to do so because I have pride in my Profession and my city.

Then quit. Go do something else. You act like you are owed so much. Why? You picked this job, you did not get drafted. I don't like it either sometimes but just like you I picked this job. I always loved it, maybe not as much anymore but when you put on that star you take the good with the bad. If you did not know that when you joined then you made a horrible mistake. What did you think being a policeman entailed? You picked a thankless job that has to be done regardless, plan ahead. I empathize with your predicament regarding how this will disrupt your family life. It is going to disrupt my family's life also. That is one of the reasons policemen form bonds that civilians don't always understand, we are in this together. If you and I are stuck somewhere while this shit storm is happening and you want blow off some steam I'll listen brother. This thing is going to be a pain in the ass but we will get through it.
