New Stars

The BOP directive is out, dated 03 February 2012:
  • Each week the Human Resources Division will send out an AMFN fax message that identifies the distribution point and which units are scheduled to participate in the exchange process.
Supposedly, these are the stars with the RFID chip embedded in them (if rumors are to be believed.) Ten seconds in the microwave ought to take care of that.

Won't matter if they put the chip in the stars because they will break and not function shortly after. Everything the CPD buys breaks or fails shortly after. PDT's work 50% of the time, CLEAR down 70% of the time, cameras don't function often, GPS fails, doors to lock-up broken for months, copiers and printers broken constantly, alarms going off in the station for hours on end, etc. etc. Hell, just look at the junk "news" stars we got a few years back. They are embarrassing with the letters and numbers missing on nearly everyones. I have been coloring mine with a black marker just to make it look respectable. This department is one big comedy.

I've had mine since last fall. The middle sticks out further (rfid chip?) and the star is slightly thicker that the old ones. The company that makes them is normally pretty expensive and I'm sure City said give us the cheapest piece of crap you have...and they did. Star still says Police Officer, Sergeant, ...etc.

I have my doubts that the dept. can effectively track us using RFID. The maximum distance an RFID chip can be scanned is 300 ft.

The chip is true. It will work on the same premise as a Garvin. On the back of each star will be a code index. This number if accessed by the Dept. in the event of a lost or stolen star will give a location of the star.

rfid to track is a bust. You would need readers all over the city to pick up the signal. Maybe for inventory purposes in manufacturing/shipping, or for scanning stars for authenticity, but nothing more. Think about dogs that have a chip, you must bring the dog to the scanner to read the contents. No different here, unless you see our stars now sporting a battery pack on the back. At that rate, GPS is more believable; however, you would need a constant power source to feed the transmitter, batteries will only last for so long. So unless these things come out looking like an arc reactor like in the movie Iron Man, no one should be concerned.

It is a paranoid delusion made up by people who think IAD give a rat's ass ( pun intended ) what they are doing or where they are going. I remember working with an old timer 10-12 years ago who refused to allow a pdt in the car because "they" can track you. Mind you, we never did anything other than our job, but the paranoia runs so deep in this City!

RFID's have been in your ID's for years now...did you guys microwave those too?

These new stars have been at 35th street for over a year now. I took my star to be repaired and they said I could just wait for the new one. There IS a chip in the back of the new star. It is not a tracking device. The star will be "activated" when you pick it up and "deactivated" should it be lost or stolen. It will be used for timekeeping. You will wave your star over a pad and it will record your time in and time out.
You can learn all about them by going to the Blackington star website. They are called "smart badges".

RFID chips are very similar to barcodes in the sense that a certain amount of data is contained within them, and then transmitted to a reading device which then processes and utilizes the information. The major difference is that barcodes have to be physically visible to the reading device, which is usually only able to scan them at a distance of a 12 inches or less. RFID tags, on the other hand, do not have to be visible to the reading device. They can be scanned through clothes, wallets, and even cars. The distance from which they can be read is also much greater than that of a barcode. At DEFCON an RFID tag was scanned at a distance of 69 feet, and that was back in 2005, the possible reading distance now is probably much greater than that.

There are a few different categories of RFID tags, but the most common ones, and the ones we will be dealing with in this instructable, are the "passive" type. Passive RFID chips contain no internal power supply. They contain an antenna which is able to have a current induced in it when within range of the RFID reader. The tag then uses that electricity to power the internal chip, which bounces its data back out through the antenna, where it will be picked up by the reader.
The main reason someone would want to block or destroy RFID chips would be to maintain privacy. In the last step I explained that RFID tags can be read from very long distances. The potential for abuse of this technology grows as more and more products and devices are being created with these tags built in.

Companies are getting consumers to blindly accept many RFID tagged products with the promise of convenience; however, most of the devices that contain RFID tags don't really need them. The tags may save a few seconds, but sacrifice an enormous amount of privacy and security. It is now possible for someone, with relatively simple equipment, to walk down a busy sidewalk and pickup the personal information of people carrying RFID tagged devices, without them even knowing.

Being able to block or destroy these chips allows people to decide what type of information they are willing to sacrifice for convenience.

2/04/2012 01:12:00 AM

a single layer of foil works just as well, as those wallets are just aluminum. in fact, the inserts are basically just foil anyway. people seem to confuse passive RFID with GPS, which (for the most part) requires a power source. as RFID would be use to log in/out etc., it wouldn't need to be 'disabled' off duty unless you spend your free time at work. being tracked outside of work isn't an issue, but protecting whatever identifying info that is encoded on the chip from proximity sniffing could be... its not difficult to build a cheap device that can read an RFID chip on a person without physically touching them, although you have to come pretty close. if one were to then theoretically reencode that info onto a blank chip, one would not only have the original owner's clearance but could also create a false trail... the proxim sniffing has been demonstrated ages ago, using the RFID in most newer credit cards. like the CC companies, i guess some agencies find that saving four seconds is worth a gaping security hole. here is an old article from some silly cop blog...

Vermont Inmates Slip Pig Image Into Police Decal

The prank has meant that Vermont police have driven squad cars for a year with the hidden pig image.

MONTPELIER, VT - Inmates working at a Vermont correctional unit's print shop managed to sneak a prank image of a pig into a state police crest.

The image is emblazoned on police cars, and 30 cruisers sported the design for the last year.

The official crest depicts a spotted cow against a background of snowy mountains. But the inmates' version featured one of the cow's spots shaped like a pig in an apparent reference to the pejorative word for police.

Perspective: RFID tags: Big Brother in small packages
Could we be constantly tracked through our clothes, shoes or even our cash in the future?
I'm not talking about having a microchip surgically implanted beneath your skin, which is what Applied Digital Systems of Palm Beach, Fla., would like to do. Nor am I talking about John Poindexter's creepy Total Information Awareness spy-veillance system, which I wrote about last week.
Instead, in the future, we could be tracked because we'll be wearing, eating and carrying objects that are carefully designed to do so.
The generic name for this technology is RFID, which stands for radio frequency identification. RFID tags are miniscule microchips, which already have shrunk to half the size of a grain of sand. They listen for a radio query and respond by transmitting their unique ID code. Most RFID tags have no batteries: They use the power from the initial radio signal to transmit their response.
You should become familiar with RFID technology because you'll be hearing much more about it soon. Retailers adore the concept, and CNET News.com's own Alorie Gilbert wrote last week about how Wal-Mart and the U.K.-based grocery chain Tesco are starting to install "smart shelves" with networked RFID readers. In what will become the largest test of the technology, consumer goods giant Gillette recently said it would purchase 500 million RFID tags from Alien Technology of Morgan Hill, Calif.

Wow... RFID chips are not GPS! RFID are like barcodes that are read by a recorder of some sort.. IE opening doors or like swiping in at work.. Its like in the new stations the electronic key cards. You swipe them on the pad and they activate doors etc.. That is a RFID chip. Its not gpd. If it was GPS it would have to be powered by something. Unless they have you somehow charge up your stars or put batteries in them they are not gps. but it doesnt matter because they dont have RFID chips in them. Ive already seen the new star, no RFID, they would be put on the back of the star and there would be a plastic white bump on the back of the star. You cant put a rfid chip inside of the star. They pour our stars out of hot liquid metal when they are made.. If any hot liquid anything were to touch that chip it would melt instantly... dont believe the hype and paranoia.

There are no chips in the stars we ordered then from blackinton the same crappy company our last stars were ordered from the only difference is the city seal is baked in instead if painted on the star and the metal quality of the star is heavier. Instead of losing a random painted letter the entire center seal is likely to fall off because it is only glued onto the star. We did not pay that much more for these stars and in my opinion they are a complete waste of money. So for those of you spreading rumors about chips in the stars --shut the f-up because you don't know what the hell you are talking about. Make up rumors about something thy matters like hiring more officers.

2/4/2012 6:30am if your wife works in personnel and she told you that the stars have a chip she is an FN liar. The stars do not have chips they are from blackinton and they were only a step up in quality from the other crappy stars we have. The chips were not even a thought when we ordered them because they would go over our budget. Ladner made the final decision on this order. So do your self a favor unless you know what you are talking about zip it. Tell you wife she also needs to stop spreading rumors because she doesn't know what the hell she Is talking about.

There are a ton of sworn exempts in the HQ Building. Why couldn't they have assigned one of them to the new star purchase instead of the goof Ladner? Yes, she is the head of HR, but she is a civilian that has outright contempt and no respect for the sworn culture and the new stars impact every, single sworn member on our department. Play-police sworn member Brian Murphy could have assigned someone else because he is Ladner's boss, but he is nothing more than a clout-heavy, political-climber without any balls. Thanks Brian.
