Quinn to Cave to Rahm

  • It’s a go!

Sneed has learned Gov. Pat Quinn is giving a thumbs up to a controversial bill to protect children as well as fill the city’s empty coffers.

To wit: Quinn is giving Chicago the green light to install speed “safety” enforcement cameras around schools and parks, which could generate a fortune in city fines!

"...could generate." Key words there.

Drivers have changed their habits before. Drivers will change them again after an adjustment period.

In the meantime, if anyone hears of maps that show where the speed zones are (and aren't), forward them here so we can let everyone know about them.

How exactly does this work? When you blow a red light (or so I've been told) the camera flashes and you know you're getting a ticket in the mail. How does the speed trap-er, zone camera-let you know you're over the limit?

Democrats are destroying the once great state we call Illinois. Too bad these are the liberal shit Democrats and not the Regan Democrats of the 80's like my parents and grandparents. It's disgusting how these Irish potatoheads like Quinn, Madigan, Cullerton, Daley, O'Rahm, and McStrogers have turned this place into shit.

Hopefully, Illinois Gov. Pat 'Tax, Borrow, $pend, Repeat' Quinn and 9.5 haven't seen this article.

Anyone in California snapped violating a red light pays a fine of $480, and according to the traffic-watch site TheNewspaper.com, no other jurisdiction anywhere has a tab that high. The second-highest fine in the United States is $250, and it is usually more like $100.

Daley always had his little wet pinky in the air to see which way the wind was blowing. If voters started making noise about any proposed plan he would get rid of it pronto. The stuttering little prick never had the balls to stand up to us. Racoon Eyes on the other hand could fucking care less about what you think. The more fees, fines, and taxes the better. My GPS tells where red light and speed cameras are located...based on user input.

There's even a phone app or two out there that will do it.

Remember, these cameras run constantly, so if you're so inclined to throw eggs, mud or feces at the glass covering the camera (not CDTP according to CPD. It happens every Halloween), make sure you do it from out of camera view.

This city is going to burn in May. Only because of politicians like this with their arrogance to go against the people. It's going to be difficult to stand on the front line when I can sympathize with their anger.

It will be interesting to see where the put these cameras. Will they put put around ALL city schools (public and private)? Will they go around ALL parks?

Or, as this administration has shown in past efforts, will the cameras only go in the areas where there is a solid tax base? Where the majority of the people have a job and can afford to pay the ticket?

Rahm says this is a safety issue but where are the facts and more importantly, the figures to back him up?

When they installed the red light cameras, the city stated that they would be installed at the most accident prone intersections. As proof, they used the number of accident reports that were generated by the CPD as proof that these intersections were dangerous.

So what statistics can Rahm show us for the speeding cameras? Does the department keep stats on how many speeding tickets were written within a school zone or by a public park?

They'll likely pass RTC by the end of the spring session. If they don't there's going to be lot less southern Illinois Democrats in office come next spring.

Southern Democrats have already formed a caucus for the express purpose of denying Quinn/Chicago a budget and anything else they want unless RTC passes.

Were I a Democrat politician or media type I'd really start paying more attention to the words of Abraham Lincoln and the 1.5 million FOID holders in the state.

This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or exercise their revolutionary right to overthrow it.

The sad fact about these cameras is that they will impact on parents who are taking their kids to school. And usually those will be working parents who care about their children, who will now have the added burden of these tickets. If kids were really the issue, the cameras would only work during hours when school is in session. Getting nailed by one of these cameras at say 2:00 a.m. is clearly a money grabbing scheme.

So how many of you did? Or told friends or relatives to do the same? Get ready to open those wallets you naive chicagoans, oh psst. You suburbanites don't think your little town won't follow suit like they always do once they they all the $$$$$$$$ these cameras are bringing in. If safety around parks and schools is the real concern here, then install speed bumps on every street adjacent to parks and schools and post signs advising that speed bumps have been istalled on those streets. It's much cheaper and ot will definitely slow vehciles down and make it more safe for everyone. But we all know the true reason for installing cameras is to generate revenue for the city.

I've been in jurisdictions with speed cameras. Generally the first indication you get is when the summons shows up in the mail. In many states they're not enforceable without personal service. They're relying on the sheep that get them to panic and pay or appeal, which acknowledges service. Illinois may have closed this loophole, so be careful.

Generally there are sweet revenue splits with a private company that installs and services the cameras. Sure would like to know what kind of deal it is, and figure out the quid pro quo. . .

BIG BROTHER is the problem. Next, will be cameras required in restaurants, recording whether you eat trans fats, or not.
A citation will be sent in the mail if you eat food with more than 25% calories from fat.
A ticket will be issued if you walk against a red light, even if it's two in the morning and there isn't a vehicle anywhere in sight.
The police will pound on your door if you angrily declare, "I wish that guy was dead."
The thought police will apprehend you if you even THINK it.
In case you're that clueless, we don't have some epidemic of children getting slammed into by speeders on side streets. We don't have some huge problem with people blowing red lights 'near' schools. We have a huge budgetary deficit, due to the theft and mismanagement perpetrated by the politicians in this town and now they expect US to pay through the nose to bail it out.

Update

The bill that state lawmakers approved last fall would permit speed-enforcement cameras to be mounted within one-eighth of a mile of city parks and schools and authorize fines of between $50 and $100, depending on how fast the driver was going over the speed limit.

The hours of operation around schools would be on school days only and span from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, but hours would lengthen Friday, to 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Around parks, the cameras would function between one hour before the park opens to an hour after it closes.

Companion legislation that Quinn signed Monday also established that drivers caught speeding between six and 10 miles an hour in the camera-enforcement zones would face $50 fines and an additional $50, if late.

Fines of $100 would be allowed when drivers are caught going more than 10 miles an hour over the limit.

If this is a safety issue and not just another money generator, why then is this only for the city of Chicago? Shouldn't these speeding camera's be all over the state? I think it's because Quinn knows he's got the Chicago vote tied up no matter what he does, down state (anywhere outside Cook county) is a different story.

This is for the retards that talk about using a app on your phone to detect parks/schools/ red light cameras.

The school/park zones are 66% of the city. The red light cameras are probably 10%. The damn phone would be beeping all the time.

As for the "yes men" who say "Don't speed then." C'mon Joe, if a am blazing(26 MPH) down 103rd street at Western on the way to work at 6AM. Do i really deserve a ticket?

If I am driving down Western by Kennedy Park at 1145pm at 30MPH, do I deserve a $100 ticket for 10 over?

Rahms new curfew has kids home at what, 10:00 pm on weekdays? The park closes at 11. The new law still runs radar one hour after all parks close. What children is he protecting at that time?

What "kids" are walking to school at 6am? Home from grammar school at 9pm?

Nickel and dimming us to death.

-Income tax increase-check
-water bill increase-check
-city sticker increase
-Metro increase
-gas price increase
-Com Ed increase
-property tax increase
-salary increase-almost got ya!

Arizona had them on the expressways but took them out last year. They still have portable cameras in some of the cities surrounding Phoenix but they post it in the papers where they will be putting them. They are usually around a school but not around every school or playground. I'm sure glad I moved to Indiana when I pulled the pin.

How many more people will leave the city during this decade? I want to be one them. This is the next Detroit. Mark these words. There will never be a two party system because stupidity and ignorance prevail here.

2/06/2012 07:22:00 AM

And how slow will the snow plows have to go on main arteries in order to plow? There are 4 of those those useless black and yellow bumps in my alley, which is 8 houses long--yup, you can pick up a lot of speed there--someone plowed the alley after the last snow, and knocked one of those bumps up off the ground with a very large bolt sticking up that you couldn't see until you thumped it.

So after you knew it was there, you'd have to veer all the way over, nearly knocking your mirrors off. One day I got sick of thwacking my mirrors so I stopped, opened my door and tried to pull that puppy up. No way.

The next day, the bump was thrown to the side of the alley. The moral of the story?

'Where there's a will there's a way.'

And your neighbors might be watching--and they might be smarter--or stronger than you too!

How many kids have been killed by a speeding car in a school zone?

Most of us realize the camera are BS, just a money grab.

"Arizona had them on the expressways but took them out last year."

Yes, but Arizona is responsive to their voters.

All Illinois politicians are interested in is how to make more money for themselves and their cronies.

"Other than a money grab what is so terrible about cameras?"

You mean to say that "Other than a money grab" isn't bad enough?

Really?

It's just another tax. If you want to drive fast, you've got to pay.

The idiots that voted for gov. potatohead, and 9 1/2 are the ones who will not be paying the fines or taxes anyway. They go to the station, get an I bond, then never to be seen again, until a warrant is issued. Then Ibond and back in the circle. The people with jobs will be paying the fines or taxes for fear of loosing them. So the illegals with no license or expired plates and the coffers will just ignore and say to the judge that they can't afford the fines.
Most schools and parks in my neighborhood already have speed humps.

to ensure accuracy every radar unit is supposed to be calibrated with tuning forks before each and every working shift and also before and after being used to detect each speeding violation.

Just like the parking boxes. Take em out. The parking boxes are solar powered by expensive fragile panels on top of the unit. Small ball peen hammer. Just walk the neighborhood. Look and act normal, like you belong. No one will give a second look. Illegal deals and a system that REFUSES to deal with the corruption ='s lawful action by the citizens to protect their interests.

Everyone should fight the tickets and ask for a court date. That will really piss the judges off.

You don't get a judge. You get an administrative hearing officer! You lose!

Brah..ha.. ha...ha...everyone is assuming Quinn runs this state. Quinn has been, the irish illegitamate child of illinois politics for a very long time. His activism has usually been against the establishment. Now he is trying to be a big shot and the evil cabal of his irish big brothers wont let him play. This is all Madigan, Daley, and Cullerton, plain and simple. Quinn should have bypassed this legislation and played hardball (cameras vs casino)with these pricks, but he didnt. Quinn use to fight for the little guy, but it seems in his quest for political legitamacy, he lost all sense of what is to be part of the working middleclass. So he joined forces with what has been the equivalent of the hanson brothers, of the movie slapshot, in illinois politics, Madigan, daley and cullerton. This state is doomed.

But how many cameras will be in the ghetto? I'm sure only white kids will be a risk from speeders! Same as the red light cameras. Northwestern needs to do a study. Looks like racial profiling to me.

anyone else noticing that very little money is left in the bank at the end of the month---- property taxes up, water bills to double, fines for not shoveling the snow or licensing your dog, speed trap cameras coming soon--- I can't wait to get out of this crooked filthy city--- the little emperor promised transparency when he took office--- all he is doing is obliterating the middle class and making people run for the hills...

Well, well, if red light cameras are to be near schools and parks then the entire east side of Chicago at the lake front must grind to a screeching halt;-)))). Lake Shore Drive is in the park, as well as Columbus and just about any major thoroughfare. why not have 24/7 cameras if it's all about the children, have you seen how many lil ones are out in tow in the wee hours in da hood. ? I feel this law is discriminating against all the other parts of the state, I mean what about the childrens in the entire state, should they not be protected???? For shame quinin, for shame rahm, for double shame madigan....

Really? Ogden, Kedzie, Cicero, Diversey, Archer, Roosevelt, 95th, Halsted, 31st, Harlem... all are throughfares where people travel at a decent speed. No speedbumps on any of 'em.
Rethink your comments, because there are schools and parks on each of those streets. We are totally screwed.

"to ensure accuracy every radar unit is supposed to be calibrated with tuning forks before each and every working shift and also before and after being used to detect each speeding violation."

Yes, that's the case with REAL traffic RADAR, but since these tickets are "administrative" and are issued to the vehicle OWNER and not the driver, that doesn't apply.

Add the fact that if you contest this ticket you appear before a hearing officer (a city employee whose job it is to keep his job-by finding you liable in almost all cases) and not a real judge and what do you get?

A new driving tax.
