Protestors gathered outside the Englewood District police station Saturday angry over the appointment of a new police commander.
The group was upset with Mayor Emanuel and Superintendent Garry McCarthy because the new commander, Leo Schmitz, is white.
Schmitz has been a police officer for 26 years and served as the commander of the 8th district and the gang enforcement division.
The group says an African American commander would better serve their district, which covers one of the most crime-ridden areas of the city.
Chicago police released a statement reading in part: “Schmitz is the best person to lead the 7th District, and we have the utmost confidence in his leadership and ability to make the Englewood community safer for residents."
Is anyone going to call the reverends on their bullshit?

It's a power thang. Not who the Commander is. The community wants to dictate public policy like they were used to under Daley's administration in exchange for votes. They don't like being told what to do even though the only thing that part of the city contributes to Chicago is the biggest murder rate in the country. And the reverends can't get paid off by would be Commanders if Rahm is putting his own picks into spots.

This is racism and no matter who is involved it should be confronted and condemned. If it where an all white neighborhood and they said they wanted a white Commander then that would be racist. Just because the rolls are reversed doesn't permit this behavior. Doctor King said his dream was for a man not to be judged by the color of his skin but by his character.
The Mayor needs to send a message to all involved that this is wrong. The schools in the area should address the issue in class and have a one day of racial sensitivity training.

Per Jody Wise and the Chicago Crime Commission's 2012 Gang Book, the page with the 007 District shows the whole district is gang riden. Who better to stop the gangs but, the commander of gang enforcement. Which should lower all areas of crime. The people protesting must be gang members in fear that things will not be they way they always are.

All I can say is GREAT; now what? This Commander has proven himself and has earned more department awards then any other person on the Chicago police department. I process any crime scene and let the evidence tell the story. The most micro speck of evidence can be the linchpin to solving the case. Race does not effect crime scene investigation or processing of a scene. A scientific approach and methods are used in the intest of accuracy. Using race would be worse than junk science.

I think that it is time to tax the churches like everyone else. They use alot of services commit many crimes, especially sex offenses, and want to be an active role in public administration, so let them be full partners and help with the bills and our pensions too

A police Commander is not there to "represent" the community. He or she is there to police it. This is the problem with people in your community. No respect for authority. No, a lotta you guys don't get why they're doing this. These same people would love guys like Pfleger or Bob Fioretti b/c they feel like they respect them and listen to them. If Leo gets in there and the people feels like he cares about them, they'll be largely quiet on this issues. Watch. It's not racism or hatred of whites, it's fear and distrust that he'll listen to 35th street and City Hall before them. If it's a black commander and they get that impression, they're going to railroad him out of there as best as possible. If it's a white commander, they don't believe they'll be able to remove him b/c it's status quo. They feel they can hold blacks more accountable because they can blacklist you from garnering support in the black community. Whites generally don't need that support unless you're an elected and have black constituents. You may not agree with the thinking but it behooves you to know why instead of just thinking it's racism. Notice...the outspoken "leaders of the black community" aren't talking about Al Wysinger not making supt anymore...b/c they like McCarthy. You are right that it's about a commander they can control. My question is this: isn't every district that way? I'm from Englewood and I don't care who the commander is as long as he /she takes care of the POs and looks out for the community. That's it...but we all know that it's regular for power brokers to say who they want in their station i.e. on here weeks ago everyone was talking about O'Shea saying who he wanted for commander and McCarthy ignoring him. You can say what you want about race or whatever but I guarantee you this much, it was still about control and influence. I've lived in 007 and 022...people want power and influence everywhere you go.

This goof actually used hairstyle as an excuse stating "some people wear dreadlocks, but that doesn't mean they are in a gang and need to be stopped by police". I have NEVER stopped anyone just because they had cornrows, dreadlocks, weave etc., nor have I worked with anyone that did. That was the most asinine statement ever broadcast on public radio. This clown related that only a black commander understands "cultural" differences like that. To that I say- We are not the FASHION police, we don't care if you walk around in pigtails and potato sacks. We DO care if you walk around representing gang affiliation and sell dope on the corner- maybe this is the "cultural" difference the rev was talking about? Here's a solution- let black coppers police the black community and white coppers police the white community- what a progressive idea! What year is this?

This is true -- there are some "arrangements" and "understandings" that are going to be upset.
This is probably a good thing for everybody but those who were "hooked up."
Some places insist on a little regular shakeup to maintain fairness, stop favoritism and bullying. Example -- IDOC I know will change C.O.s from one cell house to another every 90 days, say, for this reason.
There are no bad intentions here. Call it a "breath of new air," a fresh start, something that might help inspire improvements, and go from there.

The real question the revruns should be asking is if LEO is so good then why are they giving him 140 more officers than the previous commander had.

That is a good question, considering the immense political influence of an ever-growing number of revs. There was privately-run (not CHA) senior housing built in Auburn/Gresham at Pfleger's request -- guess whose friends got hired into all the positions. That said, I think McCarthy making Leo the Commander of the 007 District is inspired. He'll turn the entire District into a "Gang Crimes" division and will provide the P.O.'s with more Gang Intell that any other Commander could. My bet is that his detractors in the community are really more concerned about him invading their turf than they are concerned about his race. No, she made LT 6Nov98 and was made DC of 002 in March 99.
I was in Gang Crimes North during the summer of 1991. Englewood was so out of control, that all three gang crime areas were sent there. Many officers stayed for the majority of the summer. Then, a power outage and the ensuing looting in Austin necessitated our being moved there. In my opinion, districts 7, 11, and 15 have frequently received more attention than most other districts, and they continue to be three of the worst in the city. The color of the commander's skin will not make any difference. The parents of the gang bangers need to step and do their jobs, which, obviously, isn't going to happen, so the state needs to remove the bangers from society by any means possible. The good people in Englewood don't desreve to live in constant fear, and the reverends, whose 'efforts' have done damn little to alleviate the situation, should keep their mouths shut. As Bill Clinton said, "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem." We need Patrolman Joe McCarthy back to lock all the bangers' asses up! INSANE FISH FOREVER!!!
